[00:00:00] [SPEAKER_17]: This is Christina Chong and you are listening to OPN Pike Night

[00:00:04] [SPEAKER_17]: which puts you squarely on the naughtiest.

[00:00:25] [SPEAKER_06]: Twas the night before Star Date 2387.12

[00:00:30] [SPEAKER_06]: When deep in the beta quadrant, Little Gorn intercepted a subspace transmission.

[00:00:37] [SPEAKER_06]: Little Gorn was very excited to discover that it was a special time for cheer and parties and gifts on Earth.

[00:00:45] [SPEAKER_06]: Big Gorn let Little Gorn know that as members of the Gorn species,

[00:00:50] [SPEAKER_06]: they would never have good will toward humans or their allies in the United Federation of Planets.

[00:00:57] [SPEAKER_06]: Welcome to OPN Pike Night, the strange Yule Worlds podcast where your calls are the prime

[00:01:03] [SPEAKER_06]: directive. I am your host for this Christmas special, Jesse, and of course with me as always

[00:01:10] [SPEAKER_06]: is the immaculate, the mostly present producer John T. Bolds.

[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_06]: Producer John T. Bolds, how are you feeling?

[00:01:18] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm feeling not great. Don't get the flu, kids.

[00:01:25] [SPEAKER_06]: And of course to round out our special little committee here is Cameron Greenshirt Harrison

[00:01:32] [SPEAKER_06]: of Greenshirt Anubis Trek through the next generation. Cameron, how are you feeling

[00:01:37] [SPEAKER_05]: tonight? I'm feeling great. I could eat some cookies, eat some carrots, have a full glass of

[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_05]: milk and just for tonight only why don't you guys refer to me as campus. Like a college.

[00:01:53] [SPEAKER_06]: I didn't think this through. Well that's right we have decided to gather some very big voices

[00:02:02] [SPEAKER_06]: and some regular size voices like our own for a very special Christmas special this year

[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_06]: because we just couldn't help ourselves and some really cool opportunities came up. So

[00:02:16] [SPEAKER_06]: we're going to go ahead and dive right in. Yeah let's start with a little letter

[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_05]: to Santa, for Santa in this metaphor. I don't know, David Jones wrote into us. He said what's

[00:02:30] [SPEAKER_05]: my favorite Christmas movie? It would have to be A Few Choices, National Lampoon's Christmas

[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Vacation, Bad Santa or the original Christmas Carol. Favorite Christmas song? Maybe the

[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_05]: Run DMC song, LOL. Thank you David. Good choices. Excellent choices I think we're going to hear

[00:02:48] [SPEAKER_06]: some of those again as we go through yeah. I tried really hard not to duplicate any answers

[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_06]: from the guests that I knew the answers of but yes you will find there are some

[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_06]: duplicate answers in here. We're going to be talking about all kinds of favorite Christmas

[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_06]: movies, Christmas songs as you heard and of course that means there's going to be some

[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_05]: Christina Chung here so keep your ears open. Well let's just be honest with what's coming.

[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_05]: Christina Chung is headlining this Christmas special of ours. We've got a three-part interview

[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_05]: coming so just keep listening. She keeps coming all night long. And will wow freezing.

[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_05]: No please. Nope just keep going. Just steam roll over that.

[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_06]: But before we get to Christina let's have a nice warm Open Pike Night welcome to our very good

[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_12]: friend and patron caller Steve. What's up Open Pike Night? This is Steve from Sincero back

[00:03:46] [SPEAKER_12]: from a long hiatus and I came here to say one thing. Die Hard is a Christmas movie

[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_12]: and now I came to ask one other thing and that is what in the yippee-ki-yay mother

[00:04:02] [SPEAKER_12]: do you mean to tell me that Jesse has not seen the Die Hard franchise?

[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_12]: I am boycotting this podcast until you do. Live long and prosper.

[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_05]: Jesse your viewing habits are starting to affect our download numbers.

[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_06]: I do have a question though for Steve how will you know that I've watched it if

[00:04:21] [SPEAKER_06]: you're boycotting the podcast?

[00:04:25] [SPEAKER_05]: We'll just have to announce on our social media feeds then.

[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_06]: Alright I guess I do spend some time on the social medias.

[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes Steve 100% Die Hard is a Christmas movie and 100% Jesse does need to watch it all of them.

[00:04:41] [SPEAKER_05]: I say I haven't even seen all of them I've seen the first four.

[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah I'm just I'm not opposed it just kind of never happened naturally but

[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_06]: I know all about what is it Nakatomi Plaza and the guy falling out of the window.

[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_06]: The guy.

[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_06]: So I mean like that's basically most of the movie right?

[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_06]: Hans Christmas icon.

[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah I feel like I've already seen it but we have a lot to get through tonight so let's go ahead

[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_06]: and listen to part one of our Christina Chong interview.

[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_07]: Christina Chong thank you for coming to the Open Pike night stage once again it's great to see you.

[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_17]: Great to be here thanks for inviting me back.

[00:05:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Is Runa there with you is she awake this time?

[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh.

[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Really? What does it say hello? It's camera time.

[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh there she is.

[00:05:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh my goodness.

[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_05]: She's even more adorable in person.

[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_07]: Alright well we're going to do the Runa praise section right now then.

[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_07]: Here is one of our first clips.

[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_15]: Yeah Runa we love Runa it was so joyful to be able to dress Runa and such a great idea.

[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_15]: We hope she comes back next season.

[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_15]: Yeah.

[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_15]: Maybe as a she can dress up as a baby gorn or something.

[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_15]: Yeah.

[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_15]: I don't know.

[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_07]: Hahaha.

[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_07]: Pretty cute.

[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_00]: But what's that?

[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_07]: Yep and?

[00:06:07] [SPEAKER_00]: I remember cutting Runa into like her scenes too where she is making looks I was like yes.

[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_07]: She is very good at giving those looks yeah.

[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_00]: So cute.

[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_00]: They are so good.

[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_07]: Bernadette Croft and Dada Gasperine we had to make sure that Runa heard her praise so.

[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_10]: Oh amazing.

[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_10]: Whoa you're the same as I am too yes you are.

[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Weren't you going to make it into a music video?

[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_17]: Well yeah not yeah but she will won't you she has art to make.

[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_17]: Maybe next Christmas next Christmas or.

[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_06]: She's all about that hustle.

[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_17]: Oh yeah oh yeah 7%.

[00:06:47] [SPEAKER_05]: All right well I want to start with now that you're able to both acknowledge the existence of

[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_05]: and speak about the musical episode did that play a role in your Twin Flames EP coming out?

[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Did you kind of have to talk around the truth before?

[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_17]: Yeah so I didn't have to talk around the truth.

[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_05]: Well done.

[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_17]: So basically it had always been a dream of mine to do a just a single it wasn't even going to be an EP

[00:07:13] [SPEAKER_17]: it was just like a single really or just have one song out there in the world and I thought

[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_17]: I'll know when the right time is to do it or just happen.

[00:07:23] [SPEAKER_17]: And so obviously I pushed for the musical episode and I you know I would talk to

[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_17]: anyone who would listen and ask for a star trek the musical and it happened and then

[00:07:33] [SPEAKER_17]: as I was rehearsing with Elaine overhauled the voice coach she said to me I think you

[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_17]: should do an album and I was like oh do you think I can do it she kind of gave me the confidence

[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_17]: to do it so I thought okay I've always wanted to do this I started off as a singer,

[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_17]: singer dancer, actor doing all three and so I was like maybe this is the time so

[00:07:54] [SPEAKER_17]: I came back to London and I just said to my team I was like look this is

[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_17]: what I'm going to put out into the universe if it happens it happens if it doesn't it doesn't

[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_17]: so then I can't remember what I told you last night but then I told you how I then randomly got

[00:08:10] [SPEAKER_17]: connected to your hairdresser I think yeah so you know that bit already got connected to

[00:08:15] [SPEAKER_17]: Jack Gosling and he did my EP and now he's doing also my album so I've already started

[00:08:19] [SPEAKER_17]: my album I'm four songs into my album. Excellent.

[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_05]: All right so it's just that first piece you had to leave out before

[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_05]: that must have been so tricky to promote. I know.

[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_06]: So the last time that we spoke with you was in Las Vegas and thank you for the signed EPs by the

[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_06]: way. You're welcome. What was it like being able to promote such a personal project while there

[00:08:45] [SPEAKER_06]: were restrictions on actually discussing Star Trek? It was amazing especially because I had so

[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_17]: many conventions throughout the summer and so it was like oh perfect I can't talk about work anyway

[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_17]: so here we are. I'll talk about this. So it was I mean it couldn't have been better timing really could

[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_17]: it? So the fact that I could not only just sell the EPs physically at the conventions

[00:09:09] [SPEAKER_17]: but also you know have something to talk about other than Star Trek was really nice.

[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_07]: That's great. How did Fuck You for Christmas come about?

[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_17]: So, hmm. Do I tell the real story or do I tell the version of the real story?

[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_07]: That is up to you.

[00:09:29] [SPEAKER_17]: So it's to do with the real experience and at the time I wrote the song it was I think

[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_17]: February this year and it was an exaggeration right at that point in January February it was

[00:09:45] [SPEAKER_17]: an exaggeration. This guy had said oh you know he's just a friend, she's just a good friend,

[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_17]: a friend but a good friend. I'm like hmm interesting I don't think she is but whatever

[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_17]: and so I wrote this song and we did it in like an hour or so me and Will Matthew the guy

[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_17]: who I write with and we were like yeah just let's just keep saying fuck.

[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_17]: He's a great jazz, he's a great guitarist full stop but he's a great jazz guitarist and I love

[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_17]: jazz I'd love actually to do a jazz album and so we wrote it and we were like this is just

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_17]: funny we wrote it a couple of hours let's just we just put it on Instagram and just as a joke

[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_17]: and then I got such a good response from it and I was like oh okay people wanted it on the

[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_17]: EP it was like hmm it's not really going to fit on the EP but then when we're all discussing my

[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_17]: manager and everyone we're all discussing we need to put a Christmas song out and I was like I would

[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_17]: love to do that that's one of my dreams and so in a meditation it came to me to do the

[00:10:49] [SPEAKER_17]: fuck you song as a Christmas song and I said it'll be easy just we have some save bells in

[00:10:53] [SPEAKER_17]: the background and then just say Merry fucking Christmas at the end done. So we went back into

[00:11:00] [SPEAKER_17]: the room and we wrote with my manager James Giddings and music manager and also Chesney Hawks

[00:11:06] [SPEAKER_17]: who you guys will know as the one and only single the massive massive hit in the 90s I think it was

[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_17]: the Chesney Hawks and we also manages and Will and myself in the room to make it Christmas

[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_17]: right and at first we were like we either go all the way Christmas or just do it in the

[00:11:23] [SPEAKER_17]: production and like I said put a Merry fucking Christmas at the end but then Chesney and Will

[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_17]: and James and they all came up with some really really great additions to the song and it ended

[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_17]: up being full on Christmas I mean everything that's to do with Christmas is in there I think

[00:11:38] [SPEAKER_17]: practically apart from maybe Turkey for example Chesney came up with the line you're on the

[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_17]: naughty list and no stars for you those two lines which I think are brilliant and they come

[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_17]: right at the end when you're not kind of like expecting it and then we all came up with

[00:11:55] [SPEAKER_17]: you know some really great additions became the Christmas song but the funny thing is

[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_17]: the day I went to record the vocals I had to go and record the vocals a few times actually because

[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_17]: we had to have the the fuck you vocals and then we suddenly were like oh we need a radio edit

[00:12:12] [SPEAKER_17]: let's change the words and go and re-record those bits so I did it a few times

[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_17]: so the day I went to record the fuck you was the day I found out that what I'd actually written

[00:12:27] [SPEAKER_17]: as an exaggeration in February was real oh ouch so I was an hour late I was recording the vocals at

[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_17]: my manager's house and I was like James I'm gonna I'm running about an hour late I'm so sorry

[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_17]: to explain it's good it's all good but I explain when I when I get there and I was like what the

[00:12:47] [SPEAKER_17]: fuck like why is this happening on the day I'm recording the vocals which was about a month ago

[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_17]: whatever and I was like oh my god they're massively duped and you know and so I was like

[00:13:00] [SPEAKER_17]: I went to James's house I was like James I can't talk we just need to sing and I'll

[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_17]: explain afterwards because I was like if I start talking now I'm gonna start crying

[00:13:10] [SPEAKER_17]: and I'm gonna be it's gonna be a puddle and I'm not gonna be able to because when you get really

[00:13:14] [SPEAKER_17]: emotional your vocal cords you can't sing so so yeah so now going into too much detail

[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_17]: just the right amount that's kind of the broad strokes of it yeah well if I may you can hear

[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_06]: that raw emotional nature in the song so I mean you spun gold out of if you had to find out

[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_17]: that was the right timing yeah that was exactly and that's to be honest that's the first thing I

[00:13:38] [SPEAKER_17]: thought I was like brilliant good attitude yeah come to open pike night they said you'll

[00:13:47] [SPEAKER_07]: live your trauma this way well we did actually manage to get the call out and get some callers

[00:13:55] [SPEAKER_07]: to lend their voices to us so here is our first caller Jen hey open pike this is Jen

[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_09]: season girl I do love the first album especially the song can't show love because I can relate to

[00:14:08] [SPEAKER_09]: that pretty well so for Christmas holiday stuff does does Runa get her own stocking and if so

[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_09]: what kind of stuff do you put in it for I hope you guys have an awesome holiday and all that

[00:14:22] [SPEAKER_17]: happy stuff oh that is so cute so yes of course she has her Christmas stockings is that a little

[00:14:27] [SPEAKER_17]: stocking and she gets because she has allergies so she can only 100% venison like treats venison

[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_17]: fish salmon is mainly what she eats so I get her her treats I always get her a load of balls

[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_17]: because we're always losing them on walks so she can only have the really really tiny tiny

[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_17]: balls and her fluffy toys and she's got so many toys I mean because we've got a whole load in

[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_17]: Canada and a whole load here as well so way to make toys for this vlog so yeah so her stocking

[00:14:58] [SPEAKER_05]: will be filled this year for sure nice my uh we have a pet frog now because my son found it out

[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_05]: at grandma's house and somehow the kids found a tiny tiny stocking and they're like well this is

[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_05]: for Victor all right the frog's got a stocking I'm still trying to figure out this is new news

[00:15:16] [SPEAKER_07]: you didn't even tell your co-hosts about this man the heck so if anyone has any ideas on what to

[00:15:23] [SPEAKER_06]: put in a frog stocking let me know well it sounds like you need to take a page out of Christina's

[00:15:28] [SPEAKER_06]: book and make sure all of your future contracts have what we call the runa writer so that when

[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_06]: she gets to set her treats are ready to go yeah oh yeah oh yeah so it sounds like you have a pretty

[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_05]: uh good relationship with Christmas you uh you know you practice the stockings with your

[00:15:46] [SPEAKER_05]: pet you were excited about Christmas song like yeah have you uh you've got Christmas earrings

[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_05]: little Christmas trees that's cool yeah have you always been a big fan of Christmas as

[00:15:55] [SPEAKER_05]: putting out a Christmas song always been a kind of a dream oh yeah I've always wanted to do that

[00:16:00] [SPEAKER_17]: like I have like videos home videos when I was a kid like singing at Christmas time either my mom

[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_17]: playing on the piano and me singing or my granddad playing the guitar and me singing

[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_17]: all the Christmas songs over and over again I remember one was like I'm the fairy on top of

[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_17]: the Christmas tree in his head say I can be because no one ever notices the fairy on the

[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_17]: Christmas tree I kind of wanted to do one like try to write one about a fairy on a Christmas tree

[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_17]: to try and rip that off but it wasn't working I it was one of the ones we were like no

[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_17]: but yeah I love the family I've got lots of young nieces and nephews so it's really

[00:16:47] [SPEAKER_17]: nice spending it with the children and yeah like I I just love the whole family getting

[00:16:52] [SPEAKER_17]: together and I've got a big family the six of us six siblings and obviously all the kids and

[00:16:57] [SPEAKER_17]: partners so yeah I'm looking forward to this year we're gonna do my mom and dad aren't together

[00:17:03] [SPEAKER_17]: so we do two Christmases but with my dad's side we're gonna do everyone's gonna come with like

[00:17:09] [SPEAKER_17]: one or two ideas of a game prizes for the game because we're quite competitive

[00:17:16] [SPEAKER_17]: so I think my game is I'm not sure yet I'm gonna do past the parcel for sure because I think

[00:17:21] [SPEAKER_17]: that's just nice and I like you know make sure everyone gets a little present

[00:17:25] [SPEAKER_17]: past the Christmas parcel but then I need another another idea for a game

[00:17:29] [SPEAKER_17]: but yeah so everyone will just come and bring Goren target practice

[00:17:36] [SPEAKER_06]: who's got the best hit single

[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_17]: yeah that one that the only thing that would be over really quick so

[00:17:46] [SPEAKER_07]: I thought you came to win

[00:17:50] [SPEAKER_07]: well Christmas songs that brings up a good point uh you posted your Christmas playlist

[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_07]: yesterday day before and we wanted to ask you what your top five Christmas songs are

[00:18:02] [SPEAKER_17]: okay listen it's very hard to pick five okay I'm going to my notes here because um

[00:18:09] [SPEAKER_17]: and I can't even put them in the water like I mean listen okay everyone's favorite Christmas

[00:18:13] [SPEAKER_17]: not everyone but most people like Mariah Carey all I want for Christmas it's just the

[00:18:18] [SPEAKER_17]: opening it's just it's just we all know it's Christmas as soon as that song starts Santa Baby

[00:18:27] [SPEAKER_17]: which I must say my song was inspired a little bit by okay um

[00:18:34] [SPEAKER_17]: a bit of Andy Williams it's the most wonderful time of the year

[00:18:38] [SPEAKER_17]: sure okay and for a bit of a you know a bit of more old-fashioned kind of vibe driving home

[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_17]: for Christmas that's always one like you know that has to be played and then it's uh

[00:18:51] [SPEAKER_17]: rocking around the Christmas tree, Brendon Lee, Slay Ride the Runets

[00:18:56] [SPEAKER_17]: okay and then White Christmas yeah and then maybe it's cold outside

[00:19:02] [SPEAKER_17]: and that's it that's it that's like 10 or something I don't know

[00:19:06] [SPEAKER_05]: do you have a preferred singer for uh Santa Baby uh Kylie Kylie oh okay yeah it's gotta be Kylie

[00:19:13] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah I grew up with Madonna but uh did you I did yeah but Earthic Itz is also hard to top you

[00:19:19] [SPEAKER_05]: can't beat Catwoman yeah that's a classic one isn't it yeah all right guys well that gets us

[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_05]: to our first question for ourselves what are our top five Christmas songs

[00:19:33] [SPEAKER_06]: ooh do we want to go round Robin or should we just do a list at a time

[00:19:37] [SPEAKER_06]: I practiced the list at a time let's do a list at a time yeah okay yeah Cameron would you do

[00:19:44] [SPEAKER_05]: us the honors and open up your presents first absolutely I'm with Christina here this was

[00:19:50] [SPEAKER_05]: really hard every year every year I'm like what are my favorite Christmas songs and it's been

[00:19:55] [SPEAKER_05]: hard to choose this segment has forced me to because I love Christmas I love Christmas music

[00:20:00] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't think that there is a mainstream on regular rotation Christmas song I dislike

[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_05]: so I did some deep deep soul searching and I I picked five I've got uh Bean Crosby's

[00:20:14] [SPEAKER_05]: White Christmas I'm a sucker for the bittersweet kind of sad Christmas songs that tell tell

[00:20:19] [SPEAKER_05]: story take you to a place just like my second one Christmas Baby Please Come Home by by Darling Love

[00:20:29] [SPEAKER_05]: used in a uh a Muppet Christmas movie I made once with people so that's probably why that has

[00:20:35] [SPEAKER_05]: a special place uh next song Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas by Frank Sinatra I just

[00:20:40] [SPEAKER_05]: that one just feels like the most Christmas song to me love it uh next getting a little more uh

[00:20:46] [SPEAKER_05]: esoteric here Silver and Gold from The Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer uh Claymation not the most

[00:20:54] [SPEAKER_05]: well-known song from that movie of course there are some big ones from that movie but

[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Silver and Gold I think the minor sings it uh but I don't know why I just I love that song

[00:21:03] [SPEAKER_05]: you don't hear it on regular rotation but it's good good good go check it out

[00:21:06] [SPEAKER_05]: and then finally I've got to go with some John Williams the Home Alone theme Somewhere in My Memory

[00:21:12] [SPEAKER_05]: that's the title I had to look that up I didn't know it had a title Somewhere in My Memory is

[00:21:16] [SPEAKER_05]: the Home Alone Theme and just I that comes on my playlist and I forget that it's from Home Alone

[00:21:22] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm just like oh yeah that great song they use in Home Alone oh no written for the movie and

[00:21:26] [SPEAKER_06]: it's such an iconic it's such a good song yeah all right producer John slide down the chimney

[00:21:32] [SPEAKER_07]: and give us your answers all right uh rounding out the top five is Christmas of Grand Zero by

[00:21:38] [SPEAKER_07]: Weird Al nice I've always liked that song my next two are very very specific um the Deck the

[00:21:47] [SPEAKER_07]: Halls from the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas album and also Good King Wenceslas from the

[00:21:53] [SPEAKER_07]: Mannheim Steamroller Christmas album it's that is hands down that that album means Christmas to

[00:22:01] [SPEAKER_07]: me and has since my childhood and always will and those those synthesizers go on man if you have not

[00:22:07] [SPEAKER_07]: heard Mannheim Steamroller Christmas go listen to it 100% the only reason I didn't pick one of those

[00:22:13] [SPEAKER_05]: tracks is because the whole album is just kind of I know yeah yeah yeah I was like what what two

[00:22:19] [SPEAKER_07]: were always like when I think that what are the two that pop in my head and those two are

[00:22:24] [SPEAKER_07]: the first two but that that whole album is insane um and then my my next two are actually very generic

[00:22:33] [SPEAKER_07]: and can be like it is a case by case basis for who's performing them but Carol of the Bells

[00:22:40] [SPEAKER_07]: I think is an absolute banger of a Christmas song and then if you want to if performed right

[00:22:48] [SPEAKER_07]: Oh Holy Night makes me a big old mess every time just blubbering crying at that song every time so

[00:22:56] [SPEAKER_07]: those are my top five that's a solid fucking less producer John that yeah that's

[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_06]: that's gonna be a hard list to beat John especially with my answers you guys know me

[00:23:06] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm very I believe the children call it basic um but I I'm just gonna open up with Last

[00:23:13] [SPEAKER_06]: Christmas by Wham I don't care about Whamageddon I don't care how many people hate that song like

[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_06]: it is a classic for a reason and I think until my next answer this was the most modern song on

[00:23:29] [SPEAKER_06]: my list which of course leads me to all I want for Christmas is you yeah right because to to

[00:23:36] [SPEAKER_06]: take a subject like Christmas and write something that puts you at the top of the charts every

[00:23:41] [SPEAKER_06]: single year like that's just an accomplishment and I absolutely enjoy that song all the way through

[00:23:48] [SPEAKER_06]: my family loves the music video my daughter loves to dance along to it so I had to pick that of

[00:23:54] [SPEAKER_06]: course the one and only Mariah Carey now this next one there are two versions that I really like

[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_06]: okay so you're a mean one Mr Grinch is an absolute Christmas classic right there's there's

[00:24:09] [SPEAKER_06]: no two ways about that I really love the version sung by is it sung by Boris Karloff he

[00:24:16] [SPEAKER_06]: narrates it so you might sing it sounds like the same voice the first version of this song that I

[00:24:22] [SPEAKER_06]: love of course is the original from the 1966 animated Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole

[00:24:27] [SPEAKER_06]: Christmas which I maintain is the best version of that story get the live action remake out

[00:24:31] [SPEAKER_06]: of my face I don't want to see the CG animated version of the Grinch only the original 1966

[00:24:38] [SPEAKER_06]: version lives in my heart to parallel that if you haven't heard the Gary Hoey cover of it

[00:24:44] [SPEAKER_06]: go check it out it's all electric guitar it is just so much fun and it just it works for me

[00:24:53] [SPEAKER_05]: I believe Thurl Ravenscroft which is like the most amazing name

[00:24:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Thurl Ravenscroft saying the like that's even a Christmasy name

[00:25:04] [SPEAKER_06]: up next for me is going to be Carol of the Bells John as soon as you said that I was like I feel

[00:25:10] [SPEAKER_06]: better now because I share good taste with John and John is a good arbiter of taste

[00:25:15] [SPEAKER_06]: and then last on my list not last in the rank but just the fifth one that I came up with

[00:25:21] [SPEAKER_06]: is Blue Christmas by Elvis there's something about a classic and that song man it gets you like

[00:25:28] [SPEAKER_06]: like Cameron was saying it's not necessarily the happiest Christmas song but it really puts you in

[00:25:34] [SPEAKER_06]: that mood of cold December nights so I had to go with Blue Christmas guys this is a banger I guess

[00:25:41] [SPEAKER_05]: of 14 songs because we had one double so yeah this is a great playlist I think absolutely I'll

[00:25:48] [SPEAKER_05]: just give an honorable mention to the album a very special Christmas it's a lot of 80s covers of

[00:25:55] [SPEAKER_05]: Christmas songs and it's really great I think that I think Run DMC is on there and Madonna's

[00:26:03] [SPEAKER_05]: Santa Baby and that I just grew up with that album so that to me always is Christmas

[00:26:08] [SPEAKER_06]: all right well let's hear from our next few callers on their favorite Christmas songs

[00:26:14] [SPEAKER_06]: and movies first up I think we've got Grayson

[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Happy holidays open pike night thanks for having me on um I have a song in a movie for you and neither

[00:26:25] [SPEAKER_02]: of them are specifically Christmas related but they are kind of seasonally related so I hope

[00:26:31] [SPEAKER_02]: that's not breaking too many rules the first thing is a song um and it's called a song for

[00:26:37] [SPEAKER_02]: a winter's night originally written and performed by Gordon Lightfoot but it's the Sarah McLaughlin

[00:26:42] [SPEAKER_02]: version that just makes me feel so warm and cozy it's it's like when Captain Picard gets the blindfold

[00:26:49] [SPEAKER_02]: taken off in in the Nexus and he's in that kind of Dickens house with the frosted windows and the

[00:26:56] [SPEAKER_02]: snow falling in a fireplace and overstuffed chairs and a cup of Earl Grey tea and and and

[00:27:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Guinen reminding him that time has no meaning that's exactly what that Sarah McLaughlin song

[00:27:08] [SPEAKER_02]: brings up for me um except without all the damn kids get rid of the kids and and that's the Sarah

[00:27:14] [SPEAKER_02]: McLaughlin song as for movies it's a Thanksgiving movie not a Christmas movie that I love but planes

[00:27:20] [SPEAKER_02]: trains and automobiles always says holiday season to me as a person who um uh frequently had to

[00:27:26] [SPEAKER_02]: travel to multiple families in multiple cities for holidays it really speaks to the dread

[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_02]: that I start feeling in October knowing the pressures and expectations of the holiday season

[00:27:37] [SPEAKER_02]: are about to begin um also the scene where Steve Martin is renting a car that kills me every single

[00:27:45] [SPEAKER_02]: time I think it's where I learned to love the F word and in the spirit of that merry effing

[00:27:52] [SPEAKER_02]: holidays to all of you and to all at a good night and those aren't pillows

[00:27:59] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah just rewatch that uh Thanksgiving week and uh who's who's uh dr crusher's friend from

[00:28:06] [SPEAKER_05]: remember me john dylan quays dylan quays is in there he falls asleep on steve martin shoulder so

[00:28:13] [SPEAKER_05]: uh it's good to see a good ct and g guest star there yeah great movie great movie

[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_06]: I have to agree like it counts yeah it's in the holidays it totally counts thank you so much

[00:28:23] [SPEAKER_06]: Grayson all right now let's hear from our good friend Jen hey open flag this is Jen

[00:28:31] [SPEAKER_09]: my favorite christmas song is probably mary did you know because it's a it's a nice smooth song

[00:28:41] [SPEAKER_09]: my favorite christmas movie is a toss up between diehard which is a christmas movie

[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_09]: or um emit otter's band it's like a jim henson muppets stop motion animation I guess I don't know

[00:28:58] [SPEAKER_09]: what it would be little puppets um definitely my favorite from when I was a kid merry christmas

[00:29:04] [SPEAKER_05]: everybody thank you so much for mentioning emit otters christmas jug band whatever the name

[00:29:10] [SPEAKER_05]: of that thing is I never saw this kid if I'd watch as a kid it probably would rank in my top

[00:29:14] [SPEAKER_05]: five I didn't watch it until just like 10 years ago but it is everything you would expect it is

[00:29:20] [SPEAKER_05]: classic jim henson it's so good I definitely recommend anyone go check it out man who would

[00:29:26] [SPEAKER_06]: have guessed that Cameron would love a christmas movie with muppets or puppets in it what that's

[00:29:31] [SPEAKER_06]: crazy that's absolutely crazy and now we have a very special guest who recently joined us for

[00:29:39] [SPEAKER_06]: our stream of thought series where patrons can join and watch along live with a movie or tv show

[00:29:46] [SPEAKER_06]: that one of the strange new worlds writers used as inspiration when crafting one of their episodes

[00:29:51] [SPEAKER_06]: and I just cannot wait for you to hear the answers from onitra johnson as a little bit of a treat

[00:30:01] [SPEAKER_06]: onitra if you were to pick like maybe your top three to five christmas songs what would they be

[00:30:09] [SPEAKER_10]: I saw grandma kissing wait no mommy kissing santa grandma even though I guess that was a cool

[00:30:15] [SPEAKER_05]: this is before after she got ran over by the reindeer

[00:30:19] [SPEAKER_10]: I think that's why I was gonna say that one next to the song jiddethy

[00:30:25] [SPEAKER_10]: and anything by mariah carrey yeah yeah I love me some rye carry and I guess I'm kind of a

[00:30:32] [SPEAKER_10]: grinch it was funny we were on a production call the other day and um one of our producers

[00:30:36] [SPEAKER_10]: like listening christmas songs I'm like I'm out

[00:30:43] [SPEAKER_06]: so you're the mean one on set I see unless they feed me

[00:30:51] [SPEAKER_10]: we got horda burgers who wants horda burgers yes it's got some sort of goo in here

[00:31:03] [SPEAKER_05]: be looking for the audio version of that episode dropping sometime in january you'll

[00:31:08] [SPEAKER_05]: be able to listen to our conversation with onitra on the devil in the dark and that's where the

[00:31:13] [SPEAKER_06]: horta burgers joke comes from I just I didn't just have that ready to go in case you're wondering

[00:31:18] [SPEAKER_06]: you got the punchline a month before you hear the setup for that yeah yeah it's a time travel joke

[00:31:25] [SPEAKER_06]: well as you know we cannot have christmas without presents I mean you can that's like

[00:31:30] [SPEAKER_06]: the whole point of the grinch but we figured you know since we as star trek fans did get

[00:31:36] [SPEAKER_06]: the very special present this year in the form of the season two blue ray deleted scenes we figured

[00:31:41] [SPEAKER_06]: we'll just pick our favorite deleted scene and talk about it a little bit I think for me it has to be

[00:31:49] [SPEAKER_06]: the bar scene that got cut out of under the cloak of war this is right after ortega storms out

[00:31:56] [SPEAKER_06]: and I believe chapel and then benga end up following her and they kind of had this little

[00:32:03] [SPEAKER_06]: meetup at the bar and it shows that once it's just those three they're totally fine because

[00:32:09] [SPEAKER_06]: again with the theme of the episode their veterans so they get it and they fully understand why they

[00:32:15] [SPEAKER_06]: had to leave and they share a drink it's a really warm scene it almost has a christmas feel to it but

[00:32:22] [SPEAKER_06]: I totally get why they cut it it it adjusts the pacing of that episode just a little bit too

[00:32:29] [SPEAKER_06]: much I think but I am very glad that we at least got to see it on the blu-ray I agree with that and

[00:32:34] [SPEAKER_05]: it's the only more tegas deleted scene we got too isn't it mm-hmm yeah I did put in my notes I can't

[00:32:40] [SPEAKER_06]: believe they cut an ortega scene but but then I slowly realized why they did it so I will be okay

[00:32:48] [SPEAKER_07]: eventually I've super enjoyed spock trying to chew gum yeah that was just we heard about it we

[00:32:55] [SPEAKER_05]: got to see it payoff was there of all the scenes if I could only put one scene back in I think I'd

[00:33:01] [SPEAKER_05]: make an argument for that scene staying in yeah it was yeah I think it would fit and I think it

[00:33:06] [SPEAKER_06]: would work I have to assume it was only cut for time I wonder if it's only got very good because

[00:33:10] [SPEAKER_05]: it definitely looked like Ethan peck was corpsing there at the end like that was that was

[00:33:13] [SPEAKER_05]: even laughing that was not spock ah gum nuts and pickles uh so I missed the note a little

[00:33:22] [SPEAKER_05]: but I just notes on all the deleted scenes or at least the ones that jumped out to me uh just

[00:33:27] [SPEAKER_05]: the broken circle was a really interesting one because one I always feel bad for actors who are

[00:33:31] [SPEAKER_05]: only in deleted scenes there's the the woman there at the beginning who I'm like oh she was so

[00:33:37] [SPEAKER_05]: excited to be on star trek she got everyone to watch the episode when it premiered and

[00:33:41] [SPEAKER_05]: she didn't make it but yeah that scene did not need to be in there everything that scene did

[00:33:46] [SPEAKER_05]: they did in three lines at the end of that episode so I thought they did the right thing there

[00:33:53] [SPEAKER_05]: a lot of the tomorrow and tomorrow tomorrow scenes they were fine they were definitely

[00:33:58] [SPEAKER_05]: fine to cut too it was it was fun to see a little bit more interplay between

[00:34:01] [SPEAKER_05]: Kirk and Lon but they they didn't need to be in there uh the gum scene definitely should have stayed

[00:34:06] [SPEAKER_05]: lost in translation had some marvelous deleted scenes the scene with Pellia in the hallway

[00:34:12] [SPEAKER_05]: that would probably be my second choice to stay in the awkward staring between her and

[00:34:17] [SPEAKER_05]: Una at the end was just fucking cold it was so good it was really good the longer conversation

[00:34:24] [SPEAKER_05]: in the shuttle some of it I might have kept in some was good to leave um those old scientists

[00:34:29] [SPEAKER_05]: was it was kind of cute but again that was not needed to be everything worked without that scene

[00:34:35] [SPEAKER_05]: agree with under the cloak of war and then finally of course we get our

[00:34:39] [SPEAKER_05]: Klingon opera that we've all been waiting for now at the end of the day I definitely

[00:34:44] [SPEAKER_05]: think that it was right to go with the k-pop it definitely the crew's reaction and maybe they

[00:34:49] [SPEAKER_05]: were just using reaction shots when they told the crew to react to k-pop because it did not work for

[00:34:54] [SPEAKER_05]: the Klingon opera when pike turns away at the end was like what the fuck was that does not work

[00:34:59] [SPEAKER_05]: for the opera but I kind of think the opera worked better to get you into it and I think maybe

[00:35:03] [SPEAKER_05]: only because I could actually understand what the Klingons were singing in the opera version

[00:35:08] [SPEAKER_05]: whereas like I only know like half the other lines in the k-pop so I liked hearing

[00:35:12] [SPEAKER_05]: actually what they were saying and then they were funny lines so that was that would be my only

[00:35:17] [SPEAKER_05]: a reason to to give a thumbs up to the opera well not not to be a crampus or anything Cameron but

[00:35:25] [SPEAKER_06]: I just I think the k-pop is just a better song and it fits better with like the feeling of the

[00:35:32] [SPEAKER_06]: episode which is kind of this light yeah airy yeah energetic and it it I don't know there

[00:35:39] [SPEAKER_06]: there's to your point there was kind of no spot for them to react in any way other than what did we

[00:35:45] [SPEAKER_06]: just see and I think if you show us the Klingon opera that's what you expect right and energy 100%

[00:35:51] [SPEAKER_05]: is why the k-pop works but I think I think that's why the Klingon works for me like the first

[00:35:57] [SPEAKER_05]: beat going to it is it's such a shift it's funny it is and then it overstays us welcome

[00:36:02] [SPEAKER_05]: that slow pace I can agree with that yeah but yeah that was our only new strange new world's

[00:36:09] [SPEAKER_05]: material we'll be getting for who knows how long a year and a half so we had to we had to

[00:36:15] [SPEAKER_06]: savor those new scenes from that world speaking of things to savor let's go ahead and play

[00:36:21] [SPEAKER_06]: the next part of our Christina Chong interview back to your music you know I've noticed you've

[00:36:30] [SPEAKER_05]: been doing a lot of promo on social media with that is that something that comes naturally to you

[00:36:34] [SPEAKER_05]: or are you kind of still finding your your way through that world to be honest like it's fun for

[00:36:38] [SPEAKER_17]: a few days when you start a new project and then it suddenly goes like oh my god I have to do it again

[00:36:45] [SPEAKER_17]: I think I've got to keep pushing this like it is work I'm not going to lie it is a full-time

[00:36:51] [SPEAKER_17]: job obviously I have a team helping me in the background but like even then it's still because

[00:36:57] [SPEAKER_17]: I've got to be the one like even when I finish this I've got a couple more interviews and I've

[00:37:02] [SPEAKER_17]: got to do like a whole load of things as well but yeah I it's that thing isn't that's just

[00:37:09] [SPEAKER_17]: how social media works not everyone's going to see your post but you have to keep posting you have to

[00:37:15] [SPEAKER_17]: keep daily kind of this is a daily grind in it but but yeah I mean I do enjoy parts of it

[00:37:22] [SPEAKER_05]: but it's also relentless yeah as our social media person I'm sure Jesse can relate yeah it is

[00:37:28] [SPEAKER_06]: relentless yeah and yeah that that kind of clamoring for the attention span that's already so short

[00:37:35] [SPEAKER_06]: right it's like I just need to stay in front of people's eyes like maybe by the eighth time they

[00:37:41] [SPEAKER_07]: see our link they'll click it yeah maybe yeah so with that and with all the new things you've

[00:37:47] [SPEAKER_07]: gotten into with your musical career what's been the biggest surprise as you've embarked

[00:37:52] [SPEAKER_17]: on your musical journey um I guess the fact that I mean I know it's gonna that actually people want

[00:37:59] [SPEAKER_17]: to listen to my music because I did it I did it as like a fun thing for me and I just genuinely

[00:38:05] [SPEAKER_17]: wasn't thinking that people would actually want to listen like I just thought it'll be out there

[00:38:09] [SPEAKER_17]: in Spotify or maybe get 50 monthly listeners or something like that but the fact that it's

[00:38:14] [SPEAKER_17]: taken off in such a way of it's a thing and I now have a music manager I now have all these like

[00:38:23] [SPEAKER_17]: ideas and suddenly visions for the future with it and I'm like where did that come from it just

[00:38:28] [SPEAKER_17]: came from like oh maybe let's see and now suddenly there's a career path almost for

[00:38:34] [SPEAKER_17]: so that was the biggest surprise actually the fact that it's actually gonna potentially become

[00:38:39] [SPEAKER_17]: something and because it's just fun I just love it like that part of it not the promo part but I

[00:38:45] [SPEAKER_17]: yeah I love I love the singing I love the creating together with people the fact that you can do it

[00:38:50] [SPEAKER_17]: in one day and suddenly you have a song um I haven't got to performing live yet but

[00:38:59] [SPEAKER_17]: that will be for next year like I definitely want to build up to that and get to a point

[00:39:03] [SPEAKER_17]: where I'm comfortable with that learning the guitar so I can start writing my own stuff by

[00:39:09] [SPEAKER_17]: myself you only need to learn like a few chords right I normally I need somebody with me that somebody

[00:39:15] [SPEAKER_17]: actually wants to manage me as well it's like and believes in me like he sent me um he went he

[00:39:22] [SPEAKER_17]: knows one of the guys in Muse I just want to watch them at the O2 and he sent me a picture

[00:39:27] [SPEAKER_17]: from where he was sat or stood at the stage at the O2 in London huge marina and he sent to me

[00:39:35] [SPEAKER_17]: he's like this would be fun wouldn't wouldn't it and I was like and I fear in me the fear and I was like

[00:39:44] [SPEAKER_17]: yeah but um can we build up to it as in like let's let's just like calm down here

[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_17]: and he replied saying I haven't actually told him this so he'll probably listen to this and

[00:39:55] [SPEAKER_17]: found out but um and then he replied going oh yeah I wouldn't be working with anyone if I didn't

[00:40:00] [SPEAKER_17]: think this was a possibility and I was like no that's not what I meant he thought let's build

[00:40:06] [SPEAKER_17]: up to it I was like no no no so that's kind of in my mind now and you know there's so many

[00:40:12] [SPEAKER_17]: things I'd love to do and I and I just feel like I don't want to pigeon myself with my sound

[00:40:18] [SPEAKER_17]: like I feel like I can do and I want to do lots of different things you know and I will sound

[00:40:25] [SPEAKER_17]: different like musical theatre sounds different to pop sounds different to jazz you know my

[00:40:30] [SPEAKER_17]: Christmas song sounds completely different through my EP and obviously the um space rhapsody

[00:40:37] [SPEAKER_17]: you know it's all there my voice is different so I would love to keep tapping into that and

[00:40:43] [SPEAKER_17]: not just on the commercial pop side but also just in general just I just want it to be fun so

[00:40:50] [SPEAKER_05]: if it's fun I'll do it kind of thing you know very cool was there a moment when you realized

[00:40:55] [SPEAKER_17]: it had become bigger than you anticipated well I think that's when uh my man when I had somebody

[00:41:01] [SPEAKER_17]: wanting to represent me I was like what you think you can make money out of me really this is real

[00:41:08] [SPEAKER_17]: that's good but yeah that that was the point really when I was like oh okay and then the fact

[00:41:16] [SPEAKER_17]: that we sold out all the EPs like so quickly had to get more in and was just not expecting any of

[00:41:21] [SPEAKER_06]: it at all very cool so speaking of doing it because it's fun yeah open pike night has a bit

[00:41:29] [SPEAKER_06]: of a convention tradition that dictates that we sing karaoke with fans that we meet at conventions

[00:41:36] [SPEAKER_17]: so what is your go-to karaoke song um crazy crazy for feeling I don't know the words now

[00:41:50] [SPEAKER_16]: I'm crazy for trying and I'm crazy and I'm crazy for loving you yeah that would be my go to I think

[00:42:02] [SPEAKER_06]: good choice excellent guys we gotta we gotta learn that song

[00:42:07] [SPEAKER_17]: or it would be obviously summer love in Greece okay well that one we all know

[00:42:17] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah a fun one as a karaoke place the other day that had a subspace rhapsody the whole album in it

[00:42:23] [SPEAKER_05]: no my hand that I'm the X really tanked on it but that's me wow I tell you what though how would

[00:42:32] [SPEAKER_17]: that feel would be is a freaking hard song to sing a karaoke I mean yeah I wasn't gonna attack anyone

[00:42:38] [SPEAKER_17]: I mean even I could pull that off at karaoke all right we have another call here here is Abby

[00:42:46] [SPEAKER_13]: returning you open pike night stage hey hey open pike and Christina it's abby summer from the

[00:42:52] [SPEAKER_13]: first flight podcast so nice to talk to all of you again as this year draws to a close and we're in

[00:42:58] [SPEAKER_13]: our festive reflective time of the year I know I always look back and think about something that

[00:43:03] [SPEAKER_13]: I might have learned over the past year that I want to carry with me into the future now it

[00:43:08] [SPEAKER_13]: doesn't have to be something big and earth shattering it could be something silly and

[00:43:11] [SPEAKER_13]: little like learning how to poach the perfect egg so I'm wondering what have you all

[00:43:18] [SPEAKER_13]: learned throughout this year Christina this is for you mostly but gentlemen you're welcome to answer

[00:43:22] [SPEAKER_13]: as well what's something you want to carry with you into 2024 and beyond that you have gotten from

[00:43:28] [SPEAKER_13]: this year 2023 which has had quite a lot of ups and downs I hope this finds all of you

[00:43:33] [SPEAKER_17]: in yours well and we will talk soon great question abby um yeah so for me huh this is

[00:43:47] [SPEAKER_17]: me my granddad was kind of like my you know

[00:43:53] [SPEAKER_17]: I don't when I was a little girl like I loved him I would go everywhere with him we lived with him

[00:43:58] [SPEAKER_17]: for a period of time and when I was eight he left my gran for another lady and kind of cut me off

[00:44:07] [SPEAKER_17]: that connection that I have with my granddad kind of went and I was a very traumatized by

[00:44:13] [SPEAKER_17]: that as a kid I was really upset and never really had a relationship with him ever since then up until

[00:44:21] [SPEAKER_17]: last week when I went to because you know and he closed his heart I didn't see him a few times here

[00:44:27] [SPEAKER_17]: and there but it was never the same like he closed off his heart and I had closed off my heart

[00:44:32] [SPEAKER_17]: so it was a very service level that connection had gone but it always held out hope that it

[00:44:37] [SPEAKER_17]: would come back one day and I think part of why it wasn't allowed to be there between us is you know

[00:44:45] [SPEAKER_17]: when you've cheated I guess and gone with the new the new family the new life there's obviously fear

[00:44:53] [SPEAKER_17]: in the new relationship that either you could go back or you could cheat again or

[00:44:57] [SPEAKER_17]: you know so obviously the new lady I was never allowed to be on my own with my granddad ever

[00:45:02] [SPEAKER_17]: again after that so I could never gain that connection and I and I still hope that one day

[00:45:09] [SPEAKER_17]: it would come back and I'd have the opportunity so anyway last week my mom he's has dementia now

[00:45:18] [SPEAKER_17]: and um and his wife wanted a bit of respite so he went to a care home for a week and I just saw

[00:45:26] [SPEAKER_17]: that as my opportunity I was like this is the time when I can be alone with him

[00:45:30] [SPEAKER_17]: and so I went up and obviously there's years later decades later and I just told him everything

[00:45:37] [SPEAKER_17]: of how I felt and how much I missed him and how much I loved him and how I never thought this day

[00:45:44] [SPEAKER_17]: would come and you know and and we were both just he was I have a video of him just crying his

[00:45:50] [SPEAKER_17]: eyes out and and he remembered who I was and you know I let him listen to the f*** you song

[00:45:56] [SPEAKER_17]: he was laughing and he's like oh he said I missed you too I'm gonna miss you I thought you'd gone

[00:46:01] [SPEAKER_17]: for every kind of thing so it was like a moment that I had with him that I never thought would

[00:46:05] [SPEAKER_17]: come but what it taught me was love never disappears it's always there in the ether

[00:46:15] [SPEAKER_17]: in this world as energy you choose whether to cut that off or not and same with anything really

[00:46:25] [SPEAKER_17]: like rejection abandonment those kind of things like you choose to accept that or not so yeah so love

[00:46:32] [SPEAKER_17]: is always there it doesn't disappear like I never thought that years and years and years later

[00:46:39] [SPEAKER_17]: I would still be able to have that same connection with my dad that I had when I was eight

[00:46:44] [SPEAKER_17]: well granddad that I had when I was eight I saw it in his eyes that same look that I remembered

[00:46:49] [SPEAKER_17]: so that's my thing that's my lesson that I'm taking into the next year

[00:46:55] [SPEAKER_06]: I love it nice I learned how to perfectly poach an egg so that was I'm just kidding

[00:47:02] [SPEAKER_07]: Abby that's not really what I learned I no no no I learned how to perfectly boil

[00:47:07] [SPEAKER_07]: eggs like in the last couple months so I actually learned that you should try to be grateful

[00:47:14] [SPEAKER_06]: while you're in the moment like there's when we were in Las Vegas we kept looking around

[00:47:22] [SPEAKER_06]: just kind of in awe of like look at all these Trekkies here for this cool thing

[00:47:28] [SPEAKER_06]: look at the fun that we are having turn off the analytical part of your brain for like two

[00:47:33] [SPEAKER_06]: minutes just enjoy yourself because you know the whole time we're there we're like who do we

[00:47:38] [SPEAKER_06]: need to see next how do we you know get our name out who should we give stickers to

[00:47:42] [SPEAKER_06]: like which booth should we go to but it was really just like once we kind of relaxed a minute I think

[00:47:48] [SPEAKER_06]: probably after the first day it was just like this is an absolute blast and we don't need to think about

[00:47:54] [SPEAKER_06]: the next day or the day after we can just live in this and I'm going to make a genuine effort

[00:47:59] [SPEAKER_06]: to do that because getting to make this show is so much fun and obviously people like you Christina

[00:48:05] [SPEAKER_06]: are part of what makes it that way so thank you again for being here oh it's amazing that's

[00:48:09] [SPEAKER_05]: beautiful I would say it's not worth putting a whole lot of time and energy into something that

[00:48:16] [SPEAKER_05]: doesn't drive you especially career wise yes you're not feeling something don't try to force it yes

[00:48:23] [SPEAKER_17]: look for what makes you happy yes and then it will come if it makes you happy and you're having

[00:48:28] [SPEAKER_17]: fun doing it you're actually having fun doing it it will happen my uncle used to always tell me

[00:48:36] [SPEAKER_06]: just leap and the net will appear I promise I love that leap of faith from the lion's head yeah

[00:48:45] [SPEAKER_07]: I definitely learned there is no beast that's too big to be

[00:48:48] [SPEAKER_07]: eaten with enough small bites like no matter how daunting something is like keep working at it a

[00:48:55] [SPEAKER_07]: little bit at a time and you'll get through it I love that this is a good episode you guys day

[00:49:03] [SPEAKER_07]: thank you abby wait where's star trek podcast

[00:49:15] [SPEAKER_06]: nobody does it like Christina chong am I right gentlemen I mean steering nobody except it was

[00:49:20] [SPEAKER_06]: so fun to talk to her again yeah and she had the Christmas outfit on it was she had little

[00:49:26] [SPEAKER_06]: Christmas earrings we got to see runa I mean it was runa it was like a whole other Christmas

[00:49:31] [SPEAKER_05]: present it really was 100% and you know every time we this was only a 45 minute

[00:49:36] [SPEAKER_05]: channel we still got some like deep stuff from her like some stories these people have stories

[00:49:41] [SPEAKER_05]: and know how to tell their life stories thank you abby for your question which really brought

[00:49:45] [SPEAKER_05]: a lot of that up let's just jump to your call next hey hey open pike it's abby summer from the

[00:49:51] [SPEAKER_13]: first flight podcast happy and merry whatever you and your celebrate and to all the other

[00:49:56] [SPEAKER_13]: people listening out there I just have to throw in here that I am not the world's most festive person

[00:50:01] [SPEAKER_13]: but I have two things on the holidays that I always love one of them is muppet Christmas carol

[00:50:06] [SPEAKER_13]: the muppets are another huge love of mine and that is the perfect version of a Christmas carol

[00:50:11] [SPEAKER_13]: and I won't hear any other talk but really my first love at Christmas time since I was

[00:50:18] [SPEAKER_13]: young enough that I don't even remember time before it is the abominable snowman

[00:50:22] [SPEAKER_13]: from the classic Rudolph the red nose reindeer because I really think that there need to be

[00:50:27] [SPEAKER_13]: more monsters in holiday fair because he's just fun and I have a great collection of a

[00:50:33] [SPEAKER_13]: bonvul snowman that turn up all around my house and my classroom and all that and

[00:50:37] [SPEAKER_13]: because you know what it's just fun and half the time I feel like roaring in the holidays

[00:50:41] [SPEAKER_13]: anyway so hope all of you and yours are well and remember bumbles bounce

[00:50:48] [SPEAKER_06]: you guys I can't be the only one that has a hard time believing that Abby is not the most festive

[00:50:53] [SPEAKER_06]: person I know that like but just through my whole world view out of whack yeah but thank you so much

[00:51:00] [SPEAKER_06]: Abby you are one of our most consistent callers you always bring the insight and the brilliant

[00:51:07] [SPEAKER_06]: questions and guests are always happy to answer them because you spent time figuring out what

[00:51:12] [SPEAKER_05]: to ask so thank you so much Abby I'm going to go ahead and make a guess right now as you are

[00:51:17] [SPEAKER_05]: listening to this in this moment you're wearing a festive Christmas sweater and mixing a bowl of

[00:51:22] [SPEAKER_05]: cookies I'm just not my guess let me know on social media how close I am and I want to thank Abby

[00:51:28] [SPEAKER_07]: and all of our patrons for all the support they give us and and carrying us through helping us

[00:51:33] [SPEAKER_07]: make open pike possible and you know we got our 25 minute set supporters Steve who we heard from

[00:51:39] [SPEAKER_07]: earlier Mark who we're about to hear from Pam but every supporter we have is just the best the best

[00:51:48] [SPEAKER_01]: and on that note let's go ahead and hear from Mark hi everyone this is engineer Mark and we're

[00:51:54] [SPEAKER_01]: talking holidays who two years ago I was not in a good place for any of this and now

[00:52:01] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm really finding my way now to where yeah I can really be happy about the holidays

[00:52:06] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah there are two parts to it there's the movies there's die hard which yeah it isn't really a

[00:52:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Christmas story movie but I really feel it is a holiday season movie might be the best way to put

[00:52:18] [SPEAKER_01]: it because it's set there there's a lot of lines being thrown around and I'll tie the holidays

[00:52:23] [SPEAKER_01]: it's it's become a tradition to watch it over the holidays it really has second of course

[00:52:28] [SPEAKER_01]: is the pure masterpiece that is white Christmas uh Erling Berlin genius on all the music

[00:52:37] [SPEAKER_01]: which my favorite piece of music in there is actually not the main line it is actually this one

[00:52:46] [SPEAKER_01]: the song that they're doing when the general comes in for the big surprise party

[00:52:50] [SPEAKER_01]: will follow the old man wherever he wants to go long as he wants to go opposite to the foe

[00:52:58] [SPEAKER_01]: serious emotions when I watch that it's been that way since as long as I can remember not

[00:53:02] [SPEAKER_01]: just after Mary no I hope you all have a fantastic holidays happy new year and live longer prosper

[00:53:12] [SPEAKER_07]: I can't remember the last time I saw that movie but man Mark singing that I was like oh yeah

[00:53:18] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah that is a good song I always forget that's how it starts I remember the last time I

[00:53:20] [SPEAKER_05]: watched it it was about five days ago I was watching it didn't finish the whole thing

[00:53:24] [SPEAKER_05]: made about halfway but my kids were like dad why are you watching these old movies

[00:53:30] [SPEAKER_05]: but I did just hang up a star we're supposed to in my son's room which features Peter Cushing

[00:53:35] [SPEAKER_05]: and Alec Guinness so jokes on you kid got him that's right take that child

[00:53:42] [SPEAKER_06]: all right well then let's go ahead and get the rest of Onitra's Christmas favorites from our

[00:53:49] [SPEAKER_06]: recent discussion with her some of the folks in our discord server have been like binging

[00:53:58] [SPEAKER_06]: Dan Janot Christmas movies rating them against each other putting all their favorite parts in

[00:54:03] [SPEAKER_06]: the chat that kind of a thing so they don't have to be specifically Dan's movies but two or three

[00:54:09] [SPEAKER_10]: of your favorite Christmas movies please Onitra so my favorite one is I hope I have the title

[00:54:17] [SPEAKER_10]: right it's the Christmas story when we're like he gets the BB gun oh yeah

[00:54:26] [SPEAKER_10]: it's so great um die hard for my other one yeah it is a Christmas movie and I love it

[00:54:32] [SPEAKER_10]: I think Grimlins is a Christmas movie too didn't they wasn't that very Christmas?

[00:54:36] [SPEAKER_05]: That is my number one Christmas movie which uh I will be or will have revealed on on our show yes

[00:54:44] [SPEAKER_05]: very cool so great that's what that movie is insane spoiler alert right spoiler alert yeah

[00:54:54] [SPEAKER_05]: I am loving all the die hard love people are getting we already have the right crowd and

[00:54:58] [SPEAKER_06]: as our listeners and now we have a very special non-holiday guest just to give you a little bit

[00:55:06] [SPEAKER_06]: of a break if you're one of those people that is like are we only gonna talk about Christmas

[00:55:11] [SPEAKER_06]: and holiday stuff here the answer is no we have a very special guest here that Cameron

[00:55:17] [SPEAKER_06]: was able to get a little bit of a conversation going with while he stood in line to meet Rebecca

[00:55:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Romain Una Chin Riley hey everybody so I'm in line waiting to get Rebecca Romain's autograph

[00:55:29] [SPEAKER_05]: on our ad Astra poster and I've got some fans here hi sir have you watched Strange New World

[00:55:34] [SPEAKER_03]: yes I've seen Strange New Worlds uh I was actually in an episode of Strange New Worlds

[00:55:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I portrayed commander Ransom oh I didn't quite recognize you I'm sorry that's okay my name is

[00:55:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Jerry O'Connell I'm in I'm in um lower deck Jerry Mcdonald Jerry O'Connell O'Connell O'Connell

[00:55:55] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm O'Connell I played Ransom I'm a number one same as my wife Rebecca Romain that's a Star Trek

[00:56:01] [SPEAKER_03]: show too right lower deck yes it's the animated series uh some would say it's the funniest

[00:56:08] [SPEAKER_03]: sharpest Star Trek show on currently you and a couple other people yeah some big stars

[00:56:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Tawny Newsom Jack Quaid Eugene Cordero oh they were on Strange New Worlds weren't they

[00:56:21] [SPEAKER_03]: they were on Strange New Worlds so was I my character Ransom was on Strange New Worlds

[00:56:26] [SPEAKER_05]: and I have to say your line of uh numero Una being the hottest commander was amazing

[00:56:31] [SPEAKER_03]: and very well delivered for everyone listening this was a joke we're uh we're we're ex friends

[00:56:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not a lot it's not Twitter anymore it's ex friends right yeah we're we're friends on ex

[00:56:42] [SPEAKER_03]: and uh we're here at uh Rose City Comic Con everybody

[00:56:46] [SPEAKER_03]: exciting thank you for talking with us thanks man I love your feed

[00:56:50] [SPEAKER_05]: I thought he was breaking up with me there for a second

[00:56:54] [SPEAKER_06]: ex friends I gotta be honest the first time I heard that clip I was like Cameron what are

[00:56:59] [SPEAKER_06]: you doing like like it's a good bit but like could you keep it going it sounds like he could

[00:57:03] [SPEAKER_06]: mad at you but man what a great great little snippet of an interview really well done Cameron

[00:57:11] [SPEAKER_05]: he was just a pleasure he was just hanging out in the crowd taking selfies

[00:57:16] [SPEAKER_05]: having chats signing things uh yeah complimented our feed there at the end he likes following us on

[00:57:24] [SPEAKER_05]: it's twitter jerry I'm sorry I'm gonna be there but yeah and then yeah very game to do all that

[00:57:30] [SPEAKER_05]: and uh he was a great guy great guy if you're ever uh get to go see Rebecca Romain at a comic

[00:57:36] [SPEAKER_05]: con I hope Jerry is there to keep you entertained in line very clear why Anson Mount is such a

[00:57:42] [SPEAKER_06]: big fan of Jerry I mean that that sounded like it was a ton of fun yeah speaking of a ton of fun

[00:57:49] [SPEAKER_06]: let's go ahead and hear the last part of our very fun interview with Miss Christina Chong

[00:57:58] [SPEAKER_05]: jumping back in the season two Christina how when did you learn that you would be getting

[00:58:03] [SPEAKER_05]: your whole standalone episode and like what was your reaction to learning about tomorrow and tomorrow

[00:58:08] [SPEAKER_17]: and tomorrow so I knew actually when I arrived in Toronto Chris Fisher um literally talked me

[00:58:16] [SPEAKER_17]: through a few of the first he said yeah it's you've got a two-hander with poor Wesley

[00:58:21] [SPEAKER_17]: I was like oh amazing so cool and and he was there was talk about it being shot in New York

[00:58:28] [SPEAKER_17]: originally but then it was too much with like the covid steel and everything so that's why they

[00:58:32] [SPEAKER_17]: they made it stay in Toronto and better as well because I think it's much better in Toronto

[00:58:37] [SPEAKER_17]: but I found that out but what I didn't realize when I actually got the script that I'm in

[00:58:43] [SPEAKER_17]: every single scene of the episode like there's not one scene that I've got off I was like oh

[00:58:49] [SPEAKER_17]: wow I've never done this before okay um so that was a really good challenge for me in not just

[00:58:55] [SPEAKER_17]: preparation because when you're already in to a season I'm filming episode two which was also

[00:59:03] [SPEAKER_17]: not huge for me but I had a lot of you know a bit of fodder in there so it wasn't

[00:59:07] [SPEAKER_17]: so I then had to prepare that really quickly and as I was going but yeah

[00:59:16] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah it was it was an amazing opportunity so speaking of tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow

[00:59:25] [SPEAKER_06]: was it a kind of a relief to be able to just sort of wear street clothes or was it harder to find

[00:59:32] [SPEAKER_06]: your character when you're not in uniform we've heard for example anson mount says he's an outside

[00:59:37] [SPEAKER_06]: in actor so once he's in costume he's got it locked down oh interesting didn't know that

[00:59:43] [SPEAKER_17]: about anson okay um no no I'm the other way around I'm an inside out I think so I'm going to be honest

[00:59:53] [SPEAKER_17]: I found that episode quite hard because I I didn't know where to pitch it and where to pitch what

[01:00:00] [SPEAKER_17]: because Lance has been so like you know this I was like I don't know how far do we go

[01:00:06] [SPEAKER_17]: and we'd had we filmed the last scene first I feel like feeling like we did

[01:00:11] [SPEAKER_17]: mm-hmm like we filmed the malsine first on that enterprise with yeah because that was the first

[01:00:19] [SPEAKER_17]: time I thought yeah because I was first time I saw Paul that season yeah I think it was then

[01:00:24] [SPEAKER_17]: and he did his bit on on the iPad in the same room but just in a corner so we were doing it

[01:00:31] [SPEAKER_17]: same time that's nice brilliant yeah it was tricky but the costumes for me I guess helped a little bit

[01:00:43] [SPEAKER_17]: except that it was just freaking freezing so like and out in Toronto it was like minus 17 or

[01:00:49] [SPEAKER_17]: something ridiculous but feels like minus 23 or something so yeah I had to really keep track

[01:01:00] [SPEAKER_17]: with Amanda the director of where I was going and when and how much and it was quite

[01:01:07] [SPEAKER_17]: there were a few scenes where I was like I'm not getting this I'm not like take tank 20

[01:01:15] [SPEAKER_05]: sorry how many takes did it take for that last scene where you you break down because

[01:01:20] [SPEAKER_05]: I mean I think we can all attest that as a highlight of season two I have my memory

[01:01:25] [SPEAKER_17]: says that that the take they used I mean of the close-up because obviously work wide and then come in

[01:01:33] [SPEAKER_17]: and the performance is in the close-up really so of that I would say I think it I have a feeling

[01:01:38] [SPEAKER_17]: it was the fourth third take I think it was the third take did you feel like you had nailed it did

[01:01:43] [SPEAKER_05]: you feel proud of that moment because it's incredible Christina yeah yeah I was like that's

[01:01:48] [SPEAKER_17]: as good as it gets getting by guys it's understandable so yeah Lon and Kirk's relationship

[01:01:55] [SPEAKER_07]: is one of the running through lines throughout season two did the showrunners give you and

[01:02:00] [SPEAKER_07]: Paul Wesley time to like hang out and work on building the chemistry the on-screen chemistry or

[01:02:06] [SPEAKER_17]: no it was just it was just good luck really that we had chemistry so my we have the same

[01:02:13] [SPEAKER_17]: acting coach and we worked with the same acting coach for this episode actually so she's like oh go

[01:02:19] [SPEAKER_17]: and have dinner with Paul before you do your first scene no was yeah no but before the kissing scene

[01:02:26] [SPEAKER_17]: I think we shot the crying scene first and then the next day was like the kissing scene or something

[01:02:31] [SPEAKER_17]: like that or it was the same day something I know anyway so I was like no I don't need to

[01:02:37] [SPEAKER_17]: it'll be fine I'll just like wing it and fake it and and she's like no trust me I think you

[01:02:41] [SPEAKER_17]: will really get on so go and have dinner I was like mmm and she kept saying it throughout the whole

[01:02:47] [SPEAKER_17]: call I was like okay I get I get it I get it you're pretty good with him but I kept saying no no

[01:02:52] [SPEAKER_17]: she's well up to you up to you but I'm telling you I think you should and so the call ended

[01:02:57] [SPEAKER_17]: and I was like oh okay I'll just take Paul do you want to go for dinner and I was like yeah

[01:03:02] [SPEAKER_17]: yeah sure so we met at Soho house in Toronto and we just got on really well we both had our

[01:03:08] [SPEAKER_17]: dogs are both service dogs was talking about our dogs most of the time and we were both going through

[01:03:14] [SPEAKER_17]: similar things romantically as well so that kind of we went deep quickly so yeah so it was kind of

[01:03:26] [SPEAKER_17]: synchronous I guess that we just had that chemistry as friends and I'm also really really glad

[01:03:35] [SPEAKER_17]: because that episode was very hard work to film we didn't have the luxury of we finished when we

[01:03:43] [SPEAKER_17]: finished it was like we have to finish when the daylight ends you know and it's in winter so

[01:03:48] [SPEAKER_17]: so yeah it was a lot of fun with him and lots of laughs and yeah excellent you have another

[01:03:55] [SPEAKER_07]: call here about getting us into subspace rhapsody here is Ashlyn hi Christina big fan my name is

[01:04:04] [SPEAKER_14]: Ashlyn and as a fellow singer I am wondering how long the musical episode took you compared to

[01:04:11] [SPEAKER_14]: the other episodes that you did for strange new worlds did it take you a long time to learn the

[01:04:16] [SPEAKER_14]: music was there a lot of choreography and things I'm just wondering about that whole process

[01:04:22] [SPEAKER_17]: and what it was like for you thank you thank you for that question so I think it was roughly

[01:04:30] [SPEAKER_17]: around three weeks before we filmed the episode that we got our songs that we all started getting

[01:04:34] [SPEAKER_17]: our songs so then we would go in at any spare moment we had we would go in with a vocal coach

[01:04:41] [SPEAKER_17]: or the choreographer Roberto and we would go in and work just in if we had a gap between scenes

[01:04:48] [SPEAKER_17]: you know we ring we go in costume and just go and just and they were always around and we

[01:04:54] [SPEAKER_17]: just had to go find them whenever we had like a half an hour break or whatever

[01:04:58] [SPEAKER_17]: and then we also had to come in on weekends and we had to rehearse the dancers and the stunts

[01:05:05] [SPEAKER_17]: and songs at weekends as well we also then had to record them so we only had because we had to

[01:05:10] [SPEAKER_17]: record before we filmed so we only had really two weeks to work on the songs maybe two three

[01:05:17] [SPEAKER_17]: two and a half weeks before we then had to start recording them as studio and that was

[01:05:21] [SPEAKER_17]: for me that I knew this would happen but I can't remember if it's actually in the show or

[01:05:26] [SPEAKER_17]: not if they use that tape I don't think they did but it might be on the cd but when I sung

[01:05:33] [SPEAKER_17]: the song the whole way through I knew because it was such a big thing for me that my whole

[01:05:38] [SPEAKER_17]: career would come 360 and the stature gave me this gift I knew that when I was when I would

[01:05:43] [SPEAKER_17]: would be in the studio recording this that that last moment would make me cry

[01:05:49] [SPEAKER_17]: and it did and there is that and it's real that that thing is like me just breaking down in that

[01:05:55] [SPEAKER_17]: studio because it was such a big thing for me to be able to finally live out a dream you know

[01:06:03] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah that's really cool very cool so outside of how would that feel if you had to pick a favorite

[01:06:14] [SPEAKER_06]: song from the musical what would you pick

[01:06:25] [SPEAKER_06]: I think that's Tom Poulchy's favorite too

[01:06:32] [SPEAKER_07]: just this song I love it oh yeah it's so good very good all right I'm gonna try to squeeze a quick

[01:06:38] [SPEAKER_05]: question in actually because I have to know I've got you here Christy I I know you were in a deleted

[01:06:43] [SPEAKER_05]: scene of the Force Awakens Star Wars I don't know if there's any more you can tell us that you

[01:06:49] [SPEAKER_05]: you haven't spoken about before maybe just what the audition process was like for that

[01:06:53] [SPEAKER_17]: I went because it was like because it's also top secret especially back then it was as well

[01:06:58] [SPEAKER_17]: now but they were all like dummy signs I I just remember it being red paper and being

[01:07:04] [SPEAKER_17]: loads of people that I knew were there and we just there was no it was like a I can't even

[01:07:10] [SPEAKER_17]: remember the name of what it was but it was everyone got the same sides

[01:07:14] [SPEAKER_17]: no matter what we were auditioning for kind of thing so yeah so that I think I only went in once

[01:07:20] [SPEAKER_17]: and then they offered me oh but it was a tiny role it's like a glorified extra you know but

[01:07:24] [SPEAKER_17]: I still got to work with JJ I was on the set the first day of the shoot working with JJ

[01:07:29] [SPEAKER_17]: Brands and had to like cry and break down like for real in just like that like you know he's

[01:07:36] [SPEAKER_17]: right now can you just cry as if you've just lost your son I was like oh wow yeah

[01:07:44] [SPEAKER_17]: sure JJ Abrams yeah and then I had to re-film those scenes so it was out in Abu Dhabi in the

[01:07:53] [SPEAKER_17]: middle of the desert and then I had to re-film them in London at Pinewood Studios so got paid

[01:07:58] [SPEAKER_17]: twice for that job I can't complain yeah get paid twice and you're not even in the movie

[01:08:04] [SPEAKER_10]: like that's that's a high bar I get residuals okay residuals what that's brilliant really

[01:08:10] [SPEAKER_07]: I'm gonna go stream it right now exactly so I know it's very early on in the production

[01:08:17] [SPEAKER_07]: do you have any uh one word teases you would give for season three that won't tell won't spoil anything

[01:08:24] [SPEAKER_07]: but just one thing where when we see it uh like last season Bill Wolkoff gave us go and when

[01:08:30] [SPEAKER_07]: we saw Spock sit down in the chair and give the war border we saw and said oh that's what he meant by go

[01:08:36] [SPEAKER_07]: do you have any uh one word teases for season three

[01:08:46] [SPEAKER_05]: perfect perfect thank you love it I love it oh man well I will be listening for fucky for Christmas

[01:08:53] [SPEAKER_05]: and future Christmas movies I hope it makes some appearances oh man yeah I forget you for Christmas

[01:09:00] [SPEAKER_17]: for those who've got children and for those for future Hallmark movies yeah yeah exactly

[01:09:06] [SPEAKER_07]: keep your ears open Dan Janot yeah Dan Janot and your Hallmark movies yes thank you very much

[01:09:15] [SPEAKER_07]: for joining us today we really appreciate it and we hope you have a very merry Christmas

[01:09:20] [SPEAKER_17]: you too guys thank you so much pleasure as always happy filming yeah good luck with season three

[01:09:26] [SPEAKER_16]: yay thanks guys take care bye bye bye bye I don't know if we can classify that as a one word tease

[01:09:36] [SPEAKER_05]: but still very exciting nonetheless some sort of big reveal what do we think it could be

[01:09:43] [SPEAKER_06]: I gotta say like I feel like the NDAs may be stronger for season three than they were for

[01:09:50] [SPEAKER_06]: season two like everyone that we ask is really has a moment and and you can see this look on their

[01:09:56] [SPEAKER_06]: face like oh wow what can I even say but yeah I mean it sounds like the drama and maybe maybe you

[01:10:03] [SPEAKER_06]: guys maybe we'll get a mid-season two-parter here like any chance of a cliffhanger that we

[01:10:08] [SPEAKER_06]: get resolved the following week instead of a year and a half later that'd be pretty cool mm-hmm

[01:10:14] [SPEAKER_06]: I am totally here for it you know who else is totally here for us is our friend and caller Newman

[01:10:25] [SPEAKER_08]: hi open pike night it's Newman the space hippie from the movies for days podcast

[01:10:28] [SPEAKER_08]: you may or may not know that I am a big fan of horror films a big fan of holiday horror films

[01:10:34] [SPEAKER_08]: and so one of my absolute favorites that I would love to recommend to you is the 2015

[01:10:39] [SPEAKER_08]: Canadian Horror Anthology a Christmas horror story this movie has absolutely everything

[01:10:47] [SPEAKER_08]: you could want in a Christmas horror anthology you've got santa fighting a bunch of killer elves

[01:10:53] [SPEAKER_08]: who have become zombified and are attacking the north pole you've got true crime filmmakers

[01:10:59] [SPEAKER_08]: going into a haunted place to investigate ghost stories and getting more than they bargained

[01:11:03] [SPEAKER_08]: for you've got changelings you've got evil crampus destroying an entire family in the middle

[01:11:10] [SPEAKER_08]: of the woods and you've got it all tied together by a DJ in the fictional town of Bailey Downs

[01:11:17] [SPEAKER_08]: connecting everything because everyone is listening to this DJ as he rattles off his love of Christmas

[01:11:23] [SPEAKER_08]: and plays Christmas hits all night and slowly gets clearly progressively drunker as the night

[01:11:29] [SPEAKER_08]: goes on why am I recommending this to you a Star Trek podcast well maybe you heard me when I

[01:11:36] [SPEAKER_08]: said this is a Canadian horror film who did they get to play the drunk radio DJ of Bailey Downs

[01:11:43] [SPEAKER_08]: not yes my friends William Shatner is in this entire movie and he is hysterical this banger

[01:11:51] [SPEAKER_08]: is available on to be for free I highly recommend it I hope you guys have wonderful holidays

[01:11:58] [SPEAKER_08]: thanks again for a wonderful year of podcasting Newman the space hippie out I have to assume

[01:12:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Cameron is about to run right out and find all of those and check them out well actually Newman

[01:12:09] [SPEAKER_05]: just so you know that your voice does not just speak into the void and mean nothing I did

[01:12:15] [SPEAKER_05]: immediately run out and look for that not immediately that the next night after I listened

[01:12:19] [SPEAKER_05]: to your clip a couple days ago I found it on to be and I watched it and made about halfway

[01:12:24] [SPEAKER_05]: through I know this is a running theme I'm a busy guy I've got kids I'm going to finish it

[01:12:28] [SPEAKER_05]: I've got the spot marked this movie is incredible yes William Shatner is in fine form as the drunk DJ

[01:12:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Santa and zombie elves it's it's really good so far I can't wait to finish it and I also have to say

[01:12:43] [SPEAKER_05]: it's not just William Shatner is not our only Star Trek connection

[01:12:47] [SPEAKER_05]: Admiral April himself Adrian Holmes is also in the movie

[01:12:52] [SPEAKER_05]: as one of the main characters and he is fantastic as you would expect from Adrian Holmes so

[01:12:59] [SPEAKER_05]: really good stuff thank you for the suggestion that's amazing that's a great trek connection I

[01:13:06] [SPEAKER_06]: honestly didn't even think to do that because I don't plan very well but let's go ahead and

[01:13:13] [SPEAKER_19]: hear from our next caller plattium three hey there open pike night this is plattium three

[01:13:19] [SPEAKER_19]: calling in with my christmas time hits shits and misses first off hits any christmas movie where

[01:13:27] [SPEAKER_19]: danjanette gets to have an english accent or a french accent and play a snooty rich guy they are great

[01:13:34] [SPEAKER_19]: and watching him play the exact opposite of sam kerke is hilarious shits oh shit forgot he was

[01:13:42] [SPEAKER_19]: just a regular old american video game producer dude and my favorite one of his movies ghosts

[01:13:46] [SPEAKER_19]: of christmas past you know the one all about the girl that ghosted a bunch of guys with her

[01:13:51] [SPEAKER_19]: online dating um but fell for him the pac-man fan in the end damn he was actually greatly sam

[01:13:58] [SPEAKER_19]: kirkesh and that one oh misses hey don't miss bethanie joe lenz and christoph are pola I believe

[01:14:06] [SPEAKER_19]: has name um some of my favorite wbcw stars of decades past along with star trek alum

[01:14:13] [SPEAKER_19]: jonathan freaks and robert picardo in this year's a biltmore christmas on the hallmark channel

[01:14:18] [SPEAKER_19]: freaks is in it quite a bit and picardo only has about 30 seconds of screen time

[01:14:23] [SPEAKER_19]: but it was filmed at the bill more house in one of my favorite cities ashville north carolina

[01:14:29] [SPEAKER_05]: happy holidays merry christmas all i've been to the biltmore house that's also uh where they filmed

[01:14:35] [SPEAKER_05]: also where they filmed gary oldman's mansion from hannibal I believe I think so yeah when

[01:14:40] [SPEAKER_05]: you do the hannibal built more christmas crossover I personally haven't been there but

[01:14:47] [SPEAKER_06]: there are very few callers that can say they've built more of the foundation of open pike night

[01:14:54] [SPEAKER_06]: than our next caller our first caller peter 2023 is almost over where did the year go

[01:15:03] [SPEAKER_18]: your discussion questions for this episode jogged my memories of christmas holidays

[01:15:07] [SPEAKER_18]: during my childhood my favorite christmas movie is frank havers it's a wonderful life

[01:15:12] [SPEAKER_18]: which starred james steward as george bailey and donna reid as mary bailey I grew up during the

[01:15:18] [SPEAKER_18]: 1980s and it was around that time this movie started to be repeatedly broadcast during the holiday

[01:15:25] [SPEAKER_18]: season and had multiple releases on vhs and dbd this was because republic pictures did not renew

[01:15:31] [SPEAKER_18]: its copyright of the film in the mid 70s the film's themes of self-sacrifice and one person

[01:15:37] [SPEAKER_18]: making a difference which have been covered on star trek are timeless I'm also reminded of the

[01:15:44] [SPEAKER_18]: christmas episodes of tv shows I watched a lot of reruns of 60s and 70s tv shows growing up

[01:15:51] [SPEAKER_18]: and recall the christmas episodes for shows like the brady bunch gilkins islands and the flint

[01:15:56] [SPEAKER_18]: stones as a young child I wonder why we only saw those episodes during the holidays and not the rest

[01:16:03] [SPEAKER_18]: of the year congratulations on another successful year of open pike night and I look forward to what

[01:16:09] [SPEAKER_18]: open pike night has in store for 2024 I would like to wish john jesse Cameron and all your

[01:16:17] [SPEAKER_06]: listeners a happy holiday season thank you so much peter that is really cool and I have to be

[01:16:24] [SPEAKER_06]: honest it was hard for me not to pick christmas episodes of tv as well my wife is a huge christmas

[01:16:31] [SPEAKER_06]: episode aficionado I am not exaggerating that last night we literally watched a benihana christmas

[01:16:38] [SPEAKER_06]: which is one of the I believe it's season three christmas episode from the american office and

[01:16:43] [SPEAKER_05]: directed by herald ramus in case you didn't know very nice yeah yeah I'm glad you brought up the

[01:16:49] [SPEAKER_05]: tv christmas specials those are definitely iconic in their own right for sure now of course

[01:16:55] [SPEAKER_06]: we can't talk this much about christmas movies and hear this much about danjanot without hearing

[01:17:02] [SPEAKER_06]: from danjanot you guys we got danjanot on our christmas special take it away john hello open

[01:17:10] [SPEAKER_04]: pike night this is danjanot calling in from uh from ireland actually where I am shooting on

[01:17:16] [SPEAKER_04]: location I just wanted to send my season's greetings and uh also to share with you all my top five

[01:17:26] [SPEAKER_04]: christmas move up five christmas films starting with elf I mean come on classic instant classic

[01:17:36] [SPEAKER_04]: wasn't it as soon as it came out will ferrell ed asner just so joyful so silly so funny uh next

[01:17:43] [SPEAKER_04]: up scrooge a little bit more cynical perhaps than elf but it's got its heart in the right place

[01:17:50] [SPEAKER_04]: featuring bill murray and everyone's favorite lanthanite carol kane next up the 1964

[01:17:59] [SPEAKER_04]: claymation spectacular rudolf the red nose reindeer you might think if you haven't seen it lately

[01:18:05] [SPEAKER_04]: that rudolf the red nose reindeer is a sort of straightforward old timey heartwarming christmas

[01:18:12] [SPEAKER_04]: tale you should watch it again it is bizarre it is weird it is inexplicable and it is sending a lot

[01:18:22] [SPEAKER_04]: of weird messages to children highly recommended next up batman returns the snow falling on

[01:18:31] [SPEAKER_04]: gotham city while the penguin watches malevolently from the sewers that's christmas for me

[01:18:39] [SPEAKER_04]: and finally um the movie that I think I'm gonna watch this year with my boy uh a perennial favorite

[01:18:45] [SPEAKER_04]: a muppet christmas carol I mean michael kane gonzo kermit miss piggy what a gift what a gift

[01:18:55] [SPEAKER_04]: uh so those are my top five christmas movies and I just want to say merry christmas

[01:19:01] [SPEAKER_04]: to all of you good folks who make open pike night and all of the fans who call in and really

[01:19:08] [SPEAKER_04]: make to show what it is uh I hope you all have an amazing holiday season and I can tell you

[01:19:15] [SPEAKER_04]: I already know what my christmas gift is for myself this year my gift is that I get to go back

[01:19:20] [SPEAKER_04]: to work in a couple of days um working on season three of star trek strange new worlds we are

[01:19:26] [SPEAKER_04]: all so happy that we get to get back to work on this and that soon we will be bringing you

[01:19:32] [SPEAKER_04]: an all new season so merry christmas and take care everybody dan out you guys is your heart not

[01:19:42] [SPEAKER_05]: just when I don't think I can fall more in love with the man that was amazing

[01:19:48] [SPEAKER_06]: every time he's kind he's professional he knows how to tease the next season he's

[01:19:53] [SPEAKER_06]: everything you want in a kirk and I couldn't help myself last night I queued up operation annihilate

[01:20:01] [SPEAKER_06]: and I'm really upset to know that sam kirk's story ends that way but I'm so glad that we get

[01:20:10] [SPEAKER_06]: what probably 15 seasons of strange new worlds before that happens easily easily so that

[01:20:14] [SPEAKER_06]: we can really really feel that loss the same way jim kirk does 100 percent also dan thank you

[01:20:22] [SPEAKER_05]: so much for mentioning batman returns I do always forget it's a christmas movie until I watch it

[01:20:28] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm looking at my list and we'll see if things swap around by the time we get to it

[01:20:32] [SPEAKER_05]: but yeah great less dan great less of course and well Cameron you are basically out of time

[01:20:39] [SPEAKER_06]: because it is time to share our top five christmas movies let's have producer john go first this

[01:20:46] [SPEAKER_07]: time all right well I am going to agree with Dan Scrooge is in my top five I've enjoyed that since

[01:20:53] [SPEAKER_07]: I saw it when I was a little kid and did not get so many of the jokes that I get now when I when I

[01:20:59] [SPEAKER_07]: go back and watch it uh kiss kiss bang bang uh from Shane black is an excellent christmas

[01:21:06] [SPEAKER_07]: movie and Shane black loves christmas movies I mean iron man three is a christmas movie but

[01:21:12] [SPEAKER_07]: I think his pinnacle of them is is kiss kiss bang bang I this one's a little odd but I really like

[01:21:21] [SPEAKER_07]: white christmas the black mirror episode with john ham oh yeah it's like I know it's not

[01:21:28] [SPEAKER_07]: technically like a heartwarming christmas movie but like I love that as that I watch that at

[01:21:34] [SPEAKER_07]: christmas every year not on christmas but I just watched it a couple days ago because like yeah

[01:21:39] [SPEAKER_07]: it is it really captures the feeling of the not great stuff that christmas can bring

[01:21:47] [SPEAKER_07]: I really like miracle on 34th street um the original I I I watched it not not every year

[01:21:56] [SPEAKER_07]: but I watched it a couple years ago and forgot it's like oh yeah this is this is a good solid

[01:22:02] [SPEAKER_07]: christmas movie there's a reason classics are classics and then ah man with my final I'm gonna

[01:22:12] [SPEAKER_07]: have to go I gotta go with the hard I gotta agree with our collars not to yeah gremlins is so good

[01:22:18] [SPEAKER_06]: but I gotta go with the hard miracle on 34th street that's the one with john hamlin from

[01:22:22] [SPEAKER_06]: Jurassic Park correct yeah that's right yeah all right Cameron did you shuffle and what do you

[01:22:32] [SPEAKER_05]: say Christmas with the cranks jingle all the way oh wait no wrong list sorry

[01:22:40] [SPEAKER_05]: oh right uh yeah number one gremlins my favorite christmas movie that movie is insane like I said

[01:22:47] [SPEAKER_05]: but in such a good way just watch the background when when the every time the dad calls there's

[01:22:52] [SPEAKER_05]: like time travel happening in the background of those scenes it's incredible yes there is

[01:22:57] [SPEAKER_05]: uh vb kates's whole speech about finding out there's no santa kids close your ears

[01:23:04] [SPEAKER_05]: one of the funniest things ever put to film uh gremlins is amazing that the fact that the mom

[01:23:09] [SPEAKER_07]: takes out more gremlins than anybody and nobody ever gives them their respect she's a nurse

[01:23:14] [SPEAKER_05]: so gremlins number two I had the theme in my music top five gotta have home alone

[01:23:20] [SPEAKER_05]: I just watched it again the other day it's it's so good all the looney tune slapstick humor

[01:23:26] [SPEAKER_05]: works because of the heart of that film because of the scene between him and the old man in the church

[01:23:32] [SPEAKER_05]: like without that scene the movie falls apart but with it it's christmas gold uh christmas vacation

[01:23:38] [SPEAKER_05]: it's hard to beat again we're just watching it the other day I was thinking like oh what would a

[01:23:43] [SPEAKER_05]: new version of this be can't could you make like another just domestic christmas movie about like

[01:23:48] [SPEAKER_05]: all the trials and tribulations of family christmas no nothing about santa and your dad's

[01:23:53] [SPEAKER_05]: not becoming santa no big trips or anything just the normal everyday christmas stuff

[01:23:57] [SPEAKER_05]: and you couldn't really this movie tackled it all and it still holds up it's so good

[01:24:03] [SPEAKER_05]: everything about it and as you get older you you relate more and more with the neighbors next door

[01:24:10] [SPEAKER_05]: number four so this is like die hard batman returns I'm gonna finally settle on scrooge

[01:24:18] [SPEAKER_05]: is that you need that classic uh christmas carol story

[01:24:23] [SPEAKER_05]: muppets christmas carols very close but for me scrooge takes it and then my number five

[01:24:28] [SPEAKER_05]: newman this one's for you I love a good holiday horror movie too and the one that made my list

[01:24:32] [SPEAKER_05]: is the jack frost horror film I don't care what you say yeah I love every gd minute of that

[01:24:38] [SPEAKER_05]: movie it is so silly and goofy it knows exactly what it wants to be and nails it

[01:24:44] [SPEAKER_07]: what not gary busey's the gingerbread man no but now I'm gonna go watch it sorry ginger dead man

[01:24:53] [SPEAKER_06]: sorry oh oh that's right yeah that's right I think I'm the opposite of Cameron when I hear gary busey

[01:24:58] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm like I probably won't watch that but he's definitely an acquired taste and the taste is

[01:25:04] [SPEAKER_06]: teeth all right so this is the only list that I actually managed to put in order my christmas

[01:25:09] [SPEAKER_06]: songs it was just so hard to do but this one I actually buckled down and I numbered them so I'm

[01:25:15] [SPEAKER_06]: gonna start with number five bad santa the first time that I saw bad santa I was maybe slightly

[01:25:21] [SPEAKER_06]: too young um but as again as you get older you appreciate things differently and there are just

[01:25:28] [SPEAKER_06]: so many one-liners in that movie and like sitcom level absurdity to some of the situations

[01:25:34] [SPEAKER_06]: I really can't get over it number four for me is going to be the frosty the snowman tv christmas

[01:25:41] [SPEAKER_06]: movie animated special that one is I think it's probably one of the first that I saw as a kid

[01:25:49] [SPEAKER_06]: and it just it stuck with me and the vocals are really good like frosty's voice is is very charming

[01:25:56] [SPEAKER_06]: and I really really like it number three Cameron I'm gonna agree with you christmas vacation

[01:26:03] [SPEAKER_06]: you said so much good about it so I'll just echo all of that Todd and Margot are two of my favorite

[01:26:09] [SPEAKER_06]: movie characters ever and they're really not even main characters in that movie doubling up again

[01:26:16] [SPEAKER_06]: for number two the first home alone yes the second home alone movie you know fun but it's it's a

[01:26:22] [SPEAKER_06]: carbon copy of the first movie and the first movie got so much right that it's really difficult

[01:26:27] [SPEAKER_06]: for me to argue with that that song from the movie is on one of the playlists in my house so I've

[01:26:33] [SPEAKER_06]: probably heard it 16 times already this year and I am not sick of it and of course at number one
