[00:00:01] Welcome to an Open Pike Night bonus coverage moment of that clip that we got dropped at San Diego Comic Con of Strange New Worlds Season 3.

[00:00:12] It's not quite the more tegus clip that we were hoping for, but there are more Vulcans so we're gonna have a quick breakdown and reaction to that just to make sure that everybody knows that we are the Strange New Worlds podcast that comments on everything Strange New Worlds.

[00:00:30] No matter how we feel about it. This is our first Strange New Worlds content in almost a year so we gotta salivate over it a bit. I was waiting for so long.

[00:00:40] And you can tell that we weren't prepared for this because if we were we all would have worn Vulcan ears under our headphones and taken them off at one point. Damn, that one been a good one. And brushed our hair up real high. Big hair.

[00:00:51] How tall can we go here? So like initial reactions? Uh, it's... They are telling us that Season 3 is gonna take some big wild funny crazy scenes, swings and we can tell that the actors are having just as much fun as they always have been.

[00:01:12] So I think that's what they're getting across with this clip. I'm gonna go ahead and bet that this is episode 5 of Season 3. Yeah, you think? Yeah. It's just a guess. The Vulcan body swapping episodes continue.

[00:01:24] I also bet that it's Henry Alonzo Meyer's script because he's worked on the last two as well. I think he just really likes Vulcan comedy. I could see that. How about you, John? We know that this has been a controversial clip.

[00:01:38] I'm curious since it is just a slice, it's like I would be much more accepting of this if this is the cold open. If this is how the whole episode starts. I'm sure it is. And then we have to...

[00:01:54] There's probably some lead into it because we don't know what the mission is, but other than that I bet that's what happens. Well, I figure it would be a bounce back and forth and tell the lead up to it.

[00:02:03] This is the midpoint of the story and we get to follow it back and forth after. Because, yes, it's entertaining, but man are there a lot of questions there. There's a lot of questions. Everyone keeps asking about the genetic stuff and we'll touch on that.

[00:02:18] Getting a shot does not restyle your hair. We were dealing with that back in T and G days when Troy would suddenly be like D-H and her hair would be magnificent. It's like, what are we doing folks? We are past that.

[00:02:30] Okay, but it can change the shape of your ears, but not the shape of your hair. Yes! It can change the length and color of your hair, but not restyle it. There's style, there's gel, there's like... There's paint. Yeah, brains. You don't know how Vulcan follicles work.

[00:02:47] I am more accepting of the personality changes than the hairstyle, yes. For me it's clearly a big fun goofy thing, right? Much like charades or Spock-a-muck was. It feels really TOS in a lot of ways.

[00:03:04] There were a lot of things in TOS where if you look at it for more than 30 seconds you're like wait this doesn't make any actual sense. But that's not necessarily always the point, right? And we know from speaking to writers that it's like don't let canon or science

[00:03:20] stand in the way of the story that you want to tell, and I really feel that's definitely what's going on here. I wish we would have asked Kirsten about it because I bet she'd have some opinions on some of the Vulcan genetic play they've been having. Yeah, yeah.

[00:03:36] And I'm really lucky. I feel like we're really lucky that we're in a position where we're definitely going to get to ask whoever wrote this episode all of these questions about it because like you said there are a lot of questions and I think that's probably why

[00:03:49] this clip was picked to tease the third season is they want people to be talking about it and forming strong opinions and deciding, you know, that they need the explanation or not. So one thing that is also being brought up here is the music in the

[00:04:05] slow-mo hallway walking scene. How do you guys feel about that? Again, if it's the cold open, I'm fine with it. But if it's a middle of the episode, I'm going to be... It's a little bit of a weird choice, but I think it is this is how they're

[00:04:21] going to start telling us whatever the story is that is leading to. Oh, I guarantee you the end of this clip is the end of the cold open for this episode. Yeah. Yeah. And also I do...

[00:04:31] As a fan of the Guardians of the Galaxy, I love any slow-mo team walking down a corridor shot. Although like, yeah, Ants and Captain Fike swinging the Leerpa is like, would he do that? I don't care. I don't care if he would do that. That looks badass.

[00:04:45] It does look bad. That's kind of where I'm at. Yeah. I didn't like the inclusion of the Beastie Boys in Star Trek 09 and that's probably just because I don't like the Beastie Boys. Like, I don't have a problem with the music from another era

[00:05:02] being used to tell a story from a different time. I mean, A Night's Tale was full of Queen, right? And it's a medieval jousting movie. Like, it all depends on the rest of the execution of this episode

[00:05:15] and I feel like that's where I'm sitting with like the whole thing, right? Like if it's just this with no explanation, it's a little weird and potentially regressive, right? But like, we know that the case is that this is a part of a very long

[00:05:33] episode that's going to have all kinds of story and explanation around it. So I personally, I think I'm going to reserve judgment on how I feel about this idea until I have seen the whole episode. But I will say, I'm excited for more strange new worlds

[00:05:48] and I'm glad that they haven't backed off of taking big swings as you mentioned, Cameron. Yeah. Much like charades, I've watched this clip a couple times and much like charades. It's growing on me every time. I think obviously what they're doing with this is a Spock story

[00:06:01] and watching Spock be uncomfortable is super fun in this clip. I have been on the record of saying, and I will continue to say I do think they're spending too much time on Spock. Like we've had Spock. We've got other characters.

[00:06:12] But at the same time, if we get one Spock comedy a season, I'm OK with that. One Spock comedy every 10 episodes. I'm OK with that. And the last two Spock comedies have been very touching.

[00:06:25] So I was like, I'm sure by the end of this episode, everybody will be grabbing for the Kleenex. There's something very important being said here. I do want to say that it's the Krakowian serum. And I don't know if we talked about this before,

[00:06:37] but we don't know how the Krakowians work. Like they are an interdimensional species, right? Like maybe they did take some of the personality out of Chapel when they reassembled Spock and maybe somehow reverse engineering that did it.

[00:06:51] But if you watch the clip closely, because I've been seeing people say like, oh, they wouldn't bully Spock. Why are they bullying Spock? Do they forget who they are? I don't know if you watch this like who they are doesn't change. They're not bullying Spock.

[00:07:02] That's missing the point. They are so illogical and so accurate to the point they don't realize that what they are saying is hurting Spock's feelings. They're just trying to be accurate in their super genetic, genetic, genetic, logical way.

[00:07:15] So when you watch it, I think all the characters are them just filtered through a super logical Vulcan filter. I am not eloquent today. I apologize everyone. I think for a lot of folks it's that the logic isn't necessarily a genetic trait for Vulcans.

[00:07:31] But do we know that? Well, I mean, yeah, we know that culturally they decided at some point we need to adhere to logic, right? And the linea of evolution of the Vulcans who are more apt to do that would then create a species that is more

[00:07:48] genetically apt to cover their deep emotions with logic. I don't know why King the shot would make them feel super emotions for like five seconds and then get logical. Well, because we also know Vulcans have incredibly strong emotions, which is why they chose logic.

[00:08:03] But why would they go through the evolutionary steps from the shot is a bit of a stretch. So this is an interesting question Cameron and I don't know enough about how genetics works toward like attitudinal predisposition to like make a good guess there.

[00:08:18] But I think if I had to guess like some story reasons for some of this stuff, I think Spock mind melded with all of these people before they went through this hypospray in an attempt to like fortify them against the effects, right?

[00:08:31] Like here you need to know what it feels like to think like a Vulcan so I'm going to show you. And some of Spock's insecurities as well as the way that he gets treated by a lot of other Vulcans are going to come through in that, right?

[00:08:45] Because he does kind of get bullied by a lot of Vulcans and I'll just go ahead and say it. Vulcans can be pretty racist. Like if you look at all the times Vulcans show up in Star Trek with the exception of Spock himself

[00:08:59] who has had some comments that could be considered the same. Oh yeah. Vulcans are all about how they're better than everybody how other races are inferior to them. Like it's not pretty, but it is how Vulcans are. And I gotta assume that these writers and show runners

[00:09:17] are using this to hold up a mirror, right? Like hey like just because you don't think you're being a racist doesn't mean you're not. So like also I mean I could see that. Star Trek species have always just been like a symbol.

[00:09:31] Like they are not fully fleshed out races, species, right? Like we're getting more so with Trina and other characters but like there's still like all Vulcans are kind of supposed to represent one sliver of humanity. All Klingons one sliver, right?

[00:09:48] So like to say that by having them act I don't understand where the racism comments come from. Like they're acting like Vulcans like Star Trek has presented Vulcans for 50 years now. I mean they're acting like stereotypes of Vulcans. They're acting like.

[00:10:03] But Star Trek aliens have always been stereotypes and we're pulling away a little bit but we're not there yet folks. They're still just supposed to be allegories of human beings. I will say I think it's important to call out that

[00:10:17] Anson Mount and Sally Rose Gooding have the best pratfalls. Like they did like the Anson's pratfall. Then falling in like the order they were given the shot. That is great. I love that. I love them crawling on the ground. Like I said, I love Spock's reactions.

[00:10:32] Love that we get some Ortega's and Mitchell up on the bridge. Love seeing Mitchell get some dialogue in the teaser. In the teaser? That's awesome. Yeah, it is. I think the bridge part is the funniest part of this whole clip to me.

[00:10:46] Like I appreciate the Vulcan transformation but them just being like nope they're done like oh. Oh well that was boring. Hello, surely. Yeah, I mean I'm not everyone's got a fair right to whatever opinion they have on the clip. If you don't like it I get it.

[00:11:01] I do watch it and be like is that how that would work? I mean that does get in the way of the comedy for me somewhat.

[00:11:07] But at the end of the day I'm enough on the fence where I'm like okay I'll give the whole episode a chance before passing judgement. Another comment that I've seen a couple of times is wow, way to spoil the cliffhanger from season two

[00:11:19] and I'm like did you think they were going to start killing characters off left and right? Maybe Pellia but they've told us enough that Pellia is in more than just the press. Well, but Ortega's too. That's true, yeah.

[00:11:34] Ortega's, Laon, I mean arguably Una but like Una's on the ship. Where's Patel? Patel should be in this clip. Where is Patel? Right, Patel was not in this clip. Put my word down she'll be safe.

[00:11:50] Anyway, I love how Comic-Con is out there pissing off Star Trek and Marvel fans with the reveals at Comic-Con. Oh man. I do think maybe there would have been a better clip.

[00:12:00] Maybe there was a better way to reveal RDJ as Dr. Doom but I don't know they're just getting cocky out there. Yeah, I don't know how to feel about that at all mostly because I'm not invested enough in it to have like a strong reaction.

[00:12:14] Let's just wait and see guys. Let's just wait and see. Yeah, that and like is anybody surprised that a comic book movie would do something gimmicky? Like we're not here to talk about Marvel folks I promise. No, no. Alright.

[00:12:28] Alright, so enjoy again the first New Strange Rebels content in a year and... It's all you guys will be watching for the next eight months so enjoy it. Just the haircut alone. The haircuts even before the transformation you guys. They're like out.

[00:12:44] Everybody has gorgeous hair. It's new. It's fun. There's a lot more hair in this season. Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it and it's only going to be what? Like another year until we see the whole season. It's great.

[00:12:58] Anyway, it's been a long year and it's going to be another long year so be sure to clean up after yourselves. Be sure to tip your servers. You can go anywhere you want but you can't stay here.
