[00:00:12] [SPEAKER_06]: Welcome to Open Pike Night, the Strange New Worlds podcast where your personal logs are
[00:00:31] [SPEAKER_06]: the prime directive.
[00:00:32] [SPEAKER_06]: I am your host John T. Boulds here tonight with our wonderful callers on stage to help
[00:00:36] [SPEAKER_06]: us discuss all the new news in the universe of Star Trek.
[00:00:40] [SPEAKER_06]: But first let me introduce my co-hosts, the man who would sacrifice it all to spend
[00:00:45] [SPEAKER_06]: years at Starfleet Academy, Jesse Bailey.
[00:00:48] [SPEAKER_05]: Especially now that we know that Oded Fair is going to be there.
[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Like I would do anything to spend four years with Oded Fair.
[00:00:56] [SPEAKER_06]: Absolutely and the man who is so excited about everything coming soon to Trek that
[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_06]: he forgot to come to this recording, Cameron Harrison is not here with us tonight.
[00:01:06] [SPEAKER_05]: Not only that but I heard that he doesn't like Oded Fair and he does not even like
[00:01:11] [SPEAKER_05]: 1999's The Mummy.
[00:01:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Can you believe that?
[00:01:13] [SPEAKER_06]: He says they're just bland and forgettable actors in that movie.
[00:01:19] [SPEAKER_06]: Breaking my heart.
[00:01:20] [SPEAKER_06]: It's really too bad, Cam's opinion on movies.
[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_06]: Well tonight we're going to be discussing all the news about Trek that has been revealed
[00:01:28] [SPEAKER_06]: recently mostly at San Diego Comic Con and discuss what's coming up for Open Pike
[00:01:33] [SPEAKER_06]: Night while we still wait for more Strange New Worlds for I'm hoping we can say
[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_06]: more months at this point.
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, like I'm going to it's got to be late May.
[00:01:47] [SPEAKER_06]: If they push it to June there, I'm going to be pretty surprised.
[00:01:51] [SPEAKER_06]: I'll be surprised.
[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_05]: I'll be a little upset.
[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_05]: But yeah, I mean, like at this point, it's not even real, right?
[00:01:59] [SPEAKER_05]: Like even seeing the new clip, I was like, I still have to wait so long to see the
[00:02:05] [SPEAKER_05]: rest of this episode.
[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_05]: But, you know, they did something similar with the Ortega's clip from season two.
[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_05]: So I don't know.
[00:02:13] [SPEAKER_05]: You know, the real the big question is, is Paramount Plus going to even exist as
[00:02:19] [SPEAKER_05]: a separate app on your device by the time this season comes out?
[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Like, I have confidence we'll get to see the season.
[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_05]: I just am not super confident what banner it will be under.
[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_06]: On Tubi.
[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
[00:02:34] [SPEAKER_06]: OK, so we've got Thursday's next year.
[00:02:37] [SPEAKER_06]: Thursdays are May 22nd, 29th, June 5th, June 12th.
[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm going to put I'm going to say right now, I know we we've danced around
[00:02:45] [SPEAKER_06]: guessing. I'm going to say I think it's May 29th, 2025.
[00:02:48] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm did you say June 9th?
[00:02:51] [SPEAKER_06]: June 5th or June 12th?
[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_05]: OK, I'm going to guess June 5th because I'm trying to be not a pessimist,
[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_05]: but like I don't want to I don't want to get hurt again.
[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_05]: You know?
[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_05]: Yep. Yeah, no, that's fair.
[00:03:04] That's fair.
[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_06]: So, yeah, we're going to be talking about all the all the things that
[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_06]: that we got to we got treated to when San Diego Comic Con was going on.
[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_06]: And I think first up, we're going to start with the Section 31 trailer.
[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_06]: You want to start with our call about that first or do you want to start
[00:03:22] [SPEAKER_06]: with or our call associated with that?
[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_06]: Or do you want to start with just talking about the trailer?
[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_05]: I have to just ask you, John, because I think the day it dropped,
[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_05]: I asked if you guys had seen it and both of you were like,
[00:03:34] [SPEAKER_05]: we have jobs and real life man.
[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_05]: And I was like, OK, that's fine.
[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_05]: But I need you to watch this trailer.
[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_05]: So, John, what's your initial reaction to the Section 31?
[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_05]: And let's not call it a trailer. It's a teaser.
[00:03:46] [SPEAKER_05]: OK, it is a teaser.
[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_05]: There's a minute and a half minute. 40 seconds.
[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, there's a lot in it, but it's a teaser.
[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_06]: There is a yeah, there's a lot in it.
[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_06]: And I feel.
[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, it is confusing.
[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_06]: It's confusing to me.
[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm excited to see Michelle Yeo come back and man,
[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_06]: is this a quipier, jokier trailer than I ever would have expected.
[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_06]: But but I am reminding myself
[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_06]: that Star Wars has done something similar.
[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_06]: They took they made Rogue One.
[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_06]: They made a movie about not about, you know, the the Skywalker family.
[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_06]: This is going to be a movie not about the enterprise, not about the crew.
[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_06]: So I know it's a TV movie, but it's it's a movie.
[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_06]: And that, hey, that worked.
[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_06]: And we didn't see a lot of the clips that were in the trailer in the movie.
[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_06]: So I'm kind of hoping we don't see a lot of clips from this trailer in the movie.
[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_05]: Well, I think that's a good stance to take.
[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_05]: And on top of that, they released this at San Diego Comic Con, right?
[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Like they're looking for a broad appeal piece of editing work, right?
[00:04:57] [SPEAKER_05]: They're not looking to go.
[00:04:59] [SPEAKER_05]: Let's lock in the Trekkies, right?
[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Because they know the Trekkies are going to watch it.
[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_05]: They may not love it, but they're going to watch it like,
[00:05:07] [SPEAKER_05]: even if it's just to comment on it, you know, so I
[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_05]: it's hard. You know, the guys at It's Got Star Trek.
[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_05]: We're talking about how trailers these days are like
[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_05]: it's kind of been a lost art form, especially it is.
[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Especially now that Don LaFontaine isn't around to lend his voice to the trailers.
[00:05:25] [SPEAKER_06]: But like which, by the way, if you've never seen the
[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_06]: the Jerry Seinfeld trailer with Don LaFontaine
[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_06]: recording for the Jerry Seinfeld trailer, you need to go look that up.
[00:05:35] [SPEAKER_06]: It is a brilliant trailer.
[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_05]: It really is.
[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_05]: But it's their point is is accurate.
[00:05:41] [SPEAKER_05]: Like trailers now are not like,
[00:05:45] [SPEAKER_05]: oh, my gosh, I wonder what this movie is about with a few exceptions.
[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_05]: You know, I wonder what the rest of this story is.
[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_05]: I need to know what these characters do next. It's like
[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_05]: here's what this movie is like.
[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_05]: And if you like that kind of movie, you should see this movie.
[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_05]: And it's it's just different to how trailers were like when I was a kid.
[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_05]: And I'm sure when you were a kid, which isn't necessarily bad,
[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_05]: but it does change how I personally at least interact with trailers.
[00:06:15] [SPEAKER_05]: Right. Yeah.
[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't need to see trailers for most of the movies that I'm going to see,
[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_05]: because I I got excited when I heard who was making them.
[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Or I got excited when I heard who's in it. Right.
[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Like, I don't I don't really need a lot of trailers.
[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_05]: But this teaser, I mean, to your point, it's it's wacky.
[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Mm hmm. But like my initial thought to it was like, OK,
[00:06:40] [SPEAKER_05]: this is fun looking like they it seems like they decided
[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_05]: we want this to be fun.
[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_05]: And it's probably a valid complaint to say,
[00:06:49] [SPEAKER_05]: well, why are they using George Joe's character for something that's meant to be fun?
[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_05]: But I'm willing to wait to find that out.
[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, like, but but Empress George wasn't wasn't like always dour and serious.
[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, she wasn't, you know, mirror Lorca.
[00:07:04] [SPEAKER_06]: She she did did have, you know, she was teasing.
[00:07:08] [SPEAKER_06]: She did like to make fun of people. So right.
[00:07:10] [SPEAKER_06]: I can accept that.
[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_06]: I think it was just more like, wow.
[00:07:13] [SPEAKER_06]: But I like your point that it was for a comic con.
[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_06]: It wasn't a Star Trek invention.
[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_06]: It was for a comic con group. Right.
[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_06]: And if you don't know Star Trek,
[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_06]: you certainly don't know anything about Section 31. Right.
[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_05]: And so you saw Michelle Yeoh and and a Beyonce track.
[00:07:30] [SPEAKER_05]: And like, yep, that's going to hype a lot of people up
[00:07:33] [SPEAKER_05]: that don't know what this is.
[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_05]: So like completely understand.
[00:07:37] [SPEAKER_05]: I will say it does look like there is a
[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_05]: one of like the old school change link characters,
[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_05]: like the character played by Iman in Star Trek.
[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, yeah. Yeah, I think so.
[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_06]: Like we're getting those aliens.
[00:07:51] [SPEAKER_06]: Is that due to Borg or not?
[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_06]: Or is he just wearing like is it an exoskeleton?
[00:07:58] [SPEAKER_06]: Because he did.
[00:07:58] [SPEAKER_06]: He has a facial appliance on in one shot, but not in another shot.
[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_05]: And and then there's a shot where I think it's the same guy.
[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_05]: And it looks like he's wearing like a slimmed down power suit or something.
[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. And which reminds me of the Edge of Tomorrow or Live, Die, Repeat Power.
[00:08:15] [SPEAKER_06]: So I'm like, is Section 31 going to be getting involved
[00:08:18] [SPEAKER_06]: in the Edge of Tomorrow universe?
[00:08:19] [SPEAKER_06]: Because I'll take that movie again and again and again and again
[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_06]: again, which makes sense for that movie.
[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_05]: So literally anybody a helicopter blade is a sword.
[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_05]: And I'm here for your movie. I don't exactly. Exactly.
[00:08:31] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm a simple creature.
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm fully willing to admit that.
[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_05]: All right. Well, then, yes, let's go ahead and hear from our first caller,
[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_05]: because I don't want this to just be us.
[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_05]: I want it to be the whole audience.
[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_06]: Absolutely. And here is our good buddy, Trev.
[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Hey, it's Trev beaming in from Fairlutter Franchise,
[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_03]: the podcast devoted to failed movie franchise starters.
[00:08:51] [SPEAKER_03]: So I really hope I'm not going to be the bummer on this episode.
[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_03]: But you asked for our thoughts on the Star Trek Comic Con news this year.
[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_03]: And I have to admit, I found the whole thing kind of underwhelming.
[00:09:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Unfortunately, I did not share your optimism and excitement
[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_03]: for the season three clip from Strange New Worlds.
[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know. I kind of did fall in that camp that I felt like the whole thing
[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_03]: about, you know, behavior as a genetic trait to feel honestly borderline
[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_03]: racist and certainly not in the spirit of Trek.
[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_03]: And it really did feel like a misunderstanding of Vulcans
[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_03]: and how they learn to purge their emotions.
[00:09:23] [SPEAKER_03]: It's not an ingrained thing in their DNA.
[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_03]: So I'm hoping there's more to it.
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, I know it's just a clip and I do have faith
[00:09:29] [SPEAKER_03]: in this crew and the show.
[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm hoping there's more than we saw.
[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_03]: But that clip really did rub me kind of the wrong way. Section 31.
[00:09:35] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, I'm not a huge fan of how obsessed with Section 31
[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_03]: this current era of Trek is, and I wasn't a huge Discovery fan,
[00:09:42] [SPEAKER_03]: but I love Michelle Yeoh.
[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_03]: And I thought the idea of her headlining a Trek movie was really cool.
[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_03]: So I was kind of optimistic about it.
[00:09:47] [SPEAKER_03]: But the trailer really did have this cheap TV movie look to it
[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_03]: that really left me underwhelmed there as well.
[00:09:54] [SPEAKER_03]: The workplace comedy.
[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, I really like Tony Newsome.
[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I think it's an interesting idea.
[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_03]: I love that the Kurtzman era is trying to do all these different kinds
[00:10:00] [SPEAKER_03]: of Trek shows we wouldn't expect.
[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_03]: But I have to admit, it's not it's not an announcement
[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_03]: that got me really excited.
[00:10:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll wait and see on that one, but it wasn't super exciting for me.
[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_03]: And that's the thing.
[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I really think the one Trek show that all the fans released,
[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_03]: the majority of the fans are really waiting to hear about
[00:10:15] [SPEAKER_03]: and want to see get the green light is Star Trek Legacy.
[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_03]: And it really disappoints me that they are not doing so.
[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_03]: And they don't even talk about it.
[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_03]: There was no, you know, nobody was they weren't asked about it.
[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Nobody spoke of it at the panel.
[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_03]: And I thought that was really unfortunate.
[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_03]: And I know there's a lot of behind the scenes speculation
[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_03]: about why that show might not be happening.
[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I know Terra Matalas has gone off to Marvel to do the Vision show.
[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm really kind of worried that ship has sailed.
[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_03]: And I think that's the biggest bummer for me, as it seems to be the one thing
[00:10:41] [SPEAKER_03]: that most Trek fans want to hear about.
[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_03]: And for whatever reason, they don't seem to be moving forward with it.
[00:10:46] [SPEAKER_03]: So, yeah, ultimately, Starfleet Academy.
[00:10:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I love Paul Giamatti and Holly Hunter being there.
[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_03]: But ultimately, the whole thing was a little underwhelming for me.
[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_03]: But hey, I'm still a Trek fan.
[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not jumping ship, not abandoning a fandom, not abandoning this show.
[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_03]: So hopefully, like I said, I'm not the only bummer here
[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_03]: and hopefully all the other callers will found it more exciting than I did.
[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_05]: OK, two things here.
[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_05]: First of all, Trev, we are very happy to have you aboard.
[00:11:13] [SPEAKER_05]: And you are one of my favorite kinds of fans.
[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_05]: The people that I try to be like and often fail
[00:11:19] [SPEAKER_05]: where you look at a thing for what it is and not for,
[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_05]: you know, what you hope it's going to be.
[00:11:25] [SPEAKER_05]: That's really, really difficult for me to do.
[00:11:27] [SPEAKER_05]: And I'm working on it. OK?
[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_05]: But I think a lot of the fandom shares your opinion
[00:11:33] [SPEAKER_05]: on this strange new world season three clip.
[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes, these characters are coming across as a little bit racist.
[00:11:40] [SPEAKER_05]: And the reason that I am waiting for the context of this episode
[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_05]: to decide whether this is a swing and a miss
[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_05]: or if it's them trying to address that
[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_05]: is because we just don't know.
[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Like you said, it's just a clip.
[00:11:55] [SPEAKER_05]: We don't have the context of it.
[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_05]: I could very easily see them using this as a way
[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_05]: to have Spock be able to show the crew like,
[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_05]: look, this is not cool.
[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_05]: You can't reduce somebody to their
[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_05]: like biracial identity and then color everything they do with that.
[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_05]: But we don't know if that's what they're doing
[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_05]: or if they're just going to do a, you know, hey,
[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_05]: it's a funny Vulcan episode because we do those once a year.
[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Like so I'm really eager to see the rest of that episode
[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_05]: because I want to believe that the writers,
[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_05]: especially the folks that we've spoken to and the directors,
[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_05]: the folks that we've spoken to, understand
[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_05]: that they have a responsibility to be conscious of those things
[00:12:38] [SPEAKER_05]: when they're telling these stories.
[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_05]: The other part of me is like, we know Akiva Goldsman
[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_05]: and Henry Alonzo Myers are playing in a 1960s Star Trek sandbox
[00:12:48] [SPEAKER_05]: and they love to do that.
[00:12:51] [SPEAKER_05]: And like a huge part of 1960s Trek is Dr.
[00:12:55] [SPEAKER_05]: McCoy pretty much just being an open racist on the bridge
[00:12:59] [SPEAKER_05]: all the time to Spock.
[00:13:01] [SPEAKER_05]: Does that give it a pass? No.
[00:13:04] [SPEAKER_05]: But what I'm saying is I think I could see this
[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_05]: going either way for those two reasons, right?
[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Like a lot of the new crop of creatives understand
[00:13:12] [SPEAKER_05]: the responsibility and it seems like sometimes
[00:13:14] [SPEAKER_05]: the showrunners are more like,
[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_05]: I just want to play with my Star Trek toys
[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_05]: and I want it to feel like the Star Trek when I was growing up.
[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_05]: So I'm interested to see where that balance lands.
[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Other than that.
[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Man, you're not excited for a Tony Newsome live action
[00:13:30] [SPEAKER_05]: Star Trek comedy.
[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_05]: Did you not watch those old scientists?
[00:13:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Like, come on.
[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_06]: Let's let's not respond to everything.
[00:13:37] [SPEAKER_06]: We have other callers called about this stuff too, but no.
[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_05]: But yeah, the has a good considered opinion.
[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I think that's going to end up being divisive.
[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_05]: It has been divisive.
[00:13:47] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm excited to see what it is.
[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_05]: You know, when we see our first clip,
[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_05]: I think I'll know if I'm there for it or not.
[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, they gave a little bit of an overview, right?
[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, they sort of explained what they want it to be.
[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_05]: I believe it's two employees, I'm going to guess, on RISA.
[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_05]: Or something like it, yeah.
[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_05]: Who didn't know that they were being filmed
[00:14:07] [SPEAKER_05]: and suddenly discover that.
[00:14:10] [SPEAKER_05]: So it's the Trekman show.
[00:14:11] [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, yeah, to me, it sounds straight out of Lower Decks.
[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_05]: So I'm ready to love it.
[00:14:18] [SPEAKER_06]: You know? Yeah.
[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, it would definitely be something
[00:14:20] [SPEAKER_06]: the Lower Deckers would watch like on the on the Cerritos.
[00:14:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. And they have me as a fan to lose.
[00:14:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Like, I think that's generally where I come from is like,
[00:14:29] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm willing to give all of this a chance.
[00:14:32] [SPEAKER_05]: And if I don't come out beaming on the other end, that's fine.
[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Because as Trev also said, we're getting a ton of swings here.
[00:14:39] [SPEAKER_05]: The last thing I'll say for Trev's call is legacy.
[00:14:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Do we know if Mattalas pitched that show
[00:14:47] [SPEAKER_05]: or did he just like put in all these little pieces
[00:14:50] [SPEAKER_05]: and hope that the fans would demand to get made?
[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Do you know what I'm saying? Yeah.
[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_05]: Because if I feel like watching season three of Picard,
[00:14:58] [SPEAKER_05]: which I have plenty of my own complaints about
[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_05]: and they are available publicly, I just like.
[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_05]: I feel like Terry Mattalas was asking us all to do the work for him.
[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't know if he actually pitched the show is what I'm saying.
[00:15:13] [SPEAKER_05]: So I don't I don't either.
[00:15:14] [SPEAKER_05]: It might not be that Paramount said no, it might be that he didn't ask.
[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_05]: And the whole Paramount thing, again,
[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_05]: we were told no new shows are going to get greenlit right now
[00:15:23] [SPEAKER_05]: during the shopping period.
[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_05]: It could just be that all these other shows were in the pipeline already.
[00:15:28] [SPEAKER_05]: And once the money surrounding Paramount settles down,
[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_05]: maybe then Terry will have a chance to pitch legacy.
[00:15:35] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't know. Yeah.
[00:15:37] [SPEAKER_06]: But I mean, you know, Marvel is isn't a bad place to head right now.
[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_06]: For real, might be getting its second, you know,
[00:15:44] [SPEAKER_06]: second rejuvenation here after Deadpool and Wolverine.
[00:15:46] [SPEAKER_06]: So we'll just have to see.
[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, we did have a write in from our buddy, David Jones.
[00:15:52] [SPEAKER_06]: He said, Hey, everyone, hope everyone's doing well.
[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_06]: It was a great day of content announced for the Trek franchise.
[00:15:57] [SPEAKER_06]: Can't see what was filmed for seasons three of Strange New Worlds.
[00:16:01] [SPEAKER_06]: And I hope you all enjoy Section 31 when it comes out.
[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_06]: And I'm pretty sure David Jones is in Section 31. Yeah, absolutely.
[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_05]: We've been talking a little bit behind the scenes.
[00:16:13] [SPEAKER_05]: He hasn't shared anything special with me that nobody
[00:16:16] [SPEAKER_05]: that other people don't already know.
[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_05]: But yes, our friend David Jones is in Section 31.
[00:16:20] [SPEAKER_05]: I believe there was a screen cap where you can see him in the desert.
[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_05]: And I believe that that was not an AR wall, if I'm not mistaken.
[00:16:31] [SPEAKER_05]: So we will see when that comes out.
[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_05]: We're going to give that a big hell.
[00:16:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, David Jones, a hundred percent.
[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Just so cool to have somebody that's even close to Star Trek,
[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_05]: like that we count among our listeners and callers and friends.
[00:16:46] [SPEAKER_06]: So thank you, David. Yes, absolutely.
[00:16:50] [SPEAKER_06]: All right. Next up, we have Starfleet Academy.
[00:16:52] [SPEAKER_06]: We had a bunch of casting news about that.
[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, we had Tic Tartaro, Odette Fairbair, Weisman and Robert Picardo,
[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_06]: obviously announced for
[00:17:00] [SPEAKER_06]: popping in to join the cast of Starfleet Academy.
[00:17:03] [SPEAKER_06]: Some as regular, some as guest stars.
[00:17:05] [SPEAKER_06]: And then, of course, we had Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti.
[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, that's some big star power to to bring to the show.
[00:17:16] [SPEAKER_06]: And I mean, people have been asking for an Academy series
[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_06]: since I was a kid. Yeah.
[00:17:21] [SPEAKER_06]: Like I remember hearing like in the DS9 Voyager days, people are like,
[00:17:25] [SPEAKER_06]: oh, man, you know, it'd be cool to see like an Academy show.
[00:17:28] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm sure, you know, they're thinking more 90210 than
[00:17:31] [SPEAKER_06]: than what we're going to get.
[00:17:33] [SPEAKER_06]: But hey, you know, you might get the kids hanging out
[00:17:36] [SPEAKER_06]: at the SS Peach Pit and USS Peach Pit and jam it out to.
[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know.
[00:17:43] [SPEAKER_06]: I can't remember what music was on 90210, but
[00:17:46] [SPEAKER_06]: it was certainly early 90s. That's for sure.
[00:17:48] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I can't either because I was four.
[00:17:51] [SPEAKER_05]: But I mean, Holly Hunter,
[00:17:55] [SPEAKER_05]: you put Holly Hunter in basically anything.
[00:17:57] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm going to give it a good college try.
[00:17:59] [SPEAKER_05]: Like, I don't care what the premises.
[00:18:01] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't care what year it's set in.
[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm going to watch it right.
[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_05]: And yeah, Paul Giamatti like there's
[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_05]: on top of all the characters that we already love, of course,
[00:18:11] [SPEAKER_05]: the biggest surprise, I think, being that Robert Picardo is coming back
[00:18:14] [SPEAKER_05]: as the doctor and I'm I the thing that I'm most excited for
[00:18:19] [SPEAKER_05]: about Academy is that it is not Kirk and Spock at the Academy.
[00:18:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I know a lot of people wanted that show and I'm
[00:18:28] [SPEAKER_05]: kind of the mindset that like, look,
[00:18:31] [SPEAKER_05]: you don't got to explain every moment of their entire life leading up.
[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_05]: No, to what we know, you know, like that was kind of my main problem,
[00:18:39] [SPEAKER_05]: for example, with Furiosa.
[00:18:41] [SPEAKER_05]: It was gorgeous to look at.
[00:18:44] [SPEAKER_05]: And I loved being back in that world.
[00:18:46] [SPEAKER_05]: But I didn't need like step by step explanation.
[00:18:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Everything that happened in the history of the Fury Road continuity.
[00:18:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Right. Like, hmm.
[00:18:56] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, some of what was so fun about Fury Road was that it was just there
[00:19:00] [SPEAKER_05]: and you could intuit all of that stuff by watching Fury Road.
[00:19:05] [SPEAKER_05]: Like, so I'm I'm really excited for the Academy show to be set
[00:19:10] [SPEAKER_05]: in this discovery future where we don't have a set timeline of events
[00:19:14] [SPEAKER_05]: and we don't necessarily have character canon constraints
[00:19:18] [SPEAKER_05]: that we have to work around.
[00:19:20] [SPEAKER_05]: I think this is the best possible place they could have set the Academy show.
[00:19:25] [SPEAKER_06]: Absolutely. And we have another caller here, Melanie, to talk about that some more.
[00:19:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Hi, guys. Here's Melanie.
[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_00]: You asked about reactions concerning all the track news.
[00:19:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Guys, what do you want me to say?
[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_00]: It's great that there will be many new projects.
[00:19:38] [SPEAKER_00]: The more Star Trek, the better.
[00:19:40] [SPEAKER_00]: But let's start with section 31.
[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Michel Lio, the Oscar winner in a track movie on streaming.
[00:19:46] [SPEAKER_00]: So cool. Even if the trailer seems loud, chaotic, filled with action and stuff,
[00:19:50] [SPEAKER_00]: it's only a trailer.
[00:19:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Who knows what it will be like in the end?
[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm looking forward to it.
[00:19:54] [SPEAKER_00]: Academy guest stars? Tilly!
[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Where can I sign up for a staff at Academy?
[00:19:59] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll probably be one of the oldest recruits, but I will make it through.
[00:20:02] [SPEAKER_00]: I swear. All I want to be is the best pilot like what she says.
[00:20:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Live action Star Trek comedy?
[00:20:08] [SPEAKER_00]: OK, let's see what this will be like.
[00:20:09] [SPEAKER_00]: But again, why not?
[00:20:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Sounds funny and we all could use a lot more now and then.
[00:20:14] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm honestly game for everything.
[00:20:16] [SPEAKER_00]: All I hope for is that Strange New Worlds will get many,
[00:20:19] [SPEAKER_00]: many seasons with Captain Pike in the chair.
[00:20:21] [SPEAKER_00]: And concerning the Strange New Worlds trailer?
[00:20:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, please don't hate me now.
[00:20:25] [SPEAKER_00]: But I loved it so much.
[00:20:27] [SPEAKER_00]: I know you picked it up proud and some are very unhappy with it,
[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_00]: to put it mildly. I get you.
[00:20:31] [SPEAKER_00]: I really do.
[00:20:32] [SPEAKER_00]: But honestly, it's only a trailer.
[00:20:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Again, we don't know the full episode yet.
[00:20:37] [SPEAKER_00]: So, action's here.
[00:20:38] [SPEAKER_00]: I loved it.
[00:20:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Working close on the swing of the Leopold?
[00:20:41] [SPEAKER_00]: I loved it.
[00:20:42] [SPEAKER_00]: And I think there will be an explanation.
[00:20:44] [SPEAKER_00]: And if not, perhaps I won't love it as much this time next year.
[00:20:47] [SPEAKER_00]: But we'll see.
[00:20:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Thanks, guys.
[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Live long and prosper and take care.
[00:20:52] [SPEAKER_06]: Excellent approach to New Trek.
[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes, and I got to say, John, when we first started Open Pike Night,
[00:20:58] [SPEAKER_05]: I think in one of the first few episodes you said,
[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_05]: hey, even if you hate Strange New Worlds, we want you to call in.
[00:21:03] [SPEAKER_05]: And that remains true, right?
[00:21:06] [SPEAKER_05]: Like we don't...
[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_05]: We're not looking for haters, right?
[00:21:10] [SPEAKER_05]: We're looking for people with well-considered opinions.
[00:21:13] [SPEAKER_05]: And hey, yeah, critiques are great.
[00:21:15] [SPEAKER_05]: That's like the core of the Trek fandom.
[00:21:18] [SPEAKER_05]: We nitpick stuff, we pull it apart.
[00:21:21] [SPEAKER_05]: We point out the parts where we think Trek failed us.
[00:21:24] [SPEAKER_05]: And I'm excited that we have a differing of opinions
[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_05]: about all of this content that's coming down the pike
[00:21:32] [SPEAKER_05]: because it shows that, you know, like any fandom,
[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_05]: the Star Trek fandom is not a monolith.
[00:21:38] [SPEAKER_05]: There's not one prevailing opinion.
[00:21:40] [SPEAKER_05]: Even like Trev was saying, like a lot of people want Star Trek legacy.
[00:21:44] [SPEAKER_05]: But even that has its folks who are like, I'm OK without it.
[00:21:48] [SPEAKER_05]: Like, so there's there's such a diverse array of opinions here.
[00:21:54] [SPEAKER_05]: And I'm really glad that we get to be a sounding board for those.
[00:21:59] [SPEAKER_05]: And I'm really glad that people feel comfortable enough here
[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_05]: to disagree with each other on small things, big things,
[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_05]: all that kind of thing, because like Melanie was saying,
[00:22:09] [SPEAKER_05]: we're going to give it a shot, right?
[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. And that's the thing, like everybody who calls and says like,
[00:22:15] [SPEAKER_06]: they're going to watch it, they're still going to watch it.
[00:22:18] [SPEAKER_06]: And we're going to talk about it.
[00:22:19] [SPEAKER_06]: If they didn't care, they wouldn't watch them.
[00:22:21] [SPEAKER_06]: They wouldn't call. So yeah. Yeah.
[00:22:24] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, or maybe they wouldn't show up to record the episode.
[00:22:27] [SPEAKER_06]: Let's see who this next caller is. Oh, my God.
[00:22:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Hey, everybody, it's Cameron here.
[00:22:32] [SPEAKER_04]: And I am sorry I couldn't make it to this discussion,
[00:22:35] [SPEAKER_04]: though, honestly, I don't have a lot of hot takes
[00:22:38] [SPEAKER_04]: about this bunch of Trek news.
[00:22:40] [SPEAKER_04]: So I just came here to say one thing.
[00:22:43] [SPEAKER_04]: Paul, OMG, Amadi, I am here for this.
[00:22:46] [SPEAKER_04]: The Trek universe is getting such cool actors, of course.
[00:22:50] [SPEAKER_04]: Tig Notaro coming back is amazing, Holly Hunter.
[00:22:54] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, I mean, Paul, G, Amadi, this this is going to be fantastic.
[00:22:57] [SPEAKER_04]: All right. One other thing I'll say is
[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_04]: having said that, I also would have just taken the entire cast
[00:23:04] [SPEAKER_04]: of Sky High and put them into Starfleet Academy
[00:23:08] [SPEAKER_04]: and just having those teachers teach the next slate
[00:23:12] [SPEAKER_04]: of Starfleet cadets would have been amazing.
[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_04]: We would have had some kids in the hall.
[00:23:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Some broken lizards.
[00:23:17] [SPEAKER_04]: And of course, grouchy Bruce Campbell teaching Starfleet dodgeball that
[00:23:23] [SPEAKER_04]: that that. Yeah.
[00:23:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I also would have accepted that 100 percent.
[00:23:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Discuss. I'm glad that can clarify because I was like, what is Sky High?
[00:23:32] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, Sky High was a superhero high school movie,
[00:23:36] [SPEAKER_06]: which if you want to see any of the cast of that in a great sci-fi
[00:23:40] [SPEAKER_06]: space show, you can see the actor Stephen Strait,
[00:23:43] [SPEAKER_06]: who played war and peace in The Expanse as the main character,
[00:23:46] [SPEAKER_06]: James Holden. Check out The Expanse.
[00:23:49] [SPEAKER_06]: I never saw Sky High.
[00:23:51] [SPEAKER_06]: I just know that he was in that. Yeah.
[00:23:54] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't I don't know if I trust Cam's taste here again, though, John,
[00:23:57] [SPEAKER_05]: because I saw him on Twitter this weekend saying
[00:24:00] [SPEAKER_05]: he doesn't like Tron and is not excited for the Trent
[00:24:04] [SPEAKER_05]: Reznor score for Tron three.
[00:24:06] [SPEAKER_05]: Are you kidding me, Cameron?
[00:24:07] [SPEAKER_05]: What? Yeah.
[00:24:09] [SPEAKER_06]: And he's really he's always been kind of down on like techno music
[00:24:12] [SPEAKER_06]: and Reznor and, you know, Gary, what's his butt who inspired him?
[00:24:17] [SPEAKER_06]: Like, yeah, just he's always just been kind of like a bubblegum pop type guy.
[00:24:22] [SPEAKER_05]: So seriously. Yeah.
[00:24:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Which is fine. I just you know, I can't I can't quite get on that level, Cameron.
[00:24:27] [SPEAKER_06]: But he did. Yeah.
[00:24:28] [SPEAKER_06]: He was saying rollerball is better than Tron, right?
[00:24:31] [SPEAKER_06]: The guy has some out there opinions.
[00:24:34] [SPEAKER_05]: OK, let's just let's leave it at that.
[00:24:36] [SPEAKER_05]: But I am glad to hear your voice, Cameron.
[00:24:39] [SPEAKER_05]: I think this might be the first time I've ever heard Cameron as just a caller.
[00:24:42] [SPEAKER_05]: And I don't mean like just a caller, right? Right. Right.
[00:24:45] [SPEAKER_05]: As not sitting across from me in the very exclusive
[00:24:49] [SPEAKER_05]: Zoom style meeting that is the open Pike Night recording studio
[00:24:53] [SPEAKER_05]: spanning an entire country.
[00:24:56] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. Yeah, we are thousands of miles apart, aren't we?
[00:24:59] [SPEAKER_06]: Man. But yeah, I mean, Paul Giamatti, I do hope
[00:25:03] [SPEAKER_06]: I hope with Giamatti being cast that they do at least one
[00:25:07] [SPEAKER_06]: holiday episode of Academy that's just the Holdovers,
[00:25:12] [SPEAKER_06]: but in Starfleet Academy.
[00:25:14] [SPEAKER_06]: And he's like for some reason his eye is all wonky in that one episode.
[00:25:17] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, if you haven't seen The Holdovers, it's a fantastic movie,
[00:25:21] [SPEAKER_06]: fantastic Christmas movie.
[00:25:23] [SPEAKER_06]: And yeah, Giamatti is amazing in it.
[00:25:26] [SPEAKER_05]: I think the people from my generation are hoping that he gets covered
[00:25:29] [SPEAKER_05]: in blue paint at some point.
[00:25:33] [SPEAKER_05]: Maybe a blank check, maybe some kind of that bullion joke.
[00:25:37] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't I don't I honestly don't know, John.
[00:25:39] [SPEAKER_05]: I just saw a lot of people make jokes about him being blue.
[00:25:42] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, it might be Agent Cody Banks.
[00:25:45] [SPEAKER_06]: No, it's big something.
[00:25:48] [SPEAKER_06]: Frankie Muniz.
[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I thought it was Frankie. Frankie Muniz.
[00:25:52] [SPEAKER_05]: That's Agent Cody Banks, man. Is it?
[00:25:55] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, from what my pop culture
[00:25:57] [SPEAKER_05]: head is telling me, I haven't seen that movie, but I
[00:26:01] [SPEAKER_05]: I seem to remember it being a big deal for a while.
[00:26:05] [SPEAKER_06]: I think it's too big.
[00:26:07] [SPEAKER_06]: Big fat liar.
[00:26:09] [SPEAKER_06]: Big fat liar was the movie where he gets covered in blue paint.
[00:26:11] [SPEAKER_06]: OK, but yes, Frankie Muniz is also in that, I believe.
[00:26:16] [SPEAKER_05]: So yeah. Point being my my Paul Giamatti,
[00:26:20] [SPEAKER_05]: you know, like knowledge is lower than than I think Cameron's is.
[00:26:26] [SPEAKER_05]: But I do like Paul Giamatti and everything I've ever seen him in.
[00:26:29] [SPEAKER_05]: So I'm I'm very much looking forward to it.
[00:26:31] [SPEAKER_05]: And let me reiterate, Holly freaking Hunter.
[00:26:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Holly freaking Hunter, man.
[00:26:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, seriously.
[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, it's going to be amazing.
[00:26:41] [SPEAKER_06]: She made Batman versus Superman better.
[00:26:43] [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, that is an achievement right there.
[00:26:45] [SPEAKER_05]: Did she has like four minutes of screen time in Oh Brother,
[00:26:49] [SPEAKER_05]: Where Art Thou?
[00:26:49] [SPEAKER_05]: And she is one of the best characters in the movie.
[00:26:53] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. All right.
[00:26:58] [SPEAKER_06]: And then, of course, we have we got the strange new world season
[00:27:00] [SPEAKER_06]: three clip, which we have covered here.
[00:27:02] [SPEAKER_06]: We did an exclusive little little episode, a couple of episodes back
[00:27:07] [SPEAKER_06]: talking about the strange new world season three clip.
[00:27:10] [SPEAKER_06]: But like like people have said in their calls, like it's a divisive clip.
[00:27:14] [SPEAKER_06]: And we definitely recommend you go back and listen to our episode on that.
[00:27:19] [SPEAKER_06]: And like Cam said,
[00:27:22] [SPEAKER_06]: it's the first and only new strange new worlds content
[00:27:25] [SPEAKER_06]: we've gotten in over a year and will get for almost another year.
[00:27:29] [SPEAKER_06]: So we'll take it. We will take it.
[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_06]: And we will talk about it.
[00:27:34] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes, we will to death.
[00:27:38] [SPEAKER_06]: But we do have another caller, our good buddy, Zo.
[00:27:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Open Pike Night.
[00:27:44] [SPEAKER_01]: This is the USS Cinema, Zo Richardson, Captain Commanding,
[00:27:47] [SPEAKER_01]: also host of Backlick Cinema, the podcast.
[00:27:50] [SPEAKER_01]: So there are a lot of things to be excited about, about this new,
[00:27:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I guess, era or season of Star Trek that's about to be laid upon us.
[00:28:00] [SPEAKER_01]: So it's kind of a bittersweet because I'm really sad
[00:28:05] [SPEAKER_01]: for the last season of Lord Dex is one of my favorite shows.
[00:28:09] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm really sad to see it go.
[00:28:11] [SPEAKER_01]: I can't wait to see what they have for their final season.
[00:28:14] [SPEAKER_01]: But I just kind of wish that it wasn't.
[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_01]: I realize that there is a live action comedy show that they're going to
[00:28:22] [SPEAKER_01]: pull out, I guess, in a coming couple of years.
[00:28:25] [SPEAKER_01]: But I really wish that we didn't have to lose Lord Dex.
[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_01]: But on the other hand, I am obviously excited about
[00:28:33] [SPEAKER_01]: the new season of Strange New Worlds and they're going to have
[00:28:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Cillian O'Sullivan as Dr.
[00:28:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Corby. I was curious if they was going to have Dr.
[00:28:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Corby show up in Strange New Worlds.
[00:28:45] [SPEAKER_01]: And it looks like they're going to do it.
[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_01]: He looks like, well, Cillian, the actor, looks a little young to play
[00:28:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Dr. Corby. We'll see how that plays out.
[00:28:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm also excited about the Section 31 TV movie.
[00:28:57] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm very interested in Starfleet Academy with Holly Hunter stepping in.
[00:29:04] [SPEAKER_01]: She's going to be stepping her toe in the Star Trek universe.
[00:29:07] [SPEAKER_01]: And it looks like we're going to get Paul D'Amani as a Klingon adversary.
[00:29:11] [SPEAKER_01]: We'll see what happens.
[00:29:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Richardson out.
[00:29:14] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, Richardson, it's good to hear you got your ship working again,
[00:29:17] [SPEAKER_06]: because I remember last time didn't the ship break down
[00:29:20] [SPEAKER_06]: and his crew was helping him work on it?
[00:29:23] [SPEAKER_05]: It was. And as always,
[00:29:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Zoe brings not only the production value, but the great
[00:29:29] [SPEAKER_05]: thoughts and questions about what we are talking about.
[00:29:32] [SPEAKER_05]: I have to agree 100 percent on Lower Decks.
[00:29:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Like, John, I'll admit the first time that you talked about the
[00:29:41] [SPEAKER_05]: protector friend and guide trailer, I was like,
[00:29:44] [SPEAKER_05]: I didn't see that trailer because it did.
[00:29:47] [SPEAKER_05]: It was before I was born. But I believe you.
[00:29:50] [SPEAKER_05]: I fully believe that it was meaningful.
[00:29:52] [SPEAKER_05]: And then they did the same thing with the Lower Decks.
[00:29:55] [SPEAKER_05]: Same thing with Lower Decks.
[00:29:57] [SPEAKER_05]: And I was like, oh, wow.
[00:29:59] [SPEAKER_05]: OK, this is affecting me emotionally.
[00:30:01] [SPEAKER_05]: I can only imagine what it must have felt like with the actual
[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_05]: original series crew.
[00:30:07] [SPEAKER_05]: And it works.
[00:30:08] [SPEAKER_05]: And like going back to what we're talking about earlier,
[00:30:11] [SPEAKER_05]: this is how you do a trailer.
[00:30:12] [SPEAKER_05]: This is how you do a teaser.
[00:30:14] [SPEAKER_05]: You get somebody with a deep voice to give gravitas
[00:30:16] [SPEAKER_05]: to a thing, whether it needs it or not.
[00:30:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Like, I am very excited for this season of Lower Decks.
[00:30:23] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm definitely bummed that it is going to be the last season.
[00:30:27] [SPEAKER_05]: And a big part of that for me is that.
[00:30:30] [SPEAKER_05]: Lower Decks felt like the stalwart, right?
[00:30:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Like, OK, whatever happens, there's going to be another Lower Decks next year.
[00:30:37] [SPEAKER_05]: So that's great.
[00:30:39] [SPEAKER_05]: And, you know, we're not going to wait 18 months
[00:30:42] [SPEAKER_05]: between seasons or two years between seasons.
[00:30:45] [SPEAKER_05]: It's going to be out next year and it's going to be awesome.
[00:30:47] [SPEAKER_05]: It'll be a good summer thing.
[00:30:49] [SPEAKER_05]: And now that's going away.
[00:30:51] [SPEAKER_05]: And it's like, man, the wait between Trek series is going to get longer.
[00:30:55] [SPEAKER_05]: And yes, we were spoiled with having what?
[00:30:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Five Trek shows on TV simultaneously.
[00:31:01] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. Like, yes, we were spoiled.
[00:31:03] [SPEAKER_06]: And I'm come Christmas Day.
[00:31:05] [SPEAKER_06]: There will only be strange new worlds.
[00:31:07] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. So I'm I'm bumming on that.
[00:31:11] [SPEAKER_05]: But I'm really excited to see what Lower Decks has put together.
[00:31:14] [SPEAKER_05]: It sounds like the team knew
[00:31:16] [SPEAKER_05]: far enough in advance that this was going to be their last season.
[00:31:21] [SPEAKER_05]: That they were able to incorporate that into their storytelling,
[00:31:26] [SPEAKER_05]: which Discovery also did.
[00:31:27] [SPEAKER_05]: But they found out like after they had finished it.
[00:31:30] [SPEAKER_05]: So it I mean, not in a bad way, but it was definitely tacked on.
[00:31:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Right. Like, oh, yeah, they were told here's some money.
[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Go shoot some scenes, do whatever you need to do.
[00:31:40] [SPEAKER_05]: And I think they did a good job with those scenes.
[00:31:42] [SPEAKER_05]: But I you can tell where they got added.
[00:31:44] [SPEAKER_05]: So I'm interested to see what a Trek show that's
[00:31:48] [SPEAKER_05]: that knows that its ending looks like.
[00:31:50] [SPEAKER_05]: And, you know, not in the way that season seven of TNG works out.
[00:31:56] [SPEAKER_05]: Like I I will go on record and say TNG
[00:32:00] [SPEAKER_05]: might have the best TV series finale of like, man, any show.
[00:32:06] [SPEAKER_05]: It's a good finale.
[00:32:07] [SPEAKER_05]: It's got to be top 10 at least.
[00:32:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Like it's just really well done.
[00:32:12] [SPEAKER_05]: So I'm interested to see what Lower Decks does.
[00:32:15] [SPEAKER_05]: I got to imagine there's going to be some callbacks to that.
[00:32:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Probably it looks like they're going to be calling back
[00:32:20] [SPEAKER_05]: to Enterprise with a couple of scenes like all kinds of stuff.
[00:32:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, they they know their trek.
[00:32:25] [SPEAKER_05]: And I am also deeply bummed to see that go.
[00:32:29] [SPEAKER_05]: But again, it's not like Tony Newsom is going anywhere in the world of Star Trek.
[00:32:34] [SPEAKER_05]: And I think we are incredibly lucky as fans for that at least.
[00:32:39] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. And it is, you know, like you said, this next
[00:32:43] [SPEAKER_06]: we know we are kind of going into new Trek phase two now.
[00:32:47] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, it's it feels like a little bit of this.
[00:32:51] [SPEAKER_06]: This really is with the ending, you know, with the shedding of prodigy,
[00:32:56] [SPEAKER_06]: the ending of Lower Decks, Picard and Discovery in the rear view mirror.
[00:33:00] [SPEAKER_06]: It's like, yeah, this is kind of that transition
[00:33:02] [SPEAKER_06]: into a new phase of this current era.
[00:33:07] [SPEAKER_06]: And which is how we have to look at all major media nowadays
[00:33:11] [SPEAKER_06]: is what phase are we in?
[00:33:13] [SPEAKER_06]: And it is it's going to be, I mean, watching that last season
[00:33:16] [SPEAKER_06]: and especially the last episode, I'm sure going to be pretty emotional
[00:33:19] [SPEAKER_06]: for the comedy animated Star Trek show that everybody five years ago
[00:33:24] [SPEAKER_06]: was like a comedy animated Star Trek show and which personally, I think
[00:33:29] [SPEAKER_06]: some of you know, there's definitely one episode
[00:33:31] [SPEAKER_06]: that's in my top five of all nine hundred Star Trek episodes.
[00:33:35] [SPEAKER_06]: One of those is a lower decks episode.
[00:33:37] [SPEAKER_06]: What is Douj is almost a perfect.
[00:33:40] [SPEAKER_06]: It's like it's a perfect episode, I think. Yeah.
[00:33:43] [SPEAKER_06]: And so, yeah, it's going to be
[00:33:45] [SPEAKER_06]: it's going to be bittersweet for sure.
[00:33:48] [SPEAKER_06]: But man, talk about a show that has fired on all cylinders
[00:33:54] [SPEAKER_06]: every season and.
[00:33:57] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, maybe not entirely perfect every time, but
[00:34:02] [SPEAKER_06]: any missteps are very few, far between and hard to see,
[00:34:05] [SPEAKER_06]: especially once you look at the the crossover from Strange New World's
[00:34:09] [SPEAKER_06]: also just tearing our hearts out. So
[00:34:13] [SPEAKER_06]: it'll be it'll be sad to see it go, but
[00:34:15] [SPEAKER_06]: man, what a like what what they're leaving behind is fantastic.
[00:34:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. And like I think a big thing for me that covers up any like
[00:34:23] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't know if I would even call them blemishes, but like moments
[00:34:26] [SPEAKER_05]: in lower decks where I wasn't like super engaged with the story,
[00:34:30] [SPEAKER_05]: still laughing my ass off.
[00:34:33] [SPEAKER_05]: Like felt absolutely catered to, you know, and I'm
[00:34:36] [SPEAKER_05]: sad to see that go. But like like with Metallus and The Vision Show,
[00:34:42] [SPEAKER_05]: Star Trek is getting people jobs.
[00:34:44] [SPEAKER_05]: Mike McMahon is working on a freaking adaptation of Golden Axe,
[00:34:49] [SPEAKER_05]: the arcade game like I don't have any idea
[00:34:54] [SPEAKER_05]: how to feel about that other than excited. Right. Because that's gonna be fun.
[00:34:57] [SPEAKER_05]: I implicitly trust Mike McMahon because I have loved lower
[00:35:01] [SPEAKER_05]: decks all the way through.
[00:35:03] [SPEAKER_05]: And last thing I'll say, though, this actor that they got to play
[00:35:06] [SPEAKER_05]: Dr. Roger Corby, I saw a side by side of him with the
[00:35:10] [SPEAKER_05]: the original actor, Michael Strong, and like
[00:35:14] [SPEAKER_05]: I think they have nailed it yet again in their casting,
[00:35:18] [SPEAKER_05]: just based purely on looks. Right.
[00:35:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Like I'm sure the guy can act, but I'll have to wait to see that part of it.
[00:35:24] [SPEAKER_05]: So right now I'm just going to be optimistic.
[00:35:30] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. And I mean, that brings us to our last call.
[00:35:35] [SPEAKER_06]: Our good and dear friend, Marcy.
[00:35:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Hey, Open Pike Night. It's Marcy from Idol Ride.
[00:35:41] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm really excited to talk about the new news.
[00:35:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's get started with the strange new worlds clip,
[00:35:47] [SPEAKER_02]: which basically has the entire crew turning into Vulcans.
[00:35:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, please. Love it.
[00:35:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Can't get enough of it.
[00:35:54] [SPEAKER_02]: And then let's move on to section 31 trailer.
[00:35:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Does Sam Richardson have some yellow fucking eyes?
[00:36:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Is he like my new data?
[00:36:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Is he my new funny data with emotions for section 31?
[00:36:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Also, Michelle Yeoh.
[00:36:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, can't miss it.
[00:36:07] [SPEAKER_02]: She's number one in my heart and my eyes.
[00:36:10] [SPEAKER_02]: And everything about Star Trek is embodied in Michelle Yeoh and Giorgio.
[00:36:15] [SPEAKER_02]: We also have the announcement of a new live action show.
[00:36:18] [SPEAKER_02]: That's a comedy series.
[00:36:20] [SPEAKER_02]: I think this is a good idea.
[00:36:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Lord Dex was amazing.
[00:36:23] [SPEAKER_02]: So I'm hopeful that the new live action,
[00:36:27] [SPEAKER_02]: potentially it sounds like reality show in the future.
[00:36:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Sounds fucking amazing.
[00:36:33] [SPEAKER_02]: And then finally, Starfleet Academy casting.
[00:36:37] [SPEAKER_02]: All I have to say is Holly Hunter.
[00:36:39] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, come on. She's amazing.
[00:36:41] [SPEAKER_02]: She's quirky.
[00:36:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Everything about all this news is just filling me with joy.
[00:36:47] [SPEAKER_02]: All right. Thanks. Bye.
[00:36:49] [SPEAKER_06]: Always so good to hear from Marcy.
[00:36:51] [SPEAKER_06]: Really, it is always always.
[00:36:53] [SPEAKER_06]: And again, if if you haven't listened to Green Shirt,
[00:36:57] [SPEAKER_06]: early seasons of Green Shirt, check out Idol Ride, her podcast right now.
[00:37:00] [SPEAKER_06]: She's covering a fallout series, including video games.
[00:37:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Trev's show, failure to franchise.
[00:37:07] [SPEAKER_06]: I am loving and Trev, you know, he may have been critical of some of the stuff,
[00:37:11] [SPEAKER_06]: but that's because he loves Star Trek.
[00:37:12] [SPEAKER_06]: And you'll know it because he shoe horns in
[00:37:15] [SPEAKER_06]: the smallest chance he gets.
[00:37:18] [SPEAKER_06]: He will mention that someone or some something has to do with Star Trek,
[00:37:22] [SPEAKER_06]: no matter what movie they're talking about on there.
[00:37:25] [SPEAKER_06]: And so with Back Look Cinema, I mean, we have had some great
[00:37:29] [SPEAKER_06]: fellow podcasters calling in tonight, and we appreciate each one of them.
[00:37:33] [SPEAKER_05]: We really have. And like you guys know me.
[00:37:36] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm on record as having never seen Avatar, the last Airbender.
[00:37:41] [SPEAKER_05]: I also did not watch the live action version, but guess what?
[00:37:44] [SPEAKER_05]: I listened to every single Idol Ride episode covering it
[00:37:49] [SPEAKER_05]: because I knew it would come from a place of love
[00:37:51] [SPEAKER_05]: and a place of hopeless dedication to the source material that I
[00:37:56] [SPEAKER_05]: I just can't get over.
[00:37:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Like, that's why we listen to podcasts, right?
[00:38:00] [SPEAKER_05]: We want to hear people
[00:38:02] [SPEAKER_05]: talk about the things that they love.
[00:38:03] [SPEAKER_05]: And I think honestly, for me, that's probably why you don't hear
[00:38:07] [SPEAKER_05]: a ton of criticisms out of me on a lot of Star Trek stuff, because it's like
[00:38:11] [SPEAKER_05]: you can get that anywhere.
[00:38:13] [SPEAKER_05]: Like you can go online and see that you can listen to 100 shows
[00:38:16] [SPEAKER_05]: and hear the same criticisms over and over.
[00:38:19] [SPEAKER_05]: And it's not that there's no place for that.
[00:38:21] [SPEAKER_05]: It's just that I am here to be happy about the things that I like.
[00:38:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Right. Like I'm not disregarding
[00:38:29] [SPEAKER_05]: problematic elements of the show or shows or movies or series
[00:38:34] [SPEAKER_05]: or anything like that, because it's all part and parcel of consuming art.
[00:38:39] [SPEAKER_05]: But I just I don't tend to give a lot of air to it,
[00:38:43] [SPEAKER_05]: mostly because I don't want to bump myself out.
[00:38:44] [SPEAKER_05]: I just want to be having fun with Star Trek.
[00:38:47] [SPEAKER_05]: And Star Trek is definitely like an escape for me. Right.
[00:38:51] [SPEAKER_06]: It is. It's I mean, if we you know, I have
[00:38:54] [SPEAKER_06]: I have looked at it as somebody in, you know, the elder
[00:38:57] [SPEAKER_06]: and the elder millennial group in somebody in my early 40s, like, yeah.
[00:39:01] [SPEAKER_06]: You know what? There's stuff I watched as a kid that nowadays is like, no,
[00:39:05] [SPEAKER_06]: this would never get aired.
[00:39:06] [SPEAKER_06]: But I do still enjoy it. And it's like, look, I get it.
[00:39:09] [SPEAKER_06]: I understand. I acknowledge.
[00:39:11] [SPEAKER_06]: But I also, you know,
[00:39:15] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm not going to hate or disgruntle myself into a corner
[00:39:19] [SPEAKER_06]: of not being able to be entertained by anything. Yeah.
[00:39:23] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, but also I've criticized Stranger New Worlds.
[00:39:25] [SPEAKER_06]: I criticize an episode where we didn't talk to the writer about it.
[00:39:28] [SPEAKER_06]: And I was like, oh,
[00:39:31] [SPEAKER_06]: what did I say about that episode?
[00:39:33] [SPEAKER_06]: It was like, you know, that wasn't, you know, they're not all perfect.
[00:39:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Well, and thankfully, they get it.
[00:39:39] [SPEAKER_05]: Like the people making art get it.
[00:39:41] [SPEAKER_05]: They know, like they can only get through so much of their own vision
[00:39:45] [SPEAKER_05]: into this thing.
[00:39:46] [SPEAKER_05]: And like David Reed was saying, a big part of writing on a show
[00:39:49] [SPEAKER_05]: is emulating the showrunner's style.
[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_05]: You want it to sound like them. Right. That's part of your job.
[00:39:53] [SPEAKER_05]: So, you know, like I said, fully here for criticism.
[00:39:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Happy to talk critiques with folks.
[00:40:00] [SPEAKER_05]: What I cannot get behind is like these showrunners suck.
[00:40:05] [SPEAKER_05]: These showrunners are idiots.
[00:40:06] [SPEAKER_05]: These they don't understand this. Yeah.
[00:40:08] [SPEAKER_05]: It's like they do.
[00:40:10] [SPEAKER_05]: They're making a conscious choice to either disregard that.
[00:40:14] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah. Like there's there's a lot of decisions happening
[00:40:17] [SPEAKER_05]: and you're not going to agree with every decision.
[00:40:19] [SPEAKER_05]: And neither am I.
[00:40:20] [SPEAKER_05]: And that's the beautiful thing about Open Pike Night
[00:40:23] [SPEAKER_05]: is we all get to share our voices and our opinions on that.
[00:40:26] [SPEAKER_05]: So, yes, if you want to talk criticisms, we can do that.
[00:40:30] [SPEAKER_05]: I am very excited to see what people think about all this upcoming Star Trek,
[00:40:35] [SPEAKER_05]: even the stuff that they don't like.
[00:40:37] [SPEAKER_05]: So if you if you're feeling, you know, out there going, well,
[00:40:40] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't want to call in because I feel like I might be a bummer.
[00:40:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Just toss that. Toss that man.
[00:40:45] [SPEAKER_05]: We're ready to hear from you.
[00:40:47] [SPEAKER_05]: We want to know why you feel that way.
[00:40:49] [SPEAKER_05]: We want to know what it is that you do love about Star Trek
[00:40:52] [SPEAKER_05]: and what's keeping you from loving the things that you love
[00:40:54] [SPEAKER_05]: as fully as you possibly can.
[00:40:57] [SPEAKER_05]: That's kind of important to us.
[00:40:59] [SPEAKER_06]: Absolutely.
[00:41:00] [SPEAKER_06]: And we can, you know, offer suggestions on how to get over it
[00:41:04] [SPEAKER_06]: or just be like, yep, I get it, man. There's sometimes it's hard
[00:41:09] [SPEAKER_06]: when things change all the time, when there are 900 episodes or something.
[00:41:12] [SPEAKER_06]: It would be insane if you loved every single one.
[00:41:15] [SPEAKER_06]: It really would.
[00:41:16] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, you you might want to like form some opinions, man.
[00:41:20] [SPEAKER_06]: You got to hate somebody.
[00:41:22] [SPEAKER_06]: You got to stop be like Bobby Blue. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:41:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Bobby Blue. But
[00:41:31] [SPEAKER_05]: she likes it.
[00:41:32] [SPEAKER_05]: She just can't bring herself to objectively rate anything.
[00:41:36] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes. Yeah. Which I love about Bobby, by the way.
[00:41:39] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. I'll give a little teaser.
[00:41:40] [SPEAKER_06]: There's an episode of Green Shirt, a newbie's trek
[00:41:42] [SPEAKER_06]: to the next generation coming up that we all rated very low.
[00:41:46] [SPEAKER_06]: That is much lower than IMDB and other people rated it.
[00:41:50] [SPEAKER_06]: So, yeah, yeah, it was.
[00:41:53] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm waiting to curious to hear what people think when that one comes out,
[00:41:56] [SPEAKER_06]: because when we looked up the community score, it's like, oh,
[00:41:59] [SPEAKER_06]: we were nowhere near that one.
[00:42:02] [SPEAKER_06]: And it was pretty universal for the Green Shirt crew.
[00:42:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Like, no, interesting.
[00:42:07] [SPEAKER_06]: But for open pike night coming up, we still have, you know,
[00:42:11] [SPEAKER_06]: almost a year until we get more strange new worlds episodes.
[00:42:14] [SPEAKER_06]: So what are we going to be doing until then, you might ask?
[00:42:18] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, obviously, as we get interviews with writers,
[00:42:22] [SPEAKER_06]: creators, performers, we're going to be doing interviews.
[00:42:27] [SPEAKER_06]: But, you know, that's it's pretty hard to sustain
[00:42:31] [SPEAKER_06]: just with that.
[00:42:32] [SPEAKER_06]: So we are going to finally cover
[00:42:35] [SPEAKER_06]: Discovery Season two and look back on the introduction of Pike
[00:42:40] [SPEAKER_06]: and Spock and Una into this universe.
[00:42:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Because we wish we were watching what they're doing right now, right now.
[00:42:48] [SPEAKER_05]: And you can't do that.
[00:42:50] [SPEAKER_05]: So we want to look back at where these three this iteration
[00:42:53] [SPEAKER_05]: of these three characters came from and see, you know, like,
[00:42:57] [SPEAKER_05]: was this all here in the beginning?
[00:42:59] [SPEAKER_05]: Is this something they decided to build on that kind of a thing?
[00:43:02] [SPEAKER_05]: And also, I know Kam's not a huge fan of season two.
[00:43:05] [SPEAKER_05]: So I think that's going to provide even more entertainment.
[00:43:09] [SPEAKER_05]: But on top of that, we are going to continue
[00:43:11] [SPEAKER_05]: also looking at original series episodes that we think may end up
[00:43:15] [SPEAKER_05]: having relevance in season three, for example, the Dr.
[00:43:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Roger Corby episode, as we had briefly discussed earlier.
[00:43:23] [SPEAKER_05]: We should probably go ahead and watch that now that we know
[00:43:26] [SPEAKER_05]: that Roger Corby is going to be in this.
[00:43:29] [SPEAKER_05]: So look out for coverage of what our little girls made of
[00:43:32] [SPEAKER_05]: at some point in the near future from open Pike night.
[00:43:36] [SPEAKER_05]: And come on. Yeah, I should.
[00:43:38] [SPEAKER_06]: We've been definitely go back and watch that episode
[00:43:40] [SPEAKER_06]: for the first time ever.
[00:43:43] [SPEAKER_05]: And I know we've been given him a hard time
[00:43:47] [SPEAKER_05]: because he has weird taste in everything.
[00:43:50] [SPEAKER_05]: But Cameron did suggest and does love a good holiday episode.
[00:43:56] [SPEAKER_05]: And I that's one thing I can agree with him on.
[00:44:00] [SPEAKER_05]: I do also love holiday episodes.
[00:44:03] [SPEAKER_05]: So, John, what's the next big holiday coming up here?
[00:44:06] [SPEAKER_06]: I want that be, uh, I mean, Labor Day.
[00:44:09] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, that's it's already kind of like everybody's part of a union there.
[00:44:12] [SPEAKER_06]: So I guess after that would be Halloween.
[00:44:15] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, I like Halloween.
[00:44:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Cameron likes Halloween. John likes Halloween.
[00:44:21] [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, who doesn't like Halloween? Let's be real. Right. Yeah.
[00:44:24] [SPEAKER_05]: So if you have suggestions for a Halloween episode, we'd love to hear them.
[00:44:28] [SPEAKER_05]: Obviously, we're fully capable of coming up with that on our own.
[00:44:32] [SPEAKER_05]: The point is that there just might be too many ideas
[00:44:35] [SPEAKER_05]: for a Halloween episode on this end.
[00:44:37] [SPEAKER_05]: But definitely know that we are planning that.
[00:44:41] [SPEAKER_05]: We'll probably also have a holiday episode toward the end of the year.
[00:44:45] [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, heck, maybe Christina Chong will have new Christmas music this year.
[00:44:49] [SPEAKER_05]: There's no way to know. There's no way to know.
[00:44:52] [SPEAKER_05]: The point is, as our good friends at It's Got Star Trek have said in the past,
[00:44:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Open Pike Night will not lay fallow just because
[00:45:01] [SPEAKER_05]: Strange New Worlds is not currently on the air.
[00:45:05] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes, we are.
[00:45:07] [SPEAKER_06]: We are. I mean, I'll just say it.
[00:45:09] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm not trying to become a watch every episode of Star Trek and review it.
[00:45:13] [SPEAKER_06]: So there are lots of watch every episode of Star Trek and review them,
[00:45:16] [SPEAKER_06]: including It's Got Star Trek, who just did coverage of Hard Time,
[00:45:21] [SPEAKER_06]: which is an insanely good episode of Deep Space Nine
[00:45:27] [SPEAKER_06]: and definitely got punch after got punch.
[00:45:30] [SPEAKER_06]: So I enjoyed listening to their coverage of that.
[00:45:32] [SPEAKER_06]: But we do like doing what we do.
[00:45:35] [SPEAKER_06]: We do. We know we we do this because we enjoy chatting with each other
[00:45:40] [SPEAKER_06]: and hearing from the community.
[00:45:42] [SPEAKER_06]: So keep calling in and we'll keep chatting.
[00:45:45] [SPEAKER_06]: We will definitely.
[00:45:48] [SPEAKER_06]: It's as long as I'm going to assume right now that we're going to get screeners
[00:45:51] [SPEAKER_06]: for Lower Decks, so we will we will have some bonus coverage,
[00:45:55] [SPEAKER_06]: something like that to do, you know, some patrons, some public, who knows
[00:45:59] [SPEAKER_06]: as that comes out starting in October.
[00:46:02] [SPEAKER_06]: But Open Pike's not going anywhere.
[00:46:04] [SPEAKER_06]: We're sticking around until Strange New World's season three comes out.
[00:46:07] [SPEAKER_06]: Then we're leaving right at the beginning.
[00:46:09] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, then we're done. Yeah. Off the air. Get air.
[00:46:13] [SPEAKER_05]: I I'll just I'll put it out there just in case anybody is worried.
[00:46:17] [SPEAKER_05]: If John and Cameron ever leave me,
[00:46:20] [SPEAKER_05]: I will just start another Star Trek podcast.
[00:46:23] [SPEAKER_05]: And if that goes out of business, I'll start another Star Trek podcast.
[00:46:29] [SPEAKER_06]: You could do nine Star Trek podcasts and do a hundred episodes each
[00:46:35] [SPEAKER_06]: and still have Star Trek to talk about afterwards.
[00:46:38] [SPEAKER_06]: So, yeah, we are 76 episodes into a 20 episode show.
[00:46:45] [SPEAKER_06]: And we're going strong.
[00:46:47] [SPEAKER_06]: So, you know, it's it's been it's been a long summer
[00:46:52] [SPEAKER_06]: and falls here like it's starting to finally cool down a little bit.
[00:46:56] [SPEAKER_06]: So hopefully as we get into fall time, we'll we'll enjoy watching
[00:47:00] [SPEAKER_06]: just go season two, looking for more interviews from the show,
[00:47:03] [SPEAKER_06]: maybe getting a couple of special interview guests.
[00:47:06] [SPEAKER_06]: You never know. You just have to listen up.
[00:47:08] [SPEAKER_06]: Check all our socials at Open Pike.

[00:48:19] [SPEAKER_06]: We cannot wait to see it, but we have to.
[00:48:22] [SPEAKER_06]: So we got to go.
[00:48:24] [SPEAKER_06]: Pike Night Crew has to go blow the dust off of our
[00:48:28] [SPEAKER_06]: Paramount Plus subscription that doesn't work for old seasons
[00:48:31] [SPEAKER_06]: of stuff as well as like blow the dust off our DVDs of Discovery Season Two.
[00:48:36] [SPEAKER_06]: But I got to go catch back up because, man,
[00:48:38] [SPEAKER_06]: I haven't watched Discovery Season Two in quite a while.
[00:48:41] [SPEAKER_05]: And let me tell you, it is thick.
[00:48:44] [SPEAKER_05]: Like, yeah, you want to talk exposition.
[00:48:47] [SPEAKER_05]: Disco S2 has some exposition.
[00:48:52] [SPEAKER_06]: You think we talk a lot, just wait till you want to just go season two again.
[00:48:56] [SPEAKER_06]: So be sure to clean up after yourselves.
[00:48:59] [SPEAKER_06]: Be sure to tip your servers.
[00:49:00] [SPEAKER_06]: You can go anywhere you want, but you can't stay here.
[00:49:03] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, hey, Cameron, why don't you check out a little movie called Tremors?
[00:49:06] [SPEAKER_05]: I think you might like it if you would just give it a shot.
