OPN - Disco Inferno 1 - "Brother"

It's time to jump all the way back in time to 2018 and join John, Jesse, and Cam as they discuss Season 2 of Star Trek Discovery as we pass the time (crystal) waiting for more Star Trek Strange New Worlds!

We get to meet Pike! and Pike's old hair!

[00:00:02] OPN kicking it man. Is this thing on? Hello? Hello? Welcome to Open Pike Night, and our special

[00:00:28] mid-season coverage of Discovery Season 2 Disco Inferno. This is our first episode looking

[00:00:36] at where Pike, Una and all the rest of our good old crew came from even starting with

[00:00:41] Ethan Peck's voice but tonight I'm joined, of course, by my co-host, the man whose uniform

[00:00:48] isn't just, it's just not quite right yet, Jesse Bailey.

[00:00:53] I know what it is, John, and I welcome dissenting opinions.

[00:00:58] I really do, but it has to come with a solution.

[00:01:01] Well, and that solution comes in the form of the man

[00:01:03] whose hair just isn't quite there yet, Cameron Harrison.

[00:01:08] Yeah, I just need two or three more bottles of pomade

[00:01:10] and it'll be just right.

[00:01:12] Yep, yep.

[00:01:12] Like, clean up the size a little bit.

[00:01:14] It definitely helped.

[00:01:16] And tonight we are here to discuss the first appearance

[00:01:20] of Captain Christopher Pike,

[00:01:22] of our modern Captain Christopher Pike, Anson Mount,

[00:01:25] in Discovery Season 2 all the way back in 2018, I believe.

[00:01:31] Wow.

[00:01:32] They do look like babies.

[00:01:34] Yeah.

[00:01:34] I don't even remember 2018.

[00:01:36] I don't know about you guys.

[00:01:38] Yeah.

[00:01:38] There are lots of things that happened in this episode

[00:01:40] that I'm like, wow, I didn't realize that was Season 2 of Discovery.

[00:01:44] It's been a long couple of years.

[00:01:46] I totally forgot that Nan, that's her name, right?

[00:01:50] Came from the Enterprise.

[00:01:51] I did too.

[00:01:52] I absolutely did too.

[00:01:53] I was like, oh.

[00:01:54] I thought she was a disco OG.

[00:01:56] Disco crew?

[00:01:56] Yeah.

[00:01:56] Yeah.

[00:01:57] And in this way too, when they said, oh, we're beaming on with a,

[00:02:02] you know, officer and a science officer, I was like, okay, no, it's not Spock,

[00:02:05] but I'm pretty sure it's Pike and Una, right?

[00:02:07] Me too.

[00:02:09] It's Pike and Nan.

[00:02:11] And Connelly, who we'll get to, but I really love that moment

[00:02:16] because they're so subtle with it, right?

[00:02:18] The way they tell you it's not Spock is they shoot from right behind his

[00:02:21] totally human ear onto Burnham's face, and it's like, that's subtle and well done,

[00:02:28] which is a note you're going to hear from me pretty often in this episode, I think.

[00:02:31] Yeah.

[00:02:32] But first off, we start with a very Burnham intro.

[00:02:38] I forgot also how much we get Burnham voiceovers in Discovery,

[00:02:42] because that seems to taper, that tapered off in the last season.

[00:02:45] Her personal logs must take up like half of the ship's storage.

[00:02:49] They must be like, Burnham, can you please, we need some space, okay?

[00:02:53] We're offloading the sphere data.

[00:02:55] We need you to delete some personal logs.

[00:02:57] No.

[00:02:58] No, she stores her personal logs in the turbo shaft.

[00:03:02] It's a infinite area.

[00:03:02] Oh, no, yeah.

[00:03:03] It's the infinite area of turbo shaft.

[00:03:05] There's a lot of infinite area there, yeah.

[00:03:07] Yeah.

[00:03:08] I did like remembering and getting to see again, like, oh, Spock is one of those kids

[00:03:13] who drew dragons on stuff on everything with like eight packs, 12 packs probably.

[00:03:19] He's one of those kids.

[00:03:20] And you know his binder said Spock, but with a cool S, right?

[00:03:23] Yeah.

[00:03:24] He absolutely had the cool S, Spock, yeah.

[00:03:27] But there's a lot of stuff I do really like in this episode and this season as a whole,

[00:03:31] but like right away you get this nod to the short trek, the girl who made the stars, which

[00:03:36] I think is interestingly consistent, right?

[00:03:40] Because Discovery, as we know, ended on a nod to another short trek, which I'm, again, not

[00:03:46] super sure about that choice, but like it's something they had done before.

[00:03:50] So it's not that weird considering, and it's going to come up again later in this season.

[00:03:56] Yeah.

[00:03:57] I mean, I was going to say like, so first, my first instincts, my first instincts, my

[00:04:02] first reactions, I did really like the Cassini footage.

[00:04:05] I love when Star Trek does that sort of stuff.

[00:04:07] I was wondering like why so much, because why, why so much Saturn?

[00:04:11] Does Saturn come into play this season?

[00:04:14] Is there something that happens with Saturn?

[00:04:15] I don't think so.

[00:04:16] So, but again, it's been a long time since I've seen the whole season.

[00:04:20] Yeah.

[00:04:20] It's going to be interesting for sure.

[00:04:22] But so I like that.

[00:04:23] But then as it went on, I was like, whew, this, this intro is Discovery in a nutshell.

[00:04:28] It's just a lot.

[00:04:29] We go from like the history of space exploration to like red signal foreshadowing that you don't

[00:04:34] know what's going on at first to African folklore to orphan children, sibling rivalries.

[00:04:39] Just by the end of the intro, I was like, whew, I am exhausted.

[00:04:42] I am ready for like a Snickers break.

[00:04:44] And, uh, but I'm watching on streaming, so no commercial breaks.

[00:04:47] Yep.

[00:04:47] Yep.

[00:04:48] But I mean, Syrix and Amanda's house has got to be the nicest that Vulcan has ever looked

[00:04:53] right.

[00:04:54] Like usually it's just this big desert with like lots of fire and giant statues.

[00:04:59] Their house is like, oh, this is nice.

[00:05:01] I would live there.

[00:05:03] I would hate that staircase though, with those blue glass walls of what a claustrophobic staircase.

[00:05:09] And also it's like, come on, Spock is drawing dragons and coalesces all over that thing.

[00:05:14] It was space Sharpies.

[00:05:15] I don't know.

[00:05:16] Yeah.

[00:05:16] You got to use that magic eraser.

[00:05:18] Exactly.

[00:05:19] Exactly.

[00:05:19] But Cameron, you're right.

[00:05:21] There is like, I don't know, 18 instances of the color red in this episode before we

[00:05:26] get to the actual bridge of discovery.

[00:05:28] Like it is heavy.

[00:05:31] And, and man, like once we do get to the bridge, it was like, oh wow, we're just dropped.

[00:05:36] You better have watched the episode before this, just before this season started streaming

[00:05:41] because damn, they drop you right back into it.

[00:05:44] Like, that's right.

[00:05:45] Disco is all serialized.

[00:05:47] It's like, you get no, no buffer zone, no rep, no, no, you know, exposition dump to get you

[00:05:54] back to where we are.

[00:05:55] No previously on at least.

[00:05:56] Yeah.

[00:05:57] That was strange.

[00:05:58] Yeah.

[00:05:58] I think every season after this has a previously on that covers the entire season prior.

[00:06:04] Yeah.

[00:06:04] And this one just didn't, this one just has Detmer ogling this constitution ship, which

[00:06:09] I really appreciate.

[00:06:11] She knows her ships and I'm glad to know that she got to fly a Connie, even if we never saw

[00:06:16] it happen on the screen.

[00:06:19] It's a good intro.

[00:06:20] It's fun.

[00:06:20] Like, okay.

[00:06:21] Yeah.

[00:06:21] The, this is, this is when these characters were like this, like Tilly was very, very young

[00:06:27] Tilly and kind of divorce code.

[00:06:29] And yeah.

[00:06:30] Coming from season five, like there, there was definitely a little bit of whiplash coming

[00:06:33] back to season two and just like, oh yeah, this is the Tilly of three seasons ago.

[00:06:38] Okay.

[00:06:38] Hey, these characters have been through some stuff and have changed.

[00:06:43] Yeah.

[00:06:43] You know what I love though, you guys about what we do is watching the introductory credits

[00:06:49] for a star Trek show and seeing names of people we have met and talked to.

[00:06:53] Oh yeah.

[00:06:54] Oh look, there's Orly and Sidowitz.

[00:06:56] Oh look, there's a Glenn Keenan, the director of photography.

[00:07:01] Like go back and listen to our interviews with all these people because they really know

[00:07:06] their stuff.

[00:07:06] And this is where they cut their teeth for strange new worlds.

[00:07:09] Yeah.

[00:07:10] So, uh, so Michael and Sarek are talking and they say, oh, I did not expect to see Spock

[00:07:15] again.

[00:07:15] Me neither.

[00:07:16] And this is a small thing, but I'm like, really?

[00:07:19] Cause you're in Starfleet and you're an ambassador for the Federation or something.

[00:07:23] Sarek.

[00:07:23] Like, yeah, your paths are likely to cross at some point.

[00:07:27] What do you mean?

[00:07:27] You never expected to see each other again.

[00:07:29] Yeah.

[00:07:29] But we know from the original series, or at least some of us do, that even by that time,

[00:07:37] Spock still has not seen his father in a long time.

[00:07:40] So it fits with the established canon.

[00:07:43] And obviously you're right about Michael, but we do come to realize later, she's talking

[00:07:48] about how she left things with him and not necessarily that it's like an impossible thing.

[00:07:53] But yeah, but I totally feel where you're coming from.

[00:07:56] Um, what did you guys think about pre-Geordie Visor Guy?

[00:08:00] It felt a little forced.

[00:08:02] A little forced.

[00:08:04] Yeah.

[00:08:04] There are a few things that felt a little forced in this episode.

[00:08:06] I'm like, yep, this is Star Trek Discovery.

[00:08:08] All right.

[00:08:09] Well, this is like, yeah, premiere television in 1918.

[00:08:13] 1918?

[00:08:14] Jesus.

[00:08:15] Red Angel came to tap me on the shoulder.

[00:08:17] I mean, it does feel like it's been that long, to be fair.

[00:08:20] Yeah.

[00:08:21] But yeah, there's, there's a lot that I'll probably mention where it's just like, oh yeah,

[00:08:24] okay.

[00:08:25] We, we are not happy unless stakes are like jammed up to 110%.

[00:08:30] Got it.

[00:08:31] Yeah.

[00:08:31] Seriously.

[00:08:32] Yeah.

[00:08:32] And let's, let's just get this out of the way.

[00:08:35] Okay.

[00:08:36] This Pike is so different, but only.

[00:08:42] I'm so glad you said that.

[00:08:43] I thought I was going to have to argue with you about this, Jesse.

[00:08:45] No, no.

[00:08:46] He's so different, but most of the differences are physical.

[00:08:51] Sure.

[00:08:51] Yeah.

[00:08:51] He's not in Marvel shape because he hasn't been in Doctor Strange 2 yet.

[00:08:57] And the hair, you guys, come on.

[00:08:59] The hair is like.

[00:09:00] The hair, there's too much hair on the side.

[00:09:01] His head is like twice as big compared to his body as it is once we get to Strange 2

[00:09:06] worlds.

[00:09:06] Because like you said, he hasn't gotten jacked yet.

[00:09:08] And that uniform is way too tight.

[00:09:12] Way.

[00:09:13] Both that, both his normal uniform and his EVA uniform.

[00:09:17] Like.

[00:09:17] Yeah.

[00:09:18] Little bagginess is okay.

[00:09:20] The hair is like, honestly hurt me a little bit to see it.

[00:09:24] Because I was like, come on.

[00:09:26] Like this.

[00:09:27] Ah, it's just not the same.

[00:09:29] For me.

[00:09:29] Yes.

[00:09:30] I was like, oh, the Strange New World uniforms are so good.

[00:09:33] So good.

[00:09:35] Yeah.

[00:09:35] They really are.

[00:09:35] I know that they just apparently introduced these ones, but I'm glad that for whatever

[00:09:39] reason, Starfleet was like, you know what?

[00:09:40] Let's update them again already.

[00:09:42] Well, you know.

[00:09:43] Within a year.

[00:09:44] Those like choke you to death collars are a little fascist looking.

[00:09:50] Like I could see why they got rid of them.

[00:09:53] But there are also some character differences.

[00:09:56] But I will argue that what we love about Anson Mount's performance as Pike is here from

[00:10:02] day one.

[00:10:03] Well, it's fascinating.

[00:10:04] We'll get to the specifics.

[00:10:05] Well, it's fascinating and it's not a criticism.

[00:10:07] But yeah, I mean, I was watching it and I think like writing wise, the foundations are

[00:10:11] still there.

[00:10:12] He's still like just a good dude with like old fashioned sayings and and yeah, just like

[00:10:19] a good Starfleet captain, which is kind of what all the captains are.

[00:10:22] And then, of course, it's Anson Mount channeling it.

[00:10:24] So there's a lot of similarities there.

[00:10:26] But you can tell that there's a little bit, you know, they're still fighting their way

[00:10:30] with him.

[00:10:30] His introduction is just a lot of archaic sayings in a row.

[00:10:35] And you're like, OK, this this guy has a thing.

[00:10:38] And by the end of the episode, he comes a little bit closer to the Pike.

[00:10:41] We know it.

[00:10:41] So it's not huge changes, but it is just it's fun and amusing to watch and see where they

[00:10:47] where they kind of tweak things.

[00:10:48] And I'm glad they gave us a reason why, like they gave us the line, you know, we didn't

[00:10:53] sit out the Klingon war just to leave somebody like, OK, he has issues with what he had to

[00:10:59] do during the Klingon war.

[00:11:00] He like it's good to be like, OK, this is him unloading some of his baggage.

[00:11:04] Got it.

[00:11:04] And I'm glad they didn't carry it over into Strange New Worlds.

[00:11:07] It's like now, OK, well, you know, we have to tie it in with that first episode.

[00:11:11] And like, this is why there's a warp bomb on this planet is this thing we are about to

[00:11:16] be involved in now that we're watching this season.

[00:11:18] But we'll give him a whole new reason to be haunted for a couple of exactly.

[00:11:22] Exactly.

[00:11:23] Yeah.

[00:11:23] Yeah.

[00:11:24] Definite shades of like McCoy and a little bit of Trip Tucker in there with right away.

[00:11:30] Like, here's the very Southern sounding stuff.

[00:11:34] Dude, you're from like California or Montana.

[00:11:37] Like, yeah, what is going on?

[00:11:39] But speaking of archaic languages, why would would would would not know what a penny is?

[00:11:47] She says, so this is where Starfleet spins all their pennies.

[00:11:50] Pennies.

[00:11:50] Yeah.

[00:11:51] It's a universal translator, Cameron.

[00:11:53] Clearly it's being translated from Barzan.

[00:11:56] I don't I don't know.

[00:11:59] But Linus doesn't have a translator later on.

[00:12:02] I don't know.

[00:12:02] Yeah.

[00:12:03] I've always wondered about that.

[00:12:04] He's just untranslatable.

[00:12:05] But Burnham gets it.

[00:12:07] Yeah.

[00:12:09] But yeah, no, it's it's definitely I took it as, you know, the oh, I'd love to be a spider

[00:12:15] under the table for that conversation.

[00:12:17] Like TNG.

[00:12:19] But I think it was because like pennies, like why wouldn't you just say money?

[00:12:24] Yeah.

[00:12:25] So this is where Starfleet spends their credits.

[00:12:27] Right.

[00:12:28] Which to me kind of implies that it's like her sort of botching that.

[00:12:33] That's something she's heard Pike say.

[00:12:35] Yeah, it could be.

[00:12:38] Also, like you work on the Enterprise.

[00:12:40] Like, are you are you jealous?

[00:12:42] I mean, yeah, Disco is a cool, unique, one of a kind ship, but you work on the Enterprise.

[00:12:48] Like, do we come on?

[00:12:49] Do we think it's maybe a nod to how giant the budget clearly was for Discovery?

[00:12:55] Like, oh, my God, this episode.

[00:12:57] There are some shots.

[00:12:58] Yes.

[00:12:59] That's what I use this episode.

[00:13:00] It is.

[00:13:01] Yeah.

[00:13:02] Yeah.

[00:13:03] The color of this episode is green.

[00:13:04] We see a lot of red, but it's green.

[00:13:06] Yeah.

[00:13:07] Green everywhere.

[00:13:09] And it's like, if you really think about it, it was kind of the only show on Paramount Plus

[00:13:14] that was an original at the time.

[00:13:17] So it's like it was the show they were pinning Paramount Plus on.

[00:13:21] Right.

[00:13:21] Yeah.

[00:13:21] This was the show that launched Paramount Plus as a major contender or so they hoped.

[00:13:27] Yeah.

[00:13:28] I do love like, wow, this show, this episode is already dated even as close as 2018 because

[00:13:35] we get a ha ha sneezing on somebody's face in a closed space is a funny joke.

[00:13:40] I was like, ooh, ooh, they would not have made that three years later.

[00:13:45] Like, you don't think that's funny, John?

[00:13:47] I thought it was funny.

[00:13:48] I think they would just, they'd lean into it three years later.

[00:13:51] Yeah.

[00:13:51] Right.

[00:13:52] Yeah.

[00:13:53] Yeah.

[00:13:54] It's like, wow, wow.

[00:13:54] That's right.

[00:13:55] I didn't have time to get you this.

[00:13:57] I do want to find a turbo lift stinger sound because you guys don't need to hear me bitch

[00:14:02] every time we see the inside of the turbo shaft.

[00:14:04] Okay.

[00:14:05] So if I, and I don't remember how often we see it this season, but I'm going to get

[00:14:08] you a stinger when we hear it, I'll just play the stinger and that will be my piece.

[00:14:12] Inconceivable.

[00:14:13] I like my very cloudy memory makes me think we don't see it super frequently in season

[00:14:20] two, but we see it like at least once per season until season five.

[00:14:24] And it's like, what?

[00:14:25] Cause I know book has a big fight in there in season three.

[00:14:29] Are you talking the actual turbo lift itself or the interstitial space where the turbo lift

[00:14:33] is moving through the, yes, the, the giant open space in the spaceship is unused.

[00:14:39] Yeah.

[00:14:39] Yeah.

[00:14:40] And that, I mean, that goes back to what?

[00:14:42] 2009 trick that goes back to the, the, the Kelvin verse movie.

[00:14:46] Right.

[00:14:46] That was the first time we got to really see that part of the ship.

[00:14:49] I believe.

[00:14:50] I don't know.

[00:14:51] I think it was, I think the first time we saw it here was the short track, right?

[00:14:54] With, with, uh, or no, it would have been after this.

[00:14:57] Cause it had Una with Una and Spock and the turbo.

[00:15:01] I don't know.

[00:15:01] I said at one point, I just said, discovery, what the hell are you doing?

[00:15:04] Wait, I wasn't going to bitch about it.

[00:15:06] Just play the inconceivable clip from princess pride.

[00:15:08] And that'll, that'll be enough.

[00:15:09] I remember in star Trek 2009 thinking, why is the engineering and warp core area based

[00:15:18] around water?

[00:15:19] Yeah.

[00:15:20] There's a lot of water in that ship.

[00:15:21] Plumbing.

[00:15:22] Yeah.

[00:15:24] Everything is pipes.

[00:15:25] Everything is tubes.

[00:15:27] Everything.

[00:15:27] Since, since we're talking about Pike.

[00:15:31] Like ostensibly.

[00:15:32] Did anybody else still get goosebumps from the first hit it?

[00:15:36] Cause it totally worked on me.

[00:15:38] Like he sits down, he says, hit it.

[00:15:41] And I'm like, yes.

[00:15:43] Yeah.

[00:15:44] Yeah.

[00:15:44] It was the first hit it.

[00:15:46] It was, it was the first hit it.

[00:15:47] And it, it worked.

[00:15:50] It worked.

[00:15:51] Like they gave him his hero zoom in shot to say it.

[00:15:53] And they're like, they knew like they had to know that this was kind of a test bed to

[00:15:58] see if people would watch a series for him from this episode.

[00:16:01] Right.

[00:16:02] You think they were?

[00:16:03] I don't know.

[00:16:03] Yeah.

[00:16:04] I saw that shot.

[00:16:05] I was like, oh, they were, they were trying to see if people would watch a show about this

[00:16:10] guy.

[00:16:10] Yeah.

[00:16:11] Well, yeah.

[00:16:12] Insofar as they might've been thinking like, let's keep him here as the permanent captain,

[00:16:18] maybe.

[00:16:19] But from what I believe I have read, they were sort of blindsided by the demand for a Pike

[00:16:25] led series after he exited the show.

[00:16:28] Um, so that could be, I mean, it could just be that folks figured, okay, he's going to

[00:16:32] stay here.

[00:16:33] And like we heard from Akiva Goldsman, whose name was also in the credits, he just assumed

[00:16:39] this was a show about Pike when they asked him to work on it.

[00:16:42] So he was like, I'm going to make that.

[00:16:46] Good for him.

[00:16:47] Glad he did.

[00:16:49] I hate to say, I, I, I haven't watched disco season one in a long time.

[00:16:53] We get dropped right into the red signals.

[00:16:55] I'm like, crap, were there red signals in season one?

[00:16:59] Were we already getting these?

[00:17:01] Okay.

[00:17:01] Okay.

[00:17:02] They were just, they were, they were, I think like on a routine, uh, uh, trek to Vulcan where

[00:17:08] they're going to pick up their new captain.

[00:17:10] And they just get a call and it was like, yeah.

[00:17:12] And then they met the enterprise.

[00:17:13] Yeah.

[00:17:13] Yeah.

[00:17:13] Okay.

[00:17:14] Okay.

[00:17:14] That's what I thought.

[00:17:16] I remember that moment at the end of season one too.

[00:17:18] I was just like, Oh, they're doing it.

[00:17:20] I'm so excited.

[00:17:21] I don't know why they're doing it or what they're going to do with it, but okay.

[00:17:25] Like, yeah.

[00:17:26] So, yeah, I, I mean, it works really well.

[00:17:28] And I, there's a, there's a conversation between Sarek and Michael where they talk about

[00:17:36] how reverence tends to fill up a room.

[00:17:38] And I feel like that's almost like the whole point of this episode or at least like the

[00:17:44] way it was built.

[00:17:45] Right.

[00:17:46] Because we have this captain that we know almost nothing about, but we all love in Pike

[00:17:50] from the cage.

[00:17:51] And they're talking about Spock the whole time.

[00:17:54] And it's like, the writers are really trying to get back to the roots of Star Trek with

[00:18:01] some of these characters while maintaining Discovery's own identity.

[00:18:06] Right.

[00:18:06] So it's kind of like them acknowledging like, yes, we're going to, we're going to do some

[00:18:10] old school stuff here.

[00:18:11] Okay.

[00:18:12] Relax.

[00:18:13] It's still Discovery.

[00:18:14] And I, I also really want hollow candles.

[00:18:18] You blow one out.

[00:18:19] They all extinguish.

[00:18:20] That was cool.

[00:18:20] That was cool.

[00:18:21] That, I mean, the hollow candles hit me hard with as much a flame versus hollow flame discussion

[00:18:26] we have.

[00:18:29] Yeah.

[00:18:29] I was like, Ooh, one notch for Jesse in that argument.

[00:18:32] Damn it.

[00:18:35] I do want to go back to the Spock reveal though, because it was a very reminiscent of the Kirk

[00:18:41] fake out in strange new worlds is premiere.

[00:18:43] Right.

[00:18:44] Oh yeah.

[00:18:44] Very similar.

[00:18:46] Yeah.

[00:18:46] I mean, they're like flat out.

[00:18:49] It's almost the same exact setup.

[00:18:50] We say his name, we say his name again.

[00:18:52] We talk about like, Oh yeah, Kirk, Kirk's coming.

[00:18:54] Yep.

[00:18:54] Yep.

[00:18:55] Like, nope.

[00:18:56] They use science officer, but yeah, I mean, we've already, they use the name to establish

[00:19:00] that Spock's over there and yeah.

[00:19:03] Yeah.

[00:19:03] Total Spock block.

[00:19:05] That's, that's, that's Connelly's nickname now.

[00:19:06] Spock block until he dies, which I'm kind of like, what is the point of his character?

[00:19:12] Is his character, is the point of his character simply to fake us out about Spock?

[00:19:17] I think so.

[00:19:18] But also, I think, or I think, I know what you're going to say, Jesse, go for it.

[00:19:22] I was going to say he's there to be the, like, I don't like this Michael Burnham character.

[00:19:28] She knows everything.

[00:19:29] This isn't Star Trek.

[00:19:31] Star Trek is about the crew.

[00:19:33] Like, no, fuck you.

[00:19:34] You're dead.

[00:19:34] Like he really earns, I think it's the writers kind of jabbing at a certain segment of their

[00:19:41] audience.

[00:19:42] Maybe after season one.

[00:19:44] Yeah.

[00:19:44] Right.

[00:19:44] But he also earns his explosion, at least like the guy sucks.

[00:19:49] Well, that's what I mean.

[00:19:50] It feels like they brought him on for the joke and they're like, well, we can't have this

[00:19:52] Kai around because we know Spock's coming eventually.

[00:19:54] Well, we got to write him off.

[00:19:55] We'll have him die.

[00:19:56] Well, if we're going to have him die, then we have to have him be a jerk.

[00:19:58] And it felt a little, uh, a little, uh, uh, causal that way to me.

[00:20:03] Yeah.

[00:20:04] Yeah.

[00:20:04] Well, and it's also a slight head fake because non is wearing the red uniform and Pike specifically

[00:20:10] says to her, get your red shirt into an EVA suit.

[00:20:14] Yeah.

[00:20:15] Yeah.

[00:20:15] So it's like, this is a head fake.

[00:20:18] It's, you know, it's homage to previous Star Trek lore and everything.

[00:20:22] And I'm, I'm here for it.

[00:20:25] I wanted Connolly to die.

[00:20:26] Like I did not like him at all.

[00:20:28] And I feel like part of it obviously too, is the stakes, right?

[00:20:34] Because if you put Burnham and Pike in those pods, it's like, well, they're going to make

[00:20:39] it like, but you've got these two other characters we don't know anything about.

[00:20:44] So one of those characters has to eat it on the way down.

[00:20:48] That's just, that's math.

[00:20:49] Yeah.

[00:20:50] There's that.

[00:20:51] Yeah.

[00:20:51] And I like, again, the EVA suits tight, tight, tight EVA suits.

[00:20:58] And I was kind of curious, like, man, disco really does have a ton of room.

[00:21:02] If they can build a rotating lowering floor just to launch these four pods, like, boy,

[00:21:09] they do throw a lot of money at this show.

[00:21:11] Experimental pods.

[00:21:12] Right.

[00:21:12] So they say, or like very, very specific use pods.

[00:21:15] Yeah.

[00:21:15] Yeah.

[00:21:15] Yeah.

[00:21:16] That shuttle bay.

[00:21:17] I don't care is cool.

[00:21:19] Like I agree with you that it is probably over-designed, but like, it's cool.

[00:21:24] And I don't care.

[00:21:25] Oh yeah.

[00:21:26] Shuttle bay in general.

[00:21:27] Like I, you know, we saw it in season five to disco shuttle, a pretty freaking cool.

[00:21:32] Pretty.

[00:21:32] Like it does a lot of stuff.

[00:21:34] It probably does more than any other ship shuttle bay has that we've ever gotten to

[00:21:38] see.

[00:21:38] Okay.

[00:21:38] We're talking about the shuttle bay.

[00:21:39] So I'm just going to jump to the end of the episode.

[00:21:41] Do it.

[00:21:42] So do this crazy maneuver to capture an asteroid, which I'm like, I don't know that grapplers

[00:21:47] back in enterprise day.

[00:21:48] There was not an easier way to get this asteroid.

[00:21:50] Okay.

[00:21:50] That's cool.

[00:21:50] This is a cool maneuver.

[00:21:51] I'm fine with that.

[00:21:52] They do this crazy thing.

[00:21:54] I'm guessing they're breaking to let the asteroid fly into the shuttle bay and then get caught

[00:21:58] by this thing that they've set up.

[00:22:00] And they have the entire ship's crew in the shuttle bay in the hangar.

[00:22:05] Yeah.

[00:22:06] Why are they there?

[00:22:07] In the hazardous zone.

[00:22:07] You only need most like two people to man that thing.

[00:22:11] One failure of that gravity thing and half the crew is wiped out.

[00:22:15] Yes.

[00:22:15] At least.

[00:22:16] There was at least like 60 people in that hangar bay.

[00:22:19] Now, like total headcanon counterpoint.

[00:22:22] It probably took a ton of math to make that work.

[00:22:25] And that's why Tilly says this is the power of math.

[00:22:28] And they were all doing these little micro calculations and adjustments and reroutes the

[00:22:32] whole time just to make that work.

[00:22:35] And they're all engineers.

[00:22:36] But to your point.

[00:22:37] They have comms.

[00:22:39] Yeah.

[00:22:39] We have comms.

[00:22:40] We have comms.

[00:22:41] It's the present.

[00:22:42] And we can do this.

[00:22:43] In 1960s NASA, they wouldn't have done that.

[00:22:45] Yeah.

[00:22:46] It does seem like a workplace hazard.

[00:22:48] I will grant you that.

[00:22:49] To be fair, if I heard that was happening, I'd be like, oh, I'm going to be there.

[00:22:52] I'm going to see that shit.

[00:22:53] I want to watch that.

[00:22:55] Well, let's go in here from one of our engineers.

[00:22:57] We have a few callers tonight.

[00:22:59] And Engineer Mark is up first.

[00:23:02] Hi, Open Pike Knight.

[00:23:04] Engineer Mark here.

[00:23:05] On this subject, I would actually go a little bit more meta.

[00:23:09] In seeing Enterprise show up after the Klingon war had ended and then Captain Pike temporarily

[00:23:15] joined Discovery.

[00:23:16] What were your impressions then?

[00:23:19] And how is it now watching it again with two seasons of Strange New Worlds already behind

[00:23:24] us?

[00:23:25] For us, watching Discovery the first time, we both enjoyed seeing more of Pike as what

[00:23:32] we only knew of him was from the original series pilot and the beep chair episode.

[00:23:37] I had no clue this backdoor pilot in Discovery would launch the wonderful series we have now.

[00:23:43] Am I watching it now?

[00:23:45] With Anson bringing up a fully formed Captain Pike right from the first scene?

[00:23:49] He is Captain of the Enterprise.

[00:23:51] Can't believe it.

[00:23:52] We missed it back then.

[00:23:54] So, what are your thoughts?

[00:23:56] Live long and prosper.

[00:23:58] Yeah, so we've gone over this a little bit talking about our first impressions of Pike

[00:24:02] there.

[00:24:02] But I'm trying to think back to the first time I watched it.

[00:24:07] Because I did watch, I don't think I watched it like week to week when Disco was coming out.

[00:24:12] But I caught up on the seasons as they finished up.

[00:24:15] I definitely, this is definitely one of my favorite seasons.

[00:24:18] It might be my favorite season of the entire series of Discovery.

[00:24:22] And a big part of that is the addition of Pike.

[00:24:25] But also, I like the Red Angel adventure.

[00:24:28] I think it's a good Star Trek adventure.

[00:24:31] I agree with that.

[00:24:33] And I think to get a little more specific from what I was saying earlier, the micro expressions

[00:24:38] that we have come to know and love from Anson Mount.

[00:24:42] It brings so much to his character as Pike.

[00:24:46] And like Mark was saying, it is here on day one.

[00:24:49] Like toward the end of the episode, he gives this look when Burnham runs off of the pad

[00:24:54] to reroute power so that he and Reno can beam off.

[00:24:58] That's like, he's impressed.

[00:25:00] He is like kind of gobsmacked that she's choosing to do that.

[00:25:06] And he's also accepting like, okay, this is the person for this job.

[00:25:12] And you get all that in a single look.

[00:25:14] And then he runs and says, burn him right as he's beaming out.

[00:25:18] And it's like, man, this guy can freaking act.

[00:25:22] And I agree with you, Mark.

[00:25:24] It was there on day one.

[00:25:26] Some of the specifics get, you know, rejiggered and smoothed out.

[00:25:30] But like the core of what we love about this Pike is here right away.

[00:25:35] Yeah, I was watching it behind.

[00:25:37] So I knew that Pike was coming in season two when I saw the end of season one.

[00:25:43] I forget, you know, I didn't think much about it.

[00:25:46] I'm a big fan of Greenwood's Pike from the Kelvin verse movies.

[00:25:50] Yes.

[00:25:51] Thought he was great there.

[00:25:52] So I knew the character watching it now.

[00:25:56] You know what we said before.

[00:25:58] What I like is that I like watching him.

[00:26:00] This goes a lot to what Jesse was just saying.

[00:26:02] He and Michael are really sizing each other up this whole episode.

[00:26:05] Yeah.

[00:26:06] And it really is like two equals to like, right.

[00:26:10] Gods among men.

[00:26:12] Can we call these characters like two people who just excel the shit out of their jobs being

[00:26:17] like, oh, you you might actually be on my level.

[00:26:20] Okay, we might be able to do some stuff together here.

[00:26:24] I've got the brains and you've got the brawn.

[00:26:26] Wait, no, you've got the brawn too.

[00:26:27] And I've also wait, we both have.

[00:26:29] Okay, we can make this happen.

[00:26:31] And there's there's a lot of that.

[00:26:33] And so, yeah, it by the end of the episode, it really does feel almost like he is joining

[00:26:39] Michael at the head of the show.

[00:26:43] And also kind of what you guys are saying.

[00:26:45] I did not like this season watching it.

[00:26:47] And I remember being like, I love the character of Pike and he is shining and like the only

[00:26:53] thing pulling me through the season.

[00:26:55] And so I am very excited to go back and rewatch the season.

[00:26:58] Now, having watched Strange New Worlds, willing to give it a bit more of a chance because I

[00:27:02] did like season three and five.

[00:27:03] I liked a lot and it grew.

[00:27:05] And so it grew from three.

[00:27:07] And Jesse and I have talked a lot about this where since I didn't like it, I would sometimes

[00:27:11] go months between episodes and then come into an episode and be like, okay, why the fuck

[00:27:15] are they on this planet?

[00:27:15] What is happening?

[00:27:17] Who's this character?

[00:27:18] And Jesse has told me.

[00:27:20] You can't do that.

[00:27:22] You have to either binge this season or watch it week to week because otherwise it will not

[00:27:28] make any sense and you will feel very lost the whole time.

[00:27:31] So I'm excited to give it a fair shake that way.

[00:27:34] Hopefully every two weeks will be close enough.

[00:27:36] Yeah.

[00:27:36] Yeah.

[00:27:37] And I, to answer your question directly, Engineer Mark, this was my introduction to Pike Prime.

[00:27:44] I had seen the 2009 Pike from the movies, but I didn't know original Pike.

[00:27:50] Like I, I had no experience of the cage at this time.

[00:27:53] And I watched this show as it was coming out with my dad and the way his eyes lit up when

[00:28:02] Pike came onto the bridge.

[00:28:03] I was like, oh, this is something meaningful.

[00:28:06] I hope this character is great.

[00:28:08] And by the end of this episode, I was completely sold.

[00:28:11] Yeah.

[00:28:13] But he's not the only great character in this episode because they do make it down to the

[00:28:18] asteroid.

[00:28:19] And man, I, I forgot again.

[00:28:22] I was like, cause I was thinking before this, like, man, when did Jet Reno show up?

[00:28:25] Oh, she shows up at the beginning of episode two or season two.

[00:28:29] That's crazy.

[00:28:30] This is one of the few things I did remember about this episode and I was waiting for it.

[00:28:34] Yeah.

[00:28:34] I'd forgotten it completely.

[00:28:37] Well, and talk about another character that is exactly who we know her to be right from

[00:28:42] instant one, right?

[00:28:43] Like she's not even on screen yet and she's being snarky and confident and like a ton of

[00:28:50] fun right away.

[00:28:51] And yeah, I, I really, really love Jet Reno and I am going to say this here so that I'm

[00:29:00] not tempted to say it every episode and every time I talk about discovery from here on out,

[00:29:06] but I really do not care if anybody out there doesn't like Michael Burnham.

[00:29:12] I love Michael Burnham.

[00:29:14] I love that she loves her job is good at it and is always having fun doing it.

[00:29:19] When she launches in that pod, she gets that little smile on her face and you're like,

[00:29:24] this is her element.

[00:29:25] She's an action oriented Starfleet officer, just like a lot of the officers we love.

[00:29:31] It's just that this series mostly focuses on one character instead of on all the characters,

[00:29:36] which is what we're used to.

[00:29:37] So I will brook no Michael Burnham hate.

[00:29:40] We're going to be talking about this a lot this season.

[00:29:43] You always say that Jesse.

[00:29:44] I mean, I, Michael's the main character.

[00:29:47] She's it's her voiceover at the beginning and end.

[00:29:49] I get that, but this show focuses on a lot of characters.

[00:29:53] Uh, for instance, I can't imagine anything worse than a coworker suddenly opening up to

[00:29:59] me and telling me about their dead spouse.

[00:30:01] And, uh, so, you know, let's, you know, Anthony Rapp has a lot of screen time in the show and

[00:30:06] a lot of dramatic stuff to chew on.

[00:30:08] Saru, I have your, everyone.

[00:30:10] I think, I think this foe, I don't think the show focuses too much on one character,

[00:30:13] but the serialization and the tone is vastly different from what we've seen in other shows.

[00:30:20] Well, and I don't disagree with that.

[00:30:22] And, and unlike other shows, there's not going to be an episode where Michael's not in it

[00:30:26] or only shows up at the end, like would happen to even the card sometimes.

[00:30:29] So there is that you're right.

[00:30:30] But I would say that's the truth for all of the characters.

[00:30:34] I mean, we do get that episode in season three, but there is, there is something to be said

[00:30:40] for how a lot of these characters compliment Michael's arc, right?

[00:30:45] Like, yes, Stamets is dealing with a very specific kind of grief, but Michael is the queen of grief.

[00:30:53] Like she, she's lost everybody, right?

[00:30:55] She, she lost, uh, Shahzad Latif in season one.

[00:30:59] She, she lost her parents.

[00:31:01] Like she lost her brother.

[00:31:02] So it's, there's, it's all part of one narrative thread.

[00:31:07] So I can understand where the criticism of this is all about Michael comes from, but I'm on the same page as you cam,

[00:31:15] where I don't think it is all about Michael.

[00:31:17] I just, I think that there is enough balance to your point that people should relax a little bit.

[00:31:24] I'm just saying like, of the many characters we get, Michael is one of my favorite, especially in discovery.

[00:31:32] And she definitely has, I mean, there is a spectrum of, you know, I'll call it action.

[00:31:37] Michael on one side and feelings.

[00:31:38] Michael on the other side, this was definitely a almost entirely action.

[00:31:42] Michael episode, even when like, it's like, okay, we're going to mention Spock and we're going to show the flashbacks.

[00:31:47] But like today in this episode, what's going on?

[00:31:50] It's like, oh, this is all action.

[00:31:51] Michael the whole time.

[00:31:52] Okay.

[00:31:52] And like cam said, she loves it.

[00:31:55] She loves, you know, she is an ACE test pilot.

[00:31:59] She is a skilled star fleet officer, you know, maybe a mutineer and also a prisoner, but we know it's like, Hey, that's just the, that's just me.

[00:32:08] She has a diverse, uh, you know, employment background.

[00:32:11] Uh, we prefer the term justified mutineer here.

[00:32:15] There we go.

[00:32:16] Um, and she is a great conduit in this episode for Pike to learn, to trust the crew.

[00:32:23] Like, yeah, because you know, he does have that moment where he's like, okay, stop saying no, just give me the answer.

[00:32:29] And she's like, I am about to honey, just relax.

[00:32:33] Like, but for me, it's entirely wrapped up in the line where she goes, discovery has you.

[00:32:38] And then she goes, Oh wait, we do have him right ladies.

[00:32:42] Yeah.

[00:32:42] And it cuts back to the bridge.

[00:32:45] And it cuts back to the bridge.

[00:32:45] And Depp Murnow were like, uh, totally.

[00:32:47] Yeah.

[00:32:47] Like we got this.

[00:32:48] Like to me, that moment really crystallizes everything about this episode.

[00:32:53] Like, yes, you can trust the crew of the discovery.

[00:32:56] Yes.

[00:32:56] They are as good and as capable as the enterprise crew that you have left behind.

[00:33:01] Just relax.

[00:33:03] And then Michael Burnham is going to catch you in free fall in frigging space.

[00:33:07] Like this show has no shortage of amazing visuals.

[00:33:13] Yeah.

[00:33:13] Or budget.

[00:33:14] And this show has no shortage of amazing colors.

[00:33:17] And so let's hear from another one.

[00:33:19] Here is Melanie.

[00:33:21] Hi guys.

[00:33:22] Here's Melanie.

[00:33:22] Melanie, you wanted to hear my thoughts on brother and Anson Mount as Christopher Pike.

[00:33:27] So I try not to geek out, I promise.

[00:33:29] But I think everyone knows by now that I am a huge fan of Anson Mount.

[00:33:33] Seeing him in disco the first time, I was like, wow, they've got Christopher Pike.

[00:33:37] Being a long time trackie raised with TOS, I knew about Pike.

[00:33:41] I loved the idea of bringing him into this.

[00:33:43] And I also loved Anson in it.

[00:33:45] When I learned he got his own series, I was definitely getting into fun girl mode.

[00:33:49] Back to brother.

[00:33:50] I think it is fast paced.

[00:33:51] A lot is going on in this episode.

[00:33:53] We get to see the Enterprise.

[00:33:55] There are many scenes I love and I tell you only a couple of them now.

[00:33:58] Like the turbo lift scenes.

[00:34:01] Lionel is cuffing slime on Cornoli.

[00:34:03] I like the roll call and we finally learn the names of the bridge crew.

[00:34:07] I also love how he smiles at Tilly, her usual awkward self, and jokes with her because

[00:34:12] Oh my god, I broke the captain!

[00:34:14] I love to first hit it.

[00:34:16] And we have him lay this right when the pot malfunctions and Michael wants to catch him.

[00:34:20] He replaced Locker and took over a traumatized crew, and they already like him.

[00:34:25] Well, I think Anson gives Pike a grand entrance.

[00:34:28] He is a kind but demanding hands-on captain.

[00:34:31] He is brave.

[00:34:32] He tries to engage the crew, ask for ideas, and not only issues orders.

[00:34:36] He appears different on Disco than later on Enterprise, but the way he includes his crew in decision-making

[00:34:41] is just the same.

[00:34:43] I love the fortune cookie paper he finds in the ready room in the end.

[00:34:46] And I love how they show that sitting on the wall took its toll on Pike, Spock, and the crew.

[00:34:51] So, I love this.

[00:34:53] I don't know how often I watch this episode.

[00:34:55] Live long and prosper.

[00:34:57] Yeah, but he did get an F in astrophysics.

[00:35:00] So, I'd say even balance there, right?

[00:35:04] Who among us has not failed a high-level physics class?

[00:35:08] Do you know how hard it is to get an F in anything?

[00:35:11] It's hard.

[00:35:12] You're not going to that class if you get an F.

[00:35:14] That's what I guess.

[00:35:14] You gotta not show up.

[00:35:16] He's out riding horses for that class.

[00:35:18] Like every show, there's always like the overachievers be like,

[00:35:20] but I got an F in this.

[00:35:22] Like, that means you just didn't show up.

[00:35:23] That means you didn't care, is what you're saying.

[00:35:25] Because you knew your grades were good enough.

[00:35:27] Yeah, you didn't take the step to put the W in there for withdrawn.

[00:35:31] Like, the school didn't bother to do it for you.

[00:35:34] You just missed the cutoff date to drop the class.

[00:35:38] So, we know from our Discord that Melanie claims to have struggled with putting this call together

[00:35:44] because she couldn't fit it all in.

[00:35:45] And I gotta say, you guys, if we ever retire, let's just give the show to Melanie

[00:35:50] because she just went like bullet listed through half of my notes.

[00:35:54] Like, exact same page on all this stuff.

[00:35:57] Excellent, excellent call, Melanie.

[00:35:59] And thank you for going to the trouble to do that.

[00:36:01] I have to say, that moment where Pike finds the leftover fortune from one of Lorca's fortune cookies,

[00:36:10] I think that, and it's got that mention of like, not every cage is whatever, right?

[00:36:18] That is a better Easter egg placement than anything the MCU has ever done.

[00:36:26] Come at me.

[00:36:27] It just is.

[00:36:28] I know there's a lot to choose from from the MCU.

[00:36:31] Not all of it's good, but some of it's really good.

[00:36:33] But I can't think of anything I'm a fan, so I won't come at you.

[00:36:36] At least the fortune didn't say your future is burning bright or something like that.

[00:36:41] That's for open Pike night to make jokes about.

[00:36:44] Yeah.

[00:36:45] Right.

[00:36:45] And then, you know, layer that Terminator 2 theme song over it.

[00:36:48] Exactly.

[00:36:49] But it's so subtle because if you didn't watch season one, you're like, okay, that's a nice callback to the cage, you know, or whatever.

[00:36:59] But if you did watch season one, you're like, oh yeah, he ate food in there specifically from a Chinese restaurant.

[00:37:05] And like, that makes sense that that fortune cookie thing would be there.

[00:37:10] And it's like, it works on so many levels as to be subtle enough, but also specific enough that that's why I'm like, this is how you do an Easter egg, right?

[00:37:20] It's not something that you have to point at and go, ooh, ooh, it says Dr. Banner.

[00:37:26] That's the Hulk, right?

[00:37:28] Like, it's just here.

[00:37:29] This is some character work in a one line thing here.

[00:37:32] And yeah, like, Pike is kind of the stepdad in this episode, right?

[00:37:37] He's showing up.

[00:37:38] He's like, look, I know you've been mistreated.

[00:37:40] I'm just here to do the job that I'm here to do.

[00:37:43] And by the end of it, they all totally accept him because he's not a stepdad.

[00:37:47] He's the dad who stepped up.

[00:37:50] Well, he had to step up because it was a standing desk.

[00:37:52] Right.

[00:37:54] Probably for the best that they kept the scene where he then fired the instance who were responsible for cleaning the office.

[00:37:59] Seriously.

[00:38:00] Was it a dot?

[00:38:00] Was it like, where is janitorial?

[00:38:03] Do you guys not have a Roomba that would have caught this?

[00:38:05] Come on.

[00:38:06] Okay.

[00:38:07] Even that though, like him talking about how he wants his ready room to be, that translates directly into the design of Strange New Worlds and the conference room.

[00:38:17] It's like, I want my officers, people to feel like they could pull up a chair and hang out and talk to me.

[00:38:22] Let's give him a giant table with 18 seats at it and warm lighting.

[00:38:27] It just, there's so much in this moment that ends up mattering later.

[00:38:33] And it's, it's just there.

[00:38:34] Here's the other thing that struck me watching this episode that relates to Strange New Worlds is forgetting how much budget they poured into this and just the overall kind of tone and stakes of discovery and knowing what happens later in the season.

[00:38:51] Everything in Strange New Worlds has been a walk in the park for Pike.

[00:38:54] We haven't seen him do anything half as dangerous as what he did in this single episode.

[00:38:59] Yep.

[00:38:59] Yeah.

[00:39:00] Like fighting Gorn on a starship, teetering on the edge of the cliff, yawning through that after this.

[00:39:06] Yep.

[00:39:06] Yeah.

[00:39:07] Yeah, absolutely.

[00:39:08] You know, battling into a castle with no memories.

[00:39:11] Like, okay, whatever.

[00:39:13] Yeah.

[00:39:13] Whatever.

[00:39:13] Yeah.

[00:39:14] I mean, that was, that's what really struck me as seeing him.

[00:39:17] And I'm sure it's going to struck me even more when we see, uh, uh, Una and Spock come on, but just the tonal difference between discovery and Strange New Worlds.

[00:39:25] And I'm not saying one's better than the other, but you know, and most people agree they are very different, but just coming back and watching the season with that actor, that character, it's like, oh yeah, here's the differences between these shows.

[00:39:37] Yeah.

[00:39:39] And, and he doesn't have, you know, I was thinking about it like with him there with the malfunctioning helmet and the ejection, like, oh, that's right.

[00:39:46] He doesn't know.

[00:39:47] He doesn't know.

[00:39:48] Right.

[00:39:48] He thinks he is about to die.

[00:39:50] He fully believes at this moment.

[00:39:52] Like, oh, it's, it's fun.

[00:39:53] It's fun.

[00:39:54] We get to see Pike like that for part of this season.

[00:39:57] And you see him accept that on his face.

[00:40:00] Like, he's like, just go do the mission.

[00:40:03] Like you don't like, you clearly are capable.

[00:40:06] Just go do it.

[00:40:07] And then he's surprised when the helmet finally works.

[00:40:10] It's, I mean, you know, people, uh, the term, this episode is a roller coaster gets bandied around a lot, but like this episode is physically a roller coaster.

[00:40:21] There is a lot going on.

[00:40:23] Um, inconceivable.

[00:40:25] There we go.

[00:40:26] Inconceivable.

[00:40:27] And we get a lot, a lot of imagery with Michael Burnham and doors in this episode.

[00:40:34] There's those cross cuts between doors on different ships, her at the door of the Vulcan house, her at the door of the bridge, her at the door of her quarters, Sarek walking through the door.

[00:40:43] There there's the door that she gets locked behind off the transporter pad.

[00:40:46] I mean, there are a lot of doors here and it's almost like looking back now, we'd know that it's a promise that at the end of this season, disco is going to go through the ultimate door into season three.

[00:41:01] And you guys, I love that episode.

[00:41:04] I cannot wait until we get to the end of the, of this season.

[00:41:07] Like, Oh my God.

[00:41:09] I haven't seen this in a very, very long time.

[00:41:11] I haven't seen this since before the pandemic.

[00:41:13] And it's like, Oh, I'm, I'm glad we're doing this again.

[00:41:16] I'm glad we're covering this again.

[00:41:17] I get to rediscover it.

[00:41:19] Hey, hey, hey.

[00:41:20] Yeah.

[00:41:21] I'm looking forward to giving it a shot.

[00:41:22] Uh, quick question.

[00:41:24] Is this the first time someone's ever tried to shake Saru's hand?

[00:41:27] Why does he look so confused by that?

[00:41:31] I don't actually know.

[00:41:33] I think it's probably that he.

[00:41:35] Maybe because he's the captain.

[00:41:37] Well, and maybe cause like, if you've listened to like the greatest track, you know, that his hands look really gross.

[00:41:48] Like the prosthetics for his hands are very gross looking.

[00:41:51] Like, I'm just going to say that.

[00:41:53] Um, so it, you know, it could have been a nod to them going, yeah, he's got gross fingers.

[00:41:59] People don't offer this to him very often.

[00:42:02] You don't want to shake my hand, captain.

[00:42:03] Okay.

[00:42:04] Okay.

[00:42:04] Fair.

[00:42:05] Yeah.

[00:42:06] And you know, this isn't like TNG or deep space nine, or I mean, even strange new worlds.

[00:42:12] Like I remember very, like a lot of plot points from discovery, but I was like, oh, he's still got his threat ganglia.

[00:42:19] That didn't get taken care of, taken care of in the first season.

[00:42:21] Like, wait, what season does that get taken care of?

[00:42:24] Okay.

[00:42:25] I forgot that that was, yeah.

[00:42:27] Probably my least favorite episode of the season.

[00:42:29] So we'll be bored of talking about that.

[00:42:31] Oh yeah.

[00:42:31] Well, and even that gets planted right here.

[00:42:34] He mentions his sister Serana, but Cameron, I just realized it is meant to show again that Pike is old fashioned.

[00:42:42] How many times have you seen a, how many times have you seen a handshake in Star Trek?

[00:42:45] Like it's not a common greeting anymore.

[00:42:48] No.

[00:42:49] Like it's him, it's him being like very down home earth style guy.

[00:42:54] Like, well, shake your hand.

[00:42:55] Cause it's like, they don't do that in the future.

[00:42:57] They tap their badge or whatever.

[00:42:59] You know, they just, they say, I captain, like there's no handshakes in Star Trek.

[00:43:03] If you really think about it.

[00:43:05] Yeah.

[00:43:06] Now, now I've got to go through and count them.

[00:43:08] Yeah.

[00:43:08] That's your point.

[00:43:09] I think Terry O'Quinn shakes his hand when he, when in the, it takes Picard's hand or Riker's hand.

[00:43:14] I can't remember.

[00:43:15] And he is an equally old school.

[00:43:18] Yep.

[00:43:18] Exactly.

[00:43:20] So what do you think about the scene?

[00:43:22] This is just one of those small things that kind of bug me where they're walking onto the ship before they've met Tig Notaro, but they're hearing her over the drones.

[00:43:29] And she says, stop, look down.

[00:43:32] I don't feel like cleaning up a decapitation or something.

[00:43:35] And there's like a trip wire there that they have to walk over.

[00:43:39] And I'm just like, why the fuck Tig Notaro Jet Reno?

[00:43:43] Would you wait until the last second to tell them that?

[00:43:47] Why not tell them before?

[00:43:48] Or clearly you have a way to turn it off and on.

[00:43:50] You have these drones you control.

[00:43:52] Why do you have a trip wire?

[00:43:53] I guess maybe you're afraid Klingons might show up.

[00:43:56] But again, you have drones who will alert you to anything on this crashed asteroid.

[00:44:01] It's just like the forced stakes.

[00:44:04] And I mean, it's a funny line.

[00:44:06] I don't want to clean up your decapitation, but.

[00:44:09] But she also said that she had recognized their Starfleet emblem on the video feed.

[00:44:14] So you know that she knows they're not Klingons.

[00:44:16] Exactly.

[00:44:17] Just turn the trip wire off.

[00:44:19] But to her credit, Cameron, she got a lot going on where she is.

[00:44:23] Her hands are literally full.

[00:44:25] Yes.

[00:44:26] Yeah.

[00:44:26] She's keeping a lot of people alive.

[00:44:28] Yeah.

[00:44:29] Well, tell them before you get to within a foot of the trip wire.

[00:44:32] Exactly.

[00:44:33] Well, she's also been there for a long time.

[00:44:35] Maybe she just forgot I was there.

[00:44:37] 10 months.

[00:44:37] Yeah.

[00:44:39] I remember thinking this the first time I saw this episode, like the drones when we first

[00:44:43] see them.

[00:44:44] And then as we see them again and again, I'm like.

[00:44:46] Man, I could just find that thing was like six feet tall when it first showed up because

[00:44:49] they're like, oh, I see parts of this.

[00:44:51] I see parts of this.

[00:44:52] Then you see the drones and they're like three inches tall leading them through the tunnel

[00:44:55] and go into a little pelican case.

[00:44:58] Like, how did they identify all of that from when the thing was just flying around them,

[00:45:03] shining a light in their face?

[00:45:05] Yeah.

[00:45:06] Yeah.

[00:45:07] They're hyper competent.

[00:45:08] Got a lot of microelectronics here.

[00:45:09] Yeah.

[00:45:10] Extremely competent when it comes to drone identification.

[00:45:13] But through and through, that's a fun scene.

[00:45:15] Like one of the best Star Trek character intro scenes ever.

[00:45:20] Yeah.

[00:45:20] Yeah.

[00:45:21] And you get her moment of realizing, oh, Michael Burnham is somebody I can work with when she's

[00:45:26] like, I'm going to go reroute this power.

[00:45:28] She's like, where were you 10 months ago?

[00:45:30] And it's almost a little flirty.

[00:45:31] And you're like, yeah, yes.

[00:45:33] Be friends with Michael.

[00:45:35] Michael rules.

[00:45:36] Mm hmm.

[00:45:37] And her moment of learning the war is over to.

[00:45:40] Like, yeah.

[00:45:42] It's a good moment.

[00:45:45] It really shows that she has both gears.

[00:45:47] I mean, I'm sure there are other gears.

[00:45:49] Right.

[00:45:49] But she has the snarky, like irreverent fun year.

[00:45:53] But she can also have that moment of like, oh, wow.

[00:45:57] Like all of my most of my problems are solved now.

[00:46:01] And I'm not super sure how to feel about that right away.

[00:46:04] Yeah.

[00:46:04] Mm hmm.

[00:46:05] Yeah.

[00:46:06] Just immediate salvation at the hands of random strangers who showed up.

[00:46:10] Yeah.

[00:46:12] Speaking of random strangers, I think we have one more call.

[00:46:15] Mine wasn't as good as yours, John.

[00:46:17] Let's go ahead and hear from our friend Platty.

[00:46:20] Hey, it's Platty M3 back again with my hit shits.

[00:46:23] And you know what?

[00:46:26] Let's dump the whole hits and misses duo thing and go with a little bit more humor from here on out.

[00:46:33] Oh.

[00:46:33] All right.

[00:46:35] Hey, open pike night.

[00:46:36] It's Platty M3 back again with my hit shits and giggles.

[00:46:39] Let's take a look at Discovery 201.

[00:46:43] All right.

[00:46:43] Hits.

[00:46:44] Holy cow.

[00:46:45] Right off the bat.

[00:46:45] Spock's childhood home.

[00:46:47] What is the square footage on that thing?

[00:46:49] Thank you.

[00:46:50] Oh, my gosh.

[00:46:50] Did you see that staircase with the blue paneled walls?

[00:46:53] Beautiful.

[00:46:54] But my goodness, how many floors up does that poor kid live?

[00:46:56] Also, my goodness, how beautiful are all those away mission outfits?

[00:47:01] Shiny as anything.

[00:47:03] My goodness.

[00:47:04] All right.

[00:47:04] Shits.

[00:47:04] Pike's hair in this episode.

[00:47:06] Oh, my gosh.

[00:47:06] Yeah.

[00:47:07] He does mention to Michael that sometimes it's better to keep expectations low as not to be disappointed for this episode.

[00:47:13] Like his hair.

[00:47:14] Yeah.

[00:47:14] Sad.

[00:47:15] Low expectations.

[00:47:16] Low hair.

[00:47:17] And giggles.

[00:47:19] All right, guys.

[00:47:19] This is just for you.

[00:47:20] John and Jesse, podcast good.

[00:47:24] Cameron, though, I think I need you to do something else.

[00:47:27] Repeat after me.

[00:47:29] I will say.

[00:47:30] I will say.

[00:47:33] Fewer things.

[00:47:34] Fewer things.

[00:47:36] All right, Plattie.

[00:47:37] I'm three out.

[00:47:37] New favorite call ever.

[00:47:39] Okay.

[00:47:40] I am the Tilly of the podcast.

[00:47:42] I thought that was me.

[00:47:44] Thank you, Plattie.

[00:47:44] I have like this huge weight just lifted off my shoulders right now.

[00:47:49] Wow.

[00:47:50] You should have seen Cameron's face.

[00:47:52] That was genuine when he when he gave that to you.

[00:47:54] Yeah.

[00:47:54] Wow.

[00:47:55] We're probably going to have to put that clip public.

[00:47:58] Oh, my gosh.

[00:47:59] That was so good.

[00:48:02] Plattie.

[00:48:02] The Tilly was perfect, too.

[00:48:04] It was.

[00:48:04] It really was.

[00:48:05] It's like he's done this before.

[00:48:08] It's like he knows.

[00:48:09] And it's and it sounds like Plattie has the opposite.

[00:48:12] It sounds like he has the opposite feelings on the blue paneled staircase that John does.

[00:48:16] Yeah.

[00:48:18] Way too claustrophobic.

[00:48:19] You'd be bouncing off that thing.

[00:48:21] You slip once.

[00:48:21] That wall is throwing you down the stairs.

[00:48:25] Well, and it's not good for nighttime walking.

[00:48:28] Right.

[00:48:28] Like blue light is not what you want.

[00:48:30] You want like red light or orange light at night because it's not going to wake you up all the way.

[00:48:35] And it's just enough to see.

[00:48:37] Yeah.

[00:48:38] Maybe it's like some kind of to Plattie's point about how high up Spock lives.

[00:48:42] Maybe it's some kind of like we keep the one child in the ivory tower.

[00:48:47] I don't know.

[00:48:48] He's up on a pedestal.

[00:48:50] Like the beginning of season two.

[00:48:53] We see.

[00:48:54] No one.

[00:48:54] We see him of Strange New Worlds.

[00:48:56] We see him up in a high tower with T'Pring also.

[00:48:59] Right.

[00:48:59] That's true.

[00:49:00] Like his intro is looking out over the mercury oceans of Vulcan.

[00:49:07] Maybe it's the people who make Star Trek physically placing Spock above most other characters like in the canon.

[00:49:16] Putting the Spock on the pedestal.

[00:49:17] Yeah.

[00:49:17] Yeah.

[00:49:18] I mean, you got to not do that, but I get it.

[00:49:20] Yeah.

[00:49:21] He was like, I really like the house, mom and dad.

[00:49:26] But like, why are we on ground level?

[00:49:29] And they're like, oh my God.

[00:49:29] Okay.

[00:49:30] We'll build you a new bedroom.

[00:49:33] And it's just more logical to add me another floor and another balcony.

[00:49:38] He's like, he just does logic arguments about that.

[00:49:41] That's how we got so good.

[00:49:43] That's what we got ready for colon R.

[00:49:45] Yeah.

[00:49:45] Actually, I should not be grounded logically because I could see that.

[00:49:51] Yeah.

[00:49:52] I love that we get to see his quarters on the Enterprise and that they really managed to evoke him without actually showing us Ethan Peck.

[00:50:31] Like, we do get to hear his voice.

[00:50:32] Then we get the reveal that he has somehow also seen these signals that are going to be our MacGuffin this season.

[00:50:39] And this is going to be my final flag plant in this episode.

[00:50:43] I still think the Red Angel signals are the best MacGuffin discovery ever did.

[00:50:51] Hmm.

[00:50:52] Hmm.

[00:50:53] I can get behind that.

[00:50:55] I don't care about the DMA.

[00:50:57] Like, I get the progenitor thing.

[00:50:59] But for me, this is the peak of it.

[00:51:03] I'll let you know by the end of the season.

[00:51:05] Yeah.

[00:51:06] Yeah.

[00:51:07] I'm sorry.

[00:51:07] The DMA was dead last for me of all the MacGuffins.

[00:51:10] DMA is way down there at the bottom.

[00:51:13] Hmm.

[00:51:14] Uh, speaking of MacGuffins and like, I have not seen this season in so long.

[00:51:19] Does the asteroid fragment matter for very long?

[00:51:22] No.

[00:51:23] Does the capture, like, is that a season long thing they're dealing with?

[00:51:28] But the non-baryonic particles and whole new arm of science.

[00:51:32] I'm like, ooh, does this keep going?

[00:51:34] Or is that just sort of a thing they did to start the season off?

[00:51:37] I feel like it ends up mattering later, but I don't think it's an ongoing thing that matters.

[00:51:45] If, if I remember correctly, which again, this episode, according to Cameron, aired in 1918.

[00:51:51] So I could be misremembering.

[00:51:53] It's true.

[00:51:53] Yeah.

[00:51:54] I might be part of one of those things where I was like, wait, was I supposed to remember that?

[00:51:57] I do think it comes back.

[00:51:59] But like, yeah, episodes later where I'm like, oh, right.

[00:52:01] That was a thing for a brief time.

[00:52:03] Okay.

[00:52:04] But I could be wrong.

[00:52:06] Yeah.

[00:52:06] I feel, I feel that it may end up being a time crystal adjacent thing, which you guys, I can't wait to get back to time crystals.

[00:52:14] Oh my gosh.

[00:52:16] Jesse's going to have to say fewer things on that episode.

[00:52:18] A hundred percent.

[00:52:22] Oh, well, do you guys have more things to say on this?

[00:52:24] I mean, this, this is a big episode of setup.

[00:52:26] There's a lot of setup that happens in this episode.

[00:52:28] Like really, if you talk about the plot of this episode, Pike comes aboard, they go to an asteroid, they pick up Jet Reno, they get off an asteroid.

[00:52:35] Something weird is happening.

[00:52:36] Yeah.

[00:52:37] Yeah.

[00:52:37] They capture a piece of asteroid.

[00:52:38] Like that is the whole, that is the arc of this episode.

[00:52:42] And then, oh, Spock has seen these signals too.

[00:52:45] Like, okay.

[00:52:46] Like this episode ends with just, yep.

[00:52:51] Okay.

[00:52:51] Now we're setting up the season.

[00:52:52] And it's like a, almost a prelude episode, episode, not a intro episode.

[00:52:57] It's a get people to watch the show episode.

[00:53:01] Yeah.

[00:53:01] The season premiere.

[00:53:02] I, yeah, I liked it.

[00:53:03] It was pretty good.

[00:53:04] I did too.

[00:53:05] I like, I like that, you know, just where we're doing the, say the name of the episode is the last word of the episode.

[00:53:12] Like if they had tried to do that without other track, it would have been a little awkward.

[00:53:18] I, and honestly, the whole time I'm watching it, I'm like, why is this episode called brother?

[00:53:26] It should be called stepdad.

[00:53:28] Like, why is it?

[00:53:29] What is good?

[00:53:30] There's two stepdads in this episode.

[00:53:32] What is happening?

[00:53:32] Oh, right.

[00:53:33] Okay.

[00:53:33] All right.

[00:53:34] There it is.

[00:53:36] I'm glad you were thinking that.

[00:53:37] Cause it's the same thing.

[00:53:37] I was like, man, I didn't think we met Spock till a while later in the season.

[00:53:43] All right.

[00:53:43] It's good to come back.

[00:53:45] It's good to watch it, watch it for a second time with, I don't know, I guess not fresh eyes, but definitely a different colored lenses and different experience.

[00:53:54] And I hope our listeners are enjoying going back and exploring it too.

[00:53:58] And just seeing like, oh, wow.

[00:54:00] There were a lot of changes between 2018 track and 2022 track when strange new worlds dropped and 2024 track when a discovery ended.

[00:54:10] So yeah.

[00:54:11] Mm-hmm.

[00:54:12] Did you have any other notes, Cam?

[00:54:14] Nope.

[00:54:15] All right.

[00:54:15] All right.

[00:54:15] Well, you may have noticed that the subtitle of our Discovery Season 2 coverage is Disco Inferno.

[00:54:52] So we thought, you know what?

[00:54:54] How did we make this playlist for Season 2?

[00:54:57] Cameron, please do the honors and give us your song pick for episode one.

[00:55:01] All right.

[00:55:01] So we kind of decided to do this last minute.

[00:55:03] So I didn't have a ton of time.

[00:55:04] I had a car trip today.

[00:55:06] So I tried to think about some of it.

[00:55:08] I had my wife help me.

[00:55:10] I'm happy with this pick.

[00:55:11] It might surprise some people.

[00:55:13] I'm going to go with from the movie Beaches.

[00:55:16] Oh.

[00:55:17] Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler.

[00:55:20] One, there's a lot of flying metaphors, which I think work well with this episode for obvious reasons.

[00:55:26] Two, you know, it's looking back on relationship with some remorse, some regret, which I think fits for Michael and Spock.

[00:55:35] And maybe a little bit with Stamets as well.

[00:55:38] You know, the refrain goes, did you ever know that you're my hero and everything I would like to be?

[00:55:47] I can fly higher than an eagle for you are the wind beneath my wings.

[00:55:50] That's right, Captain Pike.

[00:55:51] I'm talking to you.

[00:55:52] You are my hero and you lift us up and help us fly higher than we could without you.

[00:55:59] So that's my pick for Discovery Season 2, Episode 1, Brother.

[00:56:03] Wow.

[00:56:04] How hard?

[00:56:05] Mine is a wind-based one too, but I'm going to let Jesse go first.

[00:56:09] But man, Cam, I can't tell you how much you just dragged me back to like 1990.

[00:56:16] That song was played so much.

[00:56:22] Oh my God.

[00:56:23] We were listening to a lot of 90s music on this road trip.

[00:56:25] Yeah, nice.

[00:56:27] Cameron, was it hard for your brain not to say where suffering cannot reach after you said lift us up?

[00:56:32] Yeah, I feel like you almost said that.

[00:56:33] I felt like I saw a small glitch there.

[00:56:37] That's much more my style, but yes.

[00:56:39] I appreciate that you at least attempted to vocalize some of that seriously.

[00:56:44] If you ever get a chance to go karaoke with Cameron, do it.

[00:56:48] You will not be disappointed.

[00:56:51] I'm not going to do that because I chose a metal song and I don't want to hurt anybody's ears.

[00:56:58] But the song that I picked is called The Signal Fire by Killswitch Engage.

[00:57:04] And there's a couple of layers here.

[00:57:06] Okay.

[00:57:06] So lyrically, we get, can we walk a mile in another's shoes to determine what we have to lose?

[00:57:13] Nowhere to hide.

[00:57:14] Strength realigned.

[00:57:15] The signal fire is a light.

[00:57:18] But this is our beacon to deliver us all, to guide us away from this decay.

[00:57:24] Now, anybody, I mean, for me, that works right there.

[00:57:28] You got the signals.

[00:57:29] You got the fire.

[00:57:30] There's all this stuff going on.

[00:57:31] But for anybody that knows anything about Killswitch Engage, you will know that their original singer was with the band for a long time and then got really depressed and had to leave.

[00:57:43] Then a new singer came in who is somehow just as good and in some ways better.

[00:57:49] Wow.

[00:57:50] And I'm not going to get into that.

[00:57:52] But this song, The Signal Fire, actually features both lead singers on the same track, which to me is just perfect symmetry with this episode where we have all these allusions to Lorca, but we're meeting Pike, who is just as good a character, but for so many different reasons and in the opposite directions with how they are.

[00:58:16] However, please check out Killswitch Engage if you are at all into the heavier stuff and definitely start with The Signal Fire.

[00:58:26] All right.

[00:58:27] Well, I'm going to say now, since we're starting this tradition and carrying it on, are we going to all agree right now not to reuse any of our songs from season five?

[00:58:39] I'm definitely going to try not to.

[00:58:41] Okay.

[00:58:41] Yeah.

[00:58:42] I'm going to try not to.

[00:58:43] Yeah.

[00:58:44] Yeah.

[00:58:44] The first one I picked was like, oh, this is perfect.

[00:58:46] Yep.

[00:58:46] Definitely already used that.

[00:58:47] Yep.

[00:58:48] Yeah.

[00:58:48] And I could have used a song from this band that is wind based, but it was used in our season five coverage.

[00:58:58] You know, the song by the band Scorpions, Wind of Change.

[00:59:02] But instead, I feel it's much more appropriate to use the song, not the lyrics.

[00:59:07] The lyrics have nothing to do with this episode, but the chorus of Here I Am, Rock You Like a Hurricane.

[00:59:12] Rock You Like a Hurricane.

[00:59:14] Yes.

[00:59:15] Like, fits pretty well with the energy, the just appearance of Pike and everything that happens.

[00:59:24] Like, yeah.

[00:59:25] Scorpions, Here I Am, Rock You Like a Hurricane.

[00:59:28] God, I love that song, and I'm totally going to go listen to it right now.

[00:59:34] I wish they would release a version that has Sideshow Bob making fun of it, and then it starts playing the song, because I love that line from The Simpsons, too.

[00:59:43] So, yeah.

[00:59:44] Rock You Like a Hurricane.

[00:59:45] That's a good group of choices for this week.

[00:59:48] Good work.

[00:59:48] Actually, I might look up, like, a hardcore cover of that song.

[00:59:52] I really like metalcore covers of things.

[00:59:54] Yeah.

[00:59:55] For example, Killswitch Engage did Holy Diver by Dio, and it was, like, blew my mind in half.

[01:00:01] So, I'm going to go check out every version of Rock You Like a Hurricane.

[01:00:05] I'm going to go check out every version of Wind Beneath My Wings.

[01:00:07] So, yeah.

[01:00:09] I want to hear a hard rock version of that song.

[01:00:11] Yeah, I do, too.

[01:00:12] Sung by Bette Midler.

[01:00:14] In her Hocus Pocus makeup.

[01:00:16] You know she could do it.

[01:00:18] Hell, yeah.

[01:00:19] Well, we hope you have enjoyed our coverage of Discovery Season 2, Episode 1, Brother.

[01:00:25] Thank you to our fantastic callers tonight.

[01:00:27] Jesse, how can people call in and talk to us?

[01:00:31] No, Platy, you were great.

[01:00:33] Platy, you were perfect.

[01:00:34] Especially Platy.

[01:00:34] Everybody was perfect.

[01:00:36] Mark, Melanie, Platy, like, everybody who calls in is great.

[01:00:39] And, Jesse, how do you call in to talk about a six-year-old Star Trek show with us?

[01:00:45] It's weird that this is the oldest show we've ever done, right?

[01:00:48] Like, you guys are used to doing TNG and DS9.

[01:00:50] We did TOS.

[01:00:51] Yeah, we've done some TOS.

[01:00:52] That's true.

[01:00:52] That's true.

[01:00:53] We did do TOS.

[01:00:54] And we should do more.

[01:00:56] Anyways, as John was saying, the easiest way to call in to Open Pike Night is to just go to openpike.com.

[01:01:02] There's a little button right there that says record your voice, and you can record up to 90 seconds on the website.

[01:01:08] Send it in.

[01:01:09] We'll play it.

[01:01:10] Or, if you want, you can record separately to an MP3.

[01:01:14] Use your phone.

[01:01:15] Use a headset.

[01:01:16] Use whatever microphone you have access to.

[01:01:18] And send that MP3 to openpike at gmail dot com.

[01:01:23] And, Cameron, where can folks hear more from you and I?

[01:01:27] Well, if you're listening to this in the next few months, you can still catch our coverage of Star Trek The Next Generation, which I'm watching for the very first time.

[01:01:36] And we're also covering DS9 over there.

[01:01:38] But, yes, we are getting very close to the end of that.

[01:01:40] We should be finishing up very early in 2025 before you see any more strange new worlds.

[01:01:45] Probably.

[01:01:46] Almost definitely.

[01:01:47] But we'll cover the movies and most likely start getting into Picard over there once that's finished.

[01:01:52] You can find that at GreenShirt87 on Twitter or GreenShirt and Newbies Trek through TNG wherever you catch your pots.

[01:01:59] And for all you Trek fans out there, we are about to record the episode Masks.

[01:02:04] That's how far we are into GreenShirt and Newbies Trek through TNG.

[01:02:09] And, man, did I not remember that episode.

[01:02:12] I remembered, obviously, the masks, but I forgot so many details of that episode.

[01:02:17] I cannot wait to talk about it.

[01:02:19] It's going to be an interesting one to talk about.

[01:02:21] Yeah.

[01:02:21] Simultaneously, ooh, and...

[01:02:27] But it has been a long night, and the OpenPike Night crew has to go pick up just littered fortune cookie fortunes all over the floor.

[01:02:35] I don't know who we pay to sweep this place up, but they are not doing a good job.

[01:02:39] I'm not going to take any portents from anything I read.

[01:02:42] I'm just going to find the funniest stuff and post it.

[01:02:44] So be sure to clean up after yourself.

[01:02:46] Be sure to tip your servers.

[01:02:47] You can go anywhere you want, but you can't stay here.

[01:02:50] What was the exact fortune Pike got?

[01:02:53] Not every cage is a prison.

[01:02:56] Not every loss eternal.

[01:02:59] In bed.

[01:03:02] I always heard it as between the sheets, but yeah.

[01:03:05] Oh, yeah, I was always definitely in bed.

[01:03:08] Boy, cage, that brings some imagery out of me.

[01:03:15] Pike's out there looking for his key holder.

[01:03:17] Anyway, everybody, you guys have a great night.

[01:03:20] Thanks for listening to OpenPike Night.
