[00:00:08] [SPEAKER_07]: Is this thing on?

[00:00:11] [SPEAKER_07]: Hello, hello.

[00:00:26] [SPEAKER_07]: Welcome to Open Pike Night, the podcast where your personal logs are the prime directive.

[00:00:31] [SPEAKER_07]: I'm your host John T. Boulds here tonight with some amazing callers on stage to discuss

[00:00:36] [SPEAKER_07]: the original series episode, What Are Little Girls Made Of?

[00:00:40] [SPEAKER_07]: A title that may be a little confusing when you really get down to it but I am of

[00:00:47] [SPEAKER_07]: my co-hosts, the man who will absolutely break off that shape stalactite just because, just

[00:00:54] [SPEAKER_07]: because it's funny, Jesse Bailey.

[00:00:57] [SPEAKER_09]: It's also the kind of episode title that when you Google you're like, should I Google

[00:01:01] [SPEAKER_09]: this in a different browser that other people in my house aren't using?

[00:01:07] [SPEAKER_09]: Like no, no, I can explain it, I can explain it and to be clear if a stalactite

[00:01:11] [SPEAKER_09]: lasts for more than four hours you need to seek medical attention immediately.

[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_07]: Yes you do, yes you do.

[00:01:17] [SPEAKER_07]: And the man who I've known so long, I knew him back when he was just a pile of green

[00:01:23] [SPEAKER_07]: foam and moss, Cameron Harrison, host of Green Shirt and who is directed The Next

[00:01:28] [SPEAKER_07]: Generation.

[00:01:31] [SPEAKER_07]: And tonight like we said, we are here to discuss an original series episode that

[00:01:37] [SPEAKER_07]: we feel ties into Strange New Worlds.

[00:01:40] [SPEAKER_07]: Not only do we have several of our main cast and crew members with Spock, Uhura,

[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_07]: Chappell, I mean one could even argue Jim Kirk, but this is the episode dealing with

[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_07]: Chappell's fiance Roger Corby who we do know has been cast and already has filmed

[00:01:59] [SPEAKER_07]: for season three of Strange New Worlds.

[00:02:01] [SPEAKER_07]: So we figured let's go back and visit the episode that introduced us to Roger

[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_07]: Corby and gave us, I believe more information on Christine Chappell than any other

[00:02:12] [SPEAKER_07]: episode in the original series.

[00:02:14] [SPEAKER_09]: And I got to say John, good call because I think when we first talked about this

[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_09]: you said isn't this a Sam Kirk episode?

[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_09]: I was like I don't think it is but we get all of the information relevant to Sam

[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_09]: Kirk in this episode.

[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_09]: Yes we do, yeah.

[00:02:32] [SPEAKER_09]: And it's way more development than he ever gets on the actual show.

[00:02:37] [SPEAKER_09]: That was a really good call and I'm actually pretty glad that Dan Janat who

[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_09]: plays Sam Kirk in Strange New Worlds got such a blank slate to work with because I

[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_09]: mean come on we've all fallen in love with Sam Kirk at this point.

[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_07]: And apparently his wife and three children are going to love him at some

[00:02:56] [SPEAKER_07]: point in the future too from where we've seen him in Strange New Worlds.

[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_07]: I've got comments on that but I will wait till we get there.

[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_07]: Let's start off a conversation.

[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_07]: This was my first time ever seeing this episode.

[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_07]: I have talked before how I'm not a huge like diehard TOS watcher but I've got to

[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_07]: say having watched this episode this might be of all the TOS episodes I've

[00:03:22] [SPEAKER_07]: seen this might be my favorite and not necessarily for the story.

[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_07]: But man they shot the hell out of this episode and technically this episode

[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_07]: is incredible.

[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_07]: I very much I was like wow I didn't ever expect to enjoy a TOS episode this much

[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_07]: but here I am.

[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_09]: I am going to be that guy and implore you to watch literally the rest of TOS

[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_09]: because there are you know not just because I'm that guy but partially

[00:03:53] [SPEAKER_09]: because you will see this more frequently than you think.

[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_09]: Like I completely agree though.

[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_09]: There were a lot of shots in this where I was like why does this look better than

[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_09]: most TV that I watch now.

[00:04:09] [SPEAKER_09]: Like yeah their use of handheld cameras was really impressive.

[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_09]: The framing on a couple of these shots is like straight out of film school

[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_07]: but going down the stairs through the caves and stuff like man this is really

[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_07]: competently shot.

[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_07]: This is fantastic.

[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_09]: And specifically the shot where there are two Kirk's in the same frame talking

[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_09]: to each other.

[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_09]: I'm like this is 100 percent seamless.

[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_07]: It was fantastic.

[00:04:39] [SPEAKER_07]: I don't know if they went back and if the retouching fix that or if that's

[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_07]: how they shot it because damn that was impressive.

[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_07]: Looking at him like I cannot see the division line here.

[00:04:50] [SPEAKER_07]: I know it's there obviously we know it's there but this is so much better.

[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_07]: You don't have that strange off light matte version of one of them that you

[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_07]: got in the 80s and 90s when they did this.

[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_07]: I mean TNG didn't do it that well.

[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_09]: And to be super fair there are a lot of times TOS did not do it that well.

[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_09]: So I'm wondering like is this down to the director of this episode.

[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_09]: Like you know did they just have a better camera crew here or something.

[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_09]: But like I mean there is a reason that this that well there's probably a

[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_09]: lot of reasons this episode is considered a classic.

[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_09]: But I think for me what really aids the watchability of TOS is how truly

[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_09]: freaking good it looks most of the time.

[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah like yes there are some 60s TV things going on.

[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_09]: Of course.

[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_09]: A lot of the episodes.

[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah but like man it's seriously I mean it looked better like you said it

[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_09]: would shoot the same scene.

[00:05:55] [SPEAKER_07]: I was very very impressed.

[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_07]: Absolutely.

[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_07]: And I mean like you said the split screen with the two Kirk's it was

[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_07]: definitely I could overlook the really jarring transition when spinning one

[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_07]: Kirk over to show us the other Kirk.

[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_07]: All right.

[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_07]: We're gonna just pretend we didn't see that but all right.

[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_09]: And talk about stretching for time I was like OK we get it.

[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_09]: The table is spinning.

[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah you know I don't need that much of it.

[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah and I'm not looking to do like an hour and a half episode on of open

[00:06:29] [SPEAKER_07]: pike night on what is realistically a 27 minute episode of TOS.

[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_07]: Has anybody ever gone through and edited TOS to cut out all the filler.

[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_07]: Oh wow.

[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_09]: I again to be defensive a little bit.

[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_09]: There are episodes where it's like they couldn't lose a second of this.

[00:06:47] [SPEAKER_09]: Oh yeah.

[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_09]: But yeah but this is not one of those episodes to point.

[00:06:52] [SPEAKER_09]: There's a lot of OK pan for reaction.

[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_09]: OK reaction.

[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_09]: OK reverse shot.

[00:06:59] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah and then just sometimes another reverse shot and then another reverse

[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_07]: shot and then another reverse shot then commercial break and then the same

[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_07]: reverse shots and was like wow Ruck is looking at Kirk hanging from that cliff

[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_07]: for almost a full minute.

[00:07:15] [SPEAKER_09]: So we'll leave some of the speculation for a little bit later but I there are

[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_09]: so many things in this episode that I noticed like oh the strange new worlds

[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_09]: crew really paid attention to this when they were putting their things

[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_09]: together like who is silver fingernails.

[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah I was like man.

[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah I'm so glad they paid that kind of attention because honestly the manicures

[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_09]: and strange new worlds are amazing and one of my favorite little details.

[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah and I mean we do have some great calls tonight.

[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_07]: What do you say we jump into one of those then we'll start talking about

[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_07]: the episode in earnest why don't we.

[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_07]: Oh yeah let's hear from Ernest.

[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_07]: All right.

[00:07:58] [SPEAKER_07]: Oh I don't have earnest but how about Zoe.

[00:08:00] [SPEAKER_07]: We always put Zoe to the end.

[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_07]: Let's bring Zoe to the beginning this time.

[00:08:04] [SPEAKER_07]: Here we go.

[00:08:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Open Pike night.

[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_03]: This is USS Cinema.

[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Zoe Richardson captain commanding also host of Backlit Cinema the podcast

[00:08:12] [SPEAKER_03]: coming to you with my thoughts on the Enterprise's mission as to the

[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_03]: events on planet XO3.

[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_03]: So Nurse Chapel is still an ensign after all these years under Kirk's

[00:08:24] [SPEAKER_03]: command that was surprising.

[00:08:26] [SPEAKER_03]: It suggests that she did something to prevent her from gaining rank

[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_03]: because you'd expect her to be at least a lieutenant by now.

[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Also when Kirk asked Spock if Dr.

[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Corby was still alive Spock remained silent and I thought that was a

[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_03]: remarkable consideration on Spock's part to consider Nurse Chapel's

[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_03]: feelings that was remarkable.

[00:08:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Also I would be remiss in not commenting that I had gotten Dr.

[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Phil Boyce confused with Dr.

[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Corby.

[00:09:02] [SPEAKER_03]: It could be because it's been a long time since I reviewed the events on

[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_03]: XO3 and I have forgotten most of what had happened.

[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Also made me think of what Dr.

[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Corby must have been in real life.

[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I've never met the man and he was probably a remarkable man and I can't

[00:09:23] [SPEAKER_03]: wait to see what he'll be up to when he comes across the crew of the

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Enterprise with Captain Christopher Pike because he was probably crazy

[00:09:33] [SPEAKER_03]: for a long time.

[00:09:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Richardson out.

[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_07]: I like the point ZO makes there and it's kind of what we were making

[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_07]: with the when Jim Kirk actually made it to the actual Enterprise

[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_07]: in Strange New Worlds after a couple of episodes where it was

[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_07]: alternate or time traveler things like that.

[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_07]: This is in Strange New Worlds is going to be the first time we

[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_07]: get to meet Roger Corby despite him having made his first appearance

[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_07]: on screen over 60 years ago.

[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_07]: So that'll be fun.

[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.

[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_09]: And I so to the point about chapel though I think so if I'm not

[00:10:09] [SPEAKER_09]: mistaken in Strange New Worlds she's considered a civilian or at

[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_09]: least not part of the chain of command right.

[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_09]: She's on loan.

[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_09]: I cannot remember from where but she's like she's there as kind

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_09]: of a favor to Banga.

[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_07]: She's not really it was some unit.

[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_09]: Oh it might be.

[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.

[00:10:29] [SPEAKER_09]: They mentioned like four universities in the first three

[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_09]: episodes of season one.

[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_09]: They really did.

[00:10:34] [SPEAKER_09]: I can't I just you know I can't I don't quite have the detail

[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_09]: on that but I think that we may see her choose to become part of

[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_09]: Starfleet in season three because Corby says you know hey I'm

[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_09]: going to go to XO three for five years and right here is where I

[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_09]: want to bring in some really cool parallels right.

[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_09]: Like all of season two we have Spock devastated that his

[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_09]: girlfriend is going to go to another school all summer right.

[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_09]: And it's like dude it's three months like if your relationship

[00:11:13] [SPEAKER_09]: cannot survive being apart for three months when both of your

[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_09]: jobs entail being in space maybe maybe there's something else

[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_09]: up with that relationship.

[00:11:24] [SPEAKER_09]: But what an interesting parallel that as soon as she decides

[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_09]: OK I'm going to sing a song about how ready I am to leave

[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_09]: you for this new opportunity.

[00:11:33] [SPEAKER_09]: She goes and finds this new opportunity and then Corby is

[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_09]: like all right see you later.

[00:11:38] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah apparently after they get engaged too right.

[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_09]: So he's like is this a marry me when I get back kind of thing.

[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_09]: I mean I have questions yeah yeah I have questions about

[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_09]: what we will see from him in strange new world season three

[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_09]: because my first instinct right is to say oh he'll be like

[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_09]: getting ready for this trip she'll fall in love with him

[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_09]: and then he'll propose and then leave because that would

[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_09]: wrap it all up real quickly but we don't know that maybe

[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_09]: he's in three episodes.

[00:12:11] [SPEAKER_09]: Like I we don't know at all what it's going to look like so

[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_09]: I'm really really curious about that.

[00:12:19] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah it's going to be it'll be very interesting to see and

[00:12:22] [SPEAKER_07]: you know it'll be obviously we know we get to Appleback

[00:12:25] [SPEAKER_07]: we've seen the first clip of the season and we know

[00:12:27] [SPEAKER_07]: she's back by episode five because of course it's episode

[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_07]: five.

[00:12:31] [SPEAKER_07]: Like you said on our previous episode coverage of all that

[00:12:34] [SPEAKER_07]: but I really liked I can see you know not that not that we

[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_07]: it needs to happen or needs to be this way but there is I

[00:12:46] [SPEAKER_07]: can see how our Jess Bush chapel gets to the major

[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_07]: Barrett chapel but obviously something you know not that

[00:12:57] [SPEAKER_07]: they're trying to make it go that exact line but I can

[00:13:01] [SPEAKER_07]: believe it.

[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_07]: I can see like OK obviously you know the man lays pipe right.

[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_07]: Like there I got a good laugh out of Jesse.

[00:13:10] [SPEAKER_07]: But obviously there's something there that you know she go

[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_07]: where we're about to see a big change in Christine

[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_07]: Chapel's life in season three to get to anywhere remotely

[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_07]: close to this point if we're trying to line up with

[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_07]: TOS even a little bit.

[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_09]: And part of what makes me wonder if it will be like a

[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_09]: direct you know if it will be one episode will they set

[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_09]: up like oh he's really interested in this planet

[00:13:39] [SPEAKER_09]: specifically because he wants to like he's heard about

[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_09]: robotics or you know things like that.

[00:13:46] [SPEAKER_09]: Or is that an interest that he comes upon later after

[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_09]: having been there for a while right.

[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_09]: Like because at this point what we know of him in

[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_09]: strange new worlds is what they give us in the first

[00:14:00] [SPEAKER_09]: 10 seconds of this episode which is he's the Louis

[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_09]: pastor of archaeological medicine.

[00:14:07] [SPEAKER_09]: So which is a great phrase but it's like what does

[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_09]: that mean.

[00:14:14] [SPEAKER_07]: Like yeah because going from archaeological medicine to

[00:14:17] [SPEAKER_07]: affecting how multiple species immunize themselves

[00:14:20] [SPEAKER_07]: to robot planet like that's a that's a hard left

[00:14:24] [SPEAKER_07]: turn this guy makes that is a hard left turn.

[00:14:27] [SPEAKER_07]: So yeah we'll just see what happens.

[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_09]: And Cameron I think you had John pull a very

[00:14:32] [SPEAKER_09]: specific line from this cold open.

[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_09]: That's right I do.

[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_09]: Do you have that line ready to go John.

[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_09]: I do.

[00:14:38] [SPEAKER_09]: Here we go.

[00:14:39] [SPEAKER_06]: Have you ever been engaged Mr Spock.

[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_06]: That's cold.

[00:14:43] [SPEAKER_07]: That's cold.

[00:14:44] [SPEAKER_06]: I love 60 years ago that was just like it was

[00:14:47] [SPEAKER_06]: that was an innocent question on her part but now

[00:14:49] [SPEAKER_06]: with the strange new world context that is a sick

[00:14:51] [SPEAKER_06]: burn super sick burn.

[00:14:54] [SPEAKER_06]: Wow.

[00:14:54] [SPEAKER_06]: That's exactly exactly what I wrote my notes is

[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_06]: like sick burn by chapel.

[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_06]: Wow.

[00:15:00] [SPEAKER_06]: And I like it.

[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_06]: Kurt gives him a look and now I'm wondering

[00:15:02] [SPEAKER_06]: like does Kirk know does Kirk know that she

[00:15:04] [SPEAKER_06]: broke up his engagement because wow he gives a

[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_06]: look that could go either way.

[00:15:09] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah yeah.

[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_09]: And to play my role it's a little shaky with

[00:15:14] [SPEAKER_09]: Cameron right because we assume that Christine

[00:15:17] [SPEAKER_09]: learns this later at the start of season two in

[00:15:20] [SPEAKER_09]: time when she's like trying to feed Spock some

[00:15:24] [SPEAKER_09]: soup or whatever and he throws it at the wall

[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_09]: next to her head.

[00:15:27] [SPEAKER_09]: But it's like exactly what we've talked about a

[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_09]: lot which is we love the fleshing out that

[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_09]: strange new worlds is doing with these

[00:15:37] [SPEAKER_09]: characters because that makes this read so much

[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_09]: more savage.

[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah there are some savage lines in this

[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_07]: episode.

[00:15:46] [SPEAKER_09]: Oh and chapel gets most of them.

[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_09]: Yes she does.

[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_09]: But even here without that backstory she puts

[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_09]: some stank on that because it's like you're

[00:15:57] [SPEAKER_09]: probably probably the meaning behind it

[00:16:00] [SPEAKER_09]: originally was like of course you would never

[00:16:02] [SPEAKER_09]: have been engaged right.

[00:16:04] [SPEAKER_09]: Like so it's just like any way you cut this

[00:16:07] [SPEAKER_09]: it is a sick burn.

[00:16:11] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah yeah.

[00:16:13] [SPEAKER_06]: The other kind of subtext I love in this

[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_06]: opening is when Corby comes on and is like

[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah I need I need you to come down just

[00:16:19] [SPEAKER_06]: you Kirk and Spock suddenly like bolts from

[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_06]: his chair and rushes to his captain's side

[00:16:24] [SPEAKER_06]: like the hell you say.

[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah yeah I am suspicious as fuck right now.

[00:16:29] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah and then they talked more and you

[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_07]: know chapels they're talking and then a

[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_07]: couple random ass bridge crew are like

[00:16:36] [SPEAKER_07]: standing there in the background eavesdropping

[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_07]: in on this conversation like wow there's

[00:16:41] [SPEAKER_07]: drinks being served on this bridge.

[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_07]: This is a different enterprise than we've

[00:16:45] [SPEAKER_07]: seen from Captain Pike that's for sure.

[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_09]: And I got to say I don't think she pops

[00:16:50] [SPEAKER_09]: up until later but there is an extra in

[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_09]: the background with a gorgeous pair of

[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_09]: braided ponytails and like an updo

[00:17:01] [SPEAKER_09]: combination and I'm like man the

[00:17:03] [SPEAKER_09]: attention to detail here is really

[00:17:06] [SPEAKER_09]: impressive for a low budget 60s TV show.

[00:17:09] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_07]: I like you know we're a great job.

[00:17:12] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah we opened up talking about how

[00:17:14] [SPEAKER_07]: visually and technically impressive this

[00:17:16] [SPEAKER_07]: episode is this.

[00:17:17] [SPEAKER_07]: It has been my favorite episode of

[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_07]: TOS I've ever seen so far just because

[00:17:21] [SPEAKER_07]: I was like really it looked so good

[00:17:25] [SPEAKER_07]: and you know like I've said before I

[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_07]: really like camera motion and the

[00:17:29] [SPEAKER_07]: camera very rarely unless we're in a

[00:17:32] [SPEAKER_07]: close up that camera is moving all the

[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_07]: damn time in this episode.

[00:17:36] [SPEAKER_06]: Well or sometimes it's just the

[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_06]: lens because there are some snap zooms

[00:17:39] [SPEAKER_06]: here.

[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah yeah.

[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know what that is but I

[00:17:43] [SPEAKER_06]: believe you and you know the zoom is

[00:17:46] [SPEAKER_06]: right.

[00:17:47] [SPEAKER_06]: Right.

[00:17:47] [SPEAKER_06]: It's like they're really fast.

[00:17:48] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.

[00:17:49] [SPEAKER_06]: Instead of.

[00:17:49] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh because there's the classic dolly

[00:17:51] [SPEAKER_06]: into Spock with his eyebrow rays but

[00:17:54] [SPEAKER_06]: these are just oh got you the lens

[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_06]: fast instead of moving the whole

[00:17:57] [SPEAKER_06]: camera.

[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_09]: Gotcha.

[00:17:59] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah well and I mean that's

[00:18:01] [SPEAKER_09]: arguably a classic TOS thing too but

[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_09]: it was very noticeable here and I

[00:18:07] [SPEAKER_09]: just did do have to ask now John I

[00:18:10] [SPEAKER_09]: have to get specific how many

[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_09]: episodes of TOS have you seen.

[00:18:14] [SPEAKER_09]: Because there's some.

[00:18:15] [SPEAKER_06]: Or.

[00:18:16] [SPEAKER_09]: Episodes.

[00:18:17] [SPEAKER_06]: OK I was going to say this is like

[00:18:18] [SPEAKER_06]: middle of the pack for me.

[00:18:21] [SPEAKER_07]: Wow I am not like I've never

[00:18:23] [SPEAKER_07]: really read a big draw to TOS.

[00:18:25] [SPEAKER_07]: No no no that's fine.

[00:18:26] [SPEAKER_07]: So it's been fun to watch like I

[00:18:28] [SPEAKER_07]: but there's some good episodes.

[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_07]: I'm sure there I know there are

[00:18:31] [SPEAKER_07]: good some good episodes I still

[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_07]: need to see city on the edge of

[00:18:33] [SPEAKER_07]: forever but that's a good one.

[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_07]: But you know it was fun to watch

[00:18:37] [SPEAKER_07]: it for the first time with this from

[00:18:39] [SPEAKER_07]: our perspective and be like man

[00:18:41] [SPEAKER_07]: Spock's really mean addicted

[00:18:42] [SPEAKER_07]: chapel damn chapels being really

[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_07]: mean to spot all this history I've

[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_07]: seen them share.

[00:18:47] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[00:18:48] [SPEAKER_07]: It's a that's a great perspective

[00:18:50] [SPEAKER_07]: it is a fun way to look at it.

[00:18:52] [SPEAKER_06]: We're okay so let's go ahead

[00:18:54] [SPEAKER_06]: and hear from I miss those.

[00:18:56] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah man.

[00:18:58] [SPEAKER_06]: Guys we're not going to be able

[00:18:59] [SPEAKER_06]: to fake that I was here for

[00:19:00] [SPEAKER_06]: the time I can't wasn't here for

[00:19:01] [SPEAKER_06]: 10 minutes fine just trying

[00:19:03] [SPEAKER_06]: cam whatever whatever.

[00:19:05] [SPEAKER_06]: But let's go ahead.

[00:19:07] [SPEAKER_06]: Did you read those email though.

[00:19:09] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh no crap I forgot he wrote

[00:19:10] [SPEAKER_06]: one because that was great.

[00:19:12] [SPEAKER_06]: Can you pull it up.

[00:19:13] [SPEAKER_06]: He says I still don't know what

[00:19:15] [SPEAKER_06]: little girls are made of.

[00:19:17] [SPEAKER_06]: So the review of the mission to

[00:19:18] [SPEAKER_06]: XO 3 has left me with more

[00:19:19] [SPEAKER_06]: unanswered questions.

[00:19:21] [SPEAKER_06]: I've included some thoughts on

[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_06]: nurse chapel Mr Spock and Dr

[00:19:24] [SPEAKER_06]: Corby.

[00:19:24] [SPEAKER_06]: I also got confused between Dr

[00:19:26] [SPEAKER_06]: Kobe from this episode and Dr

[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_06]: Boyce from the original pilot

[00:19:29] [SPEAKER_06]: which is why I thought that

[00:19:30] [SPEAKER_06]: the actor Killian O'Sullivan

[00:19:33] [SPEAKER_06]: was too young.

[00:19:34] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes he's too young to play Dr

[00:19:35] [SPEAKER_06]: Boyce but he's just right to

[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_06]: play Dr Corby.

[00:19:37] [SPEAKER_06]: I still wonder if Dr Boyce

[00:19:39] [SPEAKER_06]: will make an appearance in

[00:19:39] [SPEAKER_06]: season. Yeah.

[00:19:41] [SPEAKER_06]: OK so I did not try to do a

[00:19:43] [SPEAKER_06]: ZO impression I apologize.

[00:19:45] [SPEAKER_06]: And you're welcome.

[00:19:46] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah and partially that's

[00:19:48] [SPEAKER_09]: because an impression was

[00:19:49] [SPEAKER_09]: demanded of us slightly later

[00:19:50] [SPEAKER_09]: in this episode.

[00:19:52] [SPEAKER_09]: Saving it.

[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_09]: OK so I assume

[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_09]: that the title is a play on

[00:19:59] [SPEAKER_09]: the rhyme right.

[00:20:01] [SPEAKER_09]: Right.

[00:20:01] [SPEAKER_09]: Surgren's boys are made of

[00:20:02] [SPEAKER_09]: cam. Right.

[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah and whatever and snails

[00:20:05] [SPEAKER_09]: and puppy dog tails.

[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_09]: Snips.

[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_09]: But for some reason.

[00:20:08] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.

[00:20:08] [SPEAKER_09]: That's right.

[00:20:09] [SPEAKER_09]: That's right.

[00:20:10] [SPEAKER_09]: But like.

[00:20:12] [SPEAKER_09]: I'm with Zo like I still am not

[00:20:14] [SPEAKER_09]: like oh OK so that's why

[00:20:16] [SPEAKER_09]: it's called this.

[00:20:18] [SPEAKER_07]: Unless this episode is mainly

[00:20:19] [SPEAKER_07]: about Andrea and they just

[00:20:21] [SPEAKER_07]: forgot to make that point.

[00:20:22] [SPEAKER_07]: It's like that's the only

[00:20:24] [SPEAKER_07]: girl that got made in this

[00:20:26] [SPEAKER_07]: episode.

[00:20:27] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah it's a bad title on

[00:20:28] [SPEAKER_06]: the on the surface but I

[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_06]: think it is because of the

[00:20:31] [SPEAKER_06]: you have to think of the

[00:20:32] [SPEAKER_06]: whole rhyme and be like

[00:20:33] [SPEAKER_06]: sugar and spice and

[00:20:34] [SPEAKER_06]: everything nice and that's

[00:20:35] [SPEAKER_06]: what Dr Corby is trying to

[00:20:36] [SPEAKER_06]: do he wants to make androids

[00:20:38] [SPEAKER_06]: that are just the good stuff

[00:20:39] [SPEAKER_06]: and the episode is proving

[00:20:40] [SPEAKER_06]: that it's not.

[00:20:42] [SPEAKER_06]: There's the metaphor.

[00:20:43] [SPEAKER_06]: Good work.

[00:20:43] [SPEAKER_06]: Thank you.

[00:20:44] [SPEAKER_06]: But yeah it's not a great

[00:20:46] [SPEAKER_06]: title because you did that's

[00:20:46] [SPEAKER_06]: not what you think of

[00:20:47] [SPEAKER_06]: immediately.

[00:20:48] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.

[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_09]: So there is definitely a

[00:20:50] [SPEAKER_09]: deleted scene where he

[00:20:51] [SPEAKER_09]: accidentally tips a big vat

[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_09]: of chemical X into

[00:20:54] [SPEAKER_09]: the mix.

[00:20:55] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.

[00:20:56] [SPEAKER_07]: All right.

[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_07]: The snails the snails know

[00:20:59] [SPEAKER_06]: you know.

[00:21:04] [SPEAKER_06]: There's a snail crawling on

[00:21:05] [SPEAKER_06]: one of those green blobby

[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_06]: things.

[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_09]: So can we agree that

[00:21:10] [SPEAKER_09]: Matthews is possibly

[00:21:12] [SPEAKER_09]: the most bored security

[00:21:14] [SPEAKER_09]: officer in the history

[00:21:16] [SPEAKER_07]: of anything.

[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_07]: Super bored.

[00:21:19] [SPEAKER_07]: And I mean Matthew

[00:21:21] [SPEAKER_07]: like I know Richard's

[00:21:22] [SPEAKER_07]: dying a lot of ways but

[00:21:23] [SPEAKER_07]: just off screen

[00:21:26] [SPEAKER_07]: with a yell.

[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.

[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_09]: I I thought OK oh maybe

[00:21:30] [SPEAKER_09]: it's deeper than that right

[00:21:31] [SPEAKER_09]: like maybe he's really

[00:21:33] [SPEAKER_09]: foreshadowing the whole

[00:21:34] [SPEAKER_09]: robot factor here with his

[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_09]: performance.

[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.

[00:21:37] [SPEAKER_09]: But I mean come on.

[00:21:40] [SPEAKER_06]: Well I just like how

[00:21:41] [SPEAKER_06]: they're both or the other

[00:21:43] [SPEAKER_06]: security guard and Kirk

[00:21:45] [SPEAKER_06]: and Chappell are basically

[00:21:46] [SPEAKER_06]: on LSD as they're walking

[00:21:47] [SPEAKER_06]: down this tunnel because

[00:21:48] [SPEAKER_06]: they are just like

[00:21:50] [SPEAKER_06]: molesting that wall with

[00:21:51] [SPEAKER_06]: their hands.

[00:21:52] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh yeah.

[00:21:53] [SPEAKER_06]: And it's so lifelike.

[00:21:56] [SPEAKER_06]: These construction men have

[00:21:57] [SPEAKER_06]: done such a good job

[00:21:58] [SPEAKER_06]: making caves.

[00:21:59] [SPEAKER_06]: And this might be the first

[00:22:01] [SPEAKER_09]: appearance of a cave

[00:22:03] [SPEAKER_09]: technically because

[00:22:05] [SPEAKER_09]: the cage hadn't aired on TV

[00:22:07] [SPEAKER_09]: and I'd have to watch the

[00:22:09] [SPEAKER_09]: first six episodes again

[00:22:10] [SPEAKER_09]: which I'm happy to do

[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_09]: but I don't.

[00:22:12] [SPEAKER_09]: I feel like this might be

[00:22:14] [SPEAKER_09]: I mean let's be honest.

[00:22:16] [SPEAKER_09]: This is the most famous

[00:22:17] [SPEAKER_09]: Star Trek cave for reasons

[00:22:19] [SPEAKER_09]: we'll get to later.

[00:22:21] [SPEAKER_09]: But it also could be

[00:22:23] [SPEAKER_09]: the first if not like one

[00:22:24] [SPEAKER_09]: of the first.

[00:22:26] [SPEAKER_06]: You could have called this

[00:22:26] [SPEAKER_06]: episode in fact to steal

[00:22:28] [SPEAKER_06]: Rob's line from the past

[00:22:30] [SPEAKER_06]: which he'll use in our

[00:22:31] [SPEAKER_06]: upcoming green shirt episode

[00:22:32] [SPEAKER_06]: later this week.

[00:22:33] [SPEAKER_06]: Caves Caves Caves.

[00:22:34] [SPEAKER_06]: Exactly.

[00:22:35] [SPEAKER_06]: That's right.

[00:22:35] [SPEAKER_06]: We've got another famous cave

[00:22:36] [SPEAKER_06]: episode coming up over there.

[00:22:38] [SPEAKER_07]: So many caves.

[00:22:40] [SPEAKER_07]: It was strange to me like

[00:22:42] [SPEAKER_07]: seeing knowing what

[00:22:43] [SPEAKER_07]: chapel's been through in

[00:22:44] [SPEAKER_07]: her military history and

[00:22:45] [SPEAKER_07]: things like that like she

[00:22:46] [SPEAKER_07]: was really nervous just

[00:22:47] [SPEAKER_07]: walking by and kicking a

[00:22:48] [SPEAKER_07]: rock off the side of that

[00:22:49] [SPEAKER_07]: cliff is weird weird big

[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_07]: for her.

[00:22:52] [SPEAKER_07]: She you know after she

[00:22:53] [SPEAKER_06]: didn't have her what space

[00:22:55] [SPEAKER_06]: space PCP with her.

[00:22:56] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah she's never battle

[00:22:58] [SPEAKER_06]: meth.

[00:22:58] [SPEAKER_06]: She's she's battle.

[00:22:59] [SPEAKER_07]: She has flown into other

[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_07]: dimensions to negotiate with

[00:23:02] [SPEAKER_07]: with Hayes aliens

[00:23:03] [SPEAKER_07]: and this rock falling off

[00:23:05] [SPEAKER_07]: the edge is messing with

[00:23:06] [SPEAKER_07]: her.

[00:23:06] [SPEAKER_07]: But man I'm sure

[00:23:09] [SPEAKER_06]: what little girls are

[00:23:10] [SPEAKER_06]: made up.

[00:23:10] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah there we go.

[00:23:11] [SPEAKER_09]: I'm sure they like you

[00:23:13] [SPEAKER_09]: know way too late

[00:23:15] [SPEAKER_09]: reasoning for it would be

[00:23:17] [SPEAKER_09]: well you know she was

[00:23:18] [SPEAKER_09]: thrown off by hearing

[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_09]: Roger's voice again and

[00:23:21] [SPEAKER_09]: very very fragile place

[00:23:23] [SPEAKER_09]: emotionally.

[00:23:24] [SPEAKER_09]: But how about this Dr.

[00:23:26] [SPEAKER_09]: Brown guy the assistant

[00:23:28] [SPEAKER_09]: like very very intense

[00:23:31] [SPEAKER_09]: Igor vibes from this

[00:23:33] [SPEAKER_09]: guy and I rewound it

[00:23:35] [SPEAKER_09]: twice and watched he

[00:23:37] [SPEAKER_09]: blinks one time

[00:23:38] [SPEAKER_09]: between when we meet him

[00:23:40] [SPEAKER_09]: and when we meet Corby.

[00:23:41] [SPEAKER_09]: Oh wow.

[00:23:42] [SPEAKER_09]: And it's like I mean

[00:23:44] [SPEAKER_07]: that's a good point a good

[00:23:45] [SPEAKER_07]: little touch

[00:23:47] [SPEAKER_09]: and how many pieces of

[00:23:48] [SPEAKER_09]: old sci fi do you go

[00:23:49] [SPEAKER_09]: well that guy's probably

[00:23:50] [SPEAKER_09]: a robot and it turns out

[00:23:51] [SPEAKER_09]: to be right but like

[00:23:53] [SPEAKER_09]: it was a good touch.

[00:23:54] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah I really hope we

[00:23:55] [SPEAKER_06]: get to see him in season

[00:23:56] [SPEAKER_06]: three and I really hope

[00:23:57] [SPEAKER_06]: he gets the most dramatic

[00:23:59] [SPEAKER_06]: entrance of anybody ever

[00:24:00] [SPEAKER_06]: and that's just a standard

[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_06]: because my lord was that

[00:24:04] [SPEAKER_06]: an entrance.

[00:24:05] [SPEAKER_06]: Wow.

[00:24:06] [SPEAKER_09]: What movie am I thinking

[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_09]: of where that it's

[00:24:09] [SPEAKER_09]: basically that entrance

[00:24:10] [SPEAKER_06]: now you know it's tingling

[00:24:11] [SPEAKER_06]: the back of my head to

[00:24:12] [SPEAKER_06]: where someone walks out

[00:24:13] [SPEAKER_06]: in front of like a big

[00:24:14] [SPEAKER_06]: spotlight

[00:24:15] [SPEAKER_06]: and they turn it off.

[00:24:17] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh yeah.

[00:24:18] [SPEAKER_09]: Could like derail our

[00:24:20] [SPEAKER_09]: entire episode.

[00:24:21] [SPEAKER_09]: Then he steps out of

[00:24:22] [SPEAKER_07]: the spotlight we see who

[00:24:23] [SPEAKER_07]: it is dang it.

[00:24:24] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[00:24:25] [SPEAKER_07]: This is going to bug us.

[00:24:26] [SPEAKER_07]: You talk to me.

[00:24:27] [SPEAKER_07]: I wonder which listener is

[00:24:28] [SPEAKER_07]: yelling at their at

[00:24:30] [SPEAKER_07]: their head.

[00:24:30] [SPEAKER_07]: Right now yelling at us

[00:24:32] [SPEAKER_07]: what movie it is.

[00:24:33] [SPEAKER_09]: And the question the

[00:24:35] [SPEAKER_09]: subsequent question being

[00:24:37] [SPEAKER_09]: was one inspired by the

[00:24:38] [SPEAKER_09]: other right.

[00:24:39] [SPEAKER_09]: Now we know a lot of

[00:24:41] [SPEAKER_09]: people took a lot of

[00:24:42] [SPEAKER_09]: inspiration from Star

[00:24:43] [SPEAKER_09]: Trek.

[00:24:43] [SPEAKER_09]: Absolutely.

[00:24:45] [SPEAKER_09]: And I got to assume that

[00:24:46] [SPEAKER_09]: Revlon is among those

[00:24:47] [SPEAKER_09]: people because at this

[00:24:48] [SPEAKER_09]: point they clearly had

[00:24:49] [SPEAKER_09]: not yet invented

[00:24:50] [SPEAKER_09]: color stay lipstick

[00:24:53] [SPEAKER_09]: like Corby ends up

[00:24:54] [SPEAKER_09]: wearing at least half

[00:24:56] [SPEAKER_09]: of Chappell's lipstick.

[00:24:57] [SPEAKER_09]: Oh yeah.

[00:24:58] [SPEAKER_07]: Oh yeah.

[00:24:58] [SPEAKER_07]: And man like obviously

[00:25:01] [SPEAKER_07]: the budget for this

[00:25:02] [SPEAKER_07]: episode went to

[00:25:04] [SPEAKER_07]: costuming and foam

[00:25:06] [SPEAKER_07]: and red green and

[00:25:08] [SPEAKER_07]: purple light gels

[00:25:09] [SPEAKER_07]: because damn do we

[00:25:11] [SPEAKER_07]: see a lot of great

[00:25:12] [SPEAKER_07]: costumes and a lot of

[00:25:14] [SPEAKER_07]: foam.

[00:25:16] [SPEAKER_09]: We see a lot of

[00:25:17] [SPEAKER_09]: costumes and almost no

[00:25:19] [SPEAKER_09]: indication that any of

[00:25:20] [SPEAKER_09]: the people in those

[00:25:20] [SPEAKER_09]: costumes are wearing any

[00:25:22] [SPEAKER_09]: underwear.

[00:25:23] [SPEAKER_09]: Zero underwear.

[00:25:24] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah I mean I but

[00:25:26] [SPEAKER_06]: you got to admit that

[00:25:27] [SPEAKER_06]: Andrea is rocking her

[00:25:28] [SPEAKER_06]: spirit Halloween sexy

[00:25:30] [SPEAKER_06]: Tom Sawyer costume.

[00:25:31] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah no joke.

[00:25:32] [SPEAKER_09]: I have no problem

[00:25:33] [SPEAKER_09]: admitting that even a

[00:25:34] [SPEAKER_09]: little bit.

[00:25:36] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh that is it.

[00:25:38] [SPEAKER_06]: Is that it.

[00:25:39] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know if this is

[00:25:39] [SPEAKER_06]: what you're thinking of

[00:25:40] [SPEAKER_06]: Jesse.

[00:25:40] [SPEAKER_06]: It might be chat GPT

[00:25:41] [SPEAKER_06]: might have come through

[00:25:43] [SPEAKER_06]: Orson Welles and the

[00:25:44] [SPEAKER_06]: third man hasn't seen

[00:25:46] [SPEAKER_06]: quite like that where

[00:25:48] [SPEAKER_06]: he's running down

[00:25:49] [SPEAKER_06]: a tunnel with a bright

[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_06]: light behind.

[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_07]: That's one of them but

[00:25:51] [SPEAKER_07]: I'm I'm thinking of an

[00:25:52] [SPEAKER_07]: 80s one where it's

[00:25:54] [SPEAKER_07]: somebody thinks it's

[00:25:55] [SPEAKER_07]: like God and then it

[00:25:56] [SPEAKER_07]: steps out and it's just

[00:25:57] [SPEAKER_07]: a person kind of thing.

[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_07]: That's to me 80s

[00:26:01] [SPEAKER_07]: sounds more like what

[00:26:03] [SPEAKER_06]: I was probably more

[00:26:05] [SPEAKER_06]: or modern one.

[00:26:07] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean I really like

[00:26:08] [SPEAKER_09]: Citizen Kane but I

[00:26:10] [SPEAKER_09]: think that might be

[00:26:11] [SPEAKER_09]: that makes one of us in

[00:26:12] [SPEAKER_09]: this room.

[00:26:12] [SPEAKER_09]: All right.

[00:26:13] [SPEAKER_09]: What you guys don't

[00:26:14] [SPEAKER_09]: like Citizen Kane we

[00:26:15] [SPEAKER_09]: don't have time.

[00:26:16] [SPEAKER_07]: Citizen Kane is

[00:26:16] [SPEAKER_07]: amazing.

[00:26:17] [SPEAKER_07]: I mean it's amazing

[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_07]: for what it did.

[00:26:20] [SPEAKER_07]: It's a boring movie to

[00:26:22] [SPEAKER_07]: watch.

[00:26:23] [SPEAKER_08]: Like OK OK.

[00:26:25] [SPEAKER_09]: John you have got to

[00:26:26] [SPEAKER_09]: watch more TOS because

[00:26:27] [SPEAKER_09]: like this episode

[00:26:30] [SPEAKER_09]: is amazing technically

[00:26:31] [SPEAKER_09]: and visually for what it

[00:26:32] [SPEAKER_09]: did but like compared

[00:26:33] [SPEAKER_09]: to a lot of episodes.

[00:26:34] [SPEAKER_09]: It's a little bit boring.

[00:26:35] [SPEAKER_09]: So I'm very interested

[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_09]: to see what you think

[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_09]: about some of the

[00:26:39] [SPEAKER_09]: all time bangers.

[00:26:41] [SPEAKER_09]: But I mean yes

[00:26:43] [SPEAKER_09]: I'm not going to disagree

[00:26:44] [SPEAKER_09]: with you that like a

[00:26:45] [SPEAKER_09]: three hour movie about

[00:26:46] [SPEAKER_09]: a guy who runs a

[00:26:47] [SPEAKER_09]: newspaper is maybe

[00:26:49] [SPEAKER_09]: not the best idea for

[00:26:50] [SPEAKER_09]: a plot.

[00:26:50] [SPEAKER_09]: But like that movie

[00:26:52] [SPEAKER_09]: and you know this

[00:26:53] [SPEAKER_09]: that movie did so much

[00:26:54] [SPEAKER_09]: for every movie that

[00:26:55] [SPEAKER_09]: came out.

[00:26:56] [SPEAKER_07]: Oh yeah.

[00:26:56] [SPEAKER_07]: I will never take away

[00:26:57] [SPEAKER_07]: what it did.

[00:26:58] [SPEAKER_07]: Like it invented

[00:26:59] [SPEAKER_07]: the crane.

[00:27:01] [SPEAKER_06]: It did so much.

[00:27:03] [SPEAKER_06]: But Citizen Kane is an

[00:27:04] [SPEAKER_06]: hour and 59 minutes

[00:27:05] [SPEAKER_06]: and it fucks every minute.

[00:27:07] OK.

[00:27:09] [SPEAKER_09]: But it also feels like

[00:27:11] [SPEAKER_09]: it also feels like three

[00:27:12] [SPEAKER_09]: hours.

[00:27:13] [SPEAKER_07]: At least I know Cam

[00:27:14] [SPEAKER_07]: agrees with me on Chinatown

[00:27:15] [SPEAKER_07]: so I'm good there.

[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_09]: And you know maybe it

[00:27:18] [SPEAKER_09]: felt like three hours

[00:27:19] [SPEAKER_09]: because the first time I

[00:27:20] [SPEAKER_09]: saw it I was like 13

[00:27:21] [SPEAKER_09]: or something like you

[00:27:23] [SPEAKER_09]: know.

[00:27:24] [SPEAKER_06]: Well this has been the

[00:27:24] [SPEAKER_06]: hot take on classic

[00:27:25] [SPEAKER_06]: movies minute.

[00:27:26] [SPEAKER_09]: Yes.

[00:27:27] [SPEAKER_09]: So speaking of

[00:27:29] [SPEAKER_09]: Halloween props

[00:27:30] [SPEAKER_09]: did you guys recognize

[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_09]: the laser pistol that

[00:27:33] [SPEAKER_09]: Brown pulls out?

[00:27:35] [SPEAKER_07]: Nine.

[00:27:36] [SPEAKER_07]: It looked familiar

[00:27:37] [SPEAKER_07]: but I couldn't I couldn't

[00:27:39] [SPEAKER_07]: place it because it

[00:27:40] [SPEAKER_07]: yeah the cylinder shape

[00:27:42] [SPEAKER_07]: and it's from the cage.

[00:27:44] [SPEAKER_09]: It's the laser pistol

[00:27:45] [SPEAKER_09]: model that they use in

[00:27:47] [SPEAKER_09]: the cage.

[00:27:47] [SPEAKER_09]: That's because we talked

[00:27:48] [SPEAKER_07]: about those. That's right.

[00:27:49] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.

[00:27:50] [SPEAKER_09]: And Major Barrett

[00:27:51] [SPEAKER_09]: obviously as number one

[00:27:53] [SPEAKER_09]: was overloading that

[00:27:54] [SPEAKER_09]: laser pistol at various

[00:27:56] [SPEAKER_09]: points in that episode.

[00:27:57] [SPEAKER_09]: Just a really great

[00:27:59] [SPEAKER_09]: reminder of how economical

[00:28:01] [SPEAKER_09]: Star Trek has always been

[00:28:02] [SPEAKER_09]: with its use of props

[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_09]: and costumes

[00:28:04] [SPEAKER_09]: and backgrounds etc.

[00:28:06] Yeah.

[00:28:06] [SPEAKER_07]: And just keeping guns on

[00:28:07] [SPEAKER_07]: top of cabinets

[00:28:08] [SPEAKER_07]: you know.

[00:28:09] [SPEAKER_06]: Right in like weird

[00:28:10] [SPEAKER_06]: secret compartments on

[00:28:11] [SPEAKER_06]: top of.

[00:28:12] [SPEAKER_09]: And like in a position

[00:28:14] [SPEAKER_09]: that an Android with

[00:28:15] [SPEAKER_09]: perfection would like

[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_09]: have to fumble around

[00:28:18] [SPEAKER_09]: for.

[00:28:19] [SPEAKER_09]: She can't just like

[00:28:21] [SPEAKER_09]: yeah reach for it

[00:28:22] [SPEAKER_09]: without looking.

[00:28:23] [SPEAKER_09]: She's got to do the whole

[00:28:24] [SPEAKER_09]: like where are my keys.

[00:28:27] [SPEAKER_06]: I apologize.

[00:28:28] [SPEAKER_06]: I think we're going to

[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_06]: hear from a caller

[00:28:30] [SPEAKER_06]: a while back.

[00:28:31] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah let's go ahead

[00:28:32] [SPEAKER_07]: and hear from Abby.

[00:28:33] [SPEAKER_07]: Here we go.

[00:28:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Hey open.

[00:28:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.

[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_01]: It's Abby summer from

[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_01]: the first flight podcast.

[00:28:37] [SPEAKER_01]: What a great thing for

[00:28:38] [SPEAKER_01]: us to think about

[00:28:39] [SPEAKER_01]: over this next hopefully

[00:28:41] [SPEAKER_01]: slightly less than a

[00:28:42] [SPEAKER_01]: year waiting for season

[00:28:43] [SPEAKER_01]: three.

[00:28:44] [SPEAKER_01]: I can't wait to see what

[00:28:45] [SPEAKER_01]: they do with Corby.

[00:28:45] [SPEAKER_01]: I really have a soft spot

[00:28:47] [SPEAKER_01]: for the TOS episode

[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_01]: because I didn't see

[00:28:50] [SPEAKER_01]: it until I had already

[00:28:51] [SPEAKER_01]: known Major Barrett

[00:28:52] [SPEAKER_01]: as the Waxana.

[00:28:53] [SPEAKER_01]: So to see her in this role

[00:28:54] [SPEAKER_01]: is another very

[00:28:57] [SPEAKER_01]: intelligent woman

[00:28:57] [SPEAKER_01]: and sometimes speaking

[00:28:59] [SPEAKER_01]: with what to me was

[00:29:00] [SPEAKER_01]: the Waxana's voice

[00:29:01] [SPEAKER_01]: has always just

[00:29:03] [SPEAKER_01]: resonated.

[00:29:04] [SPEAKER_01]: And I mean the

[00:29:05] [SPEAKER_01]: costume in this episode

[00:29:06] [SPEAKER_01]: is outstanding.

[00:29:09] [SPEAKER_01]: The fronts the backs

[00:29:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Ruck.

[00:29:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Ruck's costume has got

[00:29:12] [SPEAKER_01]: to be like 14 yards

[00:29:13] [SPEAKER_01]: of fabric.

[00:29:14] [SPEAKER_10]: I love it.

[00:29:15] [SPEAKER_01]: So I love the original.

[00:29:16] [SPEAKER_01]: I love the idea of

[00:29:18] [SPEAKER_01]: fleshing out Roger

[00:29:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Corby.

[00:29:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's see him how

[00:29:21] [SPEAKER_01]: he was before

[00:29:22] [SPEAKER_01]: he had reached this

[00:29:24] [SPEAKER_01]: critical moment in his life.

[00:29:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's see him

[00:29:27] [SPEAKER_01]: developing a relationship

[00:29:29] [SPEAKER_01]: with Christine.

[00:29:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's see them

[00:29:32] [SPEAKER_01]: really giving each

[00:29:33] [SPEAKER_01]: other the intellectual

[00:29:34] [SPEAKER_01]: stimulation that they

[00:29:35] [SPEAKER_01]: both crave and need

[00:29:36] [SPEAKER_01]: because they're both

[00:29:37] [SPEAKER_01]: brilliant.

[00:29:38] [SPEAKER_01]: And I don't want it to

[00:29:39] [SPEAKER_01]: become romance right away.

[00:29:40] [SPEAKER_01]: I want it to like

[00:29:41] [SPEAKER_01]: build slowly.

[00:29:42] [SPEAKER_01]: See the real

[00:29:43] [SPEAKER_01]: relationship there.

[00:29:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Let them be friends

[00:29:45] [SPEAKER_01]: beforehand

[00:29:46] [SPEAKER_01]: because that's what makes

[00:29:47] [SPEAKER_01]: the best romantic

[00:29:48] [SPEAKER_01]: partners.

[00:29:49] [SPEAKER_01]: So whatever they do

[00:29:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure they'll love it.

[00:29:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Can't wait to hear what

[00:29:52] [SPEAKER_01]: everybody else thinks.

[00:29:54] [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah it's the

[00:29:55] [SPEAKER_01]: penis rock episode.

[00:29:55] [SPEAKER_01]: So what else do I need

[00:29:56] [SPEAKER_01]: to end on?

[00:29:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Hope this finds you well.

[00:29:59] [SPEAKER_07]: There I'm glad a

[00:30:00] [SPEAKER_07]: caller said it.

[00:30:01] [SPEAKER_07]: There we go.

[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_09]: And to follow up

[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_09]: a similar pattern

[00:30:05] [SPEAKER_09]: I believe Abby also

[00:30:06] [SPEAKER_09]: sent an email along

[00:30:07] [SPEAKER_09]: with her call as did so.

[00:30:09] [SPEAKER_06]: She did.

[00:30:10] [SPEAKER_06]: Indeed she challenged

[00:30:12] [SPEAKER_06]: us to see who could

[00:30:13] [SPEAKER_06]: do the best impression

[00:30:15] [SPEAKER_06]: of ol' Ruck saying

[00:30:16] [SPEAKER_06]: the old ones.

[00:30:19] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know maybe

[00:30:19] [SPEAKER_06]: that's my impression.

[00:30:20] [SPEAKER_06]: I need to hear it again

[00:30:20] [SPEAKER_06]: though.

[00:30:20] [SPEAKER_06]: Do we bring the the O.G.

[00:30:22] [SPEAKER_07]: Do we want to hear it first

[00:30:23] [SPEAKER_07]: or do we want to do

[00:30:24] [SPEAKER_07]: our impression first

[00:30:25] [SPEAKER_07]: and then hear how we did.

[00:30:28] [SPEAKER_07]: Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

[00:30:28] [SPEAKER_07]: That's hard.

[00:30:29] [SPEAKER_07]: I need to hear it I think.

[00:30:30] [SPEAKER_07]: All right here we go.

[00:30:31] [SPEAKER_07]: Ready?

[00:30:33] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes.

[00:30:33] [SPEAKER_06]: The old ones.

[00:30:36] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't think mine was too bad.

[00:30:37] [SPEAKER_06]: No you're pretty close.

[00:30:39] [SPEAKER_06]: I need to get a little more

[00:30:41] [SPEAKER_06]: warble at though I think.

[00:30:43] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes.

[00:30:44] [SPEAKER_06]: The old ones.

[00:30:47] [SPEAKER_07]: Yes.

[00:30:48] [SPEAKER_07]: The old ones.

[00:30:51] [SPEAKER_09]: I don't know.

[00:30:52] [SPEAKER_09]: I think John has the

[00:30:53] [SPEAKER_09]: deepest voice naturally.

[00:30:54] [SPEAKER_09]: Yes.

[00:30:55] [SPEAKER_06]: The old ones.

[00:30:57] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.

[00:30:57] [SPEAKER_09]: He's got that natural

[00:30:58] [SPEAKER_09]: warble in there though.

[00:30:59] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah he does have that.

[00:31:00] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.

[00:31:01] [SPEAKER_09]: And Cameron's good at

[00:31:01] [SPEAKER_09]: that cup trick dang.

[00:31:04] [SPEAKER_06]: I know how to handle

[00:31:05] [SPEAKER_07]: my microphone.

[00:31:07] [SPEAKER_07]: I.

[00:31:07] [SPEAKER_07]: Just reached up and grabbed

[00:31:08] [SPEAKER_07]: that microphone,

[00:31:09] [SPEAKER_07]: tore it off the ceiling

[00:31:10] [SPEAKER_07]: and held it in his hands.

[00:31:12] [SPEAKER_07]: Should we do our

[00:31:13] [SPEAKER_07]: Ruck appreciation

[00:31:14] [SPEAKER_07]: minute now because man.

[00:31:15] [SPEAKER_07]: I was going to say.

[00:31:16] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.

[00:31:17] [SPEAKER_09]: I like zero

[00:31:19] [SPEAKER_09]: exaggeration.

[00:31:20] [SPEAKER_09]: Most of my notes are about

[00:31:21] [SPEAKER_09]: Ruck.

[00:31:22] [SPEAKER_09]: And it's because I was like.

[00:31:25] [SPEAKER_09]: Why do I recognize this guy?

[00:31:27] [SPEAKER_09]: I feel like I know that

[00:31:28] [SPEAKER_09]: there's something else about him.

[00:31:30] [SPEAKER_09]: He's Lurch.

[00:31:31] [SPEAKER_09]: OK.

[00:31:31] [SPEAKER_09]: The original Lurch.

[00:31:33] [SPEAKER_09]: But not only is he

[00:31:35] [SPEAKER_09]: the original Lurch.

[00:31:38] [SPEAKER_09]: But he played the same

[00:31:40] [SPEAKER_09]: character Lurch in the

[00:31:41] [SPEAKER_09]: Addams family,

[00:31:43] [SPEAKER_09]: Batman and Scooby Doo.

[00:31:45] [SPEAKER_09]: And he was freaking

[00:31:47] [SPEAKER_09]: Galactus at one point.

[00:31:49] [SPEAKER_09]: Wow.

[00:31:50] [SPEAKER_09]: He also played a man called

[00:31:52] [SPEAKER_09]: Agent Kronos,

[00:31:54] [SPEAKER_09]: Klingon reference in an animated

[00:31:56] [SPEAKER_09]: series called Space Sentinels.

[00:31:58] [SPEAKER_09]: And he was also the

[00:32:00] [SPEAKER_09]: voices of the Balak puppet

[00:32:01] [SPEAKER_09]: in the Corbomite Renewer.

[00:32:03] [SPEAKER_09]: I am Balak.

[00:32:06] [SPEAKER_09]: And all of the

[00:32:07] [SPEAKER_09]: snarly growly sounds of the

[00:32:09] [SPEAKER_09]: Gorn in Arena.

[00:32:11] [SPEAKER_09]: Like talk about a hell

[00:32:13] [SPEAKER_09]: of a career and this is just

[00:32:15] [SPEAKER_09]: between 1966 and 1972.

[00:32:18] [SPEAKER_09]: Like he was also

[00:32:20] [SPEAKER_09]: in a Roddenberry movie

[00:32:22] [SPEAKER_09]: called Planet Earth,

[00:32:24] [SPEAKER_09]: which featured a character

[00:32:26] [SPEAKER_09]: named Balak that he didn't play.

[00:32:29] [SPEAKER_09]: But this movie also had

[00:32:31] [SPEAKER_09]: Mejiel Barrett and one

[00:32:35] [SPEAKER_09]: Diana Moldar,

[00:32:37] [SPEAKER_09]: Dr. Pulaski and also

[00:32:40] [SPEAKER_09]: of two different episodes of TOS.

[00:32:43] [SPEAKER_09]: I like you guys,

[00:32:45] [SPEAKER_09]: the presence of this person on screen.

[00:32:47] [SPEAKER_09]: He picks Kirk up at one point

[00:32:49] [SPEAKER_09]: and throws him and it doesn't look

[00:32:50] [SPEAKER_09]: like a stunt.

[00:32:51] [SPEAKER_09]: No, it's just no.

[00:32:52] [SPEAKER_09]: That would have like a

[00:32:53] [SPEAKER_07]: sign of potatoes.

[00:32:54] [SPEAKER_06]: Man, just set to a stunt man

[00:32:56] [SPEAKER_06]: at one point for Kirk,

[00:32:58] [SPEAKER_06]: obviously.

[00:32:58] [SPEAKER_06]: But in the first shot,

[00:32:59] [SPEAKER_06]: when he picks him up over his head,

[00:33:00] [SPEAKER_06]: that is William Shatner being hefted

[00:33:02] [SPEAKER_06]: like five feet in the air.

[00:33:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:33:04] [SPEAKER_06]: By this man.

[00:33:05] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, after hearing all that,

[00:33:06] [SPEAKER_06]: I feel a little bad that I just wrote

[00:33:08] [SPEAKER_06]: down the rich man's tour Johnson

[00:33:10] [SPEAKER_06]: for him.

[00:33:13] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, he was great.

[00:33:14] [SPEAKER_06]: I loved him.

[00:33:15] [SPEAKER_06]: I to Abby's point,

[00:33:16] [SPEAKER_06]: I just pictured that he was wearing

[00:33:18] [SPEAKER_06]: one of those again Spirit

[00:33:19] [SPEAKER_06]: Halloween like he man muscle suit

[00:33:21] [SPEAKER_06]: costumes underneath his costume

[00:33:23] [SPEAKER_06]: because it was just obviously

[00:33:25] [SPEAKER_06]: so much under there.

[00:33:26] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:33:28] [SPEAKER_09]: It's like they said, we can't

[00:33:31] [SPEAKER_09]: physically build you a costume,

[00:33:33] [SPEAKER_09]: but we do have this comforter

[00:33:34] [SPEAKER_09]: from the world's largest bed

[00:33:36] [SPEAKER_09]: and a series of bobby pins.

[00:33:38] [SPEAKER_09]: Let's go for it.

[00:33:40] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[00:33:40] [SPEAKER_07]: And it's it's definitely OK.

[00:33:44] [SPEAKER_07]: Also, like Brooke included

[00:33:46] [SPEAKER_07]: the body count in this episode is insane.

[00:33:50] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, but I did.

[00:33:51] [SPEAKER_07]: I was definitely 60s

[00:33:52] [SPEAKER_07]: because I'm like, man, we totally

[00:33:53] [SPEAKER_07]: in 2024 would have heard

[00:33:55] [SPEAKER_07]: like a gruesome neck snap sound effect

[00:33:57] [SPEAKER_07]: for red shirt number two there.

[00:33:59] [SPEAKER_07]: Oh, yeah.

[00:34:01] [SPEAKER_07]: And and I love the dude that,

[00:34:03] [SPEAKER_07]: like I said, there's a bunch of cold,

[00:34:05] [SPEAKER_07]: like cold lines in this episode.

[00:34:07] [SPEAKER_07]: And Corby just saying

[00:34:08] [SPEAKER_07]: Ruck destroyed them both

[00:34:10] [SPEAKER_07]: talking about the red shirts

[00:34:11] [SPEAKER_07]: like goddamn destroyed.

[00:34:13] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, that's a rough line.

[00:34:16] [SPEAKER_06]: But I also love like,

[00:34:18] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, he's this big, menacing figure

[00:34:19] [SPEAKER_06]: and the when he is doing

[00:34:21] [SPEAKER_06]: the imitations, the voice imitations,

[00:34:23] [SPEAKER_06]: impressions.

[00:34:24] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, that was done

[00:34:25] [SPEAKER_06]: really, really well.

[00:34:26] [SPEAKER_06]: So then I also, you know, he's

[00:34:29] [SPEAKER_06]: he's Frank the Rock Callie and day

[00:34:31] [SPEAKER_06]: or maybe Frank the Rook Callie and day.

[00:34:33] [SPEAKER_06]: Now they go.

[00:34:34] [SPEAKER_06]: Do we know?

[00:34:35] [SPEAKER_06]: Kelly and House Callie and dough.

[00:34:37] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know.

[00:34:37] [SPEAKER_06]: No one likes that guy.

[00:34:38] [SPEAKER_06]: I know he does a lot of impressions.

[00:34:41] Yeah.

[00:34:42] [SPEAKER_09]: But you're right.

[00:34:43] [SPEAKER_09]: Like to me, the lip sync here

[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_09]: is like one of the more impressive

[00:34:49] [SPEAKER_09]: practical effects in

[00:34:51] [SPEAKER_09]: arguably all of the original series.

[00:34:53] [SPEAKER_09]: Right?

[00:34:53] [SPEAKER_09]: Like it is so spot on.

[00:34:56] [SPEAKER_09]: He you can see him

[00:34:58] [SPEAKER_09]: like using his throat

[00:35:00] [SPEAKER_09]: and tongue to mimic cadence.

[00:35:02] [SPEAKER_09]: And it's like.

[00:35:05] [SPEAKER_09]: It's really impressive,

[00:35:07] [SPEAKER_09]: like we've seen this.

[00:35:09] [SPEAKER_09]: We've everybody has seen

[00:35:10] [SPEAKER_09]: a lot of instances

[00:35:11] [SPEAKER_09]: where the dubbing is not good

[00:35:13] [SPEAKER_09]: when it's the same actor

[00:35:14] [SPEAKER_09]: reading the same lines.

[00:35:15] [SPEAKER_09]: But in a booth.

[00:35:17] [SPEAKER_09]: Right.

[00:35:17] [SPEAKER_10]: Yeah.

[00:35:17] [SPEAKER_10]: All right.

[00:35:18] [SPEAKER_09]: And it's like this guy is

[00:35:21] [SPEAKER_09]: a very, very good actor.

[00:35:24] [SPEAKER_09]: And to give him like the second fiddle

[00:35:27] [SPEAKER_09]: in an episode as like the

[00:35:29] [SPEAKER_09]: the second level boss is.

[00:35:33] [SPEAKER_09]: Mind blowing to me,

[00:35:34] [SPEAKER_09]: but it's also it really speaks to the quality.

[00:35:37] [SPEAKER_09]: Of what they had available at the time, it's

[00:35:41] [SPEAKER_09]: it's really, really impressive.

[00:35:43] [SPEAKER_09]: I don't think that Ted Cassidy's

[00:35:46] [SPEAKER_09]: presence in this episode can be overstated,

[00:35:50] [SPEAKER_09]: despite him being seven feet tall

[00:35:52] [SPEAKER_09]: and taking up the entire scene

[00:35:53] [SPEAKER_09]: every time he's in it like.

[00:35:56] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, I like I know we're here

[00:35:57] [SPEAKER_07]: to talk about Corby, but honestly,

[00:35:59] [SPEAKER_07]: I'm like, man, Andrea and Rook are the two

[00:36:01] [SPEAKER_07]: I like of non non ship characters

[00:36:04] [SPEAKER_07]: who I'm most interested in.

[00:36:05] [SPEAKER_07]: I don't care about the doctors.

[00:36:07] [SPEAKER_06]: Like I honestly both of their turns

[00:36:09] [SPEAKER_06]: are really good to you.

[00:36:10] [SPEAKER_06]: Like, I mean, his performance

[00:36:11] [SPEAKER_06]: when he starts having

[00:36:12] [SPEAKER_06]: his little existential crisis is

[00:36:15] [SPEAKER_06]: it's really good.

[00:36:16] [SPEAKER_06]: And then, I mean, it's more Kirk,

[00:36:18] [SPEAKER_06]: but just him kissing humanity

[00:36:20] [SPEAKER_06]: into an android is classic.

[00:36:23] [SPEAKER_10]: Absolutely.

[00:36:23] [SPEAKER_07]: I mean, you know, we they talk about like,

[00:36:26] [SPEAKER_07]: oh, Kirk always always Mackinac ladies,

[00:36:28] [SPEAKER_07]: you know, he's just a playboy.

[00:36:30] [SPEAKER_07]: But then people,

[00:36:30] [SPEAKER_07]: you know, have come back and been like,

[00:36:32] [SPEAKER_07]: no, he's a he's a stack of books,

[00:36:34] [SPEAKER_07]: you know, almost.

[00:36:35] [SPEAKER_07]: I mean, he is starstruck by Corby earlier.

[00:36:38] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, he's starstruck.

[00:36:39] [SPEAKER_07]: And but then like the quick thinking,

[00:36:40] [SPEAKER_07]: I really wish there had been more payoff

[00:36:43] [SPEAKER_07]: with the Spock insult.

[00:36:45] [SPEAKER_07]: I'm like, it's such a good moment.

[00:36:46] [SPEAKER_07]: Such a great moment.

[00:36:48] [SPEAKER_07]: Like, and you can see that

[00:36:49] [SPEAKER_07]: you see the payoff of delivering it.

[00:36:51] [SPEAKER_07]: You see Spock realize it.

[00:36:53] [SPEAKER_07]: And then they kind of distract them later on.

[00:36:56] [SPEAKER_06]: But it doesn't feel like

[00:36:57] [SPEAKER_06]: they were needed to for the ending.

[00:36:59] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, right.

[00:37:00] [SPEAKER_09]: It doesn't end up mattering

[00:37:01] [SPEAKER_09]: because it's all been solved

[00:37:03] [SPEAKER_09]: by the time Spock shows up.

[00:37:05] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, technically,

[00:37:06] [SPEAKER_06]: they wouldn't have called Andrea

[00:37:07] [SPEAKER_06]: and she wouldn't have killed Kirk

[00:37:08] [SPEAKER_06]: or Kirk Android.

[00:37:09] [SPEAKER_06]: But it felt like Kirk had things

[00:37:11] [SPEAKER_06]: in control by then anyhow.

[00:37:13] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, agreed.

[00:37:15] [SPEAKER_09]: And like it really

[00:37:18] [SPEAKER_09]: it's a great through line, right?

[00:37:19] [SPEAKER_09]: Because like you were saying, Cameron,

[00:37:21] [SPEAKER_09]: right at the start, Spock gets suspicious.

[00:37:22] [SPEAKER_09]: He's like, why does he only want to talk to you?

[00:37:24] [SPEAKER_09]: I don't like that.

[00:37:26] [SPEAKER_09]: You're kind of mine.

[00:37:27] [SPEAKER_09]: And come on, boo.

[00:37:28] [SPEAKER_09]: And then you get this

[00:37:31] [SPEAKER_09]: like the quick thinking of Kirk to be like, OK,

[00:37:34] [SPEAKER_09]: I was kind of pretending to be super out of it

[00:37:37] [SPEAKER_09]: because they put me on the mint

[00:37:38] [SPEAKER_09]: and I'm like, I'm not a crusting spin machine.

[00:37:40] [SPEAKER_09]: But I'm still with it enough to think like,

[00:37:43] [SPEAKER_09]: how do I ambush somebody

[00:37:44] [SPEAKER_09]: trying to make a copy of myself?

[00:37:46] [SPEAKER_09]: Oh, I'll just use attitudes

[00:37:47] [SPEAKER_09]: that I wouldn't normally vocalize.

[00:37:49] [SPEAKER_06]: Like, yeah, there we go.

[00:37:50] [SPEAKER_06]: Just bring it quick and to mine.

[00:37:52] [SPEAKER_06]: And hopefully that's how this mind reader thing works.

[00:37:55] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, it does.

[00:37:56] [SPEAKER_06]: It worked really well.

[00:37:57] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm good with that.

[00:37:58] [SPEAKER_09]: Nobody has outsmarted a computer

[00:38:00] [SPEAKER_09]: in like a larger number of ways

[00:38:03] [SPEAKER_09]: than Captain Kirk.

[00:38:04] [SPEAKER_09]: He can logic them to death.

[00:38:05] [SPEAKER_09]: He can kiss them into humanity like

[00:38:08] [SPEAKER_09]: he can logic them into violence

[00:38:11] [SPEAKER_09]: like the dude has quite the resume

[00:38:13] [SPEAKER_09]: when it comes to tricking a computer.

[00:38:15] [SPEAKER_07]: Absolutely.

[00:38:15] [SPEAKER_07]: He is the best of us.

[00:38:16] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, let's go ahead and hear from another caller.

[00:38:19] [SPEAKER_04]: Here is Matt Law.

[00:38:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Hey, Open Pike, it's Matt at Lawdog Safety on socials.

[00:38:24] [SPEAKER_04]: It has been a while since my last call in,

[00:38:26] [SPEAKER_04]: but I had some thoughts about this week's episode.

[00:38:28] [SPEAKER_04]: First, what are little girls made of with a B plot of lurch

[00:38:32] [SPEAKER_04]: in the case of the overtly phallic rock?

[00:38:34] [SPEAKER_04]: So many memeable moments in this episode made long before memes were a thing.

[00:38:38] [SPEAKER_04]: I remember diving into trivia about Ted Cassidy

[00:38:41] [SPEAKER_04]: when I watched this episode, who was raised in Philippi, West Virginia,

[00:38:43] [SPEAKER_04]: only a stone's throw away from where I grew up,

[00:38:46] [SPEAKER_04]: though sadly he passed away well before I was born.

[00:38:48] [SPEAKER_04]: He had a memorable career on screen.

[00:38:51] [SPEAKER_04]: I also remember this being one of the first episodes

[00:38:53] [SPEAKER_04]: where I realized just how dark TOS is.

[00:38:55] [SPEAKER_04]: My brother-in-law calls it a brightly lit nightmare.

[00:38:58] [SPEAKER_04]: And honestly, this episode lives up to that in many aspects.

[00:39:01] [SPEAKER_04]: Look, rather than a deep dive into who picked out Kirk's weaponized dildo

[00:39:05] [SPEAKER_04]: made of cave stone and whether it was on purpose,

[00:39:07] [SPEAKER_04]: I'd actually like to focus on my optimism for bringing Dr.

[00:39:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Corby into strange new worlds.

[00:39:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Although Michael Strong's performance was fantastic

[00:39:14] [SPEAKER_04]: and Dr. Corby can be rightfully classified as a legacy character,

[00:39:18] [SPEAKER_04]: I think a lot of room exists to flesh out this character.

[00:39:20] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, we have a whole courtship and engagement with Chapel to work through.

[00:39:23] [SPEAKER_04]: That could be fun.

[00:39:24] [SPEAKER_04]: It was certainly fun with Spock and Chapel.

[00:39:27] [SPEAKER_04]: The question is, will they bring in any of the red flags

[00:39:29] [SPEAKER_04]: that were made evident in this episode of TOS?

[00:39:32] [SPEAKER_04]: How hard would those red flags be pushed?

[00:39:34] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm good with just making him bright eyed and bushy tailed for this.

[00:39:37] [SPEAKER_04]: There's no need to push the signs of eventual downturn.

[00:39:40] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, Chapel was caught off guard in this episode

[00:39:41] [SPEAKER_04]: and there really wasn't anyone there to say I told you so.

[00:39:44] [SPEAKER_04]: Make it like Anakin Skywalker before corruption,

[00:39:47] [SPEAKER_04]: but with less midichlorians and statutory rape.

[00:39:50] [SPEAKER_04]: Anyway, those are my thoughts.

[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Live long and prosper, guys.

[00:39:53] [SPEAKER_04]: Love it. Great.

[00:39:55] [SPEAKER_09]: That knows his shit.

[00:39:56] [SPEAKER_09]: Like, I'm going to just agree with everything you said, man.

[00:40:00] [SPEAKER_09]: And 100 percent like I'm right there with what I hope they do with Roger

[00:40:05] [SPEAKER_09]: Corby. Like it's kind of like the Sam Kirk thing, right?

[00:40:08] [SPEAKER_09]: We know where this is going to end up.

[00:40:10] [SPEAKER_09]: We don't really need him to show up being like,

[00:40:12] [SPEAKER_09]: have you guys ever heard of an Android?

[00:40:14] [SPEAKER_09]: Like, well, we don't need it.

[00:40:17] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. Yeah. To go back to what I heard John talking about when I first popped in.

[00:40:21] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I mean, it didn't seem like he had much interest in robotics or Android.

[00:40:26] [SPEAKER_06]: He just happened to be on this planet, discovered them was dying

[00:40:30] [SPEAKER_06]: and then needed to to use a body became an Android.

[00:40:34] [SPEAKER_06]: And then that Android was suddenly very interested in creating more

[00:40:38] [SPEAKER_06]: androids. That wasn't Corby.

[00:40:40] [SPEAKER_06]: I think that's just the androids, you know, their version of wanting

[00:40:43] [SPEAKER_06]: to bone is wanting to make more androids, right?

[00:40:46] [SPEAKER_06]: Reproduction. That's what all species want to do.

[00:40:48] [SPEAKER_06]: Thing we do. Quick sidebar.

[00:40:52] [SPEAKER_06]: Corby had lost his legs, though, by the time he copied himself.

[00:40:55] [SPEAKER_06]: So is he just like green gelatin from the knees down under those pants?

[00:41:00] [SPEAKER_06]: God, I hope so.

[00:41:01] [SPEAKER_09]: He had the legs of Ruck as an example.

[00:41:04] [SPEAKER_09]: So it's kind of surprising that he's got Ruck's legs.

[00:41:07] [SPEAKER_09]: That's what I'm saying.

[00:41:08] [SPEAKER_09]: Like, it's funny that Corby isn't like 80 percent leg

[00:41:12] [SPEAKER_09]: and then just his torso hanging out up top.

[00:41:15] [SPEAKER_09]: But like to go back, what you're saying about the Android

[00:41:17] [SPEAKER_09]: sex drive, for lack of a better term, like watching

[00:41:22] [SPEAKER_09]: Chapel realize she probably got cheated on with a robot

[00:41:25] [SPEAKER_09]: is a strange experience. Yeah. But like.

[00:41:30] [SPEAKER_09]: Marshall Barrett played it so well,

[00:41:32] [SPEAKER_09]: oh, well, she went subtle with it and it worked like

[00:41:36] [SPEAKER_09]: that is a really weird situation to pretend you're being a part of.

[00:41:40] [SPEAKER_09]: And she didn't overplay it. I was really impressed.

[00:41:43] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, I love how like these old shows kind of get away

[00:41:46] [SPEAKER_06]: with mentioning sex in them because Corby goes, I promise you, I don't love her.

[00:41:51] [SPEAKER_06]: How could you think I would love her?

[00:41:52] [SPEAKER_06]: And she goes, but did you love her?

[00:41:55] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. Right. Do you love her?

[00:41:57] [SPEAKER_06]: Like, did you as in the action? Yep.

[00:41:59] [SPEAKER_06]: I was like, oh, I know what you're saying, Christine.

[00:42:02] [SPEAKER_09]: And I like, you know, the way he says, well, she can't love.

[00:42:05] [SPEAKER_09]: It's like, are you saying you didn't build the requisite parts for that?

[00:42:11] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. Or or is it?

[00:42:12] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah. And we see later on what he meant, kind of.

[00:42:15] [SPEAKER_07]: But I do like that in 1960, what?

[00:42:20] [SPEAKER_07]: They went when did this come out?

[00:42:21] [SPEAKER_09]: I think this was a 67.

[00:42:23] [SPEAKER_07]: Like when this came out in 67, this was a two.

[00:42:26] [SPEAKER_07]: There were the body count. This episode was two.

[00:42:29] [SPEAKER_07]: Once TNG aired Measure of the Man, the body count this episode

[00:42:32] [SPEAKER_07]: shot up to like seven and it's like, well, they're androids.

[00:42:36] [SPEAKER_07]: They're people like the court has ruled.

[00:42:38] [SPEAKER_07]: Can we argue? Yeah. Yeah.

[00:42:41] [SPEAKER_09]: I just checked. It is a 1966 because it's season one.

[00:42:44] [SPEAKER_09]: And it's basically a Halloween episode, guys.

[00:42:48] [SPEAKER_09]: First aired on October 20th, 1960.

[00:42:51] [SPEAKER_09]: Hell, yeah. Totally works for a Halloween episode.

[00:42:55] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. Well, yeah.

[00:42:57] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, just sets the bar higher for us. Yep.

[00:43:01] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, I do want to talk about Christine.

[00:43:02] [SPEAKER_06]: Like, I think the big flaw of this episode, of course, is, you know,

[00:43:06] [SPEAKER_06]: a lot of the the cringey stuff of just 60s television and that like

[00:43:09] [SPEAKER_06]: this should have been a Christine Chapel episode, right?

[00:43:12] [SPEAKER_06]: Right. They set it up as hers from the beginning,

[00:43:14] [SPEAKER_06]: and then she just kind of gets sidelined for the whole thing as Kirk takes over.

[00:43:18] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. And escapes for no reason and grabs a cock rock for some reason.

[00:43:22] [SPEAKER_06]: But I will just make it my headcanon, though,

[00:43:25] [SPEAKER_06]: that the scene where Robot Kirk comes in and talks to her because like

[00:43:29] [SPEAKER_06]: Christine, you just saw him make a Kirk Android that you couldn't tell apart.

[00:43:33] [SPEAKER_06]: You have to know this is him.

[00:43:34] [SPEAKER_06]: So I'm just going to tell myself that she was acting that whole time

[00:43:38] [SPEAKER_06]: and that whole like, oh, please don't make me choose.

[00:43:41] [SPEAKER_06]: Like, was her being I know what Corby's trying to find out

[00:43:43] [SPEAKER_06]: and I'm going to give him what he wants to exactly.

[00:43:45] [SPEAKER_07]: I I can agree with that. Yeah, I fully agree with that.

[00:43:48] [SPEAKER_07]: Also, I just love like watching that very long cloning scene

[00:43:54] [SPEAKER_07]: just as like, oh boy, here's more padding.

[00:43:57] [SPEAKER_07]: I love watching it is like, how could you tell them apart?

[00:44:00] [SPEAKER_07]: I just want to be like, well, the one with vomit spewing from him.

[00:44:05] [SPEAKER_07]: That's the.

[00:44:07] [SPEAKER_09]: My note right here literally says

[00:44:10] [SPEAKER_09]: Christine should be able to pick out which Kirk is real

[00:44:12] [SPEAKER_09]: because he should be vomiting all over himself from riding the Chattanooga around.

[00:44:16] [SPEAKER_06]: I am glad to be on the same page.

[00:44:18] [SPEAKER_06]: I can't read the Gravitron without vomiting.

[00:44:21] [SPEAKER_06]: True story.

[00:44:22] [SPEAKER_09]: And he's also hide this.

[00:44:24] [SPEAKER_09]: And there's only two sides.

[00:44:26] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, right. Like he started on the left.

[00:44:29] [SPEAKER_09]: He ends on the left.

[00:44:29] [SPEAKER_09]: They're facing opposite directions. Come on.

[00:44:33] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, she's just like, I can't tell them apart.

[00:44:36] [SPEAKER_06]: Like shocked is like we just established you can make life like

[00:44:40] [SPEAKER_06]: this. Certainly you've seen clones by now or like at least robots that look human.

[00:44:46] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, this isn't a huge thing.

[00:44:48] [SPEAKER_06]: But I guess the scene does answer those question of what little girls are made of.

[00:44:52] [SPEAKER_06]: They're made of those giant like rubbery figures

[00:44:54] [SPEAKER_06]: you can put in bathtubs and they grow a little bit

[00:44:57] [SPEAKER_06]: unless you leave them in there too long and then they get slimy

[00:44:59] [SPEAKER_06]: and start falling apart.

[00:44:59] [SPEAKER_07]: I thought that was just a bathtub size bath bomb.

[00:45:01] [SPEAKER_07]: Like you put that whole thing in the bathtub.

[00:45:04] [SPEAKER_06]: You leave it in there 24 hours and that's what it becomes.

[00:45:06] [SPEAKER_09]: But you have to cover it in that green frosting.

[00:45:10] [SPEAKER_09]: Otherwise, the Android transference doesn't work.

[00:45:13] [SPEAKER_09]: Now, Cam, we spoke about this a little bit before you got here.

[00:45:16] [SPEAKER_09]: And I have to ask you if maybe you have insight on this.

[00:45:19] [SPEAKER_09]: How is the scene with two Kirk's more flawless and seamless than

[00:45:23] [SPEAKER_09]: like every scene with two copies of the same person we've ever seen after this?

[00:45:28] [SPEAKER_09]: Like how did they do that?

[00:45:30] [SPEAKER_09]: Is it two plates?

[00:45:31] [SPEAKER_09]: Like what is going on?

[00:45:33] [SPEAKER_09]: Because it is perfect.

[00:45:34] [SPEAKER_06]: I think because they weren't trying to make it too tricky.

[00:45:38] [SPEAKER_06]: A lot of the other ones, they try to move the camera

[00:45:40] [SPEAKER_06]: to show how tricky they can be with moving the camera

[00:45:42] [SPEAKER_06]: or having them like reach out and touch the other person.

[00:45:45] [SPEAKER_06]: There's been some data once in TNG where clearly it's someone else's hands

[00:45:48] [SPEAKER_06]: coming up to grab the guy's collars like data to his collar.

[00:45:52] [SPEAKER_06]: Here, they just put the camera there.

[00:45:54] [SPEAKER_06]: Let them act against each other.

[00:45:56] [SPEAKER_06]: Do a split screen.

[00:45:57] [SPEAKER_06]: Don't move anything.

[00:45:58] [SPEAKER_06]: Don't change any lights.

[00:45:59] [SPEAKER_06]: Don't move anything.

[00:46:00] [SPEAKER_06]: All on the actor.

[00:46:01] [SPEAKER_06]: And every time I watch TOS, I'm like, oh, yeah, this is why William

[00:46:05] [SPEAKER_06]: Shatner is a star.

[00:46:05] [SPEAKER_09]: Like he is the dude can freaking act like say what you will about the weird cadence

[00:46:12] [SPEAKER_09]: and the Priceline commercials and everything else

[00:46:16] [SPEAKER_09]: that has come after this in his life.

[00:46:18] [SPEAKER_09]: The dude can act.

[00:46:19] [SPEAKER_06]: He commands a screen is what he does.

[00:46:22] [SPEAKER_07]: I also love how how quick Kirk is because we've you know,

[00:46:25] [SPEAKER_07]: we see it here where he drops Hitler as a reference.

[00:46:27] [SPEAKER_07]: He does the same thing in the undiscovered country.

[00:46:30] [SPEAKER_07]: Like Hitler, Poland, 1938.

[00:46:32] [SPEAKER_07]: It's like, damn, you are.

[00:46:34] [SPEAKER_07]: You are a walk.

[00:46:35] [SPEAKER_07]: You're a little too into Hitler, aren't you?

[00:46:40] [SPEAKER_06]: There's a lot of an Internet thread.

[00:46:42] [SPEAKER_09]: Yep. Yeah.

[00:46:43] [SPEAKER_09]: You know, there's somebody at the Academy that's like,

[00:46:46] [SPEAKER_09]: oh, here comes Kirk.

[00:46:47] [SPEAKER_09]: I hope you've read up on Hitler.

[00:46:49] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[00:46:51] [SPEAKER_07]: All right.

[00:46:51] [SPEAKER_07]: Let's hear from another one of our collars.

[00:46:53] [SPEAKER_07]: Here is Platy.

[00:46:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Hey, open pike night.

[00:46:56] [SPEAKER_02]: It's Palladium three back with my hits, shits and misses

[00:47:00] [SPEAKER_02]: for the TOS episode.

[00:47:02] [SPEAKER_02]: What are little girls made of now first hits right off the Batman?

[00:47:06] [SPEAKER_02]: We got a red shirt death.

[00:47:07] [SPEAKER_02]: That was awesome.

[00:47:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Like there's nothing like a classic red shirt death.

[00:47:11] [SPEAKER_02]: You know, you got to lean into the stereotype.

[00:47:12] [SPEAKER_02]: That's why they're there.

[00:47:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought the split screen between Kirk and Android Kirk was pretty darn good.

[00:47:18] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, looking at it here, what's 50, 60, 70 years later, it's still great.

[00:47:23] [SPEAKER_02]: And also, how can we miss the amazing rock that Kirk pulled off

[00:47:27] [SPEAKER_02]: the cavern, the stalactite to try to hit rock with?

[00:47:30] [SPEAKER_02]: I think your sister from another podcast has the best way to say it.

[00:47:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Guys, it looks like a dildo.

[00:47:36] [SPEAKER_02]: And there we go.

[00:47:37] [SPEAKER_02]: All right, shits.

[00:47:38] [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, oh, shit, man.

[00:47:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I went back and replayed this few times.

[00:47:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Kirk got picked up by Rock like he was a rag doll.

[00:47:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Like just watching that scene, you look at and just see him get

[00:47:48] [SPEAKER_02]: picked up and tossed.

[00:47:50] [SPEAKER_02]: And Porter's chapel, man, like her emotional state must be shit

[00:47:53] [SPEAKER_02]: like this whole episode.

[00:47:55] [SPEAKER_02]: And afterwards, like a new track, we'd spend a whole episode on just

[00:47:59] [SPEAKER_02]: her feelings about that.

[00:48:00] [SPEAKER_02]: But my gosh, how devastating now misses.

[00:48:02] [SPEAKER_02]: I think I only missed one thing.

[00:48:04] [SPEAKER_02]: And that is the answer to the question.

[00:48:06] [SPEAKER_02]: What are little girls made out of?

[00:48:08] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I still don't know if it's sugar spice, everything nice.

[00:48:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Circuits, electronics, side boob.

[00:48:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean what?

[00:48:14] [SPEAKER_02]: But what come on to us?

[00:48:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Tell me. Answer the question.

[00:48:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Pledium three signing out.

[00:48:18] [SPEAKER_07]: Man, I love our collars.

[00:48:21] [SPEAKER_09]: I was going to say that makes me so happy to hear that we are on so many of the

[00:48:25] [SPEAKER_09]: same pages in the same book as a lot of our collars.

[00:48:30] [SPEAKER_09]: And if there's one spot where this episode falls down, right,

[00:48:35] [SPEAKER_09]: it's probably in the answer to that question.

[00:48:38] [SPEAKER_06]: We're not only because the pledge into the cabin.

[00:48:40] [SPEAKER_06]: The bottomless pit.

[00:48:41] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, what was his name?

[00:48:42] [SPEAKER_09]: It was Matthews.

[00:48:44] [SPEAKER_09]: There is the answer is probably subtextually little girls are made of suspicion and

[00:48:52] [SPEAKER_09]: jealousy and possessive thoughts of their fiance, right?

[00:48:57] [SPEAKER_09]: Because like that's most of what we get here.

[00:49:00] [SPEAKER_09]: And I still think Chapel comes out as a star in this episode.

[00:49:04] [SPEAKER_09]: But like you said, Cam, they don't really focus on it.

[00:49:07] [SPEAKER_09]: They don't really give her her due as far as like what this would do to her.

[00:49:12] [SPEAKER_09]: And as Plattie just said, like we don't really get to see the emotional effects of it.

[00:49:17] [SPEAKER_09]: The last scene of this episode is your classic Kirkenspock bantering back and

[00:49:21] [SPEAKER_09]: forth on the bridge.

[00:49:22] [SPEAKER_09]: And isn't that funny?

[00:49:23] [SPEAKER_09]: All right, onto the next episode.

[00:49:25] [SPEAKER_09]: So like, you know, if there's something that pulls away from my enjoyment of

[00:49:29] [SPEAKER_09]: this episode, it's definitely somewhere in that arena.

[00:49:34] [SPEAKER_06]: Plattie, I have been podcasting for seven years now, I think.

[00:49:37] [SPEAKER_06]: Anyway, hearing you clip Marcy from green shirt and playing her here, it might be my

[00:49:42] [SPEAKER_06]: favorite podcasting moment of all time.

[00:49:44] [SPEAKER_06]: So thank you for that.

[00:49:45] [SPEAKER_06]: It was fantastic.

[00:49:47] [SPEAKER_06]: Brought a very big smile to my face and my son is actually podcasting with

[00:49:50] [SPEAKER_06]: Marcy as soon as we're done here.

[00:49:51] [SPEAKER_06]: So I'm going to let her know that she has been immortalized that way.

[00:49:55] [SPEAKER_07]: Heck yeah.

[00:49:56] [SPEAKER_07]: Heck yeah.

[00:49:57] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.

[00:49:58] [SPEAKER_06]: The the old stone bone, as I called it in our discord earlier.

[00:50:02] [SPEAKER_06]: I was very worried I wasn't going to be able to outdo that here for the

[00:50:05] [SPEAKER_06]: podcast.

[00:50:06] [SPEAKER_06]: But then I came up with, and I know I've already used a rock

[00:50:10] [SPEAKER_06]: wrestler reference, but here we go again.

[00:50:12] [SPEAKER_06]: Weighing the rock Johnson is one of the guys in that scene.

[00:50:17] [SPEAKER_06]: Nice.

[00:50:17] [SPEAKER_06]: You got it right there.

[00:50:19] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, as a dad, that totally works.

[00:50:22] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm just saying call me the past year of podcasting dick jokes.

[00:50:28] [SPEAKER_06]: Just saying that still like definitely look pretty tight.

[00:50:31] [SPEAKER_06]: Let's just say it that way.

[00:50:33] [SPEAKER_06]: I was I was brainstorming stalactite references.

[00:50:36] [SPEAKER_06]: I couldn't.

[00:50:37] [SPEAKER_06]: There you go.

[00:50:37] [SPEAKER_06]: There you go.

[00:50:38] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, I kept trying to pair it with Ruck and I was like, is there a

[00:50:42] [SPEAKER_09]: Fudd Ruckers or like Ruck fuckers joke in here somewhere?

[00:50:47] [SPEAKER_09]: But I couldn't, I couldn't quite put it together as you can tell.

[00:50:49] [SPEAKER_09]: I just had it.

[00:50:50] [SPEAKER_06]: Is it Ruck versus rock?

[00:50:52] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.

[00:50:53] [SPEAKER_06]: That whole thing was like, Kirk, what is your plan?

[00:50:56] [SPEAKER_06]: Right?

[00:50:56] [SPEAKER_06]: What are you got out?

[00:50:57] [SPEAKER_06]: You have so many bad ass moments throughout this whole episode, but

[00:51:00] [SPEAKER_06]: this one is like Ruck was about to leave.

[00:51:03] [SPEAKER_06]: You had a home run there.

[00:51:05] [SPEAKER_06]: You had you were about to get away scot-free and you called him back

[00:51:08] [SPEAKER_06]: because you thought you could beat him with your giant rock dildo.

[00:51:11] [SPEAKER_07]: Yep.

[00:51:11] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[00:51:12] [SPEAKER_07]: And then and then I think for a second when he was hanging from the

[00:51:15] [SPEAKER_07]: cliff and they were padding for more time, it's he was like, I'm not

[00:51:20] [SPEAKER_07]: moving.

[00:51:20] [SPEAKER_07]: Can he not see me?

[00:51:21] [SPEAKER_07]: Is he like a Tyrannosaurus or a Rex?

[00:51:23] [SPEAKER_07]: Is that why he just keeps staring at me while I'm staring at him?

[00:51:28] [SPEAKER_07]: What is going on?

[00:51:29] [SPEAKER_09]: The other two androids.

[00:51:30] [SPEAKER_09]: Yep.

[00:51:30] [SPEAKER_09]: He didn't even know we're there.

[00:51:33] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.

[00:51:34] [SPEAKER_09]: And I mean, that's another scene where like you remember, Oh right.

[00:51:39] [SPEAKER_09]: This is a low budget 1960s TV show.

[00:51:43] [SPEAKER_09]: The rock that Kirk is holding onto to keep from falling definitely has some

[00:51:47] [SPEAKER_09]: flex in it because it is made of foam.

[00:51:51] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[00:51:51] [SPEAKER_07]: And it's like coming apart under his boots while he's scrabbling on it.

[00:51:55] [SPEAKER_09]: And the resolution of that, like they go to break on a literal cliffhanger.

[00:52:03] [SPEAKER_09]: Yep.

[00:52:04] [SPEAKER_09]: And then the fix for it is Ruck decided not to let him die.

[00:52:08] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.

[00:52:09] [SPEAKER_09]: It fits.

[00:52:11] [SPEAKER_09]: Okay.

[00:52:11] [SPEAKER_09]: It really does fit, but like, come on.

[00:52:14] [SPEAKER_06]: So I had watched this movie.

[00:52:15] [SPEAKER_06]: I watched this episode sometime in the last year, I think like six to

[00:52:18] [SPEAKER_06]: eight months ago, which is going to come back for another point later.

[00:52:22] [SPEAKER_06]: But yeah, I kind of remembered that Ruck has like a, he turns on Corby moment,

[00:52:27] [SPEAKER_06]: but I thought, yeah, I thought it was here.

[00:52:28] [SPEAKER_06]: I thought like he was deciding to save Kirk because he was like, I can use

[00:52:31] [SPEAKER_06]: Kirk to get rid of Corby, but no, we get reminded the next scene.

[00:52:35] [SPEAKER_06]: That's because he had promised not to do any harm to Kirk.

[00:52:37] [SPEAKER_06]: And that's why he saved him.

[00:52:38] [SPEAKER_06]: And I guess Kirk remembered that while dangling there.

[00:52:42] [SPEAKER_07]: Well, and he kind of looked at him.

[00:52:43] [SPEAKER_07]: Chappell called after Ruck to say, don't, you know, don't hurt him.

[00:52:46] [SPEAKER_07]: Don't do anything.

[00:52:47] [SPEAKER_07]: So I think it was him fighting his.

[00:52:49] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.

[00:52:50] [SPEAKER_09]: But I agree with Cam, like you can kind of see on Kirk's face something of like,

[00:52:56] [SPEAKER_09]: do you remember?

[00:52:57] [SPEAKER_04]: You're not supposed to kill me.

[00:52:58] [SPEAKER_04]: All right.

[00:52:58] [SPEAKER_06]: You totally remember you're not supposed to kill me.

[00:53:00] [SPEAKER_06]: All right.

[00:53:02] [SPEAKER_06]: But yeah, I, I remembered Corby being a lot older than he was.

[00:53:05] [SPEAKER_06]: So like I have kind of been like, oh, how are they going to do this

[00:53:08] [SPEAKER_06]: romance between Chappell and Corby, this old man?

[00:53:12] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, he's not that much older.

[00:53:13] [SPEAKER_06]: He's what, like five to 10 years older.

[00:53:16] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, and like Christine is a little older in this.

[00:53:21] [SPEAKER_09]: In this. Right.

[00:53:22] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.

[00:53:22] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah. Then she is in Strange New World.

[00:53:24] [SPEAKER_09]: So like I yeah, I don't think it's going to end up being an issue to your point.

[00:53:29] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.

[00:53:29] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.

[00:53:29] [SPEAKER_09]: And also, this is funny.

[00:53:30] [SPEAKER_07]: I remember like, yeah, like a 25 year old looked like a damn 40 year old sometimes.

[00:53:35] [SPEAKER_07]: That's true.

[00:53:35] [SPEAKER_07]: Back then.

[00:53:35] [SPEAKER_07]: Oh man.

[00:53:36] [SPEAKER_07]: Like how old are these people supposed to be?

[00:53:38] [SPEAKER_09]: Like, yeah, that's the actress who played Andrea was 59 when this was shot.

[00:53:44] [SPEAKER_09]: Damn.

[00:53:45] [SPEAKER_06]: You almost sold me without like, whoa, just being serious.

[00:53:48] [SPEAKER_09]: I couldn't help.

[00:53:51] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I was just watching this.

[00:53:52] [SPEAKER_06]: I was I'm sure I kill you know, Murphy, who's who's playing Corbyn?

[00:53:56] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, Sullivan.

[00:53:57] [SPEAKER_06]: Sullivan.

[00:53:59] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm sure he'll be great.

[00:54:00] [SPEAKER_06]: But I was watching this and being like, oh, man, I could see Crispin Glover

[00:54:04] [SPEAKER_06]: playing a young Corby.

[00:54:06] [SPEAKER_09]: So, you know, 25 years ago, sure.

[00:54:09] [SPEAKER_06]: But yes, sure.

[00:54:10] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah. Well, I haven't seen him in since Willard.

[00:54:13] [SPEAKER_09]: I'm all for putting Crispin Glover and more stuff.

[00:54:17] [SPEAKER_09]: I'm going to go ahead and admit since we're sharing embarrassing truths this week,

[00:54:23] [SPEAKER_09]: the first time I saw him, I think was Charlie's Angels,

[00:54:26] [SPEAKER_09]: because I had not yet seen back to the future.

[00:54:29] [SPEAKER_07]: I hate to tell you this, Jesse.

[00:54:32] [SPEAKER_07]: Charlie's Angels came out 25 years ago.

[00:54:35] [SPEAKER_09]: I that's why I said Crispin Glover.

[00:54:40] [SPEAKER_09]: Like, I'm perfectly fine with that.

[00:54:42] [SPEAKER_09]: I just I remember going like, that is the creepiest human being I have ever seen.

[00:54:46] [SPEAKER_09]: They should put him in more movies.

[00:54:48] [SPEAKER_09]: And my dad was like, yeah, he's the dad for back to the future.

[00:54:52] [SPEAKER_09]: It was like, oh, great. What's that about?

[00:54:57] [SPEAKER_07]: But, uh, well, I'm glad you finally seen back to the future.

[00:55:01] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, that's why I was worried that was going to be your admission.

[00:55:04] [SPEAKER_07]: Oh, yeah, no. Yeah.

[00:55:05] [SPEAKER_09]: I saw that as a kid.

[00:55:07] [SPEAKER_06]: It was just after I had seen.

[00:55:09] [SPEAKER_09]: No. OK. All right.

[00:55:10] [SPEAKER_09]: Also still have not seen Die Hard.

[00:55:12] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, we know. We know. All right.

[00:55:13] [SPEAKER_06]: That's going to be a Christmas episode.

[00:55:15] [SPEAKER_07]: There we go. I mean, we're looking for one.

[00:55:18] [SPEAKER_07]: All right. Let's hear from Melanie.

[00:55:20] [SPEAKER_07]: Watch this bad taste out of her mouth.

[00:55:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Hi, guys.

[00:55:22] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm so tired, but I wanted to send something in.

[00:55:26] [SPEAKER_00]: I haven't had time to rewatch the classic track episode with Corby.

[00:55:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Lots of stuff going on here.

[00:55:31] [SPEAKER_00]: But I remember some parts of it well enough to talk about it, I think.

[00:55:35] [SPEAKER_00]: But let's start from the beginning.

[00:55:36] [SPEAKER_00]: When I looked at Trachypedia.com, searching for Roger Corby,

[00:55:40] [SPEAKER_00]: I saw that his expedition is supposed to vanish in 2261.

[00:55:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Isn't that when the third season of Strange New World should be happening?

[00:55:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Hmm. I wonder how Delphidimin.

[00:55:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Chepol is only now becoming part of his fellowship, though.

[00:55:54] [SPEAKER_00]: She should have been involved with him before.

[00:55:56] [SPEAKER_00]: But I'm not one to stick to an old canon when a good story can be told.

[00:56:01] [SPEAKER_00]: And the actor they chose to play Corby, Zilien or Sullivan,

[00:56:05] [SPEAKER_00]: definitely appears not as arrogant as the old Corby seemed to me.

[00:56:08] [SPEAKER_00]: So when we saw him in the US, he's already an android.

[00:56:13] [SPEAKER_00]: To make my babbling short, I look forward to the almost

[00:56:16] [SPEAKER_00]: parable bending of canon, and I hope he deserves Christine's love and affection.

[00:56:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Live long and prosper.

[00:56:23] [SPEAKER_09]: Really good point, which is not something new.

[00:56:26] [SPEAKER_09]: Melanie making good points with her calls.

[00:56:28] [SPEAKER_09]: But I believe there was a recent interview,

[00:56:31] [SPEAKER_09]: I think it was with Variety, where the showrunners are talking about

[00:56:35] [SPEAKER_09]: we really need to have a character that Christine could believably fall in love with.

[00:56:41] [SPEAKER_09]: So you're right on track there, Melanie.

[00:56:43] [SPEAKER_09]: Like we need something other than like, oh, he's so smart.

[00:56:47] [SPEAKER_09]: Right. Because Christine is also brilliant.

[00:56:50] [SPEAKER_09]: Like this isn't like a fawning infatuation thing.

[00:56:54] [SPEAKER_09]: It needs to be a real mutual respect style full on relationship.

[00:56:58] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, as I think Matt said, like, we don't want the Anakin situation.

[00:57:02] [SPEAKER_06]: We don't want to go like, oh, we know this guy's going to turn bad.

[00:57:05] [SPEAKER_06]: So let's just remind you about that every other scene.

[00:57:08] [SPEAKER_06]: Like, no, we want the turn to be surprising when we watch these

[00:57:11] [SPEAKER_06]: in chronological order to go, oh, I can't believe that beloved

[00:57:14] [SPEAKER_06]: character became this cruel android.

[00:57:17] [SPEAKER_06]: So, yeah, I hope that's the route they go.

[00:57:19] [SPEAKER_07]: But his hand did get damaged and it broke his brain

[00:57:23] [SPEAKER_07]: seeing his damaged robot hand just saying

[00:57:27] [SPEAKER_07]: it was a very Star Wars moment.

[00:57:30] [SPEAKER_09]: I agree with you that Star Wars has made an entire franchise

[00:57:33] [SPEAKER_09]: out of ripping off Star Trek.

[00:57:35] [SPEAKER_06]: So. OK, guys, I just I came back from part of the reason I was late

[00:57:41] [SPEAKER_06]: is I had to take my son to the Lego store.

[00:57:43] [SPEAKER_06]: OK, where he bought a Star Wars Lego, but I have my Star Trek

[00:57:46] [SPEAKER_06]: lapel pin on and we met a 10 year old who was in line ahead of us.

[00:57:51] [SPEAKER_06]: And the boy goes, oh, are you a are you a Star Wars family?

[00:57:54] [SPEAKER_06]: And I was like, oh, and he's like, I mean, are you a Star Wars

[00:57:57] [SPEAKER_06]: and a Star Trek family?

[00:57:58] [SPEAKER_06]: Because he must have seen my pin then. Wow.

[00:58:00] [SPEAKER_06]: I know. I was like, oh, this is OK.

[00:58:01] [SPEAKER_06]: I was like, yeah, you know, yeah, we like both.

[00:58:03] [SPEAKER_06]: What about you? And it's like, yeah, I I'm a Star Trek guy.

[00:58:07] [SPEAKER_06]: I like Star Wars, but it's.

[00:58:10] [SPEAKER_06]: It's old. Yes.

[00:58:14] [SPEAKER_09]: And then you told that kid, check out my podcast,

[00:58:17] [SPEAKER_09]: for sure, a newbies track to the next generation.

[00:58:20] [SPEAKER_09]: It's right up your alley. Yeah.

[00:58:23] [SPEAKER_09]: Wow. That gives me hope for the future.

[00:58:26] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, like that just makes me happy to hear.

[00:58:29] [SPEAKER_09]: And yeah, someday, you know, when that kid is 30 or 40

[00:58:33] [SPEAKER_09]: and he has a pair of friends that are 30 or 40,

[00:58:37] [SPEAKER_06]: maybe he'll start a track a track podcast that we can call into.

[00:58:41] [SPEAKER_06]: But then I was very proud of my son who then goes,

[00:58:43] [SPEAKER_06]: isn't Star Trek older, Dad?

[00:58:45] [SPEAKER_09]: I was like, yes, yes, it is very true. Nice.

[00:58:49] [SPEAKER_09]: Well, not to take anything away from your son,

[00:58:52] [SPEAKER_09]: but like he should know that living in your house.

[00:58:55] [SPEAKER_09]: If he didn't know that, you might be like, you know what?

[00:58:58] [SPEAKER_09]: No Star Wars Legos today.

[00:59:00] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, just since we're talking about this, my on the way home,

[00:59:03] [SPEAKER_06]: my son did categorize everything.

[00:59:04] [SPEAKER_06]: He likes cartoon Star Trek the best.

[00:59:07] [SPEAKER_06]: He likes that more than Star Wars,

[00:59:08] [SPEAKER_06]: but he likes Star Wars more than the movie Star Trek.

[00:59:11] [SPEAKER_06]: So that's where they fall right now. OK.

[00:59:13] [SPEAKER_06]: I could dig that. Yeah.

[00:59:15] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah. I'm like, Lord X is some of the best new tracks.

[00:59:18] [SPEAKER_09]: So that's absolutely and and T.A.S.

[00:59:21] [SPEAKER_09]: is some of the wackiest Star Trek.

[00:59:24] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, he hasn't seen that yet.

[00:59:25] [SPEAKER_09]: I mean, that might give him trauma to see that before he's like 15.

[00:59:29] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah. All right. Yeah.

[00:59:30] [SPEAKER_09]: I get it.

[00:59:32] [SPEAKER_09]: No, no. So I have to ask you again, Cameron.

[00:59:35] [SPEAKER_09]: I have a production question.

[00:59:37] [SPEAKER_09]: How common is a handheld shot in the 1960s TV era?

[00:59:43] [SPEAKER_09]: Like this.

[00:59:46] [SPEAKER_09]: Deeply effective, like very well used handheld

[00:59:49] [SPEAKER_09]: shot of copy Kirk getting into the turbo lift.

[00:59:53] [SPEAKER_09]: It's like, yeah, that's that's textbook.

[00:59:57] [SPEAKER_09]: That's what you use it for.

[00:59:59] [SPEAKER_09]: You use it to make the viewer feel unmoored and uncomfortable. Like.

[01:00:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Honestly, I'm not sure, but I do know that I'm impressed

[01:00:08] [SPEAKER_06]: when they do that in TNG 30 years later, 20, 30 years later. Yeah.

[01:00:13] [SPEAKER_06]: So, yeah, I mean, it's not that common.

[01:00:15] [SPEAKER_06]: Those were big ass cameras back then.

[01:00:18] [SPEAKER_06]: Those are huge. Yeah.

[01:00:19] [SPEAKER_06]: Loud, clunky. It was a feat.

[01:00:21] [SPEAKER_09]: I was really impressed with the camera work this entire episode.

[01:00:26] [SPEAKER_09]: And that was like, I mean, that comes like three quarters of the way

[01:00:30] [SPEAKER_09]: or more through the episode.

[01:00:31] [SPEAKER_09]: So it's like they are not out of tricks yet.

[01:00:34] [SPEAKER_09]: Like they just keep pulling things out of the bag.

[01:00:36] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, they do. Yeah.

[01:00:38] [SPEAKER_09]: I know he touched on it.

[01:00:40] [SPEAKER_06]: Again, that one of the parts I love about that scene where he

[01:00:46] [SPEAKER_06]: yells at Spock is the moment right afterwards, where he's like,

[01:00:49] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah, so we get here like because obviously in his Android brain,

[01:00:53] [SPEAKER_06]: he doesn't realize that that was out of character.

[01:00:54] [SPEAKER_06]: So he just plays the rest of the scene as if like it was a normal conversation

[01:00:58] [SPEAKER_06]: and it's done so well.

[01:00:59] [SPEAKER_06]: And I think that more than even just the half breed line is what cues Spock off.

[01:01:05] [SPEAKER_06]: He's like, you did not react like you had just said that to me.

[01:01:08] [SPEAKER_06]: Even more than saying that to me.

[01:01:10] [SPEAKER_09]: And you kind of ask me, like, is there a problem?

[01:01:13] [SPEAKER_06]: It's like, did you not just hear yourself? Right. Right.

[01:01:16] [SPEAKER_06]: It's so that it's just like three lines, but it's done so well.

[01:01:20] [SPEAKER_06]: And I love with Spock's rebuke at the end of the episode of The Kirk.

[01:01:23] [SPEAKER_07]: You should be like, yeah, that's why I had him say it.

[01:01:27] [SPEAKER_07]: That was the whole point.

[01:01:30] [SPEAKER_07]: You just got there late.

[01:01:32] [SPEAKER_09]: So that that scene only exists for Spock to be like, hey,

[01:01:36] [SPEAKER_09]: I don't like that. Yeah. Yeah.

[01:01:39] [SPEAKER_09]: Like, yeah, that is the purpose of that whole scene is him being like,

[01:01:43] [SPEAKER_09]: don't do that.

[01:01:45] [SPEAKER_09]: And if you ever say that to me face to face, I will nerve pinch the shit out of it.

[01:01:49] [SPEAKER_07]: And it's very meaningful that that was said back then, especially now

[01:01:53] [SPEAKER_07]: with how much Spock's life and identity is dissected every time

[01:01:57] [SPEAKER_07]: we get any new scraps of information about it.

[01:02:00] [SPEAKER_07]: But we did get some information we haven't even talked about yet

[01:02:04] [SPEAKER_07]: about George Samuel Kirk about his.

[01:02:08] [SPEAKER_07]: I mean, we mentioned a little bit.

[01:02:09] [SPEAKER_07]: It's like, yeah, we there's wife and three kids in his future.

[01:02:13] [SPEAKER_09]: That's pretty exciting. Yeah, I hope we don't meet them

[01:02:17] [SPEAKER_09]: because it will just make it hurt more to know

[01:02:21] [SPEAKER_09]: how it ends like I mean, spoiler alert them in Strange New Worlds.

[01:02:27] [SPEAKER_06]: Does he not have them waiting at home somewhere?

[01:02:30] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't remember that. Remember? Yeah.

[01:02:32] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't think they have come.

[01:02:34] [SPEAKER_06]: I thought he asked, I asked him about the family or something, but

[01:02:37] [SPEAKER_09]: oh, he may have like in season one, he may have said like right of the

[01:02:41] [SPEAKER_06]: pilot in the first episode.

[01:02:43] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I think so.

[01:02:44] [SPEAKER_06]: Or like the second or third one when they're talking about

[01:02:47] [SPEAKER_06]: the mustache or something.

[01:02:48] [SPEAKER_06]: But I'm sure our listeners will correct us.

[01:02:51] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, and please do.

[01:02:53] [SPEAKER_09]: But the other thing that they say about Sam in this, you know,

[01:02:56] [SPEAKER_09]: he's like George Samuel Kirk, only you call him Sam.

[01:02:59] [SPEAKER_09]: Like that's exactly the line they used in Tomorrow and Tomorrow

[01:03:03] [SPEAKER_09]: and Tomorrow, right? Yeah.

[01:03:05] [SPEAKER_09]: Because he's like, oh, yeah, I'm the only one that calls him that.

[01:03:09] [SPEAKER_09]: And. Well, on goes literally everyone calls him.

[01:03:12] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, well, I remember some people like we're pulling that out

[01:03:15] [SPEAKER_06]: and being like, how could they disrespect Ken and look at this line?

[01:03:18] [SPEAKER_06]: And I was like, yeah, Kirk thinks he's the only one who calls him that.

[01:03:22] [SPEAKER_06]: But he's like even right even before tomorrow and tomorrow, tomorrow.

[01:03:24] [SPEAKER_06]: That was easy to like, yeah, that feels like something Kirk would believe.

[01:03:27] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, right.

[01:03:28] [SPEAKER_09]: An older brother assumes that they're special.

[01:03:30] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah. And it's like you you're just a person.

[01:03:35] [SPEAKER_07]: It's OK. Got other friends. It's all right.

[01:03:37] [SPEAKER_07]: Speaking of other friends, we have one more call here from our buddy Newman.

[01:03:41] [SPEAKER_05]: Hi, open Pike Night Newman, the space hippie here from the Movies for Days

[01:03:46] [SPEAKER_05]: podcast. What an interesting episode.

[01:03:49] [SPEAKER_05]: So we've got Robo Kirk and duplicates

[01:03:53] [SPEAKER_05]: and he's fighting on the big Ruck Candy Mountain

[01:03:57] [SPEAKER_05]: and breaks off a big piece of stalactite.

[01:04:01] [SPEAKER_05]: But it also looks like a giant pink dick and it's got balls too.

[01:04:05] [SPEAKER_05]: This had to be intentional.

[01:04:06] [SPEAKER_05]: What are they doing with this episode?

[01:04:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Also, Ted Cassidy, who was Lurch on the Old Adams Family Show,

[01:04:13] [SPEAKER_05]: is here with astounding makeup.

[01:04:15] [SPEAKER_05]: I really love the design in this episode, the set.

[01:04:18] [SPEAKER_05]: It really looked pretty cool and pretty striking.

[01:04:21] [SPEAKER_05]: I always forget how TOS episodes are kind of like a little mini

[01:04:24] [SPEAKER_05]: horror movie where they just sit down on some planet

[01:04:26] [SPEAKER_05]: and something horrendous happens and they just get the fuck out of Dodge.

[01:04:30] [SPEAKER_05]: That's kind of what happens here.

[01:04:32] [SPEAKER_05]: And then Kirk has this weird back and forth with Spock where he's like,

[01:04:35] [SPEAKER_05]: hey, I called you a racial slur, but it was for the good of the story.

[01:04:39] [SPEAKER_05]: Don't get bent out of shape about it.

[01:04:41] [SPEAKER_05]: Such a weird note to end the episode on.

[01:04:44] [SPEAKER_05]: But admittedly, I need to watch more TOS.

[01:04:47] [SPEAKER_05]: I guess. Yeah, I guess that's all I've got to say about it.

[01:04:49] [SPEAKER_05]: At the end of it, I'm sitting here going, what did we learn from all of this?

[01:04:52] [SPEAKER_05]: And I mean, is it just as simple as like, yeah, you could make robots

[01:04:56] [SPEAKER_05]: that get rid of all the quote unquote bad parts of humanity.

[01:05:00] [SPEAKER_05]: But you can't do that without getting rid of all the good parts, too.

[01:05:03] [SPEAKER_05]: I have to remind myself this was the 60s,

[01:05:06] [SPEAKER_05]: you know, give them a little bit of grace.

[01:05:07] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that's what I've got. Fuck, I don't know.

[01:05:10] [SPEAKER_05]: Newman, the space hippie out.

[01:05:13] [SPEAKER_09]: Newman, just tons of salient points throughout again, as always.

[01:05:18] [SPEAKER_09]: Thank you so much.

[01:05:19] [SPEAKER_09]: And there's a couple things here that I have to agree with you 100 percent on.

[01:05:24] [SPEAKER_09]: First of all, the makeup on Ruck like and the feel of a TOS episode.

[01:05:30] [SPEAKER_09]: Like, you guys, this would absolutely work as a stage play.

[01:05:33] [SPEAKER_09]: And they would not have to change much.

[01:05:36] [SPEAKER_09]: Like the makeup would work on stage to make him look very gaunt and terrifying.

[01:05:42] [SPEAKER_09]: The costumes would work on stage because the audience would be forgiving.

[01:05:45] [SPEAKER_09]: Like, yes, it's a local theater, whatever. It's fine.

[01:05:48] [SPEAKER_09]: Like there's really kind of only two locations in this entire episode.

[01:05:54] [SPEAKER_09]: So it it really I actually kind of like to see it as a stage play,

[01:05:59] [SPEAKER_09]: just because I think it could be done really well.

[01:06:02] [SPEAKER_09]: Now, the other thing I'll point out here is

[01:06:07] [SPEAKER_09]: I don't know if there is specifically a moral here

[01:06:11] [SPEAKER_09]: other than what was just mentioned, because I think that's get that gets closest to it.

[01:06:17] [SPEAKER_09]: But if you take it in into consideration,

[01:06:20] [SPEAKER_09]: along with episodes like Court Marshall or The Ultimate Computer

[01:06:24] [SPEAKER_09]: and like eight other episodes of TOS,

[01:06:28] [SPEAKER_09]: there seems to have been this general like.

[01:06:34] [SPEAKER_09]: Attitude against automation and, you know, like how that can be dangerous.

[01:06:39] [SPEAKER_09]: It can cost people jobs.

[01:06:41] [SPEAKER_09]: It can really affect how society works.

[01:06:44] [SPEAKER_09]: So I'm guessing that it has something to do with that.

[01:06:47] [SPEAKER_09]: And like, you know, the the introduction of greater

[01:06:50] [SPEAKER_09]: automation into the workplace in the 60s, like I could see somebody,

[01:06:55] [SPEAKER_09]: you know, on the writing staff or even Gene Roddenberry himself being like,

[01:07:00] [SPEAKER_09]: we need to comment on this even if we don't give it a direct

[01:07:04] [SPEAKER_09]: like machine bad people good. Right.

[01:07:06] [SPEAKER_09]: Like there needs to be some hint of like, let's consider this

[01:07:11] [SPEAKER_09]: before we turn everything over to computers.

[01:07:14] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, this was written by Robert Block, who would go on to write Psycho.

[01:07:18] [SPEAKER_06]: So he was definitely

[01:07:20] [SPEAKER_06]: the novel, the novel psycho, I believe. Yeah.

[01:07:23] [SPEAKER_06]: And so, you know, he was definitely curious about human psyche.

[01:07:28] [SPEAKER_06]: I think I think there's a lot of really good sci fi ideas in this episode.

[01:07:32] [SPEAKER_06]: And I don't think a lot of them get as explored as they should,

[01:07:35] [SPEAKER_06]: but they all have their moments.

[01:07:36] [SPEAKER_06]: I really love the part where Corby is pleading to Christine

[01:07:40] [SPEAKER_06]: saying he's the same person.

[01:07:41] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes. That's that's a classic sci fi idea.

[01:07:44] [SPEAKER_06]: And Shrop is like, yeah, if you just transferred your consciousness

[01:07:47] [SPEAKER_06]: into something else, are they the same person?

[01:07:50] [SPEAKER_06]: I thought that was a great moment.

[01:07:52] [SPEAKER_06]: And yeah, just Star Trek does love their like, oh, you know,

[01:07:56] [SPEAKER_06]: what is great about humanity?

[01:07:57] [SPEAKER_06]: Like I'd say 80 percent of Star Trek episodes are like the search

[01:08:01] [SPEAKER_06]: for what makes humanity special.

[01:08:04] [SPEAKER_06]: And this is definitely falling into that.

[01:08:07] [SPEAKER_09]: And the answer is usually being William Shatner.

[01:08:10] [SPEAKER_09]: Yes. That's what makes humanity special.

[01:08:13] [SPEAKER_09]: And OK.

[01:08:15] [SPEAKER_09]: Here's the last comment I will make on the rock.

[01:08:20] [SPEAKER_09]: Do we think it's possible

[01:08:22] [SPEAKER_09]: that somebody on the production team just hated Shatner and was like,

[01:08:25] [SPEAKER_09]: watch this like I am going to get him to hold

[01:08:29] [SPEAKER_09]: the biggest dick on national television?

[01:08:33] [SPEAKER_07]: How could it not be? How could it not be?

[01:08:36] [SPEAKER_07]: Dicks are funny.

[01:08:37] [SPEAKER_07]: Dicks have been funny since since humans like humans

[01:08:41] [SPEAKER_07]: discovered that the dicks get hard.

[01:08:43] [SPEAKER_07]: They've been funny. So, yeah, it's it had to be intentional.

[01:08:48] [SPEAKER_06]: It feels like it did their sedimentary rock.

[01:08:51] [SPEAKER_06]: Is there something with smegam entry?

[01:08:54] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, it's pretty hard.

[01:08:56] [SPEAKER_07]: Leave it alone.

[01:08:59] [SPEAKER_07]: We're working on it.

[01:09:00] [SPEAKER_07]: All the slag tides are formed by slowly dripping from,

[01:09:03] [SPEAKER_07]: you know, right from the tip more and more over years and years.

[01:09:06] [SPEAKER_07]: So yeah.

[01:09:08] [SPEAKER_07]: Wow. We're making Jesse blush like Rob on Green shirt.

[01:09:12] [SPEAKER_09]: This is, I believe, one of the first episodes to be aired in color.

[01:09:18] [SPEAKER_09]: Maybe maybe specifically in the UK.

[01:09:21] [SPEAKER_09]: But point being, thought went into the color of this rock.

[01:09:27] [SPEAKER_09]: Like they decided, yes, we'll light the whole thing with pinks

[01:09:31] [SPEAKER_09]: and greens and purples, but this rock will physically be almost flesh

[01:09:36] [SPEAKER_09]: colored when he pulls it off the ceiling like.

[01:09:40] [SPEAKER_09]: And also how strong is correct to just tear a rock off the wall

[01:09:44] [SPEAKER_09]: or how terrible a choice of weapon is this?

[01:09:47] [SPEAKER_09]: Because it's clearly very, very well.

[01:09:52] [SPEAKER_09]: This rock brings up a lot of questions,

[01:09:54] [SPEAKER_07]: says it brings up a lot of things.

[01:09:59] [SPEAKER_09]: And my last question about this episode is.

[01:10:04] [SPEAKER_09]: Do you think that the Korby Android concept

[01:10:06] [SPEAKER_09]: will end up being connected to the Suh method,

[01:10:08] [SPEAKER_09]: considering how similar they are, grandpa?

[01:10:12] [SPEAKER_06]: Hmm, hmm.

[01:10:13] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I mean, you definitely think about that in this episode.

[01:10:16] [SPEAKER_06]: Although I was also thinking about the Institute and their synths because I

[01:10:22] [SPEAKER_06]: Replaying fallout 4 thanks to Marcy's who you've heard earlier podcasts. I will ride so check that out

[01:10:28] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, this definitely this reminded me of the Institute in the sense and not knowing if you are who you are

[01:10:35] [SPEAKER_07]: Or be the lurking boogie man of just being replaced like that

[01:10:40] [SPEAKER_07]: I it would be

[01:10:42] [SPEAKER_07]: interesting I

[01:10:45] [SPEAKER_07]: I

[01:10:45] [SPEAKER_07]: Don't want too much shoehorning into soon, you know

[01:10:48] [SPEAKER_07]: We're already we're already on that tightrope with new tracks

[01:10:53] [SPEAKER_07]: So it's like all right. We maybe we don't need to take another step along this we can just let each series be its own thing

[01:11:00] [SPEAKER_07]: But again, I just want the archaeological medicine. Yes, give us them like

[01:11:05] [SPEAKER_07]: Let's see this impressive important man who has changed the course

[01:11:10] [SPEAKER_07]: Again of how multiple species operate their health like systems in general like this man has made

[01:11:17] [SPEAKER_07]: intergalactic systemic health

[01:11:20] [SPEAKER_07]: Improvements, that's huge. That's as big as bringing whales back to save, you know

[01:11:27] [SPEAKER_07]: Planets like that's gigantic

[01:11:30] [SPEAKER_09]: Three things I think it would be intra

[01:11:45] [SPEAKER_06]: While you're thinking of it

[01:11:46] [SPEAKER_06]: I know this character has become a bit too much of a trope lately

[01:11:50] [SPEAKER_06]: But I mean I could definitely see Corby coming on like a Tony Stark time like super cocky

[01:11:55] [SPEAKER_06]: But also extremely charming and affable and just knows his shit and I'd kind of like to see that version of them

[01:12:03] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, he is affable. I would ask the heck out of that

[01:12:08] [SPEAKER_09]: I remembered my third point which is along these lines go check out the
