[00:00:09] Is this thing on? Hello? Hello? Welcome to Open Pike Night, the Strange New Worlds Trivia Game Show, where the hosts of your favorite Strange New Worlds podcast, you guessed it, play trivia games. I of course am your host this evening, Jesse Bailey. I will be the quiz master, I will be handing out points. I had so much fun doing it when we were doing our little game during Starfleet Academy that we thought, hey, what if we just
[00:00:52] made a whole quiz episode? So here we are. Now, of course, we can't play quiz games without contestants. So, joining us tonight, a college student and podcast producer from Clover, South Carolina, John T. Boulds. What is Cam weeping uncontrollably? Oh, sorry, I thought you said the end of tonight's game show.
[00:01:16] I'm sure we will find out. And as you may have guessed, an aspiring beard grower and host of multiple podcasts from Portland, Oregon, Cameron Harrison. I'm here for the Quiznos. I was told there would be Quiznos. You may have misunderstood.
[00:01:36] But we do have three different quiz formats for you tonight, gentlemen. I figured we could just build a Jeopardy board, or I could just do some countdown stuff, or I could just make it a fill in the blank. But why do that when we can do all three? Hell yeah. I'm in. I'm game. Let's do it. So, hey.
[00:02:25] Now, what is the difficulty on a scale of Celebrity Jeopardy to Regular Jeopardy to College Jeopardy? Assuming College Jeopardy is the hardest of those? It seems to be, yeah. Yeah. This is Tournament of Champions level difficulty. No, it ranges from somebody who saw an episode of Star Trek to somebody who hosts a Star Trek podcast. So Celebrity Jeopardy.
[00:02:49] I will say this is very Strange New Worlds centered, but some of these things you will know if you have more than just Strange New Worlds Star Trek knowledge. Understood. Good. So without further ado, let's get going, gentlemen. I don't want no more ado. I know how you hate ado. I hate ado. It's the one thing everybody knows about Cameron. Folks, you can play right along at home by yelling answers into your podcast player.
[00:03:19] This is technically not Jeopardy. Hear that, lawyers? Get off our ass. I made it very simple for you. And our categories tonight, gentlemen, are Pile of Ships, Trechnobabble, and Galactic Geography. All right. I'm pulling out my little Wes. He's my good luck charm.
[00:03:48] Oh, this is legit. All right. This has functioning buttons and everything. I was already doing this for myself, and then we came up with this idea, and I was like, hey, this is perfect. I like that Jesse was just doing this for himself on his off time. He didn't tell us about that. All right. So to determine who goes first, we will flip the Star Trek STLV 57 coin.
[00:04:15] John, you will be heads, which is three indistinct sci-fi character faces. Cameron, you will be the side that says Las Vegas. Oh. Same, same. Wouldn't that be great? Cameron, you are choosing first. I got the butts. Okay. Oh, God. I have no idea what I'm going to be best at. Galactic Geography for a thousand, please, Jesse. Wow. For a thousand? Mm-hmm. Wow.
[00:04:45] You start big, because then if you get the double Jeopardy, you've got something to play with. Right. Yeah. Spoiler alert, there is no Daily Double or Final Jeopardy. Yeah, yeah. But, gentlemen, I will remind you one more time, don't forget to buzz in. On our very sophisticated buzz in technology. All right. Galactic Geography for a thousand. And we have to wait for you to finish reading before we buzz in? That, I believe, is the rule. Okay. Yeah.
[00:05:12] The planet Vulcan orbits this star. This is a thousand dollar question for sure. And we lose points if we get it wrong? Yeah. You go negative. You go wrong. Are we going full Jeopardy that way? Oh. Yeah. I don't know if I ever knew this. Fuck it. Cameron. Vulcan. I'm very sorry.
[00:05:43] We were looking for 40 Eridani A. Eridani? Yeah. Like in the Bobaverse. And Hail Mary, right? And Hail Mary. Yep. Oh. The Vulcans are neighboring. Oh, I think he mentions that in Hail Mary. Shit. I just read that. I should have known that. God dang it. Now, I don't remember if that means it's John's turn or if it's Cameron's turn again, I think. I think it's my turn. It's my turn again if John doesn't answer. Right. Oh. Going by Jeopardy rules, technically. That's right.
[00:06:13] Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think Cameron would select again. Okay. Galactic Geography 200. All right. This is the Klingon home world. Cameron. What? Kronos? Oh. Sorry, John. Are you serious? No, I didn't clear the buzzers. Yeah. Oh, okay. So it shows Cameron first. My bad. Producer John. What? I clicked like the second it flashed on screen.
[00:06:40] That's why I was shocked because I saw you click like five seconds after I did it. I was waiting until I finished reading it like we're supposed to. What is Kronos? Kronos is correct. That's 200 points for John. And Cameron is technically correct. I will remind you, you do need to wait until the question has finished being read. Fine. To buzz in. All right. Clear it. John, please choose again. I will take Trechnobabble for 600.
[00:07:08] These particles are often detected in areas where time travel has occurred or will occur. Producer John. What are Kronoton particles? Correct. I'll take Trechnobabble for 800. EPS means this, often mentioned in relation to conduits or manifolds.
[00:07:35] The answer, of course, is what is electroplasma system? Boy, I don't think. I was going to say you should give us more time, but I would not have come up with that. Yeah. All right. All right. Producer John. I will take Trechnobabble for 400. Answer. Toodaloo. When these are up, use of the transporter is nearly impossible. Cameron. Shield. What are shields? Correct.
[00:08:04] Thank you for remembering to phrase your question. That was close. Or what are, oh, what do they call them in arena? Screens. Screens. What are screens? Yeah. So Cameron got 400. So only 600 in the hole. All right, Cameron. It's your choice again. Technobabble. Trechnobabble for 200, please, Jesse. This mineral is a critical component of warp drive. Producer John.
[00:08:33] What is trilithium? Oh, I'm sorry. Cameron. Yes. What is dilithium? There it is. Damn it. I think a tritanium. Yes, I was. Which is probably what they built the container out of. All right. Trechnobabble for 1,000, I think. 1,000. We'll hear the babble. This isotope of hydrogen is dangerous when burned and can be obtained with Boussard collectors.
[00:09:08] Burn the... I'm assuming this is from Lost in Translation. And what did they... Crap. Only I knew what an isotope was. I know the word. I could not give you a definition. I'm not... I'm already in the hole. All right. We were looking for deuterium.
[00:09:38] Yep. Wasn't going to guess deuterium. Deuterium. Oh. All right. Cameron, choose again. Hammer would have known. Yes, he would have. Galactic geography for 400, please. Dr. Mbenga became the butcher of this moon during the Federation-Klingon War. Oh, bastard. Cameron. What is Jigal? That is correct. Yee. Well, let's switch it up. Let's do pile of ships for 200. Cameron, the USS Enterprise is this class of ship.
[00:10:09] Producer John. What is Constellation? Oh, I'm sorry. Cameron, care to buzz in? Constitution. What is Constitution? Correct. Okay. $200 for Cameron. But then what's the galaxy class? That's the Enterprise D. Oh, so USS Enterprise. I see. No bloody A, B, C, or D. Okay. I mean, that was my strange new world. I know. Trust me. Galaxy. I almost said galaxy.
[00:10:39] Well, when you said your Constellation, it locked the other one in my head. So thank you. Let's do pile of ships for 400, please. In the alternate history of Equality of Mercy, Captain Kirk commanded this ship. Cam. What is the Farragut? That is correct. I started to doubt myself and John didn't buzz in right after me. I was like, was that a different one? I thought it was the same one. I'm liking ships. Let's keep it going with a pile of ships for 600.
[00:11:08] This ship's captain is Marie Battelle. Oh. The little USS letter, Kenny. Producer John? What is the USS Cayuga? That is correct. Yes, of course. Producer John, the board is yours. I will take pile of ships for 1,000. Ooh, this is a fun one. Mitchell mentions this ship class during the false flag attack in the Broken Circle, the
[00:11:36] same class as the USS Discovery. I don't know. I got nothing. Yeah. I feel it's in there somewhere. We are looking for the Crossfield class. Yep. Crossfield class. I will take pile of ships for 800. Wow. Crossfield. Damn.
[00:12:01] This Falcon has nothing to do with the Millennium, but instead was the last ship that Lieutenant Hemmer ever boarded. Uh. Well. Producer John. What is the USS Peregrine? Great. That's right. That's right. Okay. Very well done. Very well done. Thank you. I'm talking to you for 600, please. All right. And the answer.
[00:12:29] Captain Pike inadvertently abandoned a yeoman named Zack on this planet. Uh. Planet Lotus Eater. Uh. Oh. What was the name of that planet? Oh my God. I knew I should have started my rewatch already. Literally the first planet ever visited in Star Trek. I know. I'm so sorry, everyone. I know it has a number. They're going to run us out of these host chairs. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:12:59] Yeah. Yeah. Cameron. What is Rigel 4? Oh. God. I'm sorry. We were looking for Rigel 7. 7. Oh. Yep. Freaking merch with that on it. God dang it. Um. I will take Galactic Geography 800, please. The extra-dimensional Vesda are imprisoned in a labyrinthine structure on this planet.
[00:13:26] I don't pay attention to planet names. Look, I've been putting furniture together all day, okay? We were looking, of course, for Vadia 9. God. Vadia 9. Vadia 9. Vadia 9. Vadia 9. And then what's the planet from the finale? That was Sky Gowan. Sky Gowan. Yeah. Okay. Yep.
[00:13:56] So, at the end of the Jeopardy round. Look, I'm going to do a lot better on fill in the blank, people. I swear. Cameron has 600 points. Woo! Positive. And producer John has 1,400 points. Okay. All right. We'll be back right after this with our next quiz game. Tell me you have a fake ad for a fake product. You're a hard-working Starfleet captain. You've got conferences to attend, anomalies to scan, directives to implement, and maneuvers to lend your name to.
[00:14:26] You don't have time for the problems caused by those budget inertial dampeners, like dead officers, shattered view screens, and internal bleeding just because you slowed to impulse. If you're sick of explaining to your superiors why you need another new crew and your umpteenth artificial heart replacement, then come on down to Damper Dan's Damn Good Dampeners. These dampeners are so damn good, you'll question whether you've decelerated at all.
[00:14:53] They'll even work when going to warp, so you'll be able to treat your crew to peace and long life, no matter how much inertia you need to dampen in any direction. So the next time you're getting retrofitted, ask for Damper Dan's Damn Good Dampeners, the best damn dampeners Latinum can buy. That's Damper Dan's Damn Good Dampeners, just across from Patrick's Pips and Positronics on North Highway 204, Exit 4, Galorndon Core.
[00:15:20] And if the Admiral tells you Starfleet can't afford it, tender your resignation and say, Damn it, man, I'm a Damper Dan man. And we're back. As a quick reminder, Cameron has 600 points. Producer John has 1,400 points. Each question in this next game will be worth 100 points. And of course, this next game is one of, I think, America's favorite trivia games.
[00:15:50] And it is, of course, called You're Gonna Need a Bigger Quote. Ah! I love it. Because, of course, these quotes don't have all the words in them. You will fill in the blanks to complete these quotes. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. All right. Here we go. Right up until the very end, life is to be worn blank. Ah.
[00:16:21] Producer John. Like a comfortable jacket? Oh, I'm sorry. Cameron, do you have a guess? Like an apron? Both good guesses. The answer, of course, is gloriously. Of course. What episode is that from? That is from the first episode of the first season, Strange New Worlds. That was 18 years ago, Jesse. Well, spoiler alert, there's three quotes per season. Okay.
[00:16:52] All right. Let's go to the next quote. I could have told you if it was Spock asking where his pants are. I know that quote from the first episode. I tried to stay away from quotes that I knew you would know, like, in an instant. Okay. All right. Here we go. The yeoman don't know what they're talking about. If they did, they wouldn't be... Cameron. Yeoman? Correct. 100 points to Cameron. All right. Let's see what we've got next.
[00:17:21] Your first pony was named... I'm sorry, Mel. I know you know the answer to this. Oh, God. Any scene involving Pike talking to Pike. I'm sure you've got memorized. I, however... Four words? Mr. Magic Missileman? You're not that far off. Cameron.
[00:17:48] Mr. Jolly Rancher Horse. That's an admirable guess, but no, I'm sorry. Producer John, do you have a guess? I have no guess. The answer we were looking for is Sir Nays-A-Lot. Okay. All right. It's a good thing we're about to do season reviews. Yeah, this is... Old season reviews, because this is a little humbling. I'm realizing how much more I'm going to get by re-watching everything.
[00:18:16] If you don't run a podcast, you do not know how much just it comes into our brains and then right out as soon as we're done recording and editing. Like, we cannot keep all this in our heads. It's a version of performance blackout. Yes. Yeah. All right. Up next. Don't skip blank when you can get them. Okay. Three words. Don't skip. Cameron. Free hot dogs.
[00:18:47] Oh, very close. I'm sorry. That's not correct. Producer John, do you have a guess? Naked hot dogs. Naked hot dogs. I love yous. What did you say, John? I love yous. Oh, I'm sorry. The answer we were looking for was good hot dogs. Give me 50 points. Oh, I'll turn it to my Kirk, damn it. Good hot dogs. Give me 66 points. I got two thirds of that answer right. You know what? I'm going to give you 50 points. Free and good. I mean, free is good.
[00:19:17] Good is free. Hard to argue against that. And yes, John is correct. In fact, the quote attribution may be a hint. Yeah. All right. Up next, we've got... I'll run it up the flagpole and see if it... Cameron. Barks? Oh, very close. Producer John. Flaps? Oh, even closer. The answer we were looking for is quacks. Quacks. What?
[00:19:47] Are you serious? Yes, this was the Clint Howard character, Buck Martinez, who had all of his idioms incorrect, but very close to... I remember it being something quirky. Yeah. Okay. When I was looking up quotes, I was like, he says that? Oh, yeah. He totally does say that. Now I remember. All right. I would prefer not to be a blank either. Producer John. Corpse?
[00:20:17] Oh, I'm sorry. No, I know the episode and the scene. Oh, damn it. No. Wow. What did they talk about being? They could have been... Shit. Okay. It's one word. Okay. Your space format is still... Okay. It's... Bunny? Correct. Yes. Wow. I thought that was the easy one, honestly. Yeah.
[00:20:47] Well, that was the easy one. From the crossover episode? The musical. That's from the musical, yeah. Oh, that's right. And I think it's a reference to the Buffy musical episode? Oh, right. All right. Here we go, gentlemen. Humbling. Social commentary with rubber masks and buried metaphors. You know. Okay. We're getting a little more fresh in the mind. Producer John. Sci-fi? Science fiction? Science fiction? I'm going to give you science fiction. Yeah.
[00:21:17] Okay. You did adjust it, but yes, science fiction is correct. All right. Next up we have... Honestly, I had the same problem with blank in the 1960s and the 1990s and last July. Producer John. Come on, get it. Acid. Ooh. Oh, dang it. LSD. There we go. Dang it. I knew it was one or the other.
[00:21:48] It's like it has to be one of these two. Yeah. I thought you were going to say mushrooms for a second. I knew it was acid. I was like, is it acid or is it LSD? I can't remember what she said. All right, gentlemen. Here we go. On Vulcan, we have a similar expression. The blank. Producer John. Oh, shit. The salat that ate its tail. Very well done, sir. Thank you. Okay, I probably would have got it wrong. Thank you guys so much for playing.
[00:22:18] Thank you, Jesse. You're going to need a bigger quote. This is so freaking fun. Now, at the end of that round, the scores have narrowed in their margin a little bit. Cameron has 950 points. Producer John has 2,400 points. Is that a more narrow margin? Yeah. I mean, it's either narrow or exactly the same as it was. Okay. So, that means that this will all come down to our final game of the evening. Each one of these answers will be worth 200 points.
[00:22:46] So, Cameron, there is still hope. Hope. And in this case, you will be able to make some choices again. But I will remind you, please still buzz in as soon as you believe that you have the answer. Now, I know. Like that? Yes. Just testing. Just testing. I don't believe either of you have watched or played the British television game show called Countdown before.
[00:23:15] But this game is modeled on Countdown. Of course, I had to give it a different name because Countdown doesn't make sense without the numbers aspect of the game. So, instead, we're going to call this Grumpy Jumbles. I like it. All right. I will show you a jumbled word. You will buzz in when you know what that word is supposed to be. There are no hints. This is a pure brain power style game. Okay.
[00:23:42] John, since you answered correctly last, I will let you choose the first jumble. Okay. Nine. All right. Your first nine-letter jumble. And listeners, if you'd like to play along at home, I will read the letters in the order that they appeared on the screen for John and Cameron so that you have a chance to unjumble the jumbles yourself.
[00:24:08] C-I-L-Y-H-E-N-R-I. Silly Henry. Are these all one word or could it be multiple words? That is a great question. This is the only one that's technically two words. Okay. Oh, okay. And I have a hint for this one.
[00:24:36] This is a name. Uh-huh. Second hint. This person loves classic Earth musicals. Shin Riley. Very well done, Cameron. Oh, good work. I was like, Henry? Nope. Richie? Is there a Richie in Strange New World? That's the fun part. I can mess with your ability to figure it out just by putting a real word in there.
[00:25:07] All right, Cameron. What would you like next? Let's go to seven letters. Let's ease into this. All right. Seven letter jumble on its way. I don't know how Jesse's going to edit this, people, but I guarantee you we were thinking a lot longer. Yeah. D-R-L-A-M-I-A. Producer John. Admiral. Very well done. Wow, good.
[00:25:37] All right, Producer John. We'll go with seven letters again. Seven letters. It is L-A-M-O-Y-N-A. Producer John. Anomaly. Very nice. Wow. Seven letters is John's wheelhouse. Apparently so, yeah. That's me at my eighth grade reading level. All right. Seven letters.
[00:26:05] B-A-S-I-C-K-Y. Oh, Cameron. Sickbay. Very nice. All right, Cameron. How many letters? Nine letters. Ooh, okay. F-R-E-D-T-C-O-L-E. That's so much more.
[00:26:36] How is it so much more? Only two more letters. First hint. This is not John T. Bold's alter ego. Second hint. This is a piece of technology. Producer John. Deflector. Very nice. Deflector. There it is. Yep. Let's clear out the last of the seven letters. All right. Here we go.
[00:27:06] L-U-S-T-E-H-T. Producer John. Shuttle. That was quick. Wow. All right. The beginning of the eight letter grumpy jumbles. E-L-M-O-W-H-O-R. Did you put these in this order on purpose? Producer John. What is wormhole? Correct.
[00:27:36] And yes, Cameron. That was not a question. I did. For those listening, it just says Elmo whore. Elmo whore. I can't scramble an Elmo whore staring me in the face. That's what makes it fun. All right. Producer John. Choose again. And another eight letter. All right. Here we go. S-A-C-P-U-B-E-S.
[00:28:05] Have they all been something funny? Cameron. Shit. I capsules. I did. Nope. I thought it was capsules. Producer John, do you have a guess? Subspace. Very nice. And I wish they could all be a funny thing, Cameron, but some of them don't have that option. All right. I think we've got two eight letters left.
[00:28:34] That one said sack tubes, by the way. I'll do another eight letter. It was sack tubes in my face that time. D-A-T-E-R-I-O-S. Producer John. Asteroid. Very nice. How are you doing this? The clue for that one was, after you watch season one of Picard, you may want to date Rios. Okay. Date Rios. Nice. Okay. For sure.
[00:29:03] Let's do the last eight letter word. All right. Here we go. N-A-N-R-A-D-I-O. Cameron. Wait. Android? No. Oh. Sorry. Nope. Producer John, do you have a guess? I don't. The answer for this one is Andorian. Oh, shit. Very close, Cameron. Yeah. Very close.
[00:29:31] We have two nine letter grumpy jumbles left and that will be all she wrote, gentlemen. So here we go. D-O-P-E-S-T-O-R-E. Dope store. Cameron. Torpedoes. Very nice. Nice. Good work.
[00:30:01] All right. Last one's worth a thousand. Let me look at the scores. Would that even help? It wouldn't, but I could make it exactly as many as you need to tie. It's fine. It's fine. All right. This last one will be worth 500 points. M-U-T-E-D-N-A-I-L.
[00:30:32] Delta mind? Nope. The only hint I have for this one is that this was a one word tease on the Open Pike Night podcast. Producer John. Al dintium. Al dintium. Very nicely done. I was putting A in the E-M. God dang it. I know. Good job. Wow.
[00:30:59] Guys, I can't believe the gap in this score. Producer John with 4,000 points. Run away. And Cameron with 1,550 points. But I will say- If I hadn't gotten that negative 1,000 right off the bat, it would be a little less embarrassing. A little. And that was the only round you could even go negative. Go big or go home. And I went home. I did both.
[00:31:26] Well, guys, thank you so much for playing Open Pike Trivia Night. Thank you. We had a lot of fun putting this together. What do you guys think? Like, should we have guests play this? Should we play this with patrons? I think this, yeah. I think this is something we should continue to develop further because this was really fun and I think guests would enjoy it. I'm sure patrons would enjoy it. Kick our butts. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I would love to hear what patrons have to say, like yelling at us.
[00:31:56] Like, come on. Let's do this again after we do our preseason watch. Yes. I think that's a good idea. Thank you very much, Jesse. This is great. Oh, you're quite welcome. It was my pleasure. And as Cameron mentioned, we are going to rewatch every season of Strange New Worlds with you, the listeners and callers, leading up to season four of Strange New Worlds. The calls to action will go out and they will be, of course, what are your favorite moments, episodes, things from season one? One week. The next week will be season two.
[00:32:26] The following week will be season three. And then with any luck, we'll be right into season four of Strange New Worlds. I cannot wait to figure out what was going on in that teaser. I need to know if that really is Mars. I want to see dinosaurs. I want to see Pike riding a dinosaur. And I'm excited to have more material for Open Pike Trivia Night. Absolutely. This was super fun, man. Thank you again. What was the scientific name of the dinosaur we saw Pike riding?
[00:32:56] And Cameron, that's what's going on at Open Pike Night. What's going on over at Green Shirt? Oh, we've got a lot of minutes happening with both the DS9 minute and the seven of nine minutes of Voyager. You can check those out. We'll get back to season two Picard after season four of Strange New Worlds. I like it. Well, it's been a fun night and producer John has cash and prizes to collect. A new car. It's a hotel.
[00:33:26] Tell him what he's won, Johnny. Well, let's see. He has won the chance to go to bed early enough to wake up super early for work tomorrow and is going to be having to patiently wait for screeners just like all the rest of us on Open Pike Night. So really a hollow victory on my part. But the rest of you are winners for having this and thank you for joining us. Be sure to clean up after yourselves. Be sure to tip your servers.
[00:33:51] You can go anywhere you want, but where is where you cannot stay? That was a terrible way to ask a question. You can't stay here.
