[00:00:02] Hello listeners, this is Producer John.
[00:00:04] Open Pike Night is going to be a Trek Long Island 2024.
[00:00:08] From May 31st to June 2nd, Cameron and myself, Producer John, will be in the Big Apple living
[00:00:13] long and prospering.
[00:00:15] We'll be hosting a panel, we'll be giving out stickers, we will have our microphones.
[00:00:20] Be sure to follow Open Pike on social media and subscribe to openpike.substack.com because
[00:00:26] we also will be giving away some Trek Long Island weekend passes.
[00:00:31] Trek Long Island is May 31st to June 2nd at the Hyatt Regency in Hop Og, New York.
[00:01:12] Welcome to Open Pike Night, the Strange New Worlds podcast where your personal logs are
[00:01:17] the prime directive.
[00:01:18] I'm your host, John T. Boulds, here tonight with my co-hosts and amazing guests on the
[00:01:23] Open Pike Night stage.
[00:01:25] We can't tell you who the guests are yet though, they're quite untold.
[00:01:30] Joining me tonight are my co-hosts, first up the man who would definitely jump ship
[00:01:34] to be a co-host of It's Got Star Trek, Jesse Bailey.
[00:01:38] Look if it were an option, that's all I'm saying.
[00:01:40] Look they made a very stinky sandwich on their most recent episode and ate it
[00:01:45] on the air.
[00:01:46] And I'm, you guys I'm feeling like we don't eat enough food on our podcast.
[00:01:50] Should we like start making food and eating it on the show?
[00:01:55] And now the man who wouldn't hesitate to ditch us for How Did This Get Made, host
[00:01:58] of Green Shirt, a newbies trek to the next generation, Cameron.
[00:02:01] Guys, I would never.
[00:02:05] Why have you heard something?
[00:02:06] Did Paul talk to you?
[00:02:08] Is this happening?
[00:02:10] And our guests tonight are a skilled podcaster and familiar voice in the Trek sphere
[00:02:13] and the Trek Long Island event runner.
[00:02:17] Working hard to interview cast and crew and working even harder to help organize
[00:02:21] the upcoming convention, please welcome Matthew Kaplewitz of the Trek Untold podcast and
[00:02:26] Stephanie Gengon of Trek Long Island.
[00:02:29] Hey, greetings.
[00:02:30] Greetings.
[00:02:31] Hello.
[00:02:32] Thanks for being here, guys.
[00:02:35] Let's start with Stephanie.
[00:02:36] What is your history with Star Trek?
[00:02:38] How did you end up running a convention?
[00:02:40] Yeah.
[00:02:41] So, you know, I like Star Trek, you see.
[00:02:42] It's like a show I like.
[00:02:46] I started the it's such a long story, but I'll give the quick one.
[00:02:50] I started a not-for-profit organization just after and during the pandemic called
[00:02:55] Library for the Kind, which is a not-for-profit focusing on children literature.
[00:03:01] And it started with mental health.
[00:03:04] It moved on to all different kind of reasons.
[00:03:06] Children's would be going through a hard time in their lives, whether it's gender
[00:03:12] culture or something that they have a hard time with their peers with.
[00:03:18] So I believe that all children should see themselves in a book.
[00:03:21] So I'm a big advocate of children's literacy and inclusion and diversity.
[00:03:27] So I want to start a convention.
[00:03:29] I want to do a huge fundraiser.
[00:03:31] Obviously, it's going to be Star Trek.
[00:03:33] What is Star Trek of diversity and inclusion?
[00:03:36] So I went for it.
[00:03:37] I love that. My daughter, her favorite thing in the world is to read.
[00:03:41] And she she picked it up earlier than I did as a kid.
[00:03:45] And so ever since she was, I don't know, probably two and a half.
[00:03:50] It's just been books every night, every single night.
[00:03:52] We just finished the Mo Willems.
[00:03:55] Yeah, yeah, the Mo Willems.
[00:03:56] We just did The Terrible Temper tantrums book right before bed.
[00:04:01] I really like I mean, I've even heard of that one.
[00:04:05] Man, it's it makes me feel better sometimes.
[00:04:08] I really like that mission, Stephanie.
[00:04:09] That's very cool. Excellent.
[00:04:11] And Matthew, how about you?
[00:04:13] Where where does your love for Trek start and end up on Trek Untold?
[00:04:17] Well, I started out as a TNG kid because that was my original era of Trek.
[00:04:20] So I was also pretty young when TNG first started airing.
[00:04:24] So I can remember it.
[00:04:25] But as I got older, I kind of left the world of Star Trek for quite some time.
[00:04:29] I would watch it.
[00:04:30] It was on reruns or if it was on a marathon here in New York on Channel 11.
[00:04:34] But for the most part, I ended up coming to Star Wars kid.
[00:04:37] And then I started doing other things and getting into other interests.
[00:04:40] And I would say probably around like I think it was
[00:04:43] 2015, I want to say where I was at New York Comic Con.
[00:04:46] And I saw this like bargain bin of the old playmates toys.
[00:04:49] And I was like, oh, I I'm I want all these.
[00:04:52] I didn't have all these as a kid.
[00:04:54] Wait a minute. I can now afford them because I'm an adult with adult money.
[00:04:56] So I ended up just buying like literally that day.
[00:04:59] I think it was over a dozen Star Trek figures
[00:05:01] I didn't know and as a kid, she left them all the way back
[00:05:03] from the Javits Center to Queens.
[00:05:05] And that kind of started to like rekindle things for me.
[00:05:07] And I just kind of started to snowball from there
[00:05:10] because then I started to like get caught up on all the Star Trek that I missed,
[00:05:13] you know, as a little kid.
[00:05:14] So continued today and then best forward to the pandemic
[00:05:18] early 2020 when all this stuff was happening.
[00:05:21] And I had had an idea back in 2019 to do a podcast or something.
[00:05:26] And just timing energy wise couldn't really make it happen.
[00:05:29] But it was a similar concept of what would now become Trek and told.
[00:05:32] And lo and behold, 2020, the world has gone to horrible, horrible places.
[00:05:37] And everybody's got a lot more free time all of a sudden.
[00:05:40] So I jumped on that and I was like, hey, now is like the perfect time
[00:05:43] to do this podcast idea.
[00:05:45] And here I am now, like over 170 episodes later, I think.
[00:05:48] Four years later, still going and still doing interviews
[00:05:52] as much as I can, talking to all the folks who make Star Trek go.
[00:05:56] That's fantastic.
[00:05:58] Yeah. Have you actually had a pack led?
[00:06:01] I am the pack led.
[00:06:05] I make podcasts good.
[00:06:07] Trek and told is strong.
[00:06:09] I'm very strong.
[00:06:10] Audio levels never peak. Good audio.
[00:06:13] If you're at the table and you don't know who the pack that is,
[00:06:15] you're probably the pack.
[00:06:17] That's good.
[00:06:18] Yeah, we're going to hear more from both of you about Trek, Long Island
[00:06:21] and your work on it specifically.
[00:06:22] But Cam, you want to explain why we are all here tonight?
[00:06:25] You came up with this great idea.
[00:06:28] Yeah, absolutely.
[00:06:29] So, you know, we had a big crossover episode in Strange New
[00:06:31] Worlds recently in season two with lower decks crossing over.
[00:06:35] We just thought it would be fun to imagine, you know,
[00:06:36] if our strange new world characters were to cross over into another
[00:06:39] Trek series themselves, which ones would be fun to see each character
[00:06:43] kind of interact with.
[00:06:44] So that's what we're here to discuss.
[00:06:46] No reality.
[00:06:47] We can we can send people into TOS or the animated series
[00:06:50] with the original actors, whatever we want to do.
[00:06:52] Sky's the limit.
[00:06:53] Before we get started, I want to say, I think the answer is
[00:06:56] every character should get a T.A.S. episode personally.
[00:07:02] Bring back T.A.S.
[00:07:03] I mean, come on, it's our what if seriously.
[00:07:05] We are going to first hear from one of our callers.
[00:07:07] We put out the call to our listeners and we asked them for their input
[00:07:12] and we got lots of different responses.
[00:07:15] So I figured we'd go with our first caller who gave us
[00:07:18] lots of different responses.
[00:07:20] Here is Zo.
[00:07:22] Open Pike Night.
[00:07:23] This is the USS Cinema Captain Zo Richardson commanding.
[00:07:26] I am coming to you with my suggestions for crew reassignment.
[00:07:31] So I have Lieutenant Nuneen Soon
[00:07:34] reporting to the 1701 Enterprise with Captain Kirk commanding.
[00:07:40] That will be interesting.
[00:07:42] I have Lieutenant Sam Kirk reporting to the animated version of 1701
[00:07:49] because it would be nice to see what happened to him
[00:07:51] after he left Enterprise with Captain Pike.
[00:07:54] Speaking of Pike, he and Pelleo
[00:07:57] will be reporting to the Enterprise NX01
[00:08:02] because Pelleo is probably there already and Pike's presence
[00:08:05] there will be interesting.
[00:08:06] Lieutenant Commander Hema should report to the Disco
[00:08:09] because it would be nice to see his insight on Spore Drive.
[00:08:12] Lieutenant Ahura will report to Enterprise D
[00:08:15] because a weapons officer should not also be the communications officer.
[00:08:19] M.Benga reporting to DS9 because it's frontier medicine, man.
[00:08:25] Voyager will have both Lieutenant Ortega's and Nurse Chapo
[00:08:28] because they'll get home a lot faster that way.
[00:08:31] Lieutenant Chin Raleigh will report to the Ceratose
[00:08:34] because I think that she and Commander Random has something going on.
[00:08:39] And what's left is Prodigy and Lieutenant Spock will report there
[00:08:43] because where has Spock not been?
[00:08:47] It seems that he's been a Puer.
[00:08:49] Those are my suggestions. Cinema out.
[00:08:52] That actually brings up a good point that we do need to address upfront
[00:08:56] just to be able to make sure everyone got two characters
[00:08:59] that did leave one character hanging.
[00:09:01] And Jesse made the good point that Spock has already been in enough series
[00:09:05] that we can probably leave him off this.
[00:09:06] Not only that, but every series that doesn't have Spock
[00:09:10] has a character that's, I mean, let's be honest,
[00:09:13] pretty much designed to do what Spock does, right?
[00:09:16] Be that almost human outsider who's always trying to find their humanity.
[00:09:20] But let's be clear, we love Spock and we think Ethan Peck
[00:09:23] should play him for a very long time.
[00:09:26] I got to say, though, Zo, man,
[00:09:28] you continue to kill it with the calls and you made some really good picks.
[00:09:33] Those are some excellent picks.
[00:09:35] Yeah. Having Hemmer on disco like that would be the most
[00:09:40] tension filled engineering bay in the entire series
[00:09:44] between him and Stamets.
[00:09:45] Are you kidding me? Like, oh, man, now I really want to see that.
[00:09:49] Throw some Reno in there, too.
[00:09:50] Oh, boy. Oh, there's going to be some hardcore
[00:09:53] suncatsi action going on there.
[00:09:55] Seriously, man.
[00:09:58] Great. So yeah, we're going to go around the room and each
[00:10:01] give our first picks.
[00:10:03] And I chose Matthew to start us off tonight.
[00:10:06] We were each assigned two characters.
[00:10:08] I don't think any of us knows who the other people have.
[00:10:11] So, Matthew, who is your first pick and where are they going?
[00:10:16] All right. So first one that I got
[00:10:18] is long. I got on a very exciting one there because, man,
[00:10:24] you know, just listening to Zo right there, it's like everybody's
[00:10:26] going to have such different answers.
[00:10:27] And that's what's really fun about this.
[00:10:29] Like I wasn't expecting anything that they just said.
[00:10:31] And yeah, as far as Lon, I felt like
[00:10:34] they would fit in really well in Deep Space Nine.
[00:10:38] That was kind of like what I was thinking.
[00:10:39] I was like, how can I challenge the person I have?
[00:10:41] Not just like find a place where they're going to do well and excel
[00:10:43] in, but also like what the place is going to challenge them.
[00:10:46] And I feel like with Lon on Deep Space Nine,
[00:10:49] that's kind of like perfect to throw her something
[00:10:53] that she's familiar with.
[00:10:54] But also we're going to give her what she needs.
[00:10:57] So, you know, it's going to be war torn,
[00:10:59] Cardassia versus Bejor versus the founders.
[00:11:01] It's going to be a triple threat cage death match.
[00:11:04] And now you've got Lon there who is, you know, trigger happy,
[00:11:06] ready to go, but still trying to find herself and learn about who she is.
[00:11:09] And one of the things that we know about her from a time
[00:11:12] when Stranger New Worlds is that she's really been seeking out
[00:11:15] a kind of parental figure, whether it's a maternal or if it's maybe
[00:11:18] perhaps a sisterly kind of figure too.
[00:11:20] And that's why her and Una have kind of melded together so well.
[00:11:24] So I want to see how Lon would do with
[00:11:28] kind of the conflicting ideologies, let's say, of like
[00:11:31] Kira, Narise and Jazzy, a Dax.
[00:11:33] Yeah, because both those are characters who went through a lot of growth.
[00:11:37] But they're also on opposite ends of the spectrum.
[00:11:39] I think when it comes to, let's just say, co-parenting Lon here,
[00:11:41] I'm going to say that way.
[00:11:43] They're going to both want to take her under the wing.
[00:11:45] She's this young hotshot, right?
[00:11:46] Who is really good at what she does, but still needs a lot of guidance.
[00:11:49] And, you know, I think Kira is going to give her like more passion,
[00:11:53] help her with the passion, help her controlling her rage.
[00:11:56] And I think Jazzy is going to also help focus it more,
[00:11:58] but also help her reach her inner self a lot better.
[00:12:02] So that's really what I want to see.
[00:12:03] Plus, it'll be just fun to see her interact with like Cisco,
[00:12:06] you know, like see how she's going to handle something like Cisco,
[00:12:09] because we haven't quite seen Pike full on in war mode
[00:12:11] just yet in strange new worlds.
[00:12:14] Maybe we're getting there, who knows?
[00:12:15] But, you know, I think seeing her interact with Cisco would be really interesting.
[00:12:19] And I also just want to see her like like she's going to hate Quark
[00:12:22] and that's going to be amazing.
[00:12:24] I think then by default, by default, that means her and Odo could be best friends.
[00:12:28] Oh, oh, man. Very fun.
[00:12:30] Matthew, you just set the bar really high for all these going forward.
[00:12:33] That's all excellent.
[00:12:35] And now I also just very much want to see Lon in the is it the Alamarine game?
[00:12:39] What's the name of the game?
[00:12:40] Oh, yeah.
[00:12:42] She would have no patience for that.
[00:12:44] Yeah. He's going to punch so many people in that bar
[00:12:46] and she gets out of that game.
[00:12:49] Palm strikes for everybody.
[00:12:51] I feel like there's a chance she'd also immediately be like,
[00:12:54] well, this is clearly the second chap.
[00:12:56] So what do we need to do?
[00:12:57] Like she would just know right away.
[00:12:59] Like, here's how you operate his own.
[00:13:00] Yeah. Yeah.
[00:13:02] She wants to win. She plays to win.
[00:13:05] You get the most spirited Alamarine ever, by the way, just keep
[00:13:08] her actually doing the hopscotch game like she would be so in that damn thing.
[00:13:12] Oh, there's no gore level.
[00:13:13] No gore level.
[00:13:14] This is better. I can do it better.
[00:13:16] Let me do it again. Yeah.
[00:13:19] You guys, La'an meeting Kai win like.
[00:13:24] Oh, this is an excellent pick, Matthew.
[00:13:27] Very, very much so.
[00:13:30] I'll go next. My assigned character, my first one
[00:13:33] was Chapel and I actually also picked Deep Space Nine.
[00:13:38] Not only not just because of the the wartime experience,
[00:13:43] but honestly, I was kind of picturing more
[00:13:46] that and after like I could picture her staying on Deep Space Nine
[00:13:51] after the after the series wraps up and helping rebuild Bajor
[00:13:55] and helping, you know, maybe finding a peaceful place where she could
[00:13:58] because she she does like adventure.
[00:14:00] She does like exploring.
[00:14:02] She does like learning new things.
[00:14:03] And I feel like for her,
[00:14:06] the mix of both the wormhole and the,
[00:14:12] you know, we got the orbs.
[00:14:14] We got a bunch of stuff Cam hasn't even seen yet
[00:14:16] with the mystical side of Deep Space Nine, the prophets, everything like that.
[00:14:21] I think she would have a great time just on the station.
[00:14:25] And I think she would really find a place to be at peace
[00:14:29] with whatever she needs to and work to to help Bajor rebuild.
[00:14:34] And she might cause a sudden musical number in Quarks,
[00:14:37] and we could all see Quark saying, Oh, man.
[00:14:40] You know, Quark has pipes. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
[00:14:44] Chapel would also be another great foil, I think, to Julian,
[00:14:47] because we know at least in the first few seasons, he really loves to,
[00:14:52] you know, try to flirt with women that are not interested in him.
[00:14:55] And I feel like that would come up.
[00:14:57] I would pay to see Chapel and Bashir. Oh, yeah.
[00:15:01] Oh, yeah. That would be some of the worst,
[00:15:02] worst hitting on ever a character.
[00:15:04] He would not know how much to do with Chapel,
[00:15:07] especially if she turned the tables and started hitting on him.
[00:15:10] You know, he'd stammer all over the place.
[00:15:12] Oh, yeah.
[00:15:14] And then she'd dump them.
[00:15:16] Yep. Oh, yeah.
[00:15:18] Cameron, you are up next.
[00:15:20] All right. Well, let's see.
[00:15:23] My first one I got, and I was really hoping to get this one.
[00:15:25] My favorite Sam Kirk.
[00:15:27] I just love Sammy Kirk and I don't want to take him too far out of his timeline.
[00:15:32] So I do want to see him with the original crew, right?
[00:15:35] We want to see him kind of see Spock and her
[00:15:37] and see how far they've come and totally take credit for mentoring her
[00:15:41] to the lieutenant she becomes.
[00:15:43] I think he'd get along really well with Bones and like
[00:15:46] they would throw back some drinks and make jokes about Spock.
[00:15:48] And I'd love to see those two characters together.
[00:15:52] You would, of course, also have this great dynamic with his brother, Jim,
[00:15:56] who would be so ecstatic to see his brother alive after finding him dead.
[00:15:59] But we also know Jim knows time rules and you don't break time rules.
[00:16:03] We know that from Subspace Rhapsody.
[00:16:06] So he wouldn't tell Sam why he's so happy.
[00:16:08] And Sam would just be really confused, like,
[00:16:10] you've never been this nice to me. What's what's going on here?
[00:16:13] So I think there'd be a lot of really great drama there.
[00:16:15] But I want to get super specific about this placement.
[00:16:18] I don't want to see him in TOS.
[00:16:20] Let's move them up to the movie timelines.
[00:16:23] We want to see him with old Jim, right?
[00:16:25] We want to hear him like call his brother old man and like make jokes
[00:16:28] about how different he looks because he looks awfully different
[00:16:30] than the Jim he remembers.
[00:16:32] But let's get even more specific than that.
[00:16:34] I want to put him in not just the voyage home.
[00:16:36] I want to put him at around one hour, 48 minutes into the voyage home
[00:16:40] after the crew has returned from the 80s
[00:16:43] and they are in their disciplinary hearing.
[00:16:45] Sam appears and he doesn't know what's going on,
[00:16:48] but he sees his brother up there getting disciplined
[00:16:50] and like hearing about all this crazy shit his brother's been up to
[00:16:54] and his just reaction being like, what did you do, Jim?
[00:16:56] This is classic Jim.
[00:16:58] And then, of course, Kirk ends up becoming a captain
[00:17:02] and getting a ship at the end of that disciplinary hearing.
[00:17:04] And that would just drive Sam crazy.
[00:17:07] And then he goes and finds Kirk after, you know, Kirk's done.
[00:17:09] He's congratulated. He sees his brother.
[00:17:11] He sees his brother alive and they go up.
[00:17:13] And Sam was like, yeah, you know, I just time traveled here
[00:17:15] like 30 years, 30 year time travel. What have you been up to?
[00:17:18] And of course, Jim would have to one up him with 300 year time travel
[00:17:22] that he just got back from saving the earth.
[00:17:25] And then it would all end with Sam being like, whales?
[00:17:29] You got fucking whales because he's a xenobiologist.
[00:17:31] He's never seen a whale.
[00:17:32] They're all extinct when he where he comes from.
[00:17:34] So of course, he'd go see the humpbacks and have a grand old time.
[00:17:37] So that's that's my Sam Kirk crossover.
[00:17:40] I like it. And I like the specificity.
[00:17:42] I know, you guys know me.
[00:17:46] I would like to see Sam Kirk in the motion picture.
[00:17:49] I think he would really get a kick.
[00:17:52] Yeah. And he would get a kick out of Vager.
[00:17:55] Like that is the most alien
[00:17:58] sort of life form that they had encountered in the movies.
[00:18:02] You know, so it's like that would be a field day for Sam.
[00:18:05] And I feel like he would maybe help them connect a little quicker.
[00:18:09] So he might be slightly plot breaking in that role, but I
[00:18:12] I really like that pic cam.
[00:18:14] And I feel like there's not enough mustaches in TOS.
[00:18:19] True.
[00:18:20] That's very true.
[00:18:21] Definitely in very well in the motion picture, though,
[00:18:23] like those pajamas were made for that mustache.
[00:18:24] That's right. Yeah.
[00:18:26] Oh, man.
[00:18:26] Him and disco bones.
[00:18:27] They're going to get a scene.
[00:18:29] Oh, this is this whole episode is just going to make me sad
[00:18:33] that we're not getting these crossovers, you guys.
[00:18:37] All right.
[00:18:38] Let's hear from another couple of our callers.
[00:18:40] First up, we have our friend Abby.
[00:18:43] Hey, hey, open pike.
[00:18:44] It's Abby Summer from the first flight podcast.
[00:18:47] So excited to get to do my idea of a crossover.
[00:18:50] And I'm going to do a legit one.
[00:18:51] And then I'm going to add a tiny cheat because I can't help myself.
[00:18:54] But OK, I really want Erika Ortega's
[00:18:58] to go and chat up and play around with Kayla Dettmer from Discovery.
[00:19:03] Now, this could possibly maybe they know each other back at the Academy.
[00:19:07] I mean, the timelines line up before the discovery jumps.
[00:19:10] So possibly they know each other.
[00:19:12] But I also would like to see Ortega's
[00:19:15] take on that future tech and those new morphing ships
[00:19:18] and see what she can do with all that, because we all know
[00:19:21] more take us is deep in all of our hearts.
[00:19:23] And I think that would be super fun.
[00:19:25] And I think that Michael would be a good commander for her.
[00:19:28] I mean, Burnham has the the humor and the empathy
[00:19:32] that I think would really let her shine.
[00:19:33] Now, if I could really do what I wanted to do,
[00:19:37] I would take all of our best pilots.
[00:19:39] I would pull Travis Mayweather.
[00:19:41] I would pull Tom Paris.
[00:19:43] Let's get Sulu going on.
[00:19:44] Let's get everybody in and let's do a Mario Kart style
[00:19:48] Star Trek race like that.
[00:19:49] That's what I want.
[00:19:50] Let's bring everybody in and have it be just a flat out drag race.
[00:19:54] It'd be super fun.
[00:19:55] So hope this finds all of you well, and we'll talk soon.
[00:19:59] All right. Thank you, Abby.
[00:20:00] I am just going to throw in.
[00:20:03] I will only accept that Mario Kart race if O'Brien is driving Deep Space
[00:20:06] Nine because technically he did pilot in piloted in the pilot.
[00:20:10] So I still think you can.
[00:20:13] Can I just mention how sad it is that across the many
[00:20:16] Star Trek video games we have had, we have never had a proper kart racing game.
[00:20:21] Yeah. Right.
[00:20:22] I like not even a rip off of the pod racing game from Star Wars.
[00:20:28] Make the ships small, put them in a weird energy ribbon.
[00:20:31] If only that existed somewhere in the Star Trek universe.
[00:20:34] Right. Like, come on.
[00:20:36] Why? Why? Why?
[00:20:37] And why are so many Star Trek games just not about the fun?
[00:20:41] I mean, Dominion War on PC is amazing because you get to fly around in the ships.
[00:20:44] That's all cool. Right. But like we want a race.
[00:20:47] I've been watching all these soap soap box car racing lately
[00:20:51] and now thinking inspiration maybe Trek Long Island soap car racing.
[00:20:56] How cool would that be?
[00:20:58] That would be very cool. Very cool.
[00:21:01] We need a bigger hotel, Matt.
[00:21:04] One of the gamut says we're doing 20, 25.
[00:21:07] We're doing on the roof.
[00:21:08] Yeah. Two weeks out.
[00:21:11] Change the details.
[00:21:12] It's over. We're changing it all.
[00:21:15] Blank slate. Let's go.
[00:21:17] All right. Let's hear from our next caller here is Sin Sarah.
[00:21:20] What's up, Open Pike Night?
[00:21:21] It's Sin Sarah.
[00:21:23] I was 100 percent bluffing when I said I wouldn't call in
[00:21:26] until Jesse watched Die Hard one, two and three.
[00:21:29] But then I missed so many opportunities to call in that
[00:21:32] I felt like I had to commit to it.
[00:21:35] Thankfully, the subject of this particular call in was enough
[00:21:38] to bring me to surrender and happily surrender.
[00:21:41] Because then we get to talk about how I think more tagus.
[00:21:45] Yes, more tagus should be brought into either,
[00:21:50] if not Discovery Season five at the very end of it,
[00:21:53] whatever new show is going to take place in the 29th century after that.
[00:21:57] Because we don't talk about her in the canon that exists beforehand.
[00:22:01] And I think that's because she was blasted forward in time.
[00:22:05] And wouldn't it be awesome
[00:22:08] if she ended up not only being the pilot,
[00:22:11] but eventually the captain of the ISS Enterprise
[00:22:14] that is 100 percent going to be refit with 29th century technology?
[00:22:19] We just know it. I know it.
[00:22:20] Jesse knows it. It's going to happen.
[00:22:23] And then they'll become the new calvary ship
[00:22:25] that drops in to save the day for everything.
[00:22:27] Hell, I think they'll even drop in and save us,
[00:22:29] save the Discovery crew from the Breen,
[00:22:32] because the Breen will have some kind of tech
[00:22:33] that doesn't affect multiverse enterprise.
[00:22:39] I think that's all for me.
[00:22:40] I want to see more tagus and more things like we all do.
[00:22:43] Live long, prosper and die hard.
[00:22:48] Oh, I've got a machine phaser now.
[00:22:51] I haven't I still haven't watched the movies, Steve, I'm sorry.
[00:22:54] But I I do have to ask, how do you think
[00:22:58] Ortegas would get along with Washburn, the pilot of the Serenity?
[00:23:03] Because I mean, if we're doing crossovers, right,
[00:23:06] let's do some crossovers here, man.
[00:23:08] I know that's something that makes you jump up and shout.
[00:23:11] So just a question that I'm going to put into the ether
[00:23:14] and not provide an answer for.
[00:23:17] All right. Well, after those fantastic calls,
[00:23:21] Stephanie, it is your turn for your first pick.
[00:23:24] Not going to remember since so long.
[00:23:27] I'm going to start with Hemmer because he's my favorite ever.
[00:23:30] I love Hemmer. I love Bruce.
[00:23:32] I love them like they're two people. I love them.
[00:23:35] So I think when I think of Hemmer, he's like an onion
[00:23:40] with like, you know, like Shrek.
[00:23:43] And it should be in every series that is adorned with wharf.
[00:23:50] I just feel like him and wharf would just have this connection
[00:23:53] because both of them, they want to be one way.
[00:23:56] But, you know, but they really have to act rough.
[00:24:00] But then they go to Candy Mountain together.
[00:24:02] And then everything's so wonderful.
[00:24:04] And and so I'm picturing like the end of Deep Space Nine.
[00:24:08] Wharf is like, you know, doing his thing.
[00:24:10] They leave and he finds Hemmer.
[00:24:12] And then they they become these friends at the end
[00:24:15] and they develop into like these two like hippies almost.
[00:24:19] I don't know. I just see something there.
[00:24:21] Wharf and Hemmer.
[00:24:23] Is this a new ship now in the franchise?
[00:24:25] Yeah, it is.
[00:24:26] We're creating all these series after this.
[00:24:30] This hemorrhoid or whammer?
[00:24:32] No, we don't talk about doing that.
[00:24:38] They're both very private people.
[00:24:40] OK, man, yeah, that really makes me want to see
[00:24:45] like how Hemmer would be with season three Picard's Wharf,
[00:24:48] you know, like after we have been 30 years of them like that.
[00:24:53] That's why I just picture the end of Deep Space Nine
[00:24:56] when Wharf is like, I'm ready to find myself.
[00:24:58] And you know, I always pitch him go to Candy Mountain.
[00:25:00] And he just he finds Hemmer and then Picard happens.
[00:25:06] I really like that. That's amazing.
[00:25:10] I also feel like like not in a bad way or anything,
[00:25:13] but DS 9 is getting a lot of love here.
[00:25:17] I'm interested to see how many of these characters end up at DS 9.
[00:25:21] And it may actually it may influence the order in which I share my picks.
[00:25:26] Oh, work is going to love all the new customers.
[00:25:30] Oh, heck yeah.
[00:25:31] And that's the thing is every single one of them would would get along
[00:25:33] fantastically with work.
[00:25:35] There's definitely profit to be made from time travel.
[00:25:38] Oh, yeah. Yeah.
[00:25:39] Because from time travel, Jesse, we are now at the end of our first round
[00:25:43] and you are our final pick.
[00:25:45] OK, so I was secretly assigned
[00:25:50] two characters, as was everyone else.
[00:25:52] And I think the first one that I'm going to go with is Pellia.
[00:25:57] And I think Pellia would make a good impact on Voyager
[00:26:03] for a lot of reasons.
[00:26:06] You know, let me just go ahead and take my cheap shot here.
[00:26:10] Voyager needs a little more fun and Pellia brings the fun.
[00:26:16] OK, that's all there is to it.
[00:26:18] And can you imagine the relationship in engineering
[00:26:22] between Torres and Pellia like Pellia is a queen of patience
[00:26:28] and like kind of a laissez faire attitude and like,
[00:26:31] everything is going to work out.
[00:26:33] It'll be fine. Like, don't worry about it.
[00:26:35] And Torres is kind of the opposite of that when we first meet her.
[00:26:39] And I think it would add another layer of that Starfleet
[00:26:43] slash Maki headbutting that's going on at the start of Voyager.
[00:26:48] But you get it from a character who's not necessarily like
[00:26:52] the most buttoned down Starfleet officer.
[00:26:54] She just in Starfleet right now. Right.
[00:26:58] And I think Pellia could just provide kind of a more,
[00:27:03] I guess, relaxed counterpoint for a lot of characters on the show.
[00:27:07] She'd be maybe one of the few people
[00:27:09] not really in a hurry to get back to the Alpha Quadra.
[00:27:12] Like, I have been there. I've done that.
[00:27:15] I've met those people like, let's just take our time.
[00:27:17] It's going to be OK. Right. Because she's got plenty of time.
[00:27:22] But she would also fit nicely into some mentor roles,
[00:27:25] like, for example, Seven of Nine or, you know,
[00:27:29] those kids that I won't talk about right now because I'm not sure
[00:27:32] if Cam knows about them.
[00:27:34] But you've got Naomi Wildman. Right.
[00:27:36] Like, I think it would be a great mentor filter
[00:27:40] path down from Pellia to some of these other characters.
[00:27:44] I can picture her having a great relationship with Tuvok.
[00:27:49] He's our first full Vulcan character in a main cast.
[00:27:53] And we know that Pellia loves Vulcans.
[00:27:56] We know she has a history with their people.
[00:27:59] I feel like, again, she's a great counterbalance
[00:28:02] to the energy that Tuvok brings.
[00:28:04] And she could she could soften him in key moments
[00:28:07] when maybe he needs it.
[00:28:08] And, you know, maybe he could provide some structure for her
[00:28:11] in moments when she refuses to acknowledge that maybe she needs that, too.
[00:28:15] I just again, lots more fun.
[00:28:19] And that hair on that bridge.
[00:28:22] I am totally here for Pellia on Voyager.
[00:28:27] And and I know it's also a cheap shot, but I would just picture
[00:28:29] she never gets Harry Kim's first name right ever.
[00:28:34] She's calling him Henry and Hank and like all these other names.
[00:28:38] Yeah, I could dig that.
[00:28:40] All right. That's the end of our first round of picks.
[00:28:42] And those are some fantastic picks.
[00:28:44] We did have some write ins Griffin, who I believe is a new contributor.
[00:28:48] Welcome to the open pike night stage, Griffin.
[00:28:50] He chose to Paul and moving to Paul into strange new worlds.
[00:28:55] This one could actually happen given lifespans.
[00:28:57] I think it'd be fascinating to see her interactions with Spock.
[00:29:01] He'd likely be seeking some level of reassurance
[00:29:03] with regards to Vulcan discipline and logic only for her to tell him.
[00:29:07] Logic is only the beginning of wisdom, not the end.
[00:29:11] Having drawn on her own experiences in Starfleet with Archer.
[00:29:14] And I like that.
[00:29:15] I like I like a little bit of the like we said,
[00:29:17] we had lots of different takes on our call to action for this episode.
[00:29:20] But man, our colors and new contributors
[00:29:24] like Griffin have stepped up and we really appreciate it.
[00:29:27] Spock into Paul dealing with Vulcan discipline, just
[00:29:30] I put a different image in my head, but I don't hate it.
[00:29:34] Well, to your point, Cameron,
[00:29:36] I think just by her presence alone,
[00:29:39] to Paul would create additional intrigue where to bring is concerned.
[00:29:44] Right. Like we know to bring is having her doubts.
[00:29:47] We know Spock is having his doubts.
[00:29:49] We know that he's going to have this unbearably long three
[00:29:53] month absence from Nurse Chapel.
[00:29:56] Maybe to Paul could help him kind of get over that a little bit like, hey, man,
[00:30:00] you think three months is a long time.
[00:30:02] Try four ish years.
[00:30:04] Yeah. Yeah.
[00:30:06] All right. Well, we're going to talk now a little bit about
[00:30:10] the work you guys are doing on Trek Long Island.
[00:30:12] But we actually have a caller about the conventions.
[00:30:16] We'll listen. We'll hear from Matt and then we'll get into
[00:30:18] talking about Trek Long Island. Here we go.
[00:30:22] Hey, open pike, it's Matt at Law Dog Safety on Socials, spelled D.A.W.G.
[00:30:27] And hello to Matthew and Stephanie.
[00:30:30] I'm a relatively new Trekkie and very new to cons.
[00:30:33] But these are now a few of my favorite things.
[00:30:36] I have found that conventions and now interactive Trek podcast like this one
[00:30:40] are great outlets for fans to connect with other fans.
[00:30:44] It just fuels excitement.
[00:30:46] And my experience has been super fulfilling.
[00:30:49] So I'm a researcher and an event planner in my own professional space.
[00:30:52] And I have a question about survey research for cons.
[00:30:56] Attendees almost always have the opportunity to provide feedback
[00:30:59] through a survey after convention.
[00:31:02] And I'm curious to know how conventions use that feedback.
[00:31:05] If you have any experience in doing so,
[00:31:08] how would you capitalize on the positive feedback?
[00:31:10] How would you filter through the negative feedback
[00:31:12] but use criticism constructively?
[00:31:15] OK, fun part. As for crossover, I want to see Hemmer in Enterprise.
[00:31:20] I need some dialogue between Jeffrey Combs as Shran
[00:31:23] and Bruce Horek as Hemmer.
[00:31:24] And I want to see some headbutting between Tucker and Hemmer.
[00:31:28] How does this crossover work? No clue.
[00:31:31] I just want to see it.
[00:31:32] Also, bonus, I really want to see Anson Mount's Pike in an episode of Doctor Who.
[00:31:37] Imagine those brilliant facial reactions
[00:31:40] in response to the wackiness of a Whovian universe.
[00:31:43] Thanks all. Live long and prosper.
[00:31:45] Killing it, Matt.
[00:31:46] And I got to ask, did any of you watch the most recent episodes of Doctor Who?
[00:31:51] Yes, I did.
[00:31:52] Because it feels like this is totally possible now, Matt.
[00:31:55] I don't know if you're geeking out how I geeked out at that one little line.
[00:31:59] Actually, there was a few things in that episode.
[00:32:00] I freaked out with you.
[00:32:01] Oh, man. And the uniforms and just, oh, it can happen.
[00:32:05] It was in the comics. This can happen.
[00:32:08] Oh, I have those issues.
[00:32:10] It's happening. I'm sitting on the shelf.
[00:32:12] Yeah. Like great call, Matt.
[00:32:15] Excellent.
[00:32:16] So, yeah, with the attendee research, how does that work?
[00:32:19] Well, at the end, I'll go out and I'll just I'll just ask straight out.
[00:32:22] I like talking to people.
[00:32:24] I'd rather somebody just on Facebook to say, just give me the information.
[00:32:29] Bad.
[00:32:32] Give me a bad review is fine.
[00:32:34] I want that because then I know what to fix.
[00:32:36] Something as simple as everybody's like, you needed a T-shirt vendor.
[00:32:40] Guess what? I have a T-shirt vendor this year and I just do the best I can.
[00:32:43] There's certain things that can't be changed, but I don't ignore anybody.
[00:32:47] And I don't understand why there are conventions that just won't tell people why.
[00:32:52] I just tell them why.
[00:32:53] I'm like, well, I can't do this because blah, blah, blah, blah.
[00:32:55] And then like, oh, if you just tell somebody, then it's no big deal.
[00:33:00] So that's how I deal with any bad positive feedback.
[00:33:03] Of course, I love that.
[00:33:05] But I like the negative better because I can work with that
[00:33:09] and I can, you know, learn from it and.
[00:33:12] Give people what they want.
[00:33:14] And I want to mention to like, you know,
[00:33:16] I wasn't involved in the con last year in the way I am this year.
[00:33:19] Last year, I was just an attendee.
[00:33:21] And the way that I got involved this year in 2024 was actually
[00:33:24] because I offered constructive feedback to Stephanie and other people
[00:33:28] in charge at the time.
[00:33:29] And I was like, hey, like this was my experience.
[00:33:32] There was good and there was bad.
[00:33:34] And I'd like to see if I can maybe help you guys fix the bad.
[00:33:37] And that's what happened. That's how I got involved.
[00:33:39] And it really is because, you know, you really do want to have
[00:33:41] that open kind of feedback from everybody.
[00:33:43] You know, that goes not just to the folks who attend the show,
[00:33:46] but also internally.
[00:33:47] So, like, you know, you guys are going to come into join us
[00:33:50] in a few weeks as well.
[00:33:51] And like, you know, we're going to want to know after the show is over
[00:33:54] or even prior during the show, I'm going to ask you guys like, hey,
[00:33:56] how's it going?
[00:33:56] We want to know what's happening, what we can change for next year,
[00:33:58] because this is still a growing convention.
[00:34:00] This is all year two.
[00:34:02] And I think to be honest, you know, from from where it looked
[00:34:05] like it was last year to where it is this year,
[00:34:06] I think Stephanie can agree or disagree with me.
[00:34:08] But I feel like it's worlds apart from from how they were in year one.
[00:34:12] Oh, world apart. Oh, my goodness.
[00:34:14] It's a lot more organized, a lot more organized.
[00:34:16] Have a my staff is amazing.
[00:34:18] I mean, seriously, see, Matt goes and complains and I make him work for me.
[00:34:21] That's how it works.
[00:34:23] If you're going to complain, I'll put you to work.
[00:34:25] She's not kidding. I had no choice.
[00:34:28] You could take that shackle off now.
[00:34:30] You can take that shackle.
[00:34:31] Thank you, ma'am. Thank you. In three weeks.
[00:34:33] Check is in the mail.
[00:34:34] What are what are some of the biggest changes
[00:34:36] you're excited about from last year to this year?
[00:34:39] A bigger vendor room. I like that.
[00:34:41] But you know what?
[00:34:42] Bigger vendor room means the stage is going to be a little smaller.
[00:34:45] But I had learned last year.
[00:34:47] The room never really got full full because people go to so many different things.
[00:34:51] It's like five things going on at a time.
[00:34:53] So you can't expect the room to get that full.
[00:34:55] So I'm looking, why do I have so many chairs?
[00:34:57] I might as well just have more vendors and be with spread out a little more
[00:35:01] than I have meet and greets this year.
[00:35:03] We're we're working on another one that I can't say yet,
[00:35:06] but we are working on another one.
[00:35:07] But the Armand Shimmerman run already sold out.
[00:35:11] We're adding what else we added, man. Help me out here.
[00:35:13] I don't remember anything.
[00:35:14] We have the admirals as part of it.
[00:35:15] So we're going to have Clyde, Kusatsu, Natalia, Nogalich and Conrad Coats.
[00:35:20] And they're going to be doing a meetup as well.
[00:35:22] We also have a strange new worlds meetup.
[00:35:24] So we have one of our headliners is Melissa Navia.
[00:35:26] Another headliner is the TV, Vodaki.
[00:35:28] They're going to be together doing a meetup.
[00:35:30] And again, they're also going to be part of panels.
[00:35:31] They're going to be signing autographs all weekend and meeting everybody.
[00:35:34] So, you know, like one thing we said earlier was like how
[00:35:37] Trickling Island is a much more intimate kind of convention.
[00:35:39] You know, that's the word.
[00:35:40] A lot of people might say it is small.
[00:35:42] And yes, that is accurate.
[00:35:43] It is a small convention.
[00:35:45] But that's a great thing because small means intimate,
[00:35:48] intimate means you can go to this convention and number one,
[00:35:50] you're not going to pay San Diego Comic Con prices.
[00:35:53] You're not going to pay New York Comic Con prices.
[00:35:54] You're not going to pay Galaxy Con prices.
[00:35:56] You're going to pay small convention prices.
[00:35:58] That includes the stars who are coming to it.
[00:36:00] They're not going to charge the same that they're going to be
[00:36:02] at one of these bigger events.
[00:36:03] That's why everybody was asking me like, oh, how much they charge
[00:36:06] in for autographs?
[00:36:07] I never know until the day of the event because they look at the place,
[00:36:10] they look at where they're at, and then they decide the price.
[00:36:12] So all I could say is if you were at Vegas and it was that much
[00:36:15] is less than that.
[00:36:16] I don't know.
[00:36:17] It's a very fluid kind of experience.
[00:36:19] And not only that, too, like we say intimate, meaning that you can really
[00:36:22] spend time getting to know people.
[00:36:23] That's learning really tricky is enjoy that any kind that they go to,
[00:36:26] whether it is like a mission or Vegas or just like a general comic
[00:36:29] on, you want to meet and essentially want to network with your own fans.
[00:36:33] You've got a lot of opportunities to do that show like this
[00:36:35] because you're going to see the same faces again and again.
[00:36:37] You're going to make friends online.
[00:36:38] You're going to make friends just wandering around.
[00:36:40] And you're also going to have that intimate face time
[00:36:43] with the guests that we have.
[00:36:45] You're not going to get that in Vegas.
[00:36:47] You're not going to get that in a place like New York Comic Con,
[00:36:49] where there's 25000 people a day coming in those doors.
[00:36:53] Last year, I spent 10 minutes with David Ajala
[00:36:55] and I could have spent longer, but I felt bad.
[00:36:57] I was taking up his time chatting like 10 minutes of Doug Jones.
[00:37:01] And that's like a dream come true.
[00:37:02] I guess that's wild.
[00:37:04] You can have a go. I just went to the bar.
[00:37:06] Evan just hung out at the bar with everybody.
[00:37:08] And everybody's like, what is you seriously hanging out with us?
[00:37:12] Because it's more like that.
[00:37:13] They know that when they go on the floor, they're not going to be bombarded
[00:37:16] with people. It's just not like that.
[00:37:18] They can. They went shopping.
[00:37:20] Some of them went shopping like, you know what?
[00:37:21] I want to go shopping in the vendor hall.
[00:37:23] And they went, do you ever see that at Comic Con?
[00:37:26] No, that's awesome.
[00:37:27] And I think another big change to point out is
[00:37:30] we have a bigger focus on a lot of creative is also, I mean,
[00:37:33] we have a focus on not just the celebrities of Star Trek,
[00:37:35] but also a focus on, number one, science.
[00:37:38] So that's the thing we had last year, but we're continuing that as well
[00:37:40] here in this year.
[00:37:42] We also have like a big emphasis on creativity.
[00:37:45] So that can be artists, because this year we have like an artist section
[00:37:49] with a lot of really great people.
[00:37:50] We have Kavita Maharaj, who is an amazing painter.
[00:37:53] You guys might have seen her on social media.
[00:37:54] She does gorgeous work.
[00:37:56] Talk about Trekking Dr.
[00:37:57] Wu, by the way, we have J.K.
[00:37:58] Woodward as well, who did the covers for those many, many
[00:38:01] Star Trek comics, but also the Dr.
[00:38:03] Who Star Trek crossover.
[00:38:04] He did at least one, if not both of those.
[00:38:06] And then we also have podcasters this year in a much bigger way.
[00:38:09] Like, you know, last year, Stephanie was really smart to have podcasters
[00:38:11] be a part of it this year.
[00:38:13] I came up more to help out with that.
[00:38:14] It was one of my duties.
[00:38:15] And I was like, like, let's really open this up and let's start
[00:38:17] pulling in more diverse voices and diverse types of podcasters.
[00:38:20] So we've got folks like open Pike Night.
[00:38:22] We have folks like the Dura sisters coming this year.
[00:38:25] We have the sci fi sisters come back.
[00:38:26] We have big sci fi podcast.
[00:38:28] We have podcasters not just from the tri-state area, but we have people
[00:38:31] now flying in for this.
[00:38:32] And you guys are helping us a ton, too, because like,
[00:38:35] you guys know the space.
[00:38:36] You guys know what you're doing.
[00:38:37] So we can also trust you.
[00:38:38] We just basically throw you the microphone like, hey, off you go
[00:38:40] to the races, gentlemen.
[00:38:41] So, yeah, that's kind of the big difference, too, is like we really are.
[00:38:44] You know, when Stephanie says on the website, it's a fan run
[00:38:47] fan made experience. It's absolutely true.
[00:38:49] That's what it is. Yeah.
[00:38:50] I mean, having not been last year, I can say like,
[00:38:53] that's the difference I've noticed from other conventions is, you know,
[00:38:55] we've we've reached out to other conventions been like, hey,
[00:38:58] we're podcasters, we'd like to be a part of your show
[00:39:00] and just like crickets or a slam door.
[00:39:03] And so funny. Yeah.
[00:39:04] Why would you think that you literally are professionals?
[00:39:08] Like, why would they not?
[00:39:10] We're asking to promote their show for free, basically.
[00:39:12] Yeah. Come in and for free, like moderate.
[00:39:15] And yeah. And so for you guys to be like, sure, not only
[00:39:18] can you have a booth, but you can have a panel and you can moderate
[00:39:21] with the actors and like that was amazing.
[00:39:23] So, yeah, I mean, I'm super excited for my Star Trek Long Island. Yeah.
[00:39:27] And not to like disparage other conventions or anything, but like
[00:39:32] everyone has been to the big conventions and seen a panel
[00:39:35] hosted by somebody whose job is clearly to host panels. Right.
[00:39:38] Like this is not the biggest Star Trek fan in the world
[00:39:41] talking to your favorite Star Trek people.
[00:39:43] This is somebody whose job is to ask very,
[00:39:49] you know, out of the can convention questions and things like that.
[00:39:52] And it's just it's not that it's bad.
[00:39:54] It's just that it gets samey after a while.
[00:39:57] And, you know, you're going to hear the same 15 stories on panels
[00:40:01] forever when you have that, because they're asking the same questions.
[00:40:05] And, you know, another thing that I really like about your approach here
[00:40:09] and something that you mentioned, Matthew, is like.
[00:40:13] Trek fans, a lot of Trek fans, I would say the majority of Trek fans
[00:40:18] really just want to make things better for Star Trek. Right.
[00:40:22] And so for you to come up with, you know, creative criticism
[00:40:26] that actually can help the show and for Stephanie to
[00:40:30] you know, recognize this is the kind of person that we want.
[00:40:34] We want fans who are willing to work to make this a better experience
[00:40:38] for other fans like there's nothing more Star Trek than that.
[00:40:41] And I definitely applaud you both for that.
[00:40:43] I think that's really, really cool.
[00:40:45] Well, thank you.
[00:40:46] I want to say that that's all Stephanie, because I'm like,
[00:40:48] you know, way down the food chain here.
[00:40:50] Stephanie is top of the food chain.
[00:40:51] She's the animal for a reason.
[00:40:52] But that's what survives that.
[00:40:54] That's true. Stephanie is like you sacrifice so much to make this con go.
[00:40:57] You did it last year. You're doing again this year.
[00:40:59] Hopefully we do it in the future.
[00:41:01] But it all this year.
[00:41:03] And she lost her voice, by the way, if it was wondering as she was at,
[00:41:05] she was actually out promoting the show and her voice went missing
[00:41:08] in Canada somewhere.
[00:41:09] So there are Canadian fans here, by the way, please return it to Stephanie.
[00:41:13] A lot of wilderness up there, man.
[00:41:14] I don't know.
[00:41:15] Probably got it. You never know.
[00:41:17] It starts at the top.
[00:41:18] And then Stephanie is like an example of that.
[00:41:20] So we kind of just follow what she does.
[00:41:23] And that's the truth.
[00:41:23] So and by the way, if I can hijack your show for one more moment,
[00:41:27] I am Zadi.
[00:41:28] Have you guys mentioned what you guys are doing at the show?
[00:41:31] I we've mentioned it in passing,
[00:41:35] but I think this is a good place to really talk about more.
[00:41:38] Yeah, we've got we're returning our
[00:41:41] our theories and queries panel.
[00:41:42] If you remember, we had a live show last year at Fan Expo.
[00:41:47] Fan Expo, Portland. Yeah.
[00:41:49] And so we're bringing that back.
[00:41:50] We're going to be talking, you know, based on the scant information
[00:41:53] we have about season three, we're going to speculate wildly
[00:41:56] on what we hope to see next season and, you know, pose our questions
[00:42:00] that are left hanging and see what people think.
[00:42:03] Well, of course, I have calls for that and may have a couple of special callers.
[00:42:07] Keep your ears out.
[00:42:09] What else have we got, John?
[00:42:11] We have the podcasters panel, right?
[00:42:14] Saturday morning. Yeah.
[00:42:15] And then we are also hosting the discovery.
[00:42:20] Just read the name. I just let's fly.
[00:42:23] It's called Let's Fly.
[00:42:24] And it's a look back at all of Discovery.
[00:42:27] You guys, it's not a secret.
[00:42:29] I'm not making it to this year's Trek, Long Island.
[00:42:32] My heart is breaking.
[00:42:33] And a big part of that is because you guys are going to be sitting on stage
[00:42:36] with Locke, Torena and all manner of Discovery
[00:42:41] actual cast members talking about Discovery like I'm
[00:42:46] I'm very jealous, but in the most magnanimous way, of course.
[00:42:49] And I know that you guys are going to kill it.
[00:42:51] And yeah, I just, you know,
[00:42:54] hearing about the opportunities that are afforded to independent podcasters
[00:42:59] is just another point in the column for Star Trek, Long Island.
[00:43:03] Like Cameron was mentioning, like in Las Vegas, we're like,
[00:43:06] hey, we'd love to do a panel.
[00:43:08] And they're like, sorry, we don't do that.
[00:43:09] And then, you know, we come to find out like, oh, they do that
[00:43:12] for like the top two or three Star Trek podcasts in the world.
[00:43:17] But it's like, you know, hey, it's not that we're bad at our jobs.
[00:43:21] We're just not we haven't been on the air for nine years or 15 years.
[00:43:25] Right. Like, so yeah, that's that's just another really cool thing
[00:43:29] that Trek, Long Island does.
[00:43:31] And you don't have that paramount money. Yeah.
[00:43:33] Neither do I.
[00:43:35] Matthew reached out and very excited to tell me about the Discovery panel.
[00:43:38] And I thought it was cool.
[00:43:39] Like, oh, wow, he wants us to moderate a panel. That's great.
[00:43:42] Got some actors. I don't really recognize any of them.
[00:43:44] And then we watched season five, started watching season five.
[00:43:48] And my excitement level went through the roof at that point.
[00:43:51] Yes. Lock and oh, everyone, everyone.
[00:43:54] I cannot wait to talk to you.
[00:43:55] Tell you a story about that really quick.
[00:43:57] So last year, you know, I was looking for guests, whatever, and everything.
[00:44:02] I get a message from this guy, Elias, and he's like, hey, you know,
[00:44:06] do you want to I'd love to come to your convention, blah, blah, blah, blah.
[00:44:09] And I'm like, I'm like, man, I already have all my guests already.
[00:44:13] But, you know, if I win the Powerball, I swear I'll call you.
[00:44:16] He's like, no problem at all.
[00:44:17] He's like, but I'll tell you now, you're going to want me next year.
[00:44:19] Like, yeah, good.
[00:44:24] He's so nice.
[00:44:25] Oh, nice.
[00:44:25] I'm with him. Oh, my God.
[00:44:27] What a nice guy.
[00:44:29] I think he's shooting for a Sean Bean type career,
[00:44:31] because I've seen him die on screen three times now in his in his career
[00:44:36] twice in the same show.
[00:44:38] So, yeah, that's like in his bio on social media, too.
[00:44:42] Like I'm a guy who dies on TV.
[00:44:45] He's totally living the life for, you know, a certain number of episodes.
[00:44:49] You got to have career goals, right?
[00:44:51] Yeah. Yeah.
[00:44:52] And then finally, also very excited to say that Green Shirt will have a presence.
[00:44:56] Rob from Green Shirt is coming to join John and myself.
[00:44:58] And we are going to do a T&G panel on Friday night.
[00:45:02] Main stage, we will be talking about.
[00:45:04] We're right on after the farewell to Discovery panel.
[00:45:07] So we kind of wanted to kind of look at T&G through a Discovery lens.
[00:45:11] So we're going to imagine if T&G had had season long arcs like Discovery,
[00:45:16] which episodes from T&G would we have like to have seen stretched into a full season?
[00:45:20] So kind of like this, we're going to have a lot of fun
[00:45:23] just like speculating on some what ifs.
[00:45:25] Yeah, I was going to.
[00:45:26] Spoiler alert.
[00:45:30] Spoiler alert, I'm sure Fistful of Data's is on there.
[00:45:32] Don't lie to me.
[00:45:35] I do. I know you got I've got a I've got one that's going to surprise you.
[00:45:38] I think it's going to surprise people.
[00:45:41] There's some really strong panels across the board this year.
[00:45:43] I'm really excited.
[00:45:44] It's going to be tough for fans because they're going to pick.
[00:45:46] And I'm happy I can just kind of float around.
[00:45:48] I'm not going to sit in every single panel.
[00:45:50] I'll be I'll be doing the boot stuff as well.
[00:45:51] But like, man, it's going to be a fun year this year.
[00:45:54] There's some really great stuff.
[00:45:55] I might be biased, but there's some good stuff.
[00:45:58] I've had a handful of fans already.
[00:46:00] I've had discussions about cloning themselves.
[00:46:03] So I think that might be another thing next year.
[00:46:05] Matt, we're going to have to work on cloning technology.
[00:46:08] At least a time travel booth.
[00:46:10] Yeah, I was working on that machine from Family Matters.
[00:46:13] Now, there you go.
[00:46:15] So everybody also becomes cooler.
[00:46:17] Just Stefan's everywhere.
[00:46:19] Yeah. Yep.
[00:46:20] I know Family Matters that well anyway.
[00:46:25] Yeah, man, we're looking very forward to the convention.
[00:46:29] And it is impressive the amount of work that you guys are putting into it.
[00:46:33] And your whole crew, it's I hope when when all is said and done,
[00:46:38] that you all get the appreciation you're due because you are working so hard.
[00:46:45] And if you're listening to this right now, very close to release day
[00:46:49] and you're thinking, wow, I'd really love to go to Star Trek, Long Island.
[00:46:53] I don't know if I can afford passes.
[00:46:55] Let me tell you, you can because you can win two of them from Open Pike Night.
[00:46:59] Just check out our prompt.
[00:47:01] What Star Trek crime did you commit?
[00:47:04] And our favorite answer will get two passes to the show.
[00:47:08] I've been reading them. They're very funny.
[00:47:12] And with that, I think it's time for our second round
[00:47:14] picks for our crossover episodes.
[00:47:18] And I shook up the order a little bit.
[00:47:20] So, Stephanie, we're going to start with your second pick.
[00:47:23] Thank goodness, because my voice will be gone by the end of this.
[00:47:26] I appreciate it.
[00:47:28] So my second person is a horror.
[00:47:31] So I know everybody's saying deep space nine, but seriously,
[00:47:36] the perfect price, a horror,
[00:47:39] did Zia Dax and Kiran or you put them together, let them hang out,
[00:47:44] you know, poor like her is working so hard all the time.
[00:47:48] You see her in
[00:47:49] it's been a strange new world, just study, study, study.
[00:47:53] And the original series now she relaxes more,
[00:47:56] but she's still with the guys, give her some girls that hang out
[00:47:59] and do her thing, you know, and see her at the bar.
[00:48:03] I think Quark will be.
[00:48:04] She'll be the only one who can be given free drinks to because she
[00:48:07] could be just she just know how to play him, you know?
[00:48:11] And she walked by that dark board right in the middle.
[00:48:14] You know, I think she'd be so smooth.
[00:48:17] I love her.
[00:48:18] I can totally see her walking out of that hollow suite
[00:48:20] with the Renaissance princess hat on and, you know,
[00:48:24] straight up to the bar and taken no guff from Quark like.
[00:48:28] Yeah.
[00:48:29] And Morin steps up in his like Renaissance night outfit
[00:48:32] because he was in the hollow suite, like they do an adventure with her.
[00:48:35] Like she's going to be best buds with Morin for sure.
[00:48:38] Oh, yeah. Only talks to her.
[00:48:39] Yep.
[00:48:41] That's a really good pick.
[00:48:42] And yeah, Jadzia, I mean,
[00:48:44] Jadzia plus fill in the blank is a great combination, right?
[00:48:48] Like she could really help her learn how to relax.
[00:48:51] I think that's an excellent.
[00:48:53] I was just watching that episode yesterday where she's helping
[00:48:57] Kira relax in the holodeck as a two trail man there.
[00:49:01] She's like, no, no, no, they're not real.
[00:49:03] Whatever. It's like I wanted a horse there with them just hanging out.
[00:49:07] Yeah. Fantastic choice.
[00:49:09] All right, Cam, you are up next.
[00:49:12] All right, guys, I think we're going to have to pivot here.
[00:49:15] So first of all, I didn't actually want to get this person
[00:49:18] because it was so much pressure, but I've got Erika Ortega's
[00:49:22] and I got all the pressure of picking our
[00:49:26] the patron saint of our podcast and finding a place for her.
[00:49:29] I had two ideas and I'm going to pivot because I had gone with DS 9.
[00:49:33] I think we filled up DS 9.
[00:49:35] Honestly, a lot of the reasons Matthew kind of echoed with Laan.
[00:49:39] I will just say that I do think Bashir would hit on her
[00:49:43] and then she'd have some quip and then they become besties.
[00:49:45] I think Bashir would kind of be the the chapel fill in for her.
[00:49:49] I think they would totally be friends like that.
[00:49:52] But instead, I'm going to revert and go with
[00:49:56] take inspiration from both Abby and Steve.
[00:49:59] And say, let's put her in disco.
[00:50:02] I love the idea that her and Deborah were buddies.
[00:50:05] And so what I'm imagining is she kind of like
[00:50:09] she's wondering what happened to Debra, because right,
[00:50:11] there's all this hush hush about the discovery.
[00:50:13] And she's trying to ask Pike and Una like, hey, what have you?
[00:50:15] Were there? What happened?
[00:50:16] What happened to my buddy?
[00:50:17] And they, of course, are being hush hushed,
[00:50:19] but they're not very good at being that hush hush.
[00:50:20] So they're dropping they're dropping some breadcrumbs
[00:50:23] and she's picking those up.
[00:50:24] And then I mean, she's going full like conspiracy theorists over in her bunk.
[00:50:27] She's got red string.
[00:50:29] She's following it.
[00:50:30] She's trying to dig in.
[00:50:31] She's got people like siphoning through the the archives.
[00:50:35] And finally, she figures out like she finds some way
[00:50:38] that transports her to the future.
[00:50:40] And I mean, Steve frickin nailed it with the she ends up piloting
[00:50:44] captaining the ISS Enterprise.
[00:50:46] I mean, you can't do better than that.
[00:50:47] So I'm going to say that is a group effort
[00:50:51] choice for Ortega's going to disco.
[00:50:54] OK, we got to we got to ask.
[00:50:56] Let's just go around the horn really quick.
[00:50:59] Abby proposed a race between all the Star Trek pilots.
[00:51:04] Who do you guys think would win?
[00:51:06] Like if it's a cart race, right, like Mario Kart style,
[00:51:11] who is going to win this race?
[00:51:13] We got Sulu or Tagus Mayweather, Paris,
[00:51:15] Detmer, O'Brien driving Deep Space Nine,
[00:51:19] arguably data, arguably Wesley.
[00:51:21] I know. I had David Wesley.
[00:51:22] Yeah. Incident, everybody to the enterprise.
[00:51:25] Yeah.
[00:51:27] Well, I mean, who's going to get the blue turtle shell?
[00:51:28] That's what I want to know.
[00:51:29] That's right. Right.
[00:51:30] I mean, who's going to know how to use it the best?
[00:51:32] I think the DS nine is going to withstand it the best.
[00:51:35] Yeah. Yeah.
[00:51:36] Brian's going to beat everybody because he's just really.
[00:51:38] Yeah.
[00:51:39] I'm going to make sure he beats everybody.
[00:51:41] He's tinkering with all the carts before the race.
[00:51:43] Yep. Like I was going to say, it comes in O'Brien or Ortega's for me.
[00:51:47] And yeah, I think I think O'Brien takes it out.
[00:51:49] I think O'Brien takes it.
[00:51:50] Yep. Just DS nine rolling along.
[00:51:53] Yeah. But then Ortega.
[00:51:55] Yeah. But that's how they're going to stop and get a drink together.
[00:51:58] Ortega's and O'Brien.
[00:51:59] Like, you know what? Stopping a drink.
[00:52:00] They go right.
[00:52:01] And Paris slips on by.
[00:52:03] Yeah. Paris.
[00:52:04] I hesitate to say that Ortega's wouldn't win anything involved with a race.
[00:52:09] But like, come on, Paris, he's going to cheat.
[00:52:12] He's going to find some way that he's going to end up winning.
[00:52:16] I mean, we basically started our entire social media presence
[00:52:21] by calling Ortega's the cooler Tom Paris.
[00:52:23] And I stand by that 100 percent.
[00:52:26] But Tom Paris is not without his skills.
[00:52:28] And one of those skills is finding a way to win.
[00:52:31] And spoiler alert, he's been in races in space before.
[00:52:35] Yeah, that's true.
[00:52:36] A lot of experience.
[00:52:38] Now O'Brien knows that he could talk to Quark.
[00:52:41] Who could get the Delaney sisters?
[00:52:44] 100 percent. Yeah.
[00:52:46] Yeah. And maybe you handicap Paris by putting Harry Kim on his team.
[00:52:50] I think that's the only fair way to do it.
[00:52:54] So we've mentioned Ortega showing up in the ISS
[00:52:57] Enterprise enough at the end of Discovery.
[00:52:59] All I keep picturing is it done in the exact same style as the end of
[00:53:03] Battlestar Galactica with Starbucks showing up out of nowhere
[00:53:06] after supposedly being dead and Jimi Hendrix playing in the background.
[00:53:11] Spoiler alert, geez.
[00:53:14] I know that did not spoil it because it still doesn't make sense.
[00:53:17] Oh, trust me. Yeah, that's that's not how the show ends, Jesse.
[00:53:21] It just gets crazier from there.
[00:53:23] So yeah, we're forgetting one key variable here, though.
[00:53:26] And that's the Proto Star.
[00:53:27] Can't forget the crew.
[00:53:28] Oh, yeah.
[00:53:30] I was looking it up and I don't know who the pilot technically is.
[00:53:34] I mean, they can all just squeeze in there or just have Murph do it.
[00:53:37] Yeah. Yeah.
[00:53:38] Murph would win.
[00:53:39] That's the end.
[00:53:40] When he would Murph or zero or honestly rock talk, because like
[00:53:45] they all have the mind for it.
[00:53:47] And you're totally right, Matthew.
[00:53:48] Like when it comes to pure speed,
[00:53:51] Proto Star has got to be at the top of the list.
[00:53:54] That's true.
[00:53:55] I mean, it depends what course they're doing.
[00:53:56] If they're doing Rainbow Road, I wouldn't give it to them
[00:53:57] because they're just going to fall off the track.
[00:54:00] If we're talking like something more straightforward
[00:54:02] like maybe Coupa Castle, I mean, maybe.
[00:54:04] Oh, there you go.
[00:54:05] Now, there was a Hanna Barberos wacky races that took place in space.
[00:54:08] Right.
[00:54:09] That's exactly pretty much what we're talking about.
[00:54:11] Yeah, we're talking.
[00:54:11] We're talking Star Trek, right?
[00:54:12] Pack your racers. Yes. OK.
[00:54:14] Yeah, absolutely.
[00:54:15] We know that some Star Trek writers listen to open Pike Night.
[00:54:19] Just consider this your open invitation to take any of these ideas.
[00:54:23] We promise not to sue.
[00:54:24] We know that you guys try to steer away from stuff like that, but like
[00:54:28] just give us more fun Star Trek and make it animated.
[00:54:31] Damn it.
[00:54:33] And we do actually have a call from our good friend Peter.
[00:54:38] Hi, it's Peter.
[00:54:40] Hope all is well with everyone.
[00:54:42] I was thinking about your topic of putting a strange
[00:54:44] new world character in another Star Trek show.
[00:54:48] And I'd like to propose putting Hemer on lower decks as a training hologram.
[00:54:52] Yes.
[00:54:52] Continuing the tradition started with Holo Janeway in Prodigy.
[00:54:57] Hemer was a good mentor to Cadet Yhura in season one,
[00:55:00] and I think his direct and tough love style would help the lower deckers
[00:55:04] continue their education and advancement in Starfleet.
[00:55:08] He would not be a replacement for the Cerrito senior officers
[00:55:12] like Freeman, Ransom, Ta'ana, Shaxx or Billups,
[00:55:15] but would provide alternative views if the lower deckers
[00:55:19] want to get advice or bounce ideas off of someone who is not in the chain of command.
[00:55:25] The humorous tone and style of the show can also contrast with Hemer's
[00:55:29] personality, which would be another source of some jokes.
[00:55:34] Just some food for thought.
[00:55:35] Have a great time at Trek Long Island and take care.
[00:55:38] Live long and prosper.
[00:55:39] That's a really good pick, Peter.
[00:55:42] Yeah, like just the pacifism of Hemer
[00:55:46] juxtaposed with Shaxx, juxtaposed with Billups.
[00:55:50] Like, you guys, we just spoke to Bruce Horak again.
[00:55:54] Go back and check him out in the feed.
[00:55:57] The guy needs to be voice acting in every Star Trek,
[00:56:01] especially every animated Star Trek going forward for time in memorial.
[00:56:05] In my opinion, I there are no wrong answers to a prompt like this,
[00:56:09] and that's why I really like it.
[00:56:11] Excellent, excellent choice with this prompt, Cameron.
[00:56:14] Yeah, I can also thank you.
[00:56:15] I could also see Mariner definitely making the
[00:56:19] the Hemer spin off that we had come up with Bruce.
[00:56:22] Yeah, his brother Hammer.
[00:56:23] What's the opposite of pacifism?
[00:56:25] Me. Yeah.
[00:56:27] As one of her holodeck therapy movies, like,
[00:56:31] oh, my God, I want it so bad.
[00:56:35] This is so much fun.
[00:56:37] All right. So my second character was Mbenga
[00:56:40] and I was very excited by that because I love him.
[00:56:43] Benga, he's one of my favorite characters, like maybe one B to Ortega's one A.
[00:56:47] And it was hard because Mbenga,
[00:56:52] much like Ortega's is the kind of character that could go anywhere
[00:56:55] and have a great impact in the Star Trek universe.
[00:56:58] I was initially attempted to throw him onto the enterprise
[00:57:02] because I feel like he's kind of the opposite of flocks.
[00:57:05] And flocks is my favorite enterprise character.
[00:57:08] And I think it would be great balance there.
[00:57:10] But I'm going to have to fall into the rut and shout out
[00:57:14] Zo because I'm sending Mbenga to Deep Space Nine.
[00:57:18] He would be a great balance for Julian in sick bay,
[00:57:21] especially for the first few seasons when Julian has his, you know,
[00:57:24] bright eye, bushy tailed frontier medicine, as Zo had mentioned.
[00:57:29] And he's like, yeah, everything is great.
[00:57:31] It's starfully we're having so much fun helping people.
[00:57:34] And Mbenga just provides the exact opposite energy. Right.
[00:57:38] Like, yes, I'm here to help people, but I'm also here to do a job.
[00:57:41] I think he would fit in really well on a space station
[00:57:45] where Starfleet restrictions aren't always the mandate.
[00:57:49] If you know what I mean, he knows when to bend and even break some of the rules.
[00:57:53] I think he would make a great veteran friend for Miles, who like, yeah,
[00:57:59] we love Julian and Miles hanging out. Right.
[00:58:02] But we love them because they're so different from one another.
[00:58:05] Let's give Miles somebody that he can really relate to on a very similar level.
[00:58:10] Right. Like Starfleet soldier style veteran.
[00:58:13] I think Mbenga would be great for that.
[00:58:16] And he kind of understands much like Miles comes to learn
[00:58:21] that not every issue is just black and white. Right.
[00:58:23] There are always shades of gray and Starfleet itself
[00:58:27] can leave a lot to be desired.
[00:58:29] And I think that that's something that Miles would really identify with.
[00:58:32] Yeah, he'd also be able to relate really well to Cisco
[00:58:36] as far as familial loss goes like Cisco has lost some people and.
[00:58:42] Man, Mbenga has lost some people and it tore my heart out completely.
[00:58:46] And even though I love the Elysian Kingdom
[00:58:48] and I'm going to probably watch it again when we're done here.
[00:58:51] But like he would really be able to offer just another kind of
[00:58:54] confidant for Cisco to talk to outside of Jedzia, who has, yes,
[00:58:59] lost people in her seven lifetimes,
[00:59:02] but has kind of had seven lifetimes to learn how to deal with that
[00:59:05] and is a little more like, hey, man, everything's going to be OK.
[00:59:08] You know, time marches on.
[00:59:10] It's not that she dismisses those losses.
[00:59:12] It's just that she has a longer view to look at.
[00:59:15] And I think Mbenga would really provide
[00:59:19] that more immediate understanding of what it's like to lose family members
[00:59:23] and to deal with some of the militant hardships of Starfleet's past,
[00:59:27] especially when you consider Wolf 359.
[00:59:30] He'd also be just a ton of fun to watch in Quarks bar.
[00:59:35] I'd love to see him interact with Odo.
[00:59:38] Neither of them really are characters
[00:59:40] I think that Mbenga would take too seriously, so it would just be
[00:59:44] really fun to watch.
[00:59:45] But he would also understand where both of those characters are coming from.
[00:59:50] You guys, is DS 9 like a really good Star Trek series?
[00:59:54] Yeah, it's like it's like I think it's clear we're like the best
[00:59:57] in Star Trek series. Yeah.
[00:59:59] Also, he'd be a great sparring partner for war, maybe for a while.
[01:00:03] Yeah. Yeah.
[01:00:04] Hopefully, hopefully, as well. Yeah.
[01:00:07] Yeah. And if it doesn't, he could patch him up. Yeah.
[01:00:11] I just really want to hear O'Brien and Mbenga talk about war food.
[01:00:15] Oh, yeah. Yeah. All their favorite rations.
[01:00:18] Yep. Exactly.
[01:00:20] All right. We have our last caller for the night.
[01:00:23] Here is Melanie.
[01:00:26] Hi, Obenpike Knight.
[01:00:28] This is Melanie from Germany again.
[01:00:30] So I would have loved to choose Captain Pike for this episode,
[01:00:34] but I couldn't find a plausible explanation
[01:00:37] for why he has to be the one and where he should go.
[01:00:40] OK, after much consideration, I would pick Laan.
[01:00:44] I love tomorrow, tomorrow and tomorrow.
[01:00:46] Enter into action with James Kirk.
[01:00:48] Yeah, I would put Laan in the original series on the Enterprise under Kirk.
[01:00:52] It will turn out to be an alternate original series.
[01:00:55] But I imagine that James Kirk and Laan would be good for each other.
[01:00:59] Laan would feel safe with him, trust him,
[01:01:01] and they would marry and have kids in the end.
[01:01:04] And she deserves some happiness after all she has gone through.
[01:01:08] Excellent and tricky question.
[01:01:10] What will the others pick?
[01:01:12] Take care. Thanks for everything and live long and prosper.
[01:01:15] Thank you, Melanie and great.
[01:01:17] Yeah, Melanie and Zo both picking Laan for TOS there.
[01:01:20] It's a good pick.
[01:01:21] And I feel like I can still hear her smiling from meeting Melissa
[01:01:24] and Anson in Germany last year.
[01:01:25] Seriously. Yeah.
[01:01:27] I thought she set up a whole story for this too.
[01:01:29] It wasn't just like she's going to go here.
[01:01:30] You know, she's going to have a happy ending.
[01:01:32] All this is going to happen. It's going to be awesome.
[01:01:33] They're going to have 12 kids.
[01:01:34] It'll be wonderful.
[01:01:36] And I like if you've been watching Discovery recently,
[01:01:41] like which obviously you are because you're a Star Trek fan,
[01:01:44] and that's why you listen to open pike night.
[01:01:47] I'm suddenly thinking like, what if Laan were present in Discovery?
[01:01:51] Like, does that just increase the security competency of Discovery
[01:01:55] like 15 fold immediately?
[01:01:57] Because there have been some security lapses
[01:02:01] in Star Trek Discovery lately, folks.
[01:02:06] Huge lapses, huge.
[01:02:07] But, you know, you got to have you get plot armor.
[01:02:10] You also get plot demos when it comes to security.
[01:02:13] But I feel like Laan could take Maul in a fistfight
[01:02:17] and it would be the least number of syllables ever in a fistfight.
[01:02:20] Yes. All right.
[01:02:23] Well, Matt, I know who I've got, so I'm pretty sure I know who you've got.
[01:02:27] So why don't you go ahead and give us your second pick?
[01:02:31] All right. Well, there's really not many key characters left.
[01:02:34] We know that one of them is off living long and doing something else.
[01:02:37] So as far as who I have, I have Captain Pike.
[01:02:41] Oh, and for this one, I like I really wanted to figure out
[01:02:45] what do I do with this guy because it's Captain Friggin Pike.
[01:02:48] So I had to kind of figure out again, like,
[01:02:51] I don't want to just put him in some place where it's going
[01:02:52] to be an easy day on the job.
[01:02:53] I want to make him have something that's challenging.
[01:02:55] So I kind of set up a whole scenario in my head here
[01:02:59] where it's important for me that Pike still kind of knows who he is
[01:03:02] and what's going to happen to him for this to work. Right.
[01:03:04] So I'm going to bring us back to Stranger
[01:03:07] in the World episode, All Those Who Wander.
[01:03:09] And I'm going to say in my what if scenario
[01:03:12] that something happens and Pike just happens to slip somewhere,
[01:03:14] falls into some cracks and gets frozen into a block of ice on Vileo Beta 5.
[01:03:19] And he has woken up many years later and he ends up getting thought out.
[01:03:23] Yada yada yada.
[01:03:24] He becomes the captain of the Voyager.
[01:03:28] So I'm going to hike on the Voyager because I want him
[01:03:30] to get thrown across the galaxy with his crew.
[01:03:34] And what's going to make it really interesting to me is, number one,
[01:03:36] I mean, the fact that we have all these new scenarios with them,
[01:03:38] because, yes, he's going to be now having to deal with the Borg.
[01:03:41] He's going to deal with the caeson.
[01:03:42] He's going to deal with the crena.
[01:03:44] We're going to see how he does in these situations.
[01:03:45] We're going to see what happens to him
[01:03:47] when he gets stuck on a planet with an incurable sickness
[01:03:49] and he's stuck with your coat day all alone by himself.
[01:03:51] We'll see what happens there.
[01:03:53] But I have to I really want to explore this scenario because
[01:03:56] again, at this point, let's just say Pike got frozen to that point.
[01:03:59] Right. We know he knows what's going to happen to himself.
[01:04:02] So this kind of throws things out of flux in a lot of ways.
[01:04:04] Right. Because now his future is uncertain.
[01:04:06] Maybe he saw a different future for himself.
[01:04:09] He doesn't really know what can happen anymore.
[01:04:10] So his life is now brand new.
[01:04:12] He is vulnerable again.
[01:04:14] And maybe he's not that motivated to get home.
[01:04:16] Maybe he might not want to.
[01:04:17] Maybe he thinks that future could still be waiting for him
[01:04:19] because because he doesn't really necessarily know a date and a time.
[01:04:21] He just knows a means to an end.
[01:04:23] So perhaps he doesn't want to.
[01:04:25] Perhaps he thinks he's invincible now.
[01:04:27] And maybe that's also a problem because he might want to say,
[01:04:30] let's just go balls to the wall, full speed ahead.
[01:04:32] And he might not care about his crew.
[01:04:33] And he has to learn how to care about these people again.
[01:04:35] So it opens up a lot of possibilities for this character who kind of now,
[01:04:40] you know, again, he knew what was coming for him.
[01:04:42] Now he has some idea, but it's a whole different landscape now,
[01:04:46] a whole different world.
[01:04:47] And he's got a crew to worry about.
[01:04:48] So, yeah, I think that'll be really exciting to see Pike handle Voyager.
[01:04:52] That's good. I really like that.
[01:04:54] I immediately like a million questions, right?
[01:04:57] Like how does he butt heads with Chakotay?
[01:05:00] Like who is his holodeck significant other?
[01:05:03] Uh, do the salamanders still have space babies?
[01:05:08] Like there are so many questions.
[01:05:11] How good does he look in a white tuxedo?
[01:05:13] I mean, seriously, would be what Leola Root recipes will he make with Neelix?
[01:05:17] Oh, he would love Neelix.
[01:05:20] He'd be the first person ever to love Neelix.
[01:05:25] That's a great pick.
[01:05:27] That's good. That's inspired pick, Matt.
[01:05:30] And we have one more write in from our friend David Jones.
[01:05:32] He said, Hey, everyone at Open Pike.
[01:05:34] As you all know, I was a Federation black ops soldier
[01:05:36] and under the cloak of war in strange new worlds,
[01:05:38] but I never got to see a Klingon in front of me.
[01:05:41] So I would totally swap myself into DS9 Way of the Warrior episode.
[01:05:46] I want to fight a Klingon and make it worthy of song and story on screen.
[01:05:50] Good work, David. That's I mean,
[01:05:53] if you're going to be in a show like, yeah, fantasy cast yourself.
[01:05:56] Why wouldn't you do it?
[01:05:58] And I'm I'm not blowing smoke here, David.
[01:06:01] I feel you could absolutely make the ending of Way of the Warrior better.
[01:06:06] And that's all I'm going to say about that.
[01:06:09] I agree with that.
[01:06:11] All right. So I am the final pick for round two and I have Una
[01:06:16] and I went back and forth for a while and finally
[01:06:19] and decided to put her on Archer's enterprise and X01.
[01:06:24] I feel like she would be a very good,
[01:06:28] different kind of counterbalance to him than to pull is during the
[01:06:32] during this the run of the series.
[01:06:34] And with the fact that augments do come into play in enterprise,
[01:06:38] I feel like she would feel very duty bound to try and steer
[01:06:44] the Federation and Starfleet's course on their attitudes
[01:06:47] toward genetic modification like, hey, yes, not great,
[01:06:52] but maybe a hard line approach isn't the way we're supposed to go.
[01:06:56] And is isn't the best best for everybody.
[01:07:00] I also feel like she would be a good, you know,
[01:07:04] I think she could could mesh really well with the rest of the crowd.
[01:07:08] I think Mayweather and her would get along really well.
[01:07:11] Sato and her would get along really well.
[01:07:14] And I just think that if for some reason
[01:07:18] she was thrust back in time to Archer's enterprise, she would
[01:07:22] just be like, all right, give me a new uniform.
[01:07:24] Let's let's get out there and explore.
[01:07:26] Like, that's what I do. That's what I want to do.
[01:07:28] That's what I was born to do.
[01:07:30] That's why I was almost made to do. Let's go.
[01:07:34] And two things.
[01:07:36] First thing, while we're stealing bits from it's got Star Trek,
[01:07:40] John, you said duty.
[01:07:42] And second of all,
[01:07:45] Charles Tripp Tucker, the third's eyes would be bulging out of his head
[01:07:50] at the presence of Una like he she would create such
[01:07:53] a bunch of fun dynamics among this crew to Paul would love
[01:07:57] having another no nonsense officer there who knows how to just get the job done.
[01:08:02] Like, that's a really, really good pick, John.
[01:08:04] And that augment stuff, man, like you guys are.
[01:08:07] I feel like you guys are better at this than I am.
[01:08:09] I'm just like, well, it'd be fun.
[01:08:13] Well, thank you very much.
[01:08:14] And man, thank you to all of our callers.
[01:08:17] It's those were some great, great picks
[01:08:20] and just really fun to hear different ways people approach the assignment.
[01:08:25] But, man, I think everybody understood it.
[01:08:28] Love it. Yeah, I love hearing all the different angles people come at it with.
[01:08:31] Matthew, we've talked about your work on Trek, Long Island.
[01:08:35] But tell us about Trek Untold.
[01:08:37] Sure. For folks who don't know, Trek Untold is my podcast
[01:08:40] and it's an interview series.
[01:08:42] So every episode I chat with people who contribute to the Star Trek universe.
[01:08:46] And that could be anything from the actors,
[01:08:50] the writers, directors, VFX crew, behind the scenes crew, stunt crew,
[01:08:55] authors, people who work behind the scenes or who are working
[01:08:58] tertiary doing things like comics or making toys and historians as well.
[01:09:03] And we kind of dig into really, of course, Star Trek is a big part of it.
[01:09:07] But, you know, honestly, I tell the guests when I book them,
[01:09:09] I'm like, you know, really, we're going to spend maybe 25%
[01:09:11] of the show talking about Star Trek, and we're really going to spend
[01:09:14] a lot more of that time talking about their life experiences
[01:09:18] and their professional experiences that brought them into where they were
[01:09:20] within the world of Star Trek and how those personal experiences
[01:09:24] they got on the way and how those professional things they got
[01:09:25] before they did Star Trek affected what they did
[01:09:28] and affected who they are as a person here today in 2024 and beyond.
[01:09:31] So, you know, it's a Star Trek podcast, but it's really about
[01:09:36] trying to paint a complete picture of who each these guests are every week.
[01:09:40] So, you know, we explore all sorts of fun things.
[01:09:42] I had a lot of really fun guests on it.
[01:09:43] And that's that's birthed the show in a nutshell.
[01:09:46] And we're on YouTube, we're on all the audio platforms.
[01:09:49] We're not hard to find.
[01:09:51] Fantastic.
[01:09:52] We love a good interview podcast here at Open Pike Night.
[01:09:55] So that is I mean, you're going on the playlist, Matthew.
[01:09:59] That's all there is to it.
[01:10:00] Oh, thank you.
[01:10:02] And Stephanie, do you have any final plugs for Trek on Long Island,
[01:10:06] which for everybody listening to this on the day, it drops is 10 days away.
[01:10:12] Don't say that out loud ever again.
[01:10:16] Um, I want to say a million things,
[01:10:19] but Matt's going to say them because my throat is killing me.
[01:10:22] All right. Say that.
[01:10:23] Yeah, I will do that.
[01:10:25] Trek Long Island is going to be happening May 31st to June 2nd
[01:10:28] at the Hyatt Regency in Hoppock, Long Island, New York.
[01:10:32] If you can make it, you can pick up tickets, of course, in person
[01:10:34] at the event, but we prefer if you can buy your passes online.
[01:10:37] You can do that at TrekLongIsland.com
[01:10:40] and that's where you're going to find a full list of all the celebrities
[01:10:42] have got of all the panels you've got going on,
[01:10:44] all the different activities that you have.
[01:10:46] Photo ops are still available as well.
[01:10:48] And just again, real quick, if you don't mind,
[01:10:50] I just want to run down a few of the guests we have.
[01:10:51] Go for it.
[01:10:52] Mentioned a few of them already on the show.
[01:10:54] But yeah, we got Melissa Navia.
[01:10:55] We've got Armin Schimmerman.
[01:10:56] We've got Gabrielle Ruiz from Lower Decks.
[01:10:59] We got Chase Masterson, J.G.
[01:11:01] Herzler, Kitty Swink, Etidhi Badaki.
[01:11:04] We mentioned Nelix earlier. He's going to be there.
[01:11:06] We got Ethan Phillips.
[01:11:07] We got Tara Rosling.
[01:11:09] We got Janet Kidder.
[01:11:10] And what's really cool also for me, again, because I'm like that nerd
[01:11:13] and my podcast is all about finding those obscure folks.
[01:11:16] We have some folks this year
[01:11:18] who have not done conventions in years.
[01:11:20] Like there are some who haven't done Star Trek convention
[01:11:22] since like pre-pandemic, but there's a few who haven't done
[01:11:24] conventions since even before that point.
[01:11:26] And some of them haven't even done conventions on the East Coast
[01:11:29] in like two decades.
[01:11:30] So we've got like, you know, Katherine Lee Scott, who was in TNG.
[01:11:34] We've got Daphne Ashbrook, you know, as Melora from DS 9
[01:11:37] and also from Doctor Who fans.
[01:11:39] She was in Doctor Who, the movie with Paul McGann.
[01:11:42] We've got Clyde Kasatsu as well, who has not done much in the East Coast
[01:11:45] in years. So he's coming back.
[01:11:48] Natalia Nogulich, who we all know, love and sometimes hate
[01:11:51] as Admiral the chair, she is going to be there.
[01:11:54] And that's just like the tip of the iceberg with some of the celebrities.
[01:11:56] We've got tons of authors as well, because Trecklin Island,
[01:11:59] you know, Stephanie being a librarian, her focus is on reading.
[01:12:03] So we've got tons of authors coming here.
[01:12:04] We got Rob Perlman, Derek Tyler Attico, Keith R.A. DiCandido.
[01:12:09] We've got tons of science people, which this year,
[01:12:12] Adina Mignona from the Big Sci-Fi podcast, she's heading up this year.
[01:12:15] So lots of really amazing, very granular, really interesting
[01:12:18] science panels that's happening there.
[01:12:21] So, yeah, I mean, really tons of stuff.
[01:12:23] I'm going to lose my voice to if I keep talking about it.
[01:12:25] But yeah, tons of cool stuff.
[01:12:26] So please check out Trecklin Island if you're interested.
[01:12:29] And if you can't make it this year, still visit Trecklin Island dot com.
[01:12:33] Follow us on all the social media.
[01:12:35] So we're on Twitter, we're on Instagram or Facebook.
[01:12:37] I'm pretty sure Stephanie has Trecklin Island, like Blue Sky and Macedon.
[01:12:40] Everything else out there.
[01:12:42] And also, again, if you can't make it, please email
[01:12:44] Trecklin Island at Gmail dot com and get on the mailing list for 2025.
[01:12:50] All right.
[01:12:52] Well, this has been a fantastic gathering, Cameron.
[01:12:54] Great choice on the topic.
[01:12:56] I think it was an inspired pick, and it was really fun
[01:12:59] to learn more about Trecklin Island.
[01:13:02] And we got to go get prepped.
[01:13:04] We got to do some panel prep and get packed up.
[01:13:07] So be sure to clean up after yourselves.
[01:13:09] Be sure to tip your servers.
[01:13:11] You can go anywhere you want, but you can't stay here.
[01:13:14] And don't forget to visit the Open Pike Night and Green Shirt booth.
